but i think its pretty good

looseleaflettuce  asked:

what bands are True Emo? bc when i think of emo i think of lo-fi but i'm pretty sure that's bc i'm 18 so i wasnt around for the Real Emo Tunes :(

i’mma answer this publicly because i needed the excuse to be entirely self indulgent, k?

wait. hold on.

*puts on grad school hat*

so my answer/view on what counts as “emo” is really heavily influenced by this book, Nothing Feels Good, its been years now since i’ve read it, but it includes (may be wholly?) a history of the development of emo as a genre, as well as profiles on some really well known bands. what’s super cool about it is that it was very of the moment. it was published in 2003, which is when emo was gaining mainstream notoriety amongst rock circles, but was nowhere near the cultural zeitgeist it became.

so if you ask me, i’d argue, as andy greenwald identifies in Nothing Feels Good that “true emo” bands would include the likes of Rites of Spring, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jets to Brazil, Mineral, American Football etc*. There’s a really interesting idea that Dan kept kind of bumping up against but didn’t really articulate–that late 00′s emo and the indie music that was fucking exploding around that same time (so, your Death Cab for Cuties, Minus the Bear, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc) actually have a common ancestor in the early 00s emo that was coming out of places like DC and further Northeast (as far North East as…New Jersey, eh? eh?). But Dan says some bullshit about the indie guys not liking the emo guys, not exactly? Like sometimes indie guy and the emo guy were the same dude.

And that dude was a dude who was into the hardcore scene/punk, but who wanted to sing about his feelings and heartbreak, and mental health issues, things that were seen as more feminine and less aligned with the more masculine, more politically charged punk/hardcore scene.

And so you have bunch of dudes doing this, with differing levels of alignment with the hardcore scene. On one end of the spectrum you’ve got your Thrices, your Alkaline Trios and on the other end you’ve got your Sunny Day Real Estates, or even further, your Dashboard Confessionals where he’s not even using an electric guitar.

This, btw, is part of why you’ve got both Death Cab for Cutie and AFI on the same list of bands that are “emo” on wikipedia. The whole emo genre was actually super fucking prolific and because the genre qualifications were so vauge (its “emotional” “rock” music. that’s a lot of musical space to play in) a lot of different sounds were able out of early 00s emo.

Mix emo with hardcore? You get Thrice.

Mix emo with goth? AFI and Hawthorne Heights

Mix is with metal? You get Coheed and Cambria, I guess??

Mix it with rap? Dear god you get Brokencyde, undo undo.

And if you mix it with pop? Well shit, you just built a Fall Out Boy.

So, Dann, you say, I didn’t need any of this.

I mean that’s fair, but I’m sure you’re also wondering where the fuck My Chem, P!atD and FOB come in.

ok so my pretty little pal @teamfreewill-imagine tagged me to post 6 selfies but i rarely take selfies, let alone good ones, so this was hard to compile. tumblr has seen most of these already so that shows how little i take photos of my own face… and also all of them were taken on snapchat so i don’t even really look like this but idk it took me years to think of appropriate photos!!

anyway, i’m gonna tag people but feel free to not do it because i understand selfie posts are difficile and not everyone is into sharing their face with the world so no pressure, lads :0)

srtt crit sorry

christ srtt really does feel like an attempt at a reboot rather than a continuation to sr2, if even that. characters unceremoniously getting killed off/changed completely and killed off/getting replaced by new ones who don’t give a shit about the Saints, Boss acting as if they’ve never done things like insurance fraud before and not fucking knowing how to dual wield, incorporating the activites into the story as if no one would notice even tho everyone absolutely did and rightly called it out as an attempt at padding the story out….

i still think that it’s a pretty good game… on its own. i know going “its good but not really *series name here*” is repeated a lot in these kind of new vs old criticisms but i really don’t know how else to describe my issue with it. honestly since V is so keen on attempting to expand the series into this “multiverse” thing this game would’ve functioned so much better as a spinoff with a new cast rather than a part of the main series, to expand the world of the Saints beyond just Stilwater. they should’ve just went with the SRU plot for the main series and have these gangsters turned celebrities do their own gosh darn thing in their own, more light hearted way without the baggage of 2 previous games and their unresolved plot threads

idk man the thing that sucks about not being really pretty is that no matter what you tell yourself and what your friends might say, you sort of always know that you’re just not. and i’m not talking about being stubborn and fishing for compliments, it’s just knowing that you’re not conventionally attractive, that people on the street won’t double-take when you pass by them, that people won’t be flustered trying to talk to you. and i know looks aren’t everything but damn it sure feels like it when you aren’t absolutely gorgeous

“Bad guys don’t deserve to be redeemed” is a boring plot mindset and it’s cancelled forever.

Show me bad guys that think it’s too late to turn their life around, and then turn it around. Show me bad guys that think they’ll never be loved because of the things they’ve done and then give them love and support that makes them feel like it’s worth it to change. Show me bad guys who are bitter, hold grudges, lash out at people, and then make them realize that this Isn’t Working and want more out of their life. Show me bad guys that ask the good guys for help!!

The “villain gets what’s coming to him and is never seen or heard from again” trope is old and played. I want to hear from them again. I want them to ask the good guys to drive them to their first therapy appointment. I want them to struggle through apologies, not because they’re too proud to say “I’m sorry” bc tbh that trope can die too, but because they can’t find the words to make things better and it makes it feel pointless to try.

Make it hard! Make it hurt! Make them question who they are and if change is possible and make them find out that they can be more than the destructive thoughts and behavior they’ve adapted! Make them learn that having bad thoughts doesn’t make you a bad person, and you can choose which thoughts and desires you entertain and act upon. Let the choice to ignore bad thoughts and focus on positive ones become easier over time. And let them feel proud of themselves for it!

Real people struggle with these issues every day and right now the social message is that if you fuck up, you’re scum and you deserve to suffer and you’ll never be more than scum. Real people need to know that you can’t undo the damage of things you’ve done, but you can be better in the future. Real people need to know that you’re not pigeonholed into being a Bad Guy for the rest of your life because you’re a Bad Guy right now.

Nobody “deserves” to be redeemed, it isn’t about “deserving” redemption, it’s about working your ass off not to keep hurting people because you can.

“Trust fall”

Here it is! My small but oh so time consuming Iwaoi comic! As you may notice, I have experimented a bit with lineless art, colors and such. The theme isn’t exactly new for these two, but I felt that I have to start at the basics to get to know them! (I feel like I still have a bit left to a good characterization, but I’ll be getting there.) I hope you like it!

The Baudelaire’s refusal to be grateful for their unfortunate events seemed like such a good message for kids - so I made a thing.

NTs in High School

INTJ: The kid who is at the top of the class even though they don’t seem to work nearly as hard as the other people up there. They are an extreme nerd, but you wouldn’t guess it by just looking at them. Are (or at least seem) extremely confident and put-together, which, along with their unequivocal dislike of most people, makes other people who don’t know them well nervous around them.

INTP: The kid who has straight A’s even though they haven’t picked up the text book since they brought it home. Obviously a nerd and/or geek. They hardly talk to anyone, except to the teacher in order to pose theoretical questions that don’t have a solid answer. Their backpack is more like an endless collection of miscellaneous junk.

ENTJ: The kid who is the president of 4 different clubs and captain of a sport, whether or not they actually tried to obtain these positions. May or may not be at the top of the class, but everyone is convinced that they are. They slightly scare everyone else.

ENTP: The kid who never pays attention or does any work, yet is always on the honor roll. They know and talk to literally everyone and teachers love them. They are the supreme random trivia champions. They would crush everyone on the debate club if they joined, but that would mean researching a specific topic for too long which is too much effort and not enough pay off.

Red & Blue Connection Theory

Be warned there’s gonna be Voltron s3 spoilers in here!! So if you don’t want to see that, look elsewhere. (Also this is super fucking long, I’m sorry.)

Anyway so I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and what with (at least temporary) Red Paladin!Lance being confirmed, now is probably the time to post this.

Coincidentally, I’ve been spending the past couple weeks looking for foreshadow of the Red and Blue Lions have some kind of Special Connection and there is quite a bit, so I thought I’d share some of what I’ve found.

The gist of it is that I think Red and Blue have some kind of connection that the other lions don’t seem to have with each other. Of course all the lions have a special bond, but there seem to be a lot of hints that the connection between Red and Blue *coughs* and their pilots is something a little different––basically, that Lance and Keith have shown a lot more interest in/connection to each other’s lions than any of the other paladins have.

(And before everyone jumps down my throat, I’m NOT proposing a permanent lion switch so jot that down lol. But I do think temporary lion switches are Good so uhhhh fight me.)

I’m not sure how to go about explaining this, but I’m just gonna break it down to:

- Keith’s connection with Blue

- Lance’s connection with Red

- What Does It Mean

Here we go!!!

Keith & Blue

- I’m still caught up on this whole “Keith sensed the Blue Lion” thing. Granted, it could have something to do with his alien abilities™ (I’m still rooting for Keith with Altean ancestry, y’all) but I still question the choice of having Keith sense Blue, of all the lions. He only detects the location of two lions in canon, and they’re––you guessed it––Blue and Red.

First we have some kinda vague “energy” that attracts Keith to Blue:

Then we have this part where Keith just … closes his eyes and senses Red somehow??

(These both happen in the first episode, I might add.)

Like I said, this could be some kinda sixth alien sense. But, I do also wonder if it was Blue trusting & calling out to Keith specifically, which is interesting considering he’s not even her paladin.

- Also in the first episode, when they find Blue, Keith & Lance are the first ones to approach her. Keith even reaches Blue before Lance does!

And then they’re both standing right in front of Blue, side-by-side, when she wakes up.

There is still a close-up on Lance when Blue awakens––but even so, everyone else has much more of a one-on-one first interaction with their lion, so this scene in particular stands out to me.

- Other than in the first episode we don’t get much of Keith interacting with Blue in s1 (except for him saving Blue for Lance in s1e06, which is cute!)

But then there’s also this moment in s2 where he starts asking Coran about whether there might have been Galra on earth before, and whether that could have something to do with Blue being on Earth:

Which is especially interesting now that we know that Keith is part Galra. So …. is it possible the previous Blue Paladin might’ve been Galra?? or even could have been an ancestor of Keith’s?

Then of course we have Lance emerging from his room at the mention of Blue, and accusing Keith of “having his eye on the Blue Lion since day one”:

This is … kinda odd considering Keith hasn’t outwardly shown any desire to pilot Blue as far as I can remember. So, obviously this is a throwback to the very first episode in which Keith first sensed Blue––and the fact that it was brought up again out of nowhere makes me suspicious that there’s Something there that hasn’t quite been addressed yet.

Lance & Red

- *rubs hands together* Now this is Extra Fun because now I know for a fact Lance is gonna fly the Red Lion at some point in s3 because it was in the trailer and all …

:’’))

Unfortunately I don’t get to say “I told you so” because I didn’t publish this post before then, but anyway! I’ve been looking for foreshadow of this and honestly?? If you ask me, there are hints of Red Paladin!Lance since the very first episode. (Again, I’m not suggesting Lance becomes Red Paladin forever, so please don’t kill me. But I do think Lance having some kind of connection with Red has been foreshadowed.)

- So!! In the first episode I noticed that when Allura assigns each of them a lion, she doesn’t technically assign Blue to Lance (because he interrupts her, lol). It’s just kind of assumed that he’s Blue Paladin since, well, he’s flown Blue. Now, I’m not saying he’s not the Blue Paladin––he is! Buuut I also find a couple things about this scene Intriguing:

1) Lance looks like he almost expects to be assigned the lion as Allura describes it (even though he already has a lion), and then seems a bit shocked/upset when it gets assigned to Keith instead.

2) Not only that, but you may notice the Red Lion hovers between BOTH of them, which is noteworthy because this doesn’t happen to anyone else when they get their lion assigned to them. Hmmmmmm…

- This may be an unpopular opinion but I actually … also think Lance shows some Red Paladin traits. Once again, that’s not to say that Lance doesn’t also fit into the role of Blue Paladin because of course he does, but I do think he shows traces of being capable of being Red Paladin as well.

Like listen, when Allura is assigning Red, these are her exact words: “The Red Lion is temperamental and the most difficult to master. … Its pilot needs to be someone who relies more on instincts than skill alone.”

So really the only qualifications here are: 1) Be skilled. 2) Have good instincts.

And Lance?? Fits those qualifications pretty damn well. He’s a skilled pilot, sharpshooter, and strategist. And he has very strong awareness/instincts as well (i.e. being able to identify the Rover clone super fast, being able to come up with a plan on the Balmera on the fly, etc.). There’s no reason why he can’t fly Red if you ask me.

- Also, when the Red Lion gets fire power for the first time Lance is like, “I want that!!” which is interesting … especially because (at least as far as I can remember) no one else expresses jealousy for another paladin’s lion that way.

And generally I just find it kinda funny that Lance accuses Keith of having his eye on the Blue Lion when Lance has like…canonically had his eye on the Red Lion from pretty early on.

- In addition to all of the above, there does seem to be some foreshadow about Keith getting separated from Red (at least temporarily). i.e. he has that dream about Red rejecting him.

And there’s also that vision he has in BoM where Red is far away from him.

(Tag yourself I’m the people screaming.)

Could be coincidental …. or could be intentional to foreshadow something about a certain someone else temporarily taking over as Red Paladin.

- And lastly: it may not mean anything, but in GoLion (the original anime) Isamu/Lance was Red Paladin … So, could be a nod to the original!

And yes, he wore a blue outfit but piloted the Red Lion, don’t question it. Color coordination hadn’t been invented yet.

What Does It Mean?!

- In general, there seems to be a lot of subtle foreshadow that there is Some kind of connection between the Red and Blue lions––or at least, to an extent, Keith and Lance have connections to each other’s lions as well as their own.

- It could mean they are both capable of piloting each other’s lions. I’ll say it again––I’m not suggesting a permanent lion swap or anything along those lines, because both paladins also have very strong connections to their own lions. (Also, I’m not sure about Blue Paladin!Keith at this point, although it’s hard to say since we don’t really know what the quintessence of the Blue Lion is yet.)

However, I think in certain situations their lions could be accepting of the other’s paladin (which of course we know is possible since Keith has piloted Black before, and in the s3 trailer it appears he does so again, as well as Lance piloting Red). So, I feel like that could be important.

- As for the reason behind this connection: It could be because their elements balance each other out (you know, the whole fire-and-ice thing), but what I’m really hoping is that there is some significance in the relationship between the previous Red & Blue Paladins (interpret that however you want––but yeah like, maybe they were good friends??? or …. more than that????) and their lions built up a strong connection because of that (or vice versa).

- TL;DR: I think it’s pretty much inevitable that Red & Blue/Keith & Lance have some kind of special connection (space ranger partners™ amiright) and if you ask me there are a lot of signs pointing in that direction. That’s all, bye.

A Wrinkle In Time is The Most Amazing™

So you may have heard that the best Chris™ will be in a new Disney film coming up. Or perhaps you know that the director of 13th, Ava DuVernay is the first black woman to be given a $100m budget to make this movie. Or maybe you just saw the boss ass picture of Oprah in her full makeup.

Whatever it is, you’ve probably heard that this movie is happening. Now, I assume that many of you read the book growing up like I did, but in case you didn’t, I here to tell you why it is The Most Amazing™

1. It is a SMART sci-fi novel for children. It doesn’t pander. It is complex and goes into a lot of cutting edge science (from the 60’s when it was published) and was almost rejected because it was considered too “adult.”

2. It has a 12 year old female protagonist. Back in the 60’s you didn’t have a lot of women and girls as the leads of anything, and certainly not leads in a sci-fi world. But meet Meg Murray, the fucking best. She is totally subversive of so many tropes that males usually inhabit (angry and acts out because of an absent father, oldest sibling responsibility, etc.) , plus her own set of personality traits and struggles that just make her a really wonderful well rounded character. This is another reason why 20 something publishers rejected it back in the day. Also in case you didn’t hear STORM REID (12 Years A Slave) IS PLAYING HER AND I AM HYPE FOR THIS.

3.It’s a really beautiful marriage of science, magic, and religion. Meg is assisted by three Witches who guide her along a journey across time and space and they respect all three of these things, which I think is pretty remarkable. Plus, this means that the majority of the main characters are women.

4.It introduces children to the idea that their relationships with their parents will be complicated. While Meg loves her father (portrayed by Chris Pine) she comes to see that he, as all other authority figures are imperfect and that she must solve some things herself. Once again, the theme of a young woman claiming her own agency is a powerful one, and its accomplished in a really nuanced way.

5.Meg isn’t good at everything and that’s ok. The narrative reenforces that no one is perfect or good at everything but everyone has their own value and strength that uplift others. Meg begins the story feeling frustrated she isn’t as athletic as her 11 year old twin brothers, or a genius like her parents or 5 year old brother. She has another scene where it shows she struggles with the fact she isn’t nearly as remarkably beautiful as her mother (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) but in the end she learns her own talents still matter.

6.Lastly, it teaches that empathy, compassion, and love, are all strengths. I know were all reveling in Wonder Woman and how it had the theme that you can be both powerful and kind, strong and loving, so guess what YOURE GUNNA LOVE THIS STORY.

I’d really recommend checking out the book, and of course SUPPORTING THE HELL OUTTA THE MOVIE. I promise, it’s going to be something truly special.
