Hypothetical Handplates scenario in which Sans realizes he can teach himself Common.

(Ugh, tumblr is making them blurry for some reason so I guess full-view if you want the not-blurry version??)

Convoluted explanation incoming. Handplates is an Undertale fancomic by @zarla-s and if you like Papyrus and Sans, go read it, is good stuff. So I guess this is an AU fancomic of an AU fancomic? I dunno, the idea wouldn’t leave my brain until I did something with it. So. Zarla did a Christmas doodle where Gaster gave the boys a box of ginger cookies that had the word COOKIES on the side in big letters, and because my job gives me way too much time to think about random stuff, I realized something.

In Handplates, Gaster taught the bros to read and write Wingdings but deliberately did not teach them monster Common (ie: English) so they can’t read his nametag or anything. Thing is, Wingdings is a 1:1 substitution cipher for English. Every Wingdings symbol exactly equals an English letter; it’s not a different language, just a different set of pictures. As somebody who has taught herself a fair number of substitution ciphers, there are a few things you look for when you’re trying to translate a code and you don’t have a key in front of you. Most notably, single-letter words (in English they will usually be A or I) or double letters next to each other. Like the OO in “COOKIES”.

Sans is smart. Gaster has fed them junk food before and odds are good Sans knows how to spell “COOKIES”. The word is on the box in huge letters and Gaster just said it out loud, so it is fresh in Sans’ mind. That double-O is a huge tip-off. He would put it together that the word on the front of the box matches what’s inside. Once you figure out a few of the letters, it becomes steadily easier to decode the rest.

I feel like Gaster exposes the boys to enough Common (the nametag, food wrappers, computer monitors, the books Sans sits on) that Sans could pick it up with a proper starting point. Papyrus probably not, because he had a hard enough time with Wingdings, but Sans is eager for any opportunity to undermine Gaster and I’m sure he’d jump at the chance. In this comic he elects not to tell Papyrus, though. He doesn’t know Gaster has cameras in the cell (or even what a camera is) but he’s figured out that Gaster can spy on them somehow, and the last time Gaster caught them learning something he didn’t like, Papyrus got the ever-loving hell beat out of him. So Sans keeps quiet about it for now. And thus starts the long-standing tradition of keeping important secrets from his brother.

On the technical side, it took me a freakin’ week to sketch and outline this whole thing. Coloring and shading only took me like a day. In the meantime Zarla actually kinda addressed the cookie comic, but this was almost done by then so oh well. I’m finding my poses and proportions turn out a LOT better when I’m doodling skeletons, like what, drawing basic anatomy will make you better at anatomy, you don’t say?? A lot of this was a self-challenge to see if I could imitate Zarla’s art style, and I referenced previous Handplates comics a lot for the backgrounds and Sans’ face. Full disclosure: Gaster’s pose up there is basically copied from Zarla’s original comic because I was rushing through to get on to the actual meat of the story. He’s just here for setup. I had fun trying to figure out how to do his Lost Soul head though. Also, I hate Papyrus’ face from the front. Also also, it was tricky trying to convey “mentally translating an unknown alphabet into a known one” when pretty much everyone who sees this comic is already familiar with the “unknown” one and not the “known” one, but I think I pulled it off.

TL;DR- I imitated somebody else’s style to do an AU of an AU; I am not Zarla; Zarla is the creator of Handplates and also Gaster’s pose in the first panel; I like ciphers too much and also I gave the cookies icing because that is the only kind of ginger cookie I know.

A Good Brother

Since he was a little boy, Charles Weasley saw Voldemort as his personal boggeyman. Even if  he’d never met the man in person, little Charlie was terrified of that person who’s name shouldn’t be said that made his parents sad and angry. He would ask every night for his  parents to check under his bed if he wasn’t there. The idea of a mass murderer hiding in his son’s room always started an ugly laughter in Arthur Weasley’s throat. But every night, he complied and assured Charlie he was safe and had nothing to fear. It was a lie of course. They both knew it.

Charlie knew he was right to be scared when he was eight and he saw his mother cry for the first time. He entered the kitchen one morning and saw her curled on her chair, a piece of parchement resting on the table. Charlie sneaked in to try and read the paper. His first fear was that something happened to one of his brothers. Because that was what his dad and mum often talked about when they thought Bill and Charlie were asleep. The words were small and complicated, but Charlie could decypher two names, Fabian and Gideon. His parents hated lying to their children, so they told them that their uncles were fighting You-Know-Who and died.  They didn’t say they were killed, but Charlie kind of understood that. He wasn’t sure what death really was just yet, but Bill told him it meant he would never see his uncles again. When he saw the twin caskets, a couple days later and watched them disappear in the ground, Charlie cried. He didn’t make a noise, because no one was talking, and you’re not supposed to be loud if everyone else is quiet. He simply gripped Bill’s hand and followed him around. For years, Charlie would dream of twin caskets in which his siblings were resting.

At school, Charlie was gentle and popular enough that people didn’t make fun of him if he ever got surprised crying because he was missing his brothers and sister. They would simply go look  for Bill, and later Percy, and either would comfort him and help him write letters home. Charlie was terribly bad with words and never knew how to get his thoughts across. In return for his letters, he would get drawings and pictures. He kept them preciously in his bedside table.

When he was thirteen, Charlie kissed a girl. She was pretty and smelled nice but even he didn’t feel much. There was no butterfly or firework in his belly like he’d been told he’d feel. At sixteen, Charlie kissed a boy, and though it was nice enough too, it wasn’t special enough to have him wanting to do it often. He’d learned about dragons the previous year though, during a class of Care About Magical Creatures. That lit his eyes up and made him daydream far more than any kisses could.

Charlie left Hogwarts the summer before Ron entered it. He left home in August, and headed to Romania to study dragons. He’d already read every book from the Library and was ready to meet people who’d understand his passion. Charlie made friends, and was teased for chosing a hermit life  in forests with giant lizards over becoming a Quidditch star. He didn’t mind, because at the end of the day, he got to see dragon eggs and share hot cocoa with his colleagues. The highlight of his year was still when his parents and sister came to visit. He also managed to get Bill to drop by. They got drunk and Bill listened to him cry about how much he missed all of their siblings. Charlie kept the drawings and photographs in a tiny box in his trunk. When spring came around and he received Ron’s letter asking him to smuggle a baby dragon, all his friends exploded in laughter and were ready to go before he even finished his explanations. They already knew Charlie would do anything for his siblings.

Charlie wasn’t there when Ron got hurt saving the world at the end of his first year. He came back for summer and bought Ron as many candies as he could eat. Sometimes, being a good brother is in discreet celebrations.

Charlie wasn’t there when his baby sister got possessed and left for dead in a mythical chamber. When summer came and Ginny left school, paler and more silenced than ever, Charlie kept a vigilant  eye on her. He didn’t go back to Romania for months. And when Arthur won the Daily Prophet Grand Prise Galleon Draw, Charlie was the one to suggest they should all go visit Bill. Sometimes, being a good brother is knowing your presence and a change of scenary are the best medicine.

Charlie was there when the Death Eaters attacked supporters celebrating a victory - or drinking the bitter taste of loss away. He went to fight alongside the Ministry to protect his siblings and everyone who needed it. He also stayed the rest of the summer in the Burrow. Sometimes, being a good brother is making sure your siblings and their friends have an open ear if they need to talk their fears away.

Charlie wasn’t there when Harry, his adopted but estranged sibling, watched Voldemort come back from the dead. From Charlie’s childhood nightmares. He learned about it in one of Ginny’s letters and got his worst burns when her words resonnated in his head as he was tending a dragon. In his head, Ginny had that same terrified voice as when she was twelve and asking him if Tom would come back. Charlie felt like he’d been lying to her for years, telling her she was safe and had nothing to fear. That Tom would never come back. Sometimes, being a good brother is forgetting how life doesn’t always follow your hopes.

Charlie wasn’t there when his father got attacked by an evil snake. Charlie wasn’t there when Dumbledore’s tiny army raided the Ministry. He came back to see the greying hair on his father’s head and the scars on Ron’s arms. Ron laughed it off. Charlie cried it out. Sometimes, being a good brother is shading tears other people won’t cry.

Charlie lived in Romania. He loved it, loved the people, the country, and above all his job. But when Charlie came back to Bill’s comatose and broken face, he considered never leaving again. Bill had always been his best friend, his safety in the chaos that was their family. Charlie hugged Fleur and helped her chose her wedding dress. He was Bill’s best man and joked, more than once, that Bill was actually the best man he knew. The three of them got drunk at a pub a few miles from the Burrow and he recalled every embarassing moment of Bill’s childhood. Sometimes, being a good brother is making your sibling blush and hit you in the face as their fiancée is bending in laughter and coughing beer out of her nose.

Charlie wasn’t there when Fred died.

Charlie was there to see his mother cry and his brothers collapse.

Charlie was there to see Ginny stand, tall and proud and clutching Harry’s hand so she wouldn’t get lost.

Sometimes, being a good brother is knowing that there are days when you can’t be the good brother.

Charlie was there when Victoire was born.

Charlie was there to see Bill cry and his siblings scream.

Charlie was there to hold the tiny baby and let her grip his finger.

Charlie was there when Ginny wrote that she was pregnant and wanted to see him. Everytime.

Charlie was there when Fred II asked to learn how to fly and neither George nor Angelina had the heart to teach him.

Charlie was there when Lucy got in another fight with her parents and needed a place to let her anger out. He was also there to bring her back home and make sure she’d apologize to Percy.

Charlie was there when Hugo felt inadequate and lonely in their giant family.

Charlie was there to talk about kissing boys and girls, about how sometimes people liked it and sometimes they just didn’t care.

Charlie was there to give pets as presents, as siblings and in-laws pretended they didn’t know about it.

Charlie was there every step of the way in his nieces and nefews’ lifes.

He quickly needed a larger box to gather all the drawings and pictures he kept receiving. (Hermione gave him an enchanted one)

Sometimes, being a good brother is being a good uncle.

hey, my name is ana, im from colombia, (i'm actually not sure why i'm writing this in english) anyway, i've been wanting to learn korean for a while now, i learned hangul but the thing is that i don't know where to continue or what resources i can use, since it's really hard to find something korean related here; so i just wanted to ask you how you started learning and how do you manage your study time. I hope i didn't bother you ^^

Hola Ana!! :D Learning hangul is the first step, asi que comenzaste bien! c:

What I did: learn hangul, build some vocab with memrise, and then not improve at all for months because I had so many resources that I didn’t know which one to pick. I did check a few lessons of TTMIK and I used the textbook My Korean 1 (made by an Australian University, I think), but to be honest I didnt improve as much as I could have. Now I know the two reasons why: 1. TOO MANY RESOURCES: I was accumulating resources, books, sites, EVERYTHING, but didnt actually pick one to use. 2. Lack of discipline: I didn’t make time to actually study.

Know that I’m more experienced I highly recommend yall to not repeat my mistakes lmao. PICK ONE TEXTBOOK OR WEBSITE AND STICK TO IT. Don’t worry about missing out extra information or whatever. Only look for another explanation if the first one you used wasnt clear enough and you really couldnt understand, but AFTER TRYING; annotate, practice, review, and if it is still unclear then switch to another (reliable) resource. I’m NOT saying that every explanation is going to be accurate and should be trusted, but if it isn’t correct you will probably realize it after you become more comfortable with the language.

Everyone praises TTMIK and they deserve it, they have awesome lessons. My advice is that you find their curriculum (on their page) and start. But remember: DONT STOP. You dont know what to do? Go to the next lesson. As simple as that. Listen to the audios, repeat what they say, read aloud, make flashcards with the vocab and say “I will learn ALL THIS WORDS by the end of the week”, make your own sentences to practice vocab and grammar points, KEEP GOING. You can even skip some lessons (advanced learners are gonna kill me for saying this tho). Dont stress over “but what im a gonna do after i finish all their lessons?!?” You’ll cross that bridge when you get there.

Another option that I recommend for grammar is using the book Korean Grammar In Use (Beginner). It has a lot of grammar points with simple explanations, sample sentences, conjugations and exercises. You can pair it with the TTMIK lessons if you are a little worried about not getting enough practice.

For vocab I suggest the list of ‘Most common verbs/adjectives/nouns’, and I think some people have already created them on Memrise/Quizlet/Anki (I personally prefer quizlet).

I try to study at least 5 minutes a day. I’ll make a full post soon about how I’ve been managing my time these past few months, but this is what I try to do every week:

  • Grammar: it can take just 30 minutes to make notes for a grammar point. How many G.P. you do is up to how much time you have. I’m doing 3-5 per week (intensively selfstudying) but I think even one per week is fine!
  • Vocab: make a list at the start of each week (or month) and review every moment you can: before sleeping, while eating, on the bus. It shouldnt take you too much time either: 30 minutes for the list and 5 minute breaks for reviewing. Make goals: Ill memorize this list by the end of the week, Ill review 5 days of the week, Ill review 4 times each day. Be honest with yourself, but try to step out of your comfort zone.
  • Listening comprehension: listen to audios of the lessons, listen without reading the transcript and try to pick up words, listen to kpop too and other media like dramas or youtube videos. Doesnt take much time either and its fun to do.
  • Some kind of pronunciation practice: imitating the audios and reading aloud. If you have a native friend or anyone who knows/is learning korean, talk with them
  • Some kind of writing practice like journaling your day, solving workbook exercises or making sentences with what you learn. Time varies with this. My journal entries take me 5-15 minutes (they are very short but sometimes I have to look up words that I dont know/remember)
  • Reading practice: write the dialogues from the lessons that you study and read them! they probably combine the grammar and vocab you are studying. Also write the sample sentences that they use. Read kpop lyrics and webtoons.

Hope this helps a little bit c: I’ll probably make more posts about this with more information. Lo mas importante es comenzar y seguir! No te bloquees. Si ves algo, aprendelo; no lo guardes para despues.

anonymous asked:

Heya! After a few years of posting original works online, I've slipped back into fanfic, but I'm super out of touch. I'd tried to write fanfic the way I write original stuff, and it just didn't work- I'd written something novel-length and novel-style, but looking back now it doesn't feel appropriate (and the hit count is miserable, haha!). Have you got any tips on the differences between writing original fic and fanfic, and how to jump back into the pit without embarrassing myself again?

Hi there, anon!  Thanks for your question :)

I have personal experience with this struggle, I assure you.  It seems like when a writer first transitions to original work, they feel like it’s a one-way trip – like once you’ve made the shift, you can’t go back.  But that’s purely psychological, and once you overcome it, you’ll be able to transition seamlessly between the two!

Although I’ve found that writing original fiction isn’t all that different from writing fanfiction, I’ll give you a few tips for slipping back into “fanfiction-brain”:

  • Watch (or read) the source material.  Novel-writing is all about being original, with your characters and your writing style – but fanfiction is about creating stories in the world (and in a way, the style) of the original creators.  You wouldn’t write a Captain America fanfiction in the same mindset as you wrote your high-fantasy adventure novel!  So immerse yourself in this separate world and your mindset will follow.
  • Read fanfiction in this universe.  Find some quality fanfic, with similar themes to what you’d want to write (e.g. angst, fluff, etc.).  And read it through writer’s eyes, which means paying attention to how chapters are opened and closed, how long they are, how much detail is included, and, maybe most importantly in your case, how they’re presented and marketed to readers.  Your hit problem may be more to do with your presence in the fanfiction community than anything else!
  • Re-learn the audience.  People reading original fiction are looking for new characters, universes, and conflicts to fall in love with – but fanfiction readers already love the setting and the characters.  They already know what they want, and they’re going to click away if you don’t, in some form or another, give them what they want.  So if you’re writing a complex story that’s tagged as angst, you’re going to need to put some emphasis on the angst.  If you’re writing for an audience who want feel-good fluff – no matter how much your novel-brain is saying, “This isn’t enough to fuel a story!” – you have to include some feel-good fluff.
  • Adapt to an episodic style.  Every installment of your fanfiction is going to need some sort of hook, to ensure that your readers follow up with the next chapter.  Remember that no one is paying for the whole fanfiction, so they have little reason to invest time in something that isn’t gripping their attention.  The good news: fanfiction allows us to be self-indulgent with things like angst and fluff filler, because our readers will likely enjoy it as much as we do.  So the pressure of keeping readers interested is matched with the cushion of filler!
  • And lastly, make use of your personal voice.  Fanfiction is sold by personality, just as much as story – your author’s notes, your summary, and your narrative style – so make sure to develop a stage presence.  This will make it easier to address your readers when asking for feedback, and will likely net you more followers!

That’s all I’ve got at the moment, but if you have another question, send it in and I’ll get back to you!  Thanks again, and good luck :)

If you need advice on general writing or fanfiction, you should maybe ask me!

  • what she says: i love agent kallus
  • what she means: Agent Kallus is one of my favorite characters, but his characterization before "The Honorable Ones" versus after "The Honorable Ones" leaves much to be desire. In Season 1, yeah, okay, he's not that different from every other obviously evil, cunning, arrogant villain, but I bought it because not gonna lie, I'm kind of a sucker for cunning bad guys that claim they're just doing their job but enjoy following it to the letter. Plus, I liked how earlier on, it was like the rebels were the hunted while the Empire were the hunters, with the Inquisitors and the 'ordinary' Kallus being the main hunters, and I was interested in how he was gonna fight Zeb and what exactly happened at Lasan. But then, Season 2 got pretty bad with Kallus since he hardly did anything besides standing around in the bridge of an Imperial cruiser, which the LSG had already said in promotional material for the show that they didn't want him doing that. And then "The Honorable Ones" showed that even though it's one of my favorite episodes because we finally get to see what makes him tick, his morality and knowledge of what actually happens is actually CONTRARY to what it seemed up to that point. What would've been better is if they had put more signs of Kallus's grey morality in previous episodes so that it would flow better. While yes, some things can be alleviated through novelizations of scenes, it sometimes isn't an 'expansion' on the scene and instead comes more off as something like a sloppy retcon/excuse, like when he kicked that Stormtrooper down in the pilot and then the novelization said that he was extremely angry so he wasn't thinking straight (though I don't know if the author was let in on what the plan for Kallus's character arc was, so it's possible he was just writing what he knew and assumed, but the SWR writers + LSG didn't say anything against it during editing...). While I also do like the irony with how he basically led like four Imperials who've gone rogue to their deaths, I do recognize that it's only ironic because he's literally become the opposite/antithesis of himself from S1-S2, since he's literally a STATE SEC AGENT so even if he didn't have anything to do with them getting arrested/killed, being a state sec officer that has switched sides + committed treason would've been ironic no matter what (though I'm not sure if this is an actual complaint or if I'm just nitpicking with this one, but regardless, I still like it, even though it's kind of expected considering the circumstances.) (the author for three of those characters didn't know about Kallus's character arc either, but you know who did). I don't like that because of the time skip, we've skipped how Kallus got from the ending of "The Honorable Ones" to where he is in Season 3, meaning they SKIPPED THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. I'm torn between if he should live at the end of "Zero Hour", because if he lives, then they have a chance of giving him proper character development, especially so if they introduce the Mercenary/the Fool, and this plotline can also allow for more Zeb coverage that he desperately needs (in addition, we could get more bo-rifle fights, because I also thought that fight back in "Droids In Distress" was cool and that they should do more like that again), but then again, he could die to establish Thrawn's credibility and with that leaked picture, there's a pretty small chance of him trying to make his way out of the mercy of everyone on that ship. I'd still be up for a Kallus novel or comic or short story or something that delves some more into his character, though. So anyway, yes, while I do love Kallus, I wish they had done better with his character arc so that I could say with confidence that the stuff that happens to him was indeed on purpose and say that it is one of the best character arcs I've seen so far.
My personal thoughts on all of the Nicktoons (so far as of May 2017)
  • Doug: Cute, sweet show. I love it. Sad how it tends to be labeled as "boring" now- it's still a great show. And of course it kicked off the whole "slice-of-life cartoons" trend so that's pretty cool. And yes, I did like the Disney version. But it's nowhere near as good as the Nick version.
  • Rugrats: Probably one of my favorite cartoons ever. Funny, clever, great characters, great music, great '90s aesthetics, and Klasky-Csupo's style is perfect. One of THE best Nicktoons..too bad it got dumbed down in 2001. Ugh...it was such a great show and then I don't know what happened there. Rugrats in Paris should've been the finale. But...even the later episodes are better than it's spin-offs.
  • The Ren and Stimpy Show: While I'm not the biggest fan of most gross-out shows, I LOVE this one. I'm pretty much with Mr. Enter on how most gross-out cartoons seem to be TRYING to be R&S but rarely getting it right. The characters are hilarious and it's so weird, it's funny. But the less about Adult Party Cartoon; the better.
  • Rocko's Modern Life: Amazing show and I'm really excited for the TV movie...whenever that's coming out. I love the visual style, the music, the characters, and I'm sure I love it even more as an adult than I did as a kid (and I did love it as a kid)
  • Aaahh!!! Real Monsters: Another great show (really, Nick was at it's highest point in the '90s, but the early-to-mid '90s especially). Love the characters, the intentionally ugly style...it's just great. Shame it tends to be so underrated.
  • Hey Arnold!: One of the greatest cartoons ever and probably the best Nicktoon ever. I love how it never tried to shy away from more mature themes that other kids' shows wouldn't try touching and it did a great job at it. Looking forward to the Jungle Movie, and of course...Helga was the best.
  • KaBlam!: I loved it as a kid. As an adult, I REALLY wonder why. The wraparounds try way too hard to be "hip", just akwardly shoehorning in references attempting to be the next TTA or Animaniacs, but falling completely flat. Characters were annoying but the voice acting was awesome. I do need to give the show credit for making me a ska fan. Most of the individual shorts kind of sucked but Action League Now! was hilarious and The Off-Beats was cute. And of course...
  • Life With Loopy: Yes I had to give this it's own mention because it's just that good. Nick really needs to give this one it's own series because the campy and surreal nature mixed with the overall sweetness was just a perfect blend, and the animation style was pretty awesome. The title character is just so perfect and so underrated. And I LOVE how aesthetically '90s the whole show is.
  • The Angry Beavers: Another one that's pretty underrated. I always really loved this show. I love all the banter and ad-libbing between Norbert and Daggett. And the music was great. I still listen to "Beaver Fever" and "I Think I Like You" now and again (also...Salem and Zim as beavers. How could you go wrong there?)
  • CatDog: Everyone hates this show but I really loved it. I love the character designs, CatDog themselves, and the theme song is NEVER going to leave my head. Sure, it's no Rocko or Hey Arnold!, but it's still a funny show.
  • Oh Yeah! Cartoons: Unlike KaBlam!, this one had different shorts in every episode rather than just four main short series, so it would take too long to go over all of them (not to mention that a good chunk of them aren't even online!). A lot of the shorts on this show were really funny and had some great visual styles. And Mina and the Count still needs a TV show.
  • The Wild Thornberrys: Really loved this show; I was the "animal kid" in my class so obviously I really liked this one. I just really love Klasky-Csupo. The movie was awesome and so was the show.
  • SpongeBob Squarepants: One of the funniest cartoons ever. While it got annoying seeing it become a schedule clog, the earlier episodes are still great. I heard that it got itself out of seasonal rot (look, let's pretend most of what came in-between the movie and the second movie never happened), but I rarely watch Nick anymore so I wouldn't know. Let's hope so.
  • Rocket Power: Not one of my favorites as a kid or as an adult (I wasn't really into the extreme sports craze), but my friends really liked it so I watched it with them and yeah, I enjoyed what I saw. It does have it's funny moments and while it's incredibly cheesy and way too late '90s/early 2000s that it hurts, it's a fun watch just for the cheese.
  • As Told By Ginger: A great show that I don't think I really appreciated enough until I got older. I guess I was just a LITTLE too young when it was new and by the time I was older and getting more into it...the show got cancelled. It's a really great show and one of Nick's best slice-of-life shows.
  • The Fairly OddParents: Really funny...for the first four seasons. S5 was when it started to slip and everything after that just got worse and worse. I still have fond memories of watching the older seasons and they're still good...but let's hope that jump to Nicktoons meant something.
  • Invader Zim: Great show, great animation, great character designs...did NOT deserve to be screwed over. I'm really looking forward to the TV movie. But...while I do love GIR (though he's not my #1 favorite character), the whole Hot Topic worship of GIR was pretty annoying. Let's face it- 2006/2007 on the internet was a bad time.
  • ChalkZone: Really cute. Admittedly I like the worldbuilding elements and characters a little more than the actual episodes (I did love all of S1 though; I think it was the best season), it's still great. S4 was...not the best though. From what we know about the canned S5, it was probably gonna be a lot better but...Nick had to be Nick. Let us have S5, already. And really- why didn't we get a ton of Snap merchandise?
  • The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius: Good show but I liked the movie more. Had some really funny moments and is so aesthetically early 2000s that it's pretty fun looking back on.
  • My Life as a Teenage Robot: Loved this one and I wish it got more recognition. Jenny was absolutely adorable and she was a hero to me as a kid (okay, looking back...I'm sure I had a crush on Jenny). Sad that the network treated it like shit.
  • All Grown Up!: The special was good. The first season was pretty good. After that I felt like I was reading glorified Rugrats fanfic. All it was really was "Ginger Lite" as ATBG was dealing with the heavier stuff while this was all the leftover stuff. Rugrats was great and had an interesting premise. AGU! was more of the same.
  • Danny Phantom: This was the last Nicktoon I REALLY loved as a kid. A really good show that could've gotten even more awesome had it's own creator not fucked it up. Ugh...I want a revival but PLEASE let it be by Steve Marmel and not Butch. Also Sam was like...my hero...as a preteen. And I've got tons of purple and black in my wardrobe (and the same purple lipstick) now that may or may not have been influenced by her (well, that and/or the fact that those are my favorite colors anyway). Like many others...I totally had a crush on Danny as a kid.
  • Avatar the Last Airbender: Okay, admittedly...I was never into this show. But I praise it for it's themes, animation, story...while I personally couldn't get into it, it still is a great show and probably the last really good Nicktoon for a while. And yeah- we don't talk about that movie.
  • Catscratch: I didn't really see enough of it but what I saw I liked. Wanted to see more but it came and went really fast.
  • The Xs: While the previews for it looked pretty good, I...did not like it. I watched it when it premiered and everything but it was a letdown. Felt like they were trying WAY too hard to make their own version of The Incredibles but with Erin Esurance-esque animation. Voice acting was great though (I noticed that Wendie Malick was the saving grace for TWO bad 2005 cartoons)
  • El Tigre: Okay this was RIGHT around the time I was starting to lose interest/outgrow Nickelodeon. Had a great premise and could've been a really good show and I was looking forward to it, but it felt like tons of other flash cartoons at the time and the voice acting could've been a lot better (great talents- direction-wise though...). Maybe if I were a younger kid when it came out, I would've liked it more, but...it was annoying. But the creator has made some other great stuff and I STILL need to see The Book of Life. I'm kicking myself for not seeing it in the theaters due to my work and college schedule.
  • Tak and the Power of JuJu: Didn't play the games but I already knew the franchise was pretty much dying by the time the show came out. It was awful. And we never heard from Tak again...
  • Back at the Barnyard: The movie had it's problems but was at least watchable. The show was just annoying and unfunny.
  • The Mighty B!: Unpopular opinion, but...I really loved this show. It has problems, but there was something about it I couldn't hate. Bessie was just such a great character. Wasn't a big fan of the grossout elements but otherwise it was really funny. Not a great show, but I was entertained enough.
  • Rugrats Pre-School Daze: YES THIS IS A REAL SHOW. Ugly art style (I'm pissed that K-C didn't use their signature style and went for something more "cutesy"; it just looked awful), bland writing, and really not a very interesting series. No wonder why it only lasted four episodes and didn't even air in the US until 2008 after all the episodes were released direct-to-video as bonus features on those Tales of the Crib DVDs (the less about them, the better). All it felt like was a desperate attempt to keep a dying franchise alive.
  • The Penguins of Madagascar: I was pretty neutral to the Madagascar franchise- saw the first movie in theaters and it was alright; wasn't dying to see the sequels so I never did. The show however never did anything for me.
  • Fanboy and Chum Chum: While I was already losing interest in Nick around 2005-2007, this was right around the time where I was officially done. I was a teenager at this point and not into this stuff anymore, but I stuck around for the old SpongeBob or FOP rerun and well...guilty pleasure Mighty B!. Then they changed the logo. And then this show came out. God...it was SO annoying. Annoying theme song, annoying characters...animation style would've worked a lot better if it was in 2D rather than CGI; it just fell way too deep into the uncanny valley for me. I wouldn't say this was the final nail in the coffin for me though; it was definitely the logo change.
  • T.U.F.F. Puppy: Didn't like it. Jokes weren't that funny. I did love the character designs though.
  • Planet Sheen: Sheen didn't need a spinoff. This was one of the worst ideas ever.
  • Kung-Fu Panda Legends of Awesomeness: Liked the first movie (I need to watch it again), haven't seen the sequels but I should. Was bored with the TV show.
  • TMNT: Haven't seen it but I've heard nothing but good things about it. Maybe I should check it out.
  • The Legend of Korra: Heard it was pretty good, but as I wasn't really into Avatar I probably wouldn't be too interested.
  • Robot and Monster: Never saw.
  • Monsters vs. Aliens: Saw the movie and it was...alright. Didn't think it was warranting of a TV series. Didn't watch it.
  • Sanjay and Craig: Saw some of it while waiting for another show to come and...I never wanted to watch it again. Not a fan of the character designs and it was really unfunny. But it's better than Breadwinners.
  • Rabbids Invasion: I did like the Rabbids games as a preteen but...by this time, I don't think they were that popular anymore. Didn't watch it. How is it still running?
  • Breadwinners: Worst Nicktoon ever (so far). Ugly characters, awful animation, shitty writing...how did this get greenlit? Nick...just because "it's for kids" doesn't mean "we can half-ass it"
  • Harvey Beaks: What's this? A GOOD NICKTOON? Yes- it's such a cute show with cute character designs, really nice animation...it's got a nice, nostalgic feel to it while also feeling like something brand new that Nick hasn't done. I'm pissed that it was screwed over.
  • Pig Goat Banana Cricket: Like Monsters, I like how it's "intentionally ugly" and some of the jokes/line delivery managed to be pretty funny, but is otherwise pretty meh to me overall. I'd like it more if I were seven, because hey, that's the show's target audience.
  • The Loud House: I'm glad it has positive representation (thank you for including gay parents in one of your shows, Nick!), but otherwise it's just too bland and cliched for me. Nice character designs; animation could be better. Again, I'd probably like it more if I were in the target audience.
  • Bunsen is a Beast!: Haven't watched it. Don't plan on it, either.

anonymous asked:

Do any of the asks you recieve annoy you? Because I've sent asks you both answered and didn't and I'm scared I bothered you at points.

Asks that tend to be deleted fall into 1 of the following categories:

1) Ask a question that has been covered a few times already (this is partially my fault for not tagging posts thoroughly enough; I’m working on this) - questions regarding my audition/recording process for Breath of the Wild are currently the most common offenders.

2) Asks made by Anonymous posters that contain questions unlikely to have detailed/interesting answers [Ex: Why is Revali so jealous of Link?]

3) Asks that have anything to do with characters’ reactions/actions/behaviors concerning lewd or questionable material (Seriously, folks, I’m not interested in elaborating on how Revali would respond to Link making sexual advances, or Teba to seeing Rule 34.)

4) Asks requesting audio skits/responses that are either too generic or - conversely - too random to be worth pursuing [Ex: “Requesting audio of Teba’s response when he gets hit by one of Revali’s arrows”, etc.]

5) The person asking has been sending me 2-3 questions a day, and I’d like to give focus to others for a bit.

6) The Ask is one of those ‘pure praise’ posts that is being made while Anonymous. [If I responded to every single one of these examples that showed up in my inbox, there would be serious cause to assume I’m just tooting my own horn from how much of my blog would be word-for-word repeats of the same positive feedback]

As a general rule of thumb, Asks made while Anonymous are at least 3x more likely to fall into the realm of being unanswered simply because it removes my ability to connect with someone directly instead of a faceless anyone. I don’t know if I’m answering a new visitor or someone posting for the 20th time, and too many of them risk me coming off as being a ‘fake celebrity’ making up questions for himself to then answer.

on the second years

Short meta this week – I swore to myself I wouldn’t write one but god, fuck this show.

It seems our third year arc is finally over, after half a season of build-up and two incredibly emotionally charged episodes in which everything finally came out.

However, though our third year arc has come to a close, this show isn’t anywhere close to leaping off the angst train. I’ve seen this coming for several episodes actually, and I would have been very, very sad if it hadn’t been addressed – but like in so many aspects, Sunshine has continued to exceed my expectations in every way.

Of course, the show is also really, really gay. Every episode I tell myself “this must be the most gay Love Live will get”. Each new episode continues to prove me wrong, and Episode 10 is no exception.

Spoilers up till episode 10 under the cut.

Your analysis of Len's speech patterns is so amazingly detailed and wonderful. Sometimes while writing Barry I feel like I fall into too much of a generic voice so I was wondering if you've noticed anything that's really specific to Barry's speech?

I totally feel you, anon.

I think because Barry is the protagonist, and because he’s this kinda nerdy (but not super nerdy) guy who gets enthusiastic about things he loves, deals in sarcasm and dry humor sometimes, and tries his best but leads with his emotions… well I think most people who write him end up doing so in part by projecting themselves onto him? Which there’s nothing inherently wrong with, and I’m sure I do it too, but it means he ends up sounding like us, or else not like anyone distinct, rather than as himself. It’s something I work hard to avoid in my fics sometimes, tbh.

Anyhoo, I also find his speech a little harder to dissect because there’s fewer things that just jump out, relative to Len’s. So I’ll talk about his patterns that go along with his specific word choices, like body and voice and such.

Because for starters, speech is at least half body language and facial expression. Barry uses broad, wide, gestures, especially with his arms and sometimes his whole body. He’s very kinetic, often pacing or moving or walking over to someone, and moves a lot when he’s emotional about something. Not that he can’t be subdued, but if he is, it’s for a reason, typically an emotional one. He’ll curl in on himself a lot too, if his energy is low, but if he’s subdued but has to face someone, then you just get a hunch to his shoulders unless he has to square off against them.

He’s also a freaking bobble head, often giving his head a bit of a shake side to side, for laughing or teasing or disagreeing or exasperation. When he’s embarrassed or guilty he ducks his head, when he’s overwhelmed or exhausted he runs a hand over his face, when he’s tired but trying to focus he runs it through his hair and when he’s shy and hedging about something then he scratches the back of his head. When someone (read: when Iris) is upset with him, he’ll touch his face and then drop his hand then do it again, desperate and pleading, curling his fingers and uncurling them as he brings them toward his mouth then tries to barrel through an apology. That’s when he’s confronted. When he’s more ready to genuinely apologize, he gets more subdued.

Things Barry will say, hmm.

Well, he’ll start a sentence and trail it off before getting straight to the point. A momentary hedge, so to speak. None of these are direct examples from his speech, but I bet you can imagine him saying all of them: “Yeah, about that…” and “This is… Look, you know as well as I do that–” and “I don’t know I just… There has got to be some way to fix this.”

That last one brings me to another point. Unlike characters (*cough*Len*cough*) who stress sometimes strange words to clearly hammer-home a point, Barry tends to only emphasize verbs in his speech, particularly the copula (basically, the first verb in the sentence). “What I do know–” and “We have to do something” and so on, and he tends to do it when he’s louder. (Thinking currently of “what I am is the guy who’s not fast enough to stop Wells!” from 1x22, where he actually enunciated the ‘fast enough’ bit as well, which is a rarity for his speech patterns).

That reminds me, in line with that, Barry has a tendency to sometimes ask questions in one breath and answer them in the next. He’s not really asking, he doesn’t say “what” but he poses things like a question. “Watching that happen in from of me? Living that? It was real to me.” (which he said about Earth 2).

Oh yeah, volume. Barry shouts when he’s angry. He gets quiet when he’s ashamed.

He also brings other people into his speech. The example from above “you know as well as I do”? Well he does things like that, bringing the person he’s talking to around to his side by verbally including them in his statements. “You and I both know” and “We’ll think of something” and so on. He actually starts a lot of sentences with “you” it seems (contrasted with some people who have more “I” focused language). It shows a sort of mindset where he connects with his team and the people around him, brings them in to his perspective. An interdependent mindset.

What else? His sense of humor is something I feel like people miss at times? Barry’s not really laugh out loud funny, but he’s the first to smirk at an off-color joke (unless he’s already in a bad mood to begin with), or to widen his eyes at something awkward someone said. His actual humor tends to err on the side of a little self-deprecating but he can also direct it outward, normally slightly scathing and sarcastic. Actually, a good comparison would be Steve Rogers’s sense of humor in The Winter Soldier, if you’ve seen it? A bit of a troll when he’s in a good mood or flirting, but also dry as a freaking desert sometimes.

He’s also cocky, and when he is, he’s all smiles and humor and teasing people like “you know you love me” kind of stuff. He gets this ridiculous swagger and it’s adorable.

When he’s annoyed or frustrated, that “for real?” attitude comes out too.

Actually, that makes me think: he uses pretty clipped sentences. His speech patterns aren’t complex by any measure. The sentences tend toward short and have two clauses, at most, or you could interpret them as often having two clauses but those are very short and simple clauses. No run-ons in his dialogue, no excessive adjectives or adverbs except to emphasize and qualify. His speech is plain and not flowery (outside of romantic situations, at least). He doesn’t tend toward long speeches or explanations unless or until he’s put on the spot. His rambling is so awkward because he doesn’t normally get to talk and ramble, so when he does it spirals lol.

He also has a tendency to qualify things (unlike Len, lol), but he especially qualifies absolutes as absolutes. What do I mean? When he tells Joe about Earth 2 Joe West, he says “but you didn’t like me… at all.” He qualifies the statement “you didn’t like me” by making it even more absolute than it already was (whereas a typically qualifying clause hedges a sentence and makes it less absolute, not more). This is just sort of in line with his tendency, stated above, to give part of an idea, pause, then add the rest. To ask a question then deliver the answer, or to hedge and then get straightforward.

Actually, that’s kind of neat, isn’t it? A lot of his speech is like a 1 step, 2 step kind of thing. (Another example of how this works, in the Time Vault in 2x17, “this Barry – your Barry?” He gets hyperspecific, even though he’s using the words here to manipulate).

For a more granular reading, unlike Len who uses words like “gotta” and “ain’t” and those extreme contractions, Barry doesn’t over-contract at all. He’ll use “gonna” maybe, but not “oughtta” (it would be “ought to” or some in-between of “ought’ta” almost), but does say “outta” instead of “out of”. Doesn’t say “lemme” but rather “let me” and doesn’t say “y’know” but “you know” (some of those are in contrast to Joe’s speech patterns, for the record). Barry uses “wasn’t” but more “’s not” rather than “isn’t”. “It’s not right” not “It isn’t right”. Mostly regular contractions other than that, like can’t and shouldn’t, it’s and “that’s” so on, etc.

Barry’s also comfortable starting sentences with conjunctions, like ‘because’, ‘and’, and ‘but’ quite a lot. That’s typical of human speech though, if not formal writing.

And… this post is long enough so I should probably cap it there, rather than trying to dig around any more. If you have specific questions about his speech or movements or want more detail on anything I’ve brought up here, let me know!

The lyrical genius that is Sara Bareilles: cracking open The Blessed Unrest

Today i crack open The Blessed Unrest for you. Sara has been nominated for a Grammy five times now and her most recent work was nominated for “Album of The Year” at the 2014 Grammys. While these nominations are based on several factors, I know for sure that the quality of songwriting is taken into account, and she is certainly no stranger to writing songs that are as poetic as they are insightful.

It isn’t uncommon to cast all the attention on the choruses in pop music, while the verses gather dust like the body of literature on your bookshelf. So today we’re going to be looking at the verses behind a majority of the songs on The Blessed Unrest. Verses are just as important as the chorus. Sometimes I hear “Brave” being criticized for its “repetitiveness”, but this just means some people fail to grasp the content in the verses. (Which, hey, we all do that, so don’t fret)

Brave

“everybody’s been there / everybody’s been stared down by the enemy / Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing / bowed down to the mighty / but don’t run / and stop holding your tongue.”

Have you ever hid away from society because you fear being the victim of prejudice? Have you ever hid away from society because you were too depressed or too anxious or too sad or too messy to go out? This song was written for Sara’s best friend who was struggling to come out as an adult, but the song has taken on many incarnations ever since its release, and it’s been quite a ride to watch it all unfold. I tweeted Sara about my own “brave” moment in January, which was when i decided to seek therapy and counselling, to pull me out of my grief that stole much of my life in 2014. (I talk about this in my Manhattan post) I never knew she would actually respond to me, but she did. And i have the picture up in my room now. Whenever I have a bad day, I have something to look up to. A kind reminder from a kind and lovely soul.

Chasing The Sun

Capture the feeling that my earth is somebody’s ceiling

“as the echo of heartbeats from the ground below my feet”

“can I deliver in sound the weight of the ground?”

“all we can do is try and live like we’re still alive…”

If I had to choose one set of words, one sentence, just one, from the entire album, it would the bolded words above. “Capture the feeling that my earth is somebody’s ceiling.” I mean… how incredible? She captures mortality without sounding depressing. She captures the truth without having us turn away. It is simply pure poetry. This track is one of the best on the album indeed. Play this while you drive around the city. Play this on your morning walk to work. Play this with the windows rolled down. It’s the celebration of life and something we should all participate in, and if we need a soundtrack to inspire us, this one fits the bill. It’s gratitude in song-form. The drums are full of life, the strings, the choir-like outro. Listen.

Manhattan

“I’ll gather up the avenues and leave them on your doorstep / and I’ll tiptoe away / so you won’t have to say / you heard me leave…

“and so it goes / one foot after the other / till black and white begin to color in…

“holding us in place is simply fear of what’s already changed.”

Satellite Call

“this is so you’ll know the sound of someone who loves you from the ground.”

1000 Times

“In another life my teeth and tongue would speak aloud what until now I’ve only sung”

“cause love is a cage / and these words on a page / can carry the pain / but they don’t free it…”

“in another life I wouldn’t need to / console myself as I resign to / release you…”

“nothing could be worse than the risk of losing what I don’t have now”

Eden

“no way to make the pain play fair / it doesn’t disappear just because you say it isn’t there”

Cassiopeia

Sara wrote this song after having received a book from a friend about constellations. This shows her abilities to draw inspiration from almost anywhere, in fact, this shows that the best songwriters can find inspiration almost out of anything, and then create a narrative that is both interesting and emotionally stimulating.

All alone in a corner of the night sky
Spiral bones of a supernova starlight”

Islands

“it’s like I’m standing on the edge with just a telephone wire / trying to get to you first to say the world’s on fire…”

“you always dirty up the windows / if you keep em’ at bay that way no one’s gonna surprise you / by getting too close…”

December

“The leaves are all still changing / the weather here is mild and vacant. “

“The artificial cold is more than I was hoping for / but not enough to consume the darkened state I’m in…”

“But to get yourself a new life, you’ve got to give the other one away / and I’m starting to believe / in the power of a name / cause it can’t be a mistake / if I just call it change

  • Ginny: Hey, Harry, so the baby is coming soon we should start thinking of names.
  • Harry: Oh yeah! Any ideas?
  • Ginny: Um well we already used your dad's name and Sirius's name - we could continue on that path? Naming kids after people we love?
  • Harry: Yeah definitely.
  • Ginny: Well, I've been thinking, if it's a girl, we could go with Lily Luna.
  • Harry: Love it. And a boy?
  • Ginny: No idea. What about you?
  • Harry: Hmmm let me think.
  • Ginny: We could name him after Colin, that would work. He died far to young and was such a great friend. Or, hey, Hagrid! Oh, he'd love it if we named our child Rubeus. Awww, let's do that, Hagrid has done so much for us over the years.
  • Harry: Wait Ginny what if he named him after Dumbledore.
  • Ginny: ... I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. What about Neville?
  • Harry: What about Severus?
  • Ginny: Haha, good one. Um ... Remus! Oh, gosh, let's name him Remus.
  • Harry: No wait Ginny hear me out, here. Let's go with Albus Severus.
  • Ginny: Yeah, no. Maybe Alastor, for Moody? Oh, or Dobby? Although, that might be a bit weird for a name. I know George already has a son named Fred, but maybe a middle name?
  • Harry: Ginny, come on, let's go with Albus Severus.
  • Ginny: Wait, you're serious? Why?
  • Harry: It's perfect.
  • Ginny: Did you miss the part where I said 'after people we love'?
  • Harry: But Ginny-
  • Ginny: Are you telling me you want to name our child after to people who lied to you their entire lives? Snape bullied you to no end, Harry! He hated your guts!
  • Harry: No, he didn't he liked me.
  • Ginny: He liked your eyes only because of some creepy obsession with your mother that lasted years after she got married to someone else and died!
  • Harry: Yeah, Snape was pretty cool, wasn't he? And Dumbledore-
  • Ginny: Didn't tell you shit and sent you on some long journey with no information that only led to your death -
  • Harry: I didn't die!
  • Ginny: HE WAS EXPECTING YOU TO! Merlin's beard, Harry, I'm not having this conversation with you! We are not naming our son after those two!
  • Harry: But they were good men at heart-
  • Ginny: THAT DOESN'T JUSTIFY THEIR ACTIONS! Grawp and Ludo Bagman were good men at heart, too, but we're not naming a child after them!
  • Harry: Actually, that's not a bad idea.
  • Ginny: No. Albus Severus is better than that.
  • Harry: So you like it? YES! I'm so good at naming children. I can't wait for little Albus Severus to be born. Oh, Ginny, let's go and tell everyone what we've decided to name him. I'm so happy!
  • Ginny: ...
  • Fuck you, Harry.

anonymous asked:

I'm a longtime follower of your blog and I was wondering if you could explain what happened regarding the bankruptcy of 38 Studios.(i tried looking through your archive but I didn't see if you touched on it) From what I've gathered reading you a $75 million dollar loan is a lot to create a AAA game. A lot of the lawsuits that were launched against the studio post bankruptcy seemed to suggest that maybe it was a scam... tho maybe it just did that badly in sales?

This is more of a business question than a development one, but I actually understand this stuff a bit (and researched the situation since I was contacted by a recruiter for 38 Studios back around that time) so I can try to explain it to you. It’s a little mathy, but I’m sure you can follow.

Once upon a time, the state of Rhode Island noticed that other states like Texas were getting a lot of economic growth after enticing tech companies to set up facilities in their cities with financial incentives (tax breaks, loan guarantees, etc.). The tech companies would bring large numbers of upper middle class employees to their cities, spurring additional economic growth via spending their money on restaurants, houses, cars, and so forth. The state of Rhode Island, eager to get some of that economic growth itself, decided to offer some similar financial incentives like tax breaks and loan guarantees to tech companies of a sufficient size to convince them to set up shop in Rhode Island.

A state loan guarantee means the state basically co-signs your loan. If you cannot pay off the loan, the state is on the hook to pay it off for you. By offering this as an incentive, Rhode Island’s politicians believed that they could grow a local tech sector that would bring prosperity to everyone. Give them some help obtaining seed money, then grow it into a strong and healthy economic center. One of those tech companies they attracted was the ill-fated 38 Studios. 38 Studios took out a $75 million loan with a state guarantee and used it to set up shop in Providence back in 2010.

38 Studios already had another branch in Maryland that was working on development of their first title - Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning, but wanted to begin development of the much more ambitious project called “Copernicus”. It was supposed to be a next-gen big budget MMORPG, developed during the time when everybody wanted to make the next big MMORPG, and the bosses at 38 planned to use the $75 million loan guaranteed by the state to pay for its development.

However, the $75 million loan guarantee came with strings. The Rhode Island bureaucrats had requirements that had to be met before they would allow the loan guarantee to go through. 38 Studios needed to set up a facility and bring at least 450 jobs to the area by the year 2012. This target was amortized over a milestone schedule - X employees moved or hired in Rhode Island by Y date in order to maintain the guarantee. Because 38 Studios needed to meet those relocation/hiring milestones to keep the loan guarantee, they staffed up a lot faster than they were actually ready for. The development of Copernicus became troubled, mostly because they hadn’t done the preproduction development necessary to outline production work and that a MMOG is a huge undertaking that requires an awful lot of work - more than they had expected, and in different fields than they had expected. The studio was getting too big too fast, and it lacked the core technology and planning to allocate those developers properly. The costs began spiraling out of control as they struggled to find work for some  already-hired devs and hire others to fill key roles that were missing.

It all came to a head when 38 Studios ran out of money in May of 2012. They had been banking on the proceeds from sales of Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning (which had been finished and released by then) in addition to the loan money to fund the continued development of Copernicus, but Amalur did not sell as well as they had hoped. One day in early 2012 38 Studios wrote a check for their regular loan payment and it bounced. Nearly three weeks later, the studio managed to cobble together the loan payment but then they lacked the funds to pay their employees for that pay period. Shortly thereafter, 38 Studios filed for bankrupcty and laid off all of their employees.

38 Studios, now bankrupt, had to default on the remainder of its $75 million loan, which meant that the state of Rhode Island had to pick it up instead. By this time, the politicians who had been in charge had been ousted and replaced by newly elected officials who were not as enthused with the idea of paying so much money for a failed company. This lead to the state of Rhode Island suing the leadership of 38 Studios not once but twice in order to try to recoup some of the losses incurred. In the end, the remnants of 38 Studios’ stakeholders settled the first lawsuit for $4.4 million, and a second lawsuit a bit later was settled for an additional $2.5 million. Despite all this, the state of Rhode Island had to eat the remaining $28.2 million loan balance after it was all over.

Ultimately, it wasn’t so much a scam as it was an inexperienced studio biting off more than it could chew. 38 Studios rushed into AAA MMOG development without a solid plan in order to take advantage of those loan guarantees and it burned them badly. They spent too much too quickly and hid the fact that they would need significantly more funds to complete the project. I firmly believe that it wasn’t a scam, however - Curt Schilling, the founder of 38 Studios, lost over $50 million of his own money because of it all. If it were a scam, somebody would have made some money off of it. Sadly, that wasn’t the case for anybody involved except perhaps the bank. The developers that moved to Rhode Island lost their jobs, the studio leadership lost millions of their own money, the Rhode Island taxpayers ended up paying for a bad loan guarantee, and the game was never completed.

Got a burning question you want answered?

Season 4 head cannons/game changer
  • So I have no clue what's going to happen at the end of season 3. I surprisingly haven't seen many spoilers from the finale lol. However, I have seen some very vague spoilers and from what I gathered, I definitely could be wrong, they are not going with the game changer.
  • Now I already wrote a post saying I personally think it would be cool if they did the game changer and the show actually didn't end. Because let's be honest, we all know the game changer could be the end of the show. BUT if it got renewed I think it would be interesting. But yes everything would change.
  • So I have so many head cannons on if the game changer happened
  • -time skip (but only like a year because I wouldn't want them to go through more than that) I imagine the "game changer" would come to an end by the time the kids are ready to go to their junior year of high school preferably the summer before
  • -Maya and Zay get SUPER CLOSE. Can't y'all just see it?! I have so many head cannons for them alone, that's for another post
  • - Of course Maya and Riley are still the bestest best friends in the land! FaceTime, snapchat, text, call you cant keep them apart lol. When things first go back to normal there is a little awkwardness because that's normal but overall they are SOLID 🔥👌🏾
  • -rucas tries, they really do, but obviously that doesn't work out lol. I ship rucas I really do, but only for Riley's first BF. I think with this game changer, their relationship wouldn't last. Shit from the spoilers from the finale it doesn't even look like Riley and Lucas are going to try 😂 at least in my head cannon they would try and really like each other but just can't make it work. When the game changer ends they realize they still have low key feelings for each other and that insues a LITTLE drama but quickly they realize they are both different and it is never the way that it was and that's the end of that but they are still great friends.
  • -Joshaya kind of falls apart. Well not really falls apart per se. They said someday so... But I think with the game changer realistically, Maya wouldn't see Josh. So they don't really fall apart as much as, no new developments with them, actually, Josh gets a new girlfriend or something and Maya starts dating other guys. Basically they don't really see each other for the duration of the game changer. They probably won't see each other again until Maya is like 16-17 (and I've made my feelings for joshaya very clear before. I have head cannons galore for them lol that's another post for another day)
  • -Riley has changed, grown up. Now Riley is always going to be Riley. She is always going to be positive, look at the best in things and have a certain innocence to her but after the game changer she is different. Not lost different, but more grown up. She is for the better. Listens to some cool music that she learned about and wants to share, her clothes 😍 imagine it now. She has met new people, done new things, some things that may/will be surprising to her friends. Everyone is impressed and almost in awe at the new Riley. Again she hasn't changed drastically, she is definitely still Riley but she is more grown up. Everyone is here for it.
  • - Farkle and Smackle have broken up by this point too. They are still friends but it fell apart somewhere lol. Now here's where things get dicey lol I ship Riarkle I mean who doesn't but I want riarkle done the right way, I saw someone describe it as a slow burn. IF riarkle did happen I would want it to be when they were older, possibly junior/senior year. Farkle is now one of the low key hot popular guys, he has options and recently has been turning up 👀 (not in a true fuck boy way because Farkle is too good for that. He was just one of those glo ups that people started to notice, which happens a lot in high school) but lol head cannon riarkle happens in a very casual way Riely and Farkle hanging out, doing homework, laughing, play arguing (maybe Riley teased him about his latest "girlfriend"), and somewhere between laughing and playful jabs, kisses happen Lol I want riarkle to be THE friendship to relationship on this damn show lol I want laughter, friendship, the MOTHER FUCKING BURN. Honestly to me i would rather no riarkle than Riley still low key liking Lucas riarkle that's why I'm happy af Riley and Lucas are together right now. GO RUCAS! 😄
  • -although Maya and Riley stayed as close as could be there were things both did that they didn't tell the other about. Post game changer, things are admitted, great friendship moments, more growth, more Maya and Riley balance.
  • -Topanga was LIVING for the game changer but glad things are back to normal, her wardrobe is BOMB
  • -Auggie and Ava. Oh lord! when your a kid it's harder to get through something like this. Post game changer Ava gives Auggie the cold shoulder feeling betrayed and she made new friends. Poor baby Auggie honestly had the hardest time with the game changer and post game changer. Auggie and Ava, like Cory and Topanga go through some "lost years" (BMW reference) but FTW IF NO OTHER couple on this damn show is endgame Auggie and Ava are. At the end of everything Auggie and Ava will grow up and get married. And I think THAT is going to be a damn story.
  • -Cory just goes with the flow completely in love with his wife and kids, tries to give lessons when he can. Learned A LOT from the game changer very happy for the experience. Post game changer makes corny jokes about his experience and uses accents 😉
  • -I have nothing specific on Lucas or Smackle. And Zay, I would need a whole other post to do head cannons on him 😍

Can’t Keep This Beating Heart At Bay [m] (another awesome angsty “Alec fucks Magnus on his wedding night” fic)

said the Spider to the Fly [t] (post-marriage Lydia fic with Lydia/Camille and hints of Lydia/Izzy plus Magnus/Alec)

Okay and since most of that stuff is pretty angsty, let’s end with some stuff that’s more happy haha.

fighting is easier with you at my side [t] (post-1x06, Magnus MAY have exaggerated a bit just how weak he actually was from healing Luke)

Snapshots [m] (super sweet established relationship Magnus/Alec fic)

Take My Last Name [g] (adorable Luke/Jocelyn proposal fic)

the medication flowing through my veins was you [m] (two-part established relationship Magnus/Alec; part one involves Alec doing Izzy’s job for once, ~seducing a target at a club and part two has Magnus’s reaction to that)
