  • “barbie as the princess and the pauper” has the most solid storyline, as well as being the most well-remembered and well-loved of the barbie movies of the 2000s. the characters are engaging, and the romances are surprisingly solid. (even if annelise and erika were clearly gay for each other, their love interests still had likable personalities and good dynamics with the girls.) the music has also held up incredibly well, albeit with a lot of cheese.
  • “barbie as the island princess” has a cliche but entertaining storyline, but has the strongest music overall. the side characters are also remarkably well-done, and it avoids falling into the trap of the boyfriend’s intial fiancee being evil – luciana and ro become friends instead. it also has some genuinely emotional moments.
  • “barbie in the nutcracker” has probably the strongest script overall, as well as tim curry. the cgi is shit nowadays but it was good for the time, and the ballet sequences are still very fun.
  • “barbie in swan lake,” although not as well-remembered, is a solid family movie, with beautiful music and ballet sequences, as well as a really cool villain. its storyline isn’t the best, but it’s a solid 90 minutes of fun.
  • “the barbie diaries” was a huge oddball in the canon, but in my opinion, it’s underrated. yes it’s probably the stupidest and the most predictable, but it has songs written by kesha (no, seriously, look it up), and it’s an admirable attempt at something different.
  • “barbie as rapunzel” ABSOLUTELY INFLUENCED “TANGLED” AND YOU CAN’T CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE. features a surprisingly clever twist at the climax, as well as a creepy villain, and it’s a different take than most rapunzel stories.
  • “barbie and the magic of pegasus” is the first original barbie movie, which warrants applause on its own. the story is fun, and it’s nice to have a love interest with a proper Tragic Backstory
  • “barbie and the diamond castle” features some of the most fun side characters, as well as some pretty good music. should’ve been gay, though.
  • “barbie in the christmas carol” deserves credit just for casting BARBIE as SCROOGE. did not see that coming at ALL.
  • “barbie and the 12 dancing princess” is kind of underappreciated. admittedly it’s not as memorable, but it does a good job adapting a lesser-known fairytale.
  • the fairytopia/mariposa movies are their own thing and need their own post, which i’m not gonna do because i barely remember them. i do remember i really liked the first mariposa movie as a kid, tho.

…these are thoughts i actually dwell on and type out, apparently

youtube

everyone’s out here uploading their fan art for ethan @crankgameplays and pictures with him and i wanted to do something to show him how much he matters to me… so i wrote him a song.

i did my best to make it NOT creepy and i think i did pretty darn well! although to be fair, I am studying songwriting in university and I AM technically a professional musician.

ethan, i really really hope you see this and i hope you know how important you are to ME and to countless other people.

blue haired boy, i adore you <3

So in less than 2 months as a solo artist Harry has released a single that debuted at #1 and #4 in the UK and US respectively, performed on Saturday Night Live to positive reviews, was profiled for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, sold out his first world tour in less than 30 seconds, made guest appearances on Graham Norton and the Today Show, released a music video that now has over 23 million views, did a four night residency on The Late Late Show which produced a Carpool Karoake segment that’s gone viral (it’s still trending #16 after 3 days), has released an album to critical acclaim that is now #1 in both the UK and US and broke a Nielsen record in the process, racked up more than 272 million streams on Spotify and Youtube, and has performed a concert at the Troubadour. With. Stevie. Nicks.

Seems like things are going pretty well?

My New Audio Sigil Method

A little while ago I tried my hand at making an audio sigil. I like how it turned out, but it was a bit too complex. The range of tones was just too great. It was great to make a track and just listen to it, but I wanted something that I could easily play on the piano, hum, or whistle. So, I rethought how I chose the tones that represented the letters of the alphabet. I decided to use just one octave of notes, no sharps or flats, just the 8 notes starting on C. After I dropped the vowels, the letters fit perfectly. Here’s what I came up with.

Note = Letter of alphabet

  • C = B, K, S
  • D = C, L, T
  • E = D, M, V
  • F = F, N, W
  • G = G, P, X
  • A = H, Q, Y
  • B = J, R, Z

Getting from a statement of intent to musical notes looks like this. “I sleep peacefully” get rid of vowels and repeated consonants “SLPCFY” translate into musical notes “CDGDFA.”  Now my audio sigil is quite simple and easily played/sung/hummed/whistled/etc.

Here, let me play it for you.

I am very happy with how this method turned out. It will be pretty easy to whip up a sigil in the morning for that day and whistle it as I go about my business.

It was pretty embarrassing, apparently you had spit the detail out to him the night before, when you were drunk. “Kookie” you whined and pouted, hoping it would make him shut up. “Look Noona” Kook said, raising his brows to mention towards the elder member walking into the dorm with his cell phone at hand. You glared at Kook before you punched his shoulder and tried to get away from him. “Ow Noona!” he groaned, causing Jin to look up, confused. “Y/N, why are you hitting Jungkook?” he asked as he sat down beside you. You opened your mouth to respond but Kookie beat you to it. “She’s upset cause I’ve been teasing her about being in love with you hyung” Kook said casually. Jin’s cheeks turned pink and yours did as well. “I’m so sorr-” Jin cut you off with a shy smile. “I love you too y/n” he confessed.

“How long have you felt this way?” he asked.

Chat Noir loves musicals.

It really shouldn’t surprise me. Cats exists, of course he loves musicals. After he found out I’m into musicals, it’s all he talks about when we’re on patrol. But I can’t even remember how we got on the subject. I think I was humming a few bars of ‘76 Trombones’ from The Music Man one day and he recognized it instantly. He started talking about various musicals he’d seen, either live or recorded, musicals he wanted to see (Hamilton and The Lion King topped the list), and his favorite songs from each. Which leads me to my second discovery.

Chat Noir has a beautiful voice.

Inside the super-sized Glee reunion on The Flash-Supergirl musical crossover

Darren Criss is singing his heart out. Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist are tap dancing. “It’s literally a Glee episode,” Gustin jokes. No, the Fox series hasn’t been revived. The trio are actually reuniting for the first time since their days on the Emmy-nominated hit series for a different kind of musical — and Criss may finally get his revenge.

His Glee character, Blaine Anderson, received a slushy facial from Gustin’s Sebastian Smythe back in 2012, but now the tables have turned, with Criss assuming the mantle of the dastardly DC Comics villain Music Meister in the highly anticipated Flash/Supergirl musical crossover. “It is funny that the last time I worked with Grant, he was the bad guy and he was singing at me, and now I’m the bad guy singing at him,” Criss says. Though it’s a different set, with the quick turnaround and prep, Criss concurs that this all feels familiar. “It’s just Glee,” he says.

In the March 21 episode of The Flash, Barry (Gustin) and Kara (Benoist) find themselves trapped in a movie musical of the Meister’s creation — an hour that has been years in the making. “We’ve always talked about doing it, from the very beginning, more in a joking way,” says executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. Gustin, however, was initially curious. “I didn’t ever think it would be a real thing, so when they told me it was real, I was like, ‘How?!‘”

Here’s how: As the Scarlet Speedster and Girl of Steel experience turmoil in their interpersonal relationships, they’re whammied by the Music Meister, a less mustache-twirling, more manipulative villain who causes victims to break into song. The character was famously voiced by Neil Patrick Harris in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated series. “I have made a pretty decent career of only taking over roles as made famous by child stars,” jokes Criss, who also played the titular wizard in the Harry Potter musical.

“I could not be happier that he’s here,” gushes Benoist, whose Glee character Marley Rose was mentored by Blaine. “He’s killing this role. He’s bringing such a fun energy, the way he did on Glee as well.”

Being fans of movie musicals as kids, the power-stripped heroes end up trapped in a golden-age send-up involving rival gangs and their kids falling in love — though expect many of the couples to come with a twist. The only way out? Follow the Meister’s script till the end. It may be a prison to them, but it’s heaven to Benoist. Noting she was born in the wrong era, the actress takes delight in the vintage ambience while sitting on a ’40s-era nightclub set. “Not that I don’t love the [Supergirl] suit, but it just feels good playing the same character in a completely different setting,” she says. “I’m eating this up.”

The Glee alums aren’t the only big names attached to the special episode. In a nod to Kara’s favorite film Wizard of Oz, everyone else in the vocally impressive cast is playing a character within this movie, from Jesse L. Martin, Victor Garber, and John Barrowman as rival mob bosses to Jeremy Jordan’s club pianist and Carlos Valdes’ aspiring artist busboy. Cherry-picking the movie musical genre — West Side Story, Singing in the Rain, and Guys and Dolls among the show’s inspirations — the hour also features some original songs, including “Runnin’ Home to You” from Oscar-winning La La Land duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, as well as the bubbly and playful Rachel Bloom co-penned tap duet “Super Friend.” “It’s a goofy song and it’s very consistent with that style of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” Gustin says.

“We were approached by Rachel Bloom, who reached out to us and she really wanted to write a song for us,” Kreisberg explains. “And Greg [Berlanti] had a relationship with Pasek and Paul, so we sat down with them — we hadn’t even seen La La Land with them, but Greg had been such huge fans of theirs.”

The episode also includes several covers, among them the Benoist solo “Moon River,” and an ensemble performance of Jackie DeShannon’s “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” that brings the denizens of the ’40s nightclub to their feet as the Meister conducts Jordan, Valdes, and John Barrowman in an epic, upbeat dance number choreographed by Glee’s Zachary Woodlee. “Some things are just star-crossed,” Valdes says of his two worlds — superheroes and musicals — colliding. “Some things are just destined and written in the stars. This felt like one of those instances where it was just something that was going to happen.”

Jordan concurs: “Ever since they announced the cast of our show — plus the casts of Flash and other shows having so many musical theater people in them — it was only a matter of time before they harnessed those talents and made something into it.”

All involved have unquestionable talents when it comes to singing, but Barrowman says the DeShannon piece doesn’t play to his strengths: “I’m exceptionally confident vocally, but they show me the dance steps and I’m not a hip-hopper, no way,” says Barrowman, who practices his moves on set between takes. “I panicked.” Still, Barrowman was determined to be involved once he learned of the crossover. “I hadn’t heard anything and I just basically then said, ‘I think you would be daft or stupid not to have me in this, really,‘” he says. “But they planned on it all along.”

On the flip side, Gustin says he was excited about slipping back into his dance shoes. “More than anything else, my true foundation was tap dance,” the actor says. “It’s been cool to get back to it.” Adds Benoist: “It’s funny how things stay in your muscle memory. It was fun to pick it back up again and see your body and be like, ‘Oh, we remember how to do this.'”

With everyone in one room, Barrowman admits, “I’m a bit fan-boying out to be honest,” explaining that he watched his castmates’ former projects Glee and Smash. “What a nerd,” Jordan responds upon hearing the news. “He plays it super cool backstage, so you wouldn’t know he was geeking out.”

Beyond Glee, the hour marks an even bigger reunion as Gustin and Supergirl‘s Chris Wood — who, along with co-star David Harewood, will guest in the crossover, but not sing — went to school together, while Criss counts Valdes, Pasek, and Paul as classmates. “It’s been a very sentimental crossover on so many levels,” Criss says. “Every day, every scene my mind is being blown. I can’t believe I’m here with Melissa Benoist and Carlos Valdes. ‘How do you guys even know each other? Oh, that’s right, you’re both superheroes!'”

Fun fact: Another classmate of theirs, Andy Mientus, also previously played a villain on The Flash, with Criss joking it’s about damn time he appeared in the Berlanti-verse. “I was wondering why everybody else I knew had been on the show but me,” Criss says with a laugh. In truth, Kreisberg says Criss was destined to play this role. “Darren so brings him to life,” the EP says. “I’m not sure who we would have gotten to do it if Darren had said no, but it turned out to be one of those things where we wanted Darren and Darren actually wanted the part. It was very kismet.”

Should the crossover prove successful, Kreisberg even has hopes for a sequel, and Criss would be elated to return to the wild, wild world of singing superheroes. “I would have liked to have written some songs,” quips the actor and musician, who landed the role too late in the process to do so. “I want to come back, I’m not done — then I’ll have my true payback!” Watch out, Flash!

The musical crossover will kick off at the end of Supergirl‘s March 20 hour, with the majority of the action taking place during The Flash‘s March 21 episode, both airing at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.

anonymous asked:

What do you think everyone's favorite Disney movies are?

Hoo boi!! Let’s see…

Daichi: The Fox and the Hound. Like legit, you know that mother fucker watches this when he’s home sick. He curls up on the couch with tissues (totally for the cold and definitely not for all the tears he be sheddin’ by the end of the movie). He considered changing Pochi’s name to Copper when he first got him but then decided against it because Noya had promised to find him a new home and he didn’t want to get too attached. (Ha. Ha.) Then by the time he realized he was stuck with him, it was too late to change it. He regularly holds Pochi’s paws and says, “I’m a hound dooooogggg.” Suga has it on video and watches it when he’s feeling down.

Suga: If you ask Suga what his favorite Disney movie is, chances are he will tell you “Cool Runnings” or “Max Keeble’s Big Move” just to be a little shit and get you to say, “No… I mean like… you know. The animated ones. Uhm… like when you say Disney movie they’re the ones that pop up in your head…” “Ohh… you mean like the Lizzie McGuire Movie.” “Suga no.” But actually, his favorite is Frozen. Honestly, that “Let it Gosong was LIT and he never misses an opportunity to sing it. “Suga, did you eat the cupcake I told you not to-” “LET IT GOOOO LET IT GOOOOO.” “God damn it.” Or when Daichi is getting out of the shower… Suga kicks the door of the bathroom open, LOVE IS AN OPEN DOOOORRR! “SUGA GET OUT.” He absolutely loves it. He dressed up as a perfect male Elsa for Halloween. Any time someone disses on it, “It wasn’t THAT good…” a fist fight breaks out. Let people enjoy things, you fucks.

Oikawa: Lilo and Stitch. “It’s not because the aliens! Shut up, Iwa-chan!” It’s totally because it’s a heartfelt story about family sticking together and definitely not because there are space ships and aliens and lasers. Nope. Iwaizumi made him a Scrump doll for their fourth anniversary and Oikawa takes it with him whenever he travels and totally, no way, definitely does NOT sleep with it. Nope.

Iwaizumi: Oliver and Company. Despite having the voice of an angel, Iwaizumi has very few indulgent songs that he sings when he’s at home. “Why Should I Worryis one of the few that he actually does belt when he’s in the mood. Just imagine him sliding in his socks around the kitchen as he’s making dinner, singing into a wooden spoon… “Why should I worry? Why should I care? I may not have a dime, but I got street savoire faire.” It’s Oikawa’s little secret that he will never share with anyone. On Iwaizumi’s last birthday, Oikawa dressed up as Georgette and sang “Perfect Isn’t Easy”. Like… he just pranced around the bedroom singing, “Though many covet my bone and bowl, they’re barkin’ up the wrong tree. You pretty pups all over the city, I have your hearts and you have my pity. Pretty is nice, but still, it’s just pretty. Perfect, my dear, is me.” Iwaizumi laughed so hard that he started crying and it was definitely the best birthday he’s ever had.

Matsukawa: A Goofy Movie. And not just because of the memes. Because of the strong familial bond between Goofy and Max and how hard Goofy tries but just can’t seem to get it right. Matsukawa can see a bit of his own father in him, as they had their own troubles back when he was in high school. They got through it and have an even stronger relationship and he can see that in this movie. (but it’s mostly because of the memes.)

Hanamaki: The Princess and the Frog. He’s got that Friends on the Other Side,” song memorized and sings it while he’s…. well… “working”. Also, RayXEvangeline is his OTP and he will go to the grave preaching their love. He used to go catch frogs in the pond near his house when he was a kid so honestly he just has a total soft spot for the little critters. Oh and he thinks Prince Naveen is a total hottie. 10/10 would smash.

Bokuto: Aladdin! Oh man he could watch this movie every day for the rest of his life and never get tired of it!!! He’s even dressed up as the Genie for Halloween more than once! He’s got that “Friend Like Me” song DOWN. He can do all the voices and everything! In fact, one of the main reasons Akaashi fell in love with him way back in high school was because on the few occasions that it was Akaashi that lost some confidence, Bokuto would sing the song to him and change “Aladdin” to “Akaashi” and it never failed to cheer him up to hear, “Mister Akaashi, Sir, what will your pleasure be? Let me take your order, jot it down. You ain’t never had a friend like me!”

Akaashi: Monster’s Inc.! Oh man Akaashi loves this movie so much. One of the only times you can see him visibly get giddy is when this movie is playing. It’s honestly the most adorable thing Bokuto has ever seen and every time Akaashi imitates Boo and says, “Kitty!” in a cutesy voice, Bokuto legit ascends to a higher plane of existence. He definitely plays the jazzy OST in the background when he’s sewing, humming along with the melody. He also may or may not have pushed a small child down in his desperation to get into the theater for the very first showing of Monster’s University. (Also, don’t tell anyone, but he made himself a Sully pajama onesie and definitely wears it all the time, but knows Pain in the Ass Kuroo-san would never let him hear the end of it if he found out so he keeps it a secret even from Bokuto.)

Kuroo: The Emperor’s New Groove. Kuroo has most definitely dressed up as Kuzco for Halloween around the same times Bokuto has dressed up as Genie. (In both the llama and human form.) His ringtone was also “Perfect World” for the longest time, until Kenma changed it one night after getting tired of hearing Kuroo shout out “Me!” after the “This Perfect World begins and ends with-” part before answering his phone.

Kenma: Toy Story. Hey, the less actual human beings in a movie, the better, ammiright? As a kid who didn’t have a lot of real friends growing up, the concept that your toys came to life and loved playing with you as much as you played with them was a really beautiful concept to him. He had always been a really rational kid, and knew that it was fiction, but there was some part of him that always thought, “But what if?” After the first time he watched Toy Story, he started treating his toys more gently, and daydreamed that even his videogame consoles and all the characters within them were alive and got excited every single time he took the controller. Not to mention Sid’s Scare Scene gave him ungodly satisfaction to watch after he acquired a few bullies in primary school.

Asahi: Up! Because… Because… *sobs* they were so in love… and he was such a grumpy old man but then… *SOBS* BUT HE WAS HER ADVENTURE AND OMG DOUG AND THEN THEY WERE WATCHING THE CARS TOGETHER AT THE END AND… AND… *wailing*

Nishinoya: MULAN! Kick ass women and plenty of fight scenes and most importantly… “To be a man, we must be swift as the coursing river. With all the force of the great typhoon. With all the strength of a raging fire. As mysterious as the dark side of the moon!”

Kiyoko: Brave. Strong independent woman that don’t need no man and instead wants to ride her horse and shoot her bow and fight bears and learn to connect and understand her mother? Uhhh…. sign her the FUCK up. Also, King Fergus reminds her so much of her dad that she can’t help but giggle every time he shows up on screen. And that hair animation? ENCHANTING. She can’t tear her eyes from it.

Yachi: Tangled. Oh c’mon. Duh! Yachi is so TOTALLY Rapunzel. It’s not even funny. She relates HARD with the heroine and oh my GOD it’s so cute to see her flouncing around her apartment in her PJ’s, singing, “And at last I see the light! And it’s like the fog has lifted!”

Hinata: The Little Mermaid. REDHEAD. A REDHEAD! Oh man Hinata used to watch this movie every day. He was so excited to see a redheaded Disney princess. His mom bought him a fork just so he could brush his hair with it. He used to have a little fish tank in his room and he named all of the fish after the characters. “I’m going to marry Ariel when I get older!” Little did he know, he ended up being Ariel and falling for the tall, black haired prince with the bright blue eyes instead. Oopsie Daisies.

Kageyama: Finding Nemo. There’s something about small… orange… things that draws Kageyama to them. He really has no clue what the heck it is. He has been caught a few times muttering, “Just keep swimmin’. Just keep swimmin’.”  Under his breath when he’s stressed out, either on the volleyball court or in school. Pretty much everyone has noticed but they’re a little scared that he will stop doing it if they point it out so they pretend not to hear him. It’s just too cute of a habit to lose.

Miya: Hercules. Okay Miya is low key in love with Danny Devito and so anytime he’s in ANYTHING, it’s his favorite thing. Not to mention Meg reminds him high key of a certain tsundere who won’t say he is in love. Although, if he’s being completely honest, Miya relates a bit more to Hades than he does Hercules (I think you mean HUNKules).

Shirabu: Moana. So, Shirabu doesn’t really watch a lot of movies. Okay, he NEVER watches movies. He doesn’t have time. He’s got better things to do. The few movies he HAS seen were pretty much whatever Miyazaki Hayao was putting out and even then, he wasn’t really attached to any of them. Then Moana came out and he was quite literally DRAGGED off to see it by Miya. He swore he wasn’t going to have a good time and sit with arms crossed, complaining the whole movie, but then some ANNOYING asshole laced their fingers together and refused to let go and UGH. So obnoxious. But then that same annoying asshole seemed to have a lot of fun and hummed to the tune of Shiny on the way out of the theater and down the street. And well… it did have good music. And it looked pretty. And then when Miya took him to dinner afterwards, Shirabu had managed to choke out a reluctant, “Thank you” and had to suffer through an exuberant, “What can I say except you’re welcome? But you know… Shirabu wouldn’t be against the idea of seeing more movies in the future….

Welp. That’s what I came up with. Seem fitting? Thanks for the ask, I had a lot of fun thinking about this!

Your impressions about Pied Piper? I'm feeling a little bit hurt because of it, but maybe I don't understad well the lyrics, idk >.<

No don’t feel hurt!! Actually I think Pied Piper has the best lyrics and meaning in the album! I’ll do a quick analysis of the song (pretty dure a lot of people already did one but ayy)

Before starting you need to know the original story of Pied Piper! (here!)

The simple meaning of this song would be that like the piper, they attract ARMY.

But I think it’s deeper than that. BTS identify themself as the piper. The village is the society who wants someone to save them. In this context the music, or art in general, is the solution. BTS are musicians so they are the piper trying to solve the problems of this society through their music (NMD, Baepsae or Am I Wrong for example). But the society reject them and don’t want to pay them for their work. So, as a revenge, they attract us, ARMYs. They make us “leave” our parents/school.

Pied Piper (the song) is a dialogue between the piper (BTS) and the children (ARMYs).

But what I find really interresting and smart is that each member incarnates a different aspect of the Piper.

Let’s take the lyrics (cred to ktaebwi for the translation!!)

“Stop
Now stop watching and study for your exam
Your parents and your manager hate me
The videos you watched, all the photos, Twitter
V App, Bon Voyage
I know it all, what to do when it’s good
Stop, make MV theories later
There’re plenty of my photos in your room anyway
What’s one hour, one two years are going away in an instant
This song is my award for you
Be nice “

Namjoon’s lyrics are so interresting. I see Namjoon as a “paternal” piper. It’s like he’s saying stop to us ARMYs who are begging him to release more stuff. “Look it’s already a lot, your room is a bts sanctury, it’s still not enough for you?” And at the end he gives us what we want, a song. (I also get some major teasing vibes from this oizhgo). Because let’s not forget, he’s a piper, it’s the reaction he wants us to have.

“I’m a little dangerous yet so sweet “ – It’s dangerous but we can’t help it, we are enjoying this too much lmao

Yoonseok’s part is the same, but it’s way more explicit :,^D

Another intesresting part (and it think the most important) is this lyric:

“This is gonna get you nowhere
(Don’t reject me) “

The “don’t reject me”. They talk a lot in this song about how we need them and how we can’t help it. But they also need us. Without ARMY, BTS is nothing. We need eachother :;^DD

SO YEAH it’s just my own opinion of this I’m sure a lot of ppl did better analysis ;0;

Imagine Taking Eggsy Dancing...

A/N: Hey pals! Hope you enjoy this fic - it was a request from ages ago but I’ve been crazy busy with exams. Had my last two today so I should be writing more regularly. ALSO - how would you guys feel about me writing Bucky Barnes as well? Of course, I’ll still write about Eggsy, so don’t worry about that!

Eggsy Unwin stood in the middle of the dance floor, hands in his pocket and strands of hair falling on his face. When you’d mentioned dancing, this was not what he had in mind.

GZtale: Anamnisis - Part 1 (Undertale Comic Dub)
I was able to get this video uploaded on Undertale's 2 year anniversary, so I'm happy and feel accomplished. Comic Creator: https://gz-studio.deviantart.com/...

Can we appreciate how much effort the voice actors and the team to make this Dub amazing?!

The voice acting are so powerful, the editing is very professional, the flaw, music choice, and everything else, it made me smile for the entire video!

I personally love Gaster’s and Ganz’s voice, because the part where they quarrel are so realistic. Young Ganz’s voice actor is also did a pretty good job well! tbh, I like all of it!

If they make another dub for another part of anamensis, boi, I’m getting my ticket to the hype train

( Inspired by an imagine by fandomoftears I really hope you don’t mind me writing this. It was just such a fun idea! )

Warnings : Balthazar does make a sexual comment. This imagine is kinda lengthy. Sorry, I got carried away.

You didn’t want to go; you weren’t really the religious type, but when a few of the Angels offered to go with you on a trip to visit your old family church, how could you say no? Cas accompanied you in your jeep since he knew you hated driving long distances on your own and the two of you met Gabriel, Balthazar, and Lucifer at you mothers house. It really was the oddest situation. You walked through the door to see your mother fawning over ‘how adorable’ Lucifer was and the angel looked surprised at the attention to say the least. Your mother knew about what you did for a living and she was beyond excited when you told her about the Angels. She insisted on meeting them, so this trip really did work out for everyone.

“Oh, (Y/n), these boys are all just so cute! And they’ve been so well mannered. I can’t really get the littler one to talk though.” She whispered the last part, cutting her eyes towards Lucifer.

“Luce, you feeling alright?” You laughed at him and he stuck his tongue out at you.

“Better now that you’re here, (Y/n).” He soon replied and your mother made a small squealing sound, squeezing your elbow.

“He’s flirting with you, (Y/n).” You mother said excitedly. You rolled your eyes. “So, where is everyone sleeping tonight?” She asked, looking around at the five of you.

“Angels don’t sleep, mom.” You said, laughing a bit as you carried your bags upstairs. The Angels had begun following you closely ever since you walked through the door and your mother was more than amused by it.

“I want to stay where ever (Y/n) is staying. We wouldn’t be sleeping much anyways.” Gabriel winked and you turned around on the top step, quickly punching him in the arm.

“Oh, you kids.” Your mother giggled before walking out the front door.

“Could you be anymore obnoxious?” You snapped at Gabe as you reached your old bedroom, throwing you bag on your bed.

“I could, but you keep me on a leash, doll.” Gabriel threw himself on your bed, bouncing once in the air before settling down on the soft mattress.

“Can you boys imagine how many times a sexually awakened, teenaged (Y/n) has touched herself in this very room.” Balthazar waved his hand around the room for a dramatic effect and you groaned in annoyance. “Oh, stop stressing yourself, love. We’ll be on our best behavior tomorrow morning.” He promised, sitting down in your office chair, spinning himself a bit.

“I hope so.” You mumbled before laying down next to Gabriel. “Don’t make me regret this.”

“We’re just poking fun at you, sweets. Now, you should get some rest. Big day tomorrow.” Gabriel seemed more excited than anyone and you didn’t see why. It was just church.

-

“(Y/n), are you sure this is a good idea? Should I be here?” Lucifer was holding your hand like a lost child and you felt kinda bad for him. “Of course I shouldn’t be here. What kind of question is that?” He was uttering to himself and you stopped, turning around to face him before walking through the church door.

“Listen to me, Luce, you’re fine. No one knows who you are and I want you with me. I need you with me.” You whispered to him. He smiled softly at you before taking in a deep breath and walking through the door with you.

“This is exciting.” Gabriel smirked, flopping down next to Castiel. Your mother was sitting in the front row, but you thought it would be best to keep your little party of angles in the back in case they got too rowdy. You were honestly worried at how happy Gabe was over this. He had to be up to something.

“Gabe,” you sighed, leaning forward so that you could see him past Balthazar. He shot you a wink.

“I’ll keep an eye on him, (Y/n). He won’t do anything out of line while I’m here.” Castiel promised you.

“Thank you, Cas.” You smiled a bit at him before the preacher took the stage.

“Let’s get this party started.” Balthazar said, resting his hand on your thigh. You never really noticed how close you were with all of the Angels until now. It was nice.

-

You were halfway through the service and you could tell the boys were getting antsy. Lucifer had both of his hands wrapped tightly around your right one. Balthazar was tapping your thigh impatiently and snickering quietly to you in between sarcastic remarks. Castiel kept leaning forward to look at you every time the preacher said something he didn’t like. Gabriel was just scaring you now. He was quiet. Too quiet.

You leaned forward to get a peak at him.

“Relax, darling. He knows better than to upset you.” Balthazar whispered to you, but you just couldn’t shake the worry you felt.

“There are signs everywhere of the Lord’s presence.” The preacher was saying. “When you’re in times of-” He fell silent, staring towards the back of the room. You and everyone else turned around to see a flag blowing frantically without a bit of wind in the room. Balthazar placed his head on your shoulder to hide his red face as he tried to hold in his laughter. You glanced at Gabe to see him smirking, at the amazed expressions on everyone’s faces.

“Oh my god.” You whispered, turning back around in your seat.

“God is with us ladies and gentlemen!” The preacher began shouting and the room erupted in applause.

“I’m gonna kill him.” You swore, looking up at Lucifer to see him smirking as well.

“He’s not harming anything, (Y/n).” He chuckled a bit. “If anything, he just gave these people a story to tell.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” You sighed, allowing yourself to laugh a bit and settle down in your seat. This actually went pretty well for having four Angels in church.

-

“It was great to see you, (Y/n).” Your mother hugged you tightly before kissing your cheek and turning around to look at the Angels. “Don’t think I don’t know that it was one of you who pulled that flag stunt.” She raised her pointer finger and looked at them sternly before breaking into a smile. “That was the most entertaining service that church has had since (Y/n) switched the piano music with an ACDC song.”

“You did what?!” Gabriel burst into laughter and you giggled a bit. “This whole time you thought that I was going to be the one to start trouble! We should have been keeping an eye on you instead!”

“Oh, hush.” You rolled your eyes before hugging your mom one last time.

“Don’t be shy, boys! Come back with (Y/n) and see me anytime!” She said as the five of you walked towards your jeep. You all waved your goodbyes as you pulled out of the driveway and started down the road.

“I actually had a lot of fun with you guys this weekend.” You admitted to the Angels, smiling to yourself.

“See? We’re not that bad.” Gabriel poked your cheek before turning up a song on the radio.

“Now we just need to meet your father.” Balthazar added with a devious smirk. Gabriel smirked as well when he saw a look of horror flash across your face.

“That is so not happening.”

(Note: This is the part 2 of the interview. To read part 1, click here.)

Stephen Anderson began his career at Disney as a storyboard artist on Tarzan. He then served as Head of Story on The Emperor’s New Groove and Brother Bear, before making the leap to director on Meet the Robinsons.

So how did Stephen first hook up with Disney, and how many Meet the Robinsons-related anecdotes can I squeeze from his brain? Let’s find out in the second part of our EXCLUSIVE three-part interview…

Part 2: Working at Disney

The Disney Elite: You started your career at Disney as a storyboard artist on Tarzan. How did that come about?

Stephen Anderson: I got to Disney through a colleague at Hyperion. I became friends with Kevin Lima, who came to Hyperion to direct a feature adaptation of Thumbalina. His co-director was Chris Buck, who had been my animation teacher at CalArts. I helped out on that film as much I could because I loved the idea and I loved working with those two. Eventually the project got shelved and those guys left. Kevin went to Disney and directed A Goofy Movie and after that, Disney wanted him to direct Tarzan. He chose Chris Buck as his co-director and so, because of those connections, I was able to become a part of their story team on Tarzan. We’ve all heard that cliche about how so much of success is who you know? This was a perfect example of that.

The Disney Elite: After working in Story on Tarzan, The Emperor’s New Groove and Brother Bear, you made the leap to director on Meet the Robinsons. Would you explain how you made that huge transition?

Stephen Anderson: First off, the only thing I wanted to do more than be an animator was to be a director. In fact, directing (and screenwriting/filmmaking in general) really took over the older I got. As a teenager, I started seeing more diverse kinds of movies, learning about filmmakers, reading about how movies are made, about screenplay structure, about what a director is, and I grew to love the idea of moviemaking. It was really the films of Steven Spielberg that changed my path and made me want to be a director. First off, the level of emotion and audience reaction that I saw and felt when I watched his films was something I wanted to be able to give to an audience someday. Loving his films then made me want to learn more about him so through reading articles and interviews and watching ‘making of’ specials, I decided that that’s what I wanted to do. So this was always the goal beyond the goal.

After Tarzan, I became interested in pursuing the Head of Story role and was fortunate to be asked to fill that role on Groove and on Brother Bear. I had asked, before Brother Bear, if I could be considered for a directing position in the future so we were already having that conversation. Since I’d been performing leadership roles, they were open to the idea. I helped develop a project for the studio on the side, during the last year of Brother Bear, with the thought that if it continued, I’d be the director. It did NOT continue. I finished Brother Bear, moved back to California (because we had to relocate to Orlando for that project), and was then handed a script for A Day with Wilbur Robinson

The Disney Elite:Meet the Robinsons was one of Disney’s early entries into CG animated features. While Pixar had already released such brilliant films as Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and The Incredibles, over at Disney there was just Dinosaur and Chicken Little. Was Meet the Robinsons always intended as a CG film, and were you at all nervous and/or hesitant about making it one?

Stephen Anderson: Boy, the memory is getting hazy but, as far as I can remember, MtR was always intended to be a CG feature. Yes, in fact I remember that while I was still on Brother Bear, the announcement was made that the studio was transitioning out of hand drawn. I was slightly anxious about doing CG just because it was something new I had to learn on top of already trying to learn how to be a good director. But to me, the creative stuff is always the biggest challenge and the thing that occupies my mind most of the time. Disney has the best people in the world so I’m always confident that the movie will look good, sound good, etc. And I was lucky to have such great artistic and technical leadership surrounding me. I trusted them to help me out if I was confused or uncertain about the technology. They all gave me a boot camp in computer animation at the beginning so I felt like I had a pretty good foundation starting out and I felt safe asking about anything I didn’t know.

The Disney Elite: Meet the Robinsons was the first of Disney’s CG films that made me think, “Now THIS is the perfect pairing of film and format!” The slick, shiny surfaces of the CG at that time really served to complement the futuristic, retro/moderne look of your film. Not only that, but while Pixar was aiming more and more for a photorealistic approach to their animation, your cartoon was, well, CARTOONY! And not just the backgrounds and characters, but also the animation itself. For a relatively early CG film, you got some gorgeously goofy character animation in there! If you wouldn’t mind, would you make a list of the films – animated or otherwise – that you used as inspiration for Meet the Robinsons?

Stephen Anderson: Well story-wise, we looked at the movie You Can’t Take It With You. It’s also about an eccentric family with quirky personalities and passions. Bill Joyce, the author/illustrator of the book that MtR is based on, told me that You Can’t Take It With You was a huge influence on him when he was creating the Robinson family. With our art director, Robh Ruppel, we talked a lot about The Wizard of Oz and how that movie goes from a sepia palette to a Technicolor palette and that influenced the look of the distant past (when we see Lewis’ mother giving him up it’s sepia) and the future (bright, bold and Technicolor). With the animators, we looked at scenes of Jim Carrey as inspiration for both Wilbur and Bowler Hat Guy. Also a lot of Looney Tunes. We used to say that Lewis is a Disney character and Wilbur and the Robinsons are Warner Looney Tunes characters. Lewis moves in more of a solid, natural, Disney-type of animation and the Robinsons are zippier and invade your personal space more like Looney Tunes characters. Those are some of the main influences I can think of.

The Disney Elite: Another wonderfully cartoony element of the film is your choice of voice-actors. The voice-work often reminds me more of 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoons than anything Disney was doing at the time. I mean, there are some really unexpected picks in there (Batman’s Adam West, Roseanne’s Laurie Metcalf, There’s Something About Mary’s Harland Williams), all of whom do an AMAZING job. Oh, and then there’s YOU – voicing not one, not two, but THREE characters, including the mustache-twirling Bowler Hat Guy! Care to share the story behind that bit of kismet casting?

Stephen Anderson: Thank you for saying that about our voice actor choices. I’ve always been such a fan of those classic voice actors and I liked approaching our casting that way. We thought it best to not go with big names, but just solid character performers. To me, actors who have experience in theater, sketch comedy and improv are really best for animation because they know how to create strong and clear characters.

As far as my involvement goes, it’s pretty simple. I’m sure you know about the work-in-progress reels that we create, where we take our story boards and cut them to temp vocals, music and sound fx. Well, I did the temp voices for those characters and, after several screenings with my voice in there, folks just got used to it and eventually I became the voice of those characters. It was the same with other members of the team. Frankie the Frog, Uncle Gaston and Lewis’ coach, Lefty the butler, the t-rex that BHG unleashes - those were all voiced by members of the story crew.

The Disney Elite: Meet the Robinsons is one of those rare movies that makes me tear up every time I watch it. This is all the more rare seeing as how for most of the film, it’s funny, funny, FUNNY. It seems to me like this kind of emotional punch can only be created when a writer/director is willing to put their own emotions and experiences into their work. Was this true for you? And if so, would you mind sharing a bit of your personal story that effected the story being told in Meet the Robinsons?

Stephen Anderson: The adoption part of the story was not in Bill Joyce’s original book. That was something that two development executives and a writer had built in to the first draft of the script, long before I’d come on to the project. When the studio handed me that script, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. While my story differs from Lewis’, I still totally identified with his quest to know who his mother is and to find out why she gave him up. And the studio had no idea that I was adopted so it was a complete coincidence. Because I understood Lewis so well, I was able to bring out that emotional side much more. It was there in the original draft, but I felt we could strengthen it.

The theme of 'Keep Moving Forward’ evolved out of early discussions about adoption and my personal feelings about it. My parents were very open with me about it and told me I was adopted at a very early age. They used to tell me that when I became 18, I could access my records and find out who my birth parents were and that they would support me in that. So for many years, I looked towards that age as a big milestone and I was determined to find out where I came from. Then one day, I realized my 18th birthday had come and gone and I’d totally forgotten about starting this search. I’d gotten distracted by life, CalArts, starting a career, getting married, etc. And I was so lucky to have been adopted by such a loving family. What would finding my birth parents change? Nothing really. In fact, I’ve heard stories about people having very negative experiences reconnecting with birth parents and that sometimes it makes things worse for them. So the important thing was to not focus on the past but on the positive present and the promising future. And that helped us all realize that that’s exactly what Lewis is going through too.

The Disney Elite. Wow. I’m damned near speechless. That right there made my day, my week, my YEAR. That was incredibly moving and inspiring, Stephen. Thanks so much for sharing that.
