So, I decided to make this post for you guys and I hope you find these tips as helpful as I did :) 

1. Never compare yourself to others, but really, NEVER do it.

From my personal experience, I can tell you there’s nothing more destructive than comparing yourself to another person. Every single one of us unique and has their own amazing skills. Maybe one of your friends aces Physics class but you rule when it comes to Chemistry class or a foreign language. Also never let anyone make you feel like you’re not awesome because you are. As Eleanor Roosevelt would say “No one can make feel inferior without your consent.” So don’t let them and wWhat you do, do it for you.

2. See what you’re missing and do it.

If you pay attention and make fantastic notes, but still you don’t reach your desired goal and you know you can do better, check what is missing. Maybe is studying for the exam. Maybe is handing in the homework. Maybe it can be related to a poor sleep or nutrition. You gotta identify what is wrong and do something to change it.

3. Sit up front.

Again, I have experienced this and when I sit in the back I completely lose my focus and immediately start to talk with my friends and doodling on the back of my notebook. Look for the seats right in the front, you’ll be able to pay more attention to what the teacher/lecturer is saying and you’ll be more likely to get done your work fast.

4. Time management.

As a big procrastinator, I can tell you that not having a schedule or not planning your tasks can be really harmful to your grades. I know sometimes Season 4 of Sherlock sound more fun than Spanish reading but you need to prioritize. Make a list, from the most important task to the least, that way if you do not complete everything, you will have ready the most essential duties. Be strong and work hard, then relax.

5. Eat well and sleep well.

As I wrote in one of the past points, sleep and food can be a really influent factor in your school performance. If you only eat junk food and sleep four hours, you’ll be more likely to fall asleep in class or even to suffer a lack of focus and energy because of not nurturing your body properly. I know sometimes homework takes more time that we expected to get done but if it’s not school work or something really important, you should try not to stay awake (even more if your reason to lose hours of precious sleep is to be scrolling down Instagram or Tumblr, which can be done next day). Eat your veggies and get 8-hour sweet dreams.

6. Stay hydrated.

Drink at least 2 liters of water per day. It increases energy and relieves fatigue, promotes weight loss, flushes out toxins and will get you closer to the perfect skin we all want.

7. Pray

Personally, this has been really important to me, especially when it comes to a big exam or a contest. Praying always gives me peace and makes me feel more confident. I invite you to try it, you’ll see the difference. Also, studies have demonstrated that prayer helps you to have more self-control and makes you less vulnerable to the negative physical health effects associated with stress.

8. Pretend that you’ll have to teach the material you are learning, that way you’ll pay more attention and be more likely to memorize it fast.

Always do your best and remember that good thing take time.

hi cassie :) i've been a fan of the books since 2010 and it's been amazing to see how much they've grown in terms of popularity and audience. I would love to know whether you came up with the idea to write the eldest curses because of how popular Magnus became and the reaction to him or was the idea in your head from the beginning and you decided to finally write it :) also could i be cheeky and ask for a snippet from the lost book of the white preferably featuring Alec....

I was excited to write the story of Magnus and Alec Having An Adventure and Falling More In Love for a very long time, but my ability to do so was limited by the way publishing and distribution worked back in 2005, when I was initially trying to sell City of Bones. There was a lot more resistance to gay characters in YA at that time. A couple of publishers turned the book down because Alec, a gay character, was in it. The Barnes & Noble website page for City of Bones included a review from Commonsense Media where they gave it a content warning for “sexual content” just because of the presence of a gay character even though he never did anything sexual. A lot of big box stores refused to carry the book, and major children’s book clubs passed it over. 


I always hoped for systems to change. As the books grew more popular, and as times changed, I was able to include more of Magnus and Alec as the series went on. In fact, their presence in the story and on the page made a big jump starting in CoFA, at which point I received a surge of criticism from those who were upset that I was writing about Magnus and Alec more prominently. I remember having my books pulled from libraries; foreign translators cut scenes with Magnus and Alec in them; once I was standing in the middle of the street about to get into a car to take me to a school where I was going to do a talk about my books when my publicist came up and said we were no longer invited: the school had read about Magnus and Alec and they didn’t want me there. Or often, if I was at a school, I’d be asked not to talk about Magnus and Alec while speaking to the students.


I tried to walk a careful line, including Magnus and Alec (and later, Aline and Helen) as significant and meaningful characters, but still managing to keep schools, libraries, and reading groups from throwing the books out or locking them up where the kids who most needed to read them wouldn’t be able to access them at all.


I held onto the hope that attitudes would continue to shift, to allow for more freedom to write characters who accurately represent the population of the world we live in (and represent my own friends and family, on whom Alec and Helen specifically are based). Hope that I’d be able to expand roles for characters like Magnus and Alec, and over the past twelve years — partly as I’ve carved out my career in a way where I can take the sales hits that sometimes result from major LGBT+ inclusion, and partly because of so many brave writers, readers, editors and publishers who’ve pushed for change — I’ve been able to do so more and more. 


When I was writing CoFA, I purposefully left a gap where Magnus and Alec go on vacation, with the idea that someday I could go back and fill in that gap with a story focused on them. For a long time that wasn’t something that companies wanted to buy and publish. I could have self-published the series, but I wanted the books on the shelves in stores, on the “bestsellers” rack with every other book I’ve written, making a statement about how much people want this kind of book and these kind of characters. I chose to write the story now when I did because Simon and Schuster, my publisher, opened Saga Press, an imprint dedicated to expanding what you can do in YA and cross-publishing with adult fantasy/sci fi. It’s Saga that will be publishing The Eldest Curses.

I thought a lot about what to say here because of two things: one, that people don’t like to hear about pushback against writing non-straight characters — it’s depressing (it is), it seems distant, unreal, how can these old systems and thought processes still exist? We’ve had successful books with gay characters in them! We’re done, right? I guess all I can say is that I think there’s a value to illuminating the pushback because it underlines how important it is to keep supporting books with LGBT+ characters because we are not there yet; we’re not where those books are give the same budgets and marketing and push as books with straight casts, and it takes the support of readers and reviewers and bookstore and library buyers to get us there.

I’d also say that I know I’ll get criticism for saying I was careful in my portrayal of Magnus and Alec until I felt like I’d gotten to a place where even if the fact that they were in love, lived together, even had sex was shown or even just implied (as it is in CoFA) it wouldn’t mean the books were locked up in libraries and slapped with warning labels. I guess I can only say it’s hard to navigate a situation where you fear the very kids who need to read about Magnus and Alec won’t be able to. When you meet kids who say “This book saved my life” so many times, and you think “But what if you couldn’t get to it? What if your school wouldn’t carry it, or your library, or your Walmart, which in small towns is sometimes literally the only source of books?) I accept that criticism. We all face hard choices in life and we make complicated decisions we think are for the best, and being criticized for those decisions is part of living and learning.

I guess the only other thing I’d say is whatever shitty things were said to me over the years about Magnus and Alec, they pale in comparison to the shitty things said to writers like Malinda Lo and Scott Tracey who were writing their own lives and experiences in the form of LGB characters on the page — and as Malinda says, their pain at confronting homophobia/biphobia will always be more visceral and personal than mine.

If you go out and buy The Lost Book of the White of course I’ll be thrilled, and a lot of that will be because it’s a way to show publishers that this kind of media and these protagonists are wanted and desired by readers. But I’d be just as thrilled if you picked up any fantasy by an LGB+ writer with LBG+ characters in it. There’s a ton of wonderful stuff and I hope you’ll explore it.

I am a nurse. When I was in nursing school, I loved my rotation through ICU and wanted nothing more than to be an ICU nurse, because I eventually wanted to become a nurse anesthetist (ICU experience is required for anesthesia school). My first job after graduation was not in ICU, but after 10 months as a nurse, I was offered a position in a Multi-system ICU. It was a training program for new nurses and I was told I would get 16 weeks of training. Fantastic! I was so excited! Then right before I started, I was told, oops, no, you actually only get 6 weeks of training. Um, okay, kind of concerned that that’s not enough time, but I’m going to try my best. I was somewhat apprehensive, but still excited. Until I met my preceptor.

This girl was undoubtedly intelligent and knew her job, but she was so mean to me that I was regularly having near-panic attacks in the few weeks I worked there. She would send huge emails to the educator about how much I sucked, and would ream me out in front of other staff and patients (one time one of the other nurses had to intervene). The other girl who started the program at the same time as me even said how awful my preceptor was being to me. She was also arrogant as fuck, and always bragged about shit, like how her fiancé (who was a practicing nurse anesthetist and made a lot of money) paid all this money for her engagement ring, and paid all this money for his surprise proposal, and how once they were married and had kids if she wanted a thousand dollar baby stroller, that’s what he was going to buy her, and how her wedding was going to be so big and fancy and expensive and perfect. And she was one of those people who was “super Christian,” and was fake nice and passive aggressive when talking to you that it starts to make you wonder if you’re crazy for seeing the vile in them. I hated her with the fire of a thousand burning suns.

PLANNING YOUR WEEK

Start early!

  • Planning your week should start Saturday night. The week officially begins on Sunday, and Saturday night is the day to figure out everything that will be happening. By doing this, you do not have to spend meaningless time on the Sunday which commences your week with tasks such as planning. Everything should already be planned.

Find out what is on your plate for the upcoming week

  • Look at your school’s portal, or the syllabus, whatever your instructors use to inform you of tests, quizzes, essays and other assessments. Write down what is coming up this week!!! Know everything there is to know about what will be on your plate.

Use color

  • Color is an extremely effective categorization tool. It can allow you to distinguish between tests, quizzes, essays, homework assignments, extracurricular activities, health, personal activities, and more. Assign a color to each subsection of your plan, and create a key so you’re aware of what’s happening. Stay true to this color key, and don’t stray from it.

Prioritize

  • Your plan should feature the most important things to complete and the least important. However, your plan should also establish a general understanding of the ranking system these assignments fall under. If you have a very important test coming up which will count for a large portion of your grade, it should be featured earlier in and stressed more clearly in your plan. Utilize highlighters to clarify the importance level of different assignments.

Make time parameters

  • Making a plan is very important, but assigning time blocks to the plan is arguably even more important. Consider what you do every day after school. Think about how much you do after every day, and at what times you will be doing homework. Consider the length of time it takes to complete each assignment. Then, assign time blocks to each assignment. For example, you could assign “English Essay” for 4 pm - 6 pm, then “Break” from 6 pm - 6:30 pm, then “Math Worksheet” from 6:30 pm - 8 pm. This will keep you on track and going to sleep at a reasonable time.

Leave time for fun

  • It cannot be all school all the time - it is not healthy or conducive to effective living. Leave time for fun and breaks. This can manifest in reading a nice book in between assignments, or planning a hangout session with friends during the week. You only get one childhood, and you can NOT spend the entirety of it in academic mania.

Feature your extracurriculars and appointments

  • When you plan out everything, you have to include e v e r y t h i n g. This means that you must feature any meetings you have for extracurricular commitments, doctors appointments, personal appointments and more. This will ensure your plan is truly accurate.

Make copies!!!

  • Put your plan EVERYWHERE. There should be a copy in your planner, a copy in your bullet journal (if you have one), a copy on your desk, a copy on your mirror, and more. Put the plan anywhere you look often, and anywhere it won’t be drowned by other things.

U S E I T

  • Do not ignore the plan, now that you’ve spent all this time making it. Put it to good use! Keep it with you. Love it, learn it, and make it again next Saturday.

• johnny is really good at hiding his emotions. he’s also a brave little shit who can get real sassy sometimes. yes, he is meek and shy, but when he feels the need he can be tough.

• steve is still in school. repeat after me, stEVE IS STILL IN SCHOOL AND ONLY WORKS PART TIME.

• the guys only watch their swearing and behavior around cousin-type girls. if your character is a new friend of pony’s who’s coming over for the first time, the gang isn’t gonna be super-duper nice to her and accept her 100%. they will probabaly be jerk-faces for a lil while, then chill out after she proves herself.

• two-bit wanted to drive to texas to look for ponyboy and johnny.

• darry goes skiing with his friends sometimes and was voted boy of the year. he was a popular, fun guy before he became the dad figure in the curtis household. yeah, he’s hella mature and dad-like now, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to have fun.

• johnny was a good man in a rumble. i repeat : JOHNNY WAS A GOOD MAN IN A RUMBLE. HE COULD KICK ASS, OKAY.

• in the book, ponyboy kicked soc ass during the rumble. he is young and emotional, but he isn’t helpless. i personally hated the way the movie depicted him during the rumble; just letting the socs beat him up and crying out for darry the minute it begins. if you read the rumble excerpt, he obviously isn’t the best fighter but he can defend himself pretty well and can take a punch.

• johnny can take a whipping with a 2 by 4 without letting out a whimper. he isn’t gonna be on the floor unconscious after a punch to the gut, please and thank you.

• cherry is afraid of dissapointing her parents if they see her hanging with pony. i personally believe that cherry overcomes that fear and apologizes to ponyboy after ignoring him at school, and they become good friends. but the only true reason she doesn’t want to be seen with ponyboy is because of her parents. we see she clearly doesn’t really care about half of her “friends” or what she’s supposed to do as a soc (beer blasts and river bottom parties), so why would she care if her other friends saw her with pony?

You can use a color code to track your tasks by theme or by subject so you can understand what your workload will be for the next few days. I really like this app’s simple layout and the fact that you can chose between different views, namely between a daily view or a three-days view. It also lets you set an alarm to remind you that your tasks and events are coming up. Other similar apps to consider are Google Calendar and Evernote.

Duolingo is an app that lets you learn languages through an array of mini games and exercises that you can complete daily, increasing your fluency and mastery step by step. Each language comes with dozens of different themed levels that teach you different aspects of vocabulary and grammar so you can build up your knowledge on that language. Each level recycles what you’ve learned in past levels to make sure that you still remember that you have learned before. You can also use the training icon to get a personalized lesson with your weakest words, so you can really tackle whatever you are having a difficult time with, before moving on with the learning process. I also enjoy the fact that the levels are short and you aren’t required to speak or listen, so it’s the perfect way to spend some idle time during commuting to school.

Another app that I always talk about is Forest, and for me it’s the best way to use the Pomodoro Technique whilst having a true visual experience of your productivity levels. The concept is quite simple: for each block of time you spend studying, you plant a virtual tree. While that tree grows, you cannot use other app in your phone, less you get distracted. When the timer reaches zero, you will have planted a tree in your forest. The more trees you have, the more productive you were during that day.

Habits is an habit tracker app that lets you follow up on those small daily tasks that we sometimes forget, like drinking enough water, taking medication or taking a walk outside. It’s very simple to use – all you have to do is insert which tasks you want to track and just press the small cross to mark it for that day. As time goes by, you will build a graphic that tells you how many times you’ve forgotten certain tasks and where you should improve. I usually do this by hand in my bullet journal but I think that tracking your habits with an app should please everyone who prefers to manage their time with their phone and doesn’t like to carry a notebook around.

Still on the time management theme, I think that everyone should try at least once in their life to really understand how they are spending their time. A time wheel lets you do this – you basically input how you have been spending your time during the day, with transportation, sleeping, eating, studying and taking classes and you will be baffled by how little time you can actually spend at your own will. This app lets you do exactly this, you just insert the amount of time you have been doing something and it will build a time wheel for you, so you can reflect where you have been wasting your time and re-organize your schedule. I think this is a great challenge to keep up with during a week and just reflect on how you are actually living your life. Basically, it sets a tracking time and when you unlock your phone, the app will ask you what you have been doing for the past fifteen minutes so you can build your time wheel gradually during the day without even noticing it.

A great app to save paper, ink and time is quizlet. It basically replaces all of your physical flash cards and lets you keep entire sets of questions and answers in your phone under your personal account. You can then export these to your computer and share them with your friends. I think this is an amazing app for anyone who relies on definition based classes and tests and is something great to use on idle times or when you need to study but only have your phone around. It has tons of different ways to test your knowledge on a subject and it can even read your cards out loud as if you were being questioned by your professor.

Finally, and this is one of my favorites, there is a widget timetable app so you can place your school timetable in your homescreen and never skip a class again. I usually never know where I am going to have class and sometimes it’s not really useful to take out your planner and look at your schedule so having it right on your homescreen is really useful.

You can insert all data related to your class in this widget, like the name of the class, the location, participants and total duration. You can always assign a color to a certain class. Afterwards, you just tap the screen to assign your class to a certain timeblock and there you have it.

ADHD & "out of sight, out of mind" relationships

Is it weird that it’s hard for me to maintain personal relationships if I don’t physically see them all the time? Like I love my parents and my sister, but I never really *miss* them. I only get homesick when I’m about to leave, but once I’ve adjusted to being at school I’m totally fine. I can go months w/o contacting HS friends and weeks w/o seeing my college friends or even my bf during the semester. I rarely if ever get the urge to reach out. I just don’t think about them, which sounds super callous, but I definitely do care? But it’ll be like 2 weeks since I’ve seen someone who lives a building away or a month since I’ve called my mom and they’ll text me like ‘I miss you!’ and I…don’t? I don’t feel compelled to seek out their company and sometimes I don’t even reply to messages because I don’t have the mental energy to hold an interaction with them. It’s like I pause all my friendships to come back to later, except real life isn’t Netflix and people won’t hold your place if you don’t actually put in the work. I can feel my high school friends drifting apart but I still don’t feel interested in their lives away until we’re back together in person and it feels just the same as always. I don’t realize it’s weird how little I talk to my parents  (who I love very, very much and have a great relationship w) until someone’s like “lol my mom calls at least every other day” and I realize that my mom’s expectations from me are “maybe a few emojis every month”. My boyfriend sometimes complains that he’s never been the one in the relationship to be nagging for a text back. If I’m at college, I don’t miss home, and if I’m at home, I don’t miss my friends from college. 

Is this an ADHD thing? I don’t know what’s wrong with me but I hate that I feel this way. I feel so shallow and self-centered because I struggle to maintain attachments whenever there’s physical distance. I saw this one random blogger make a personal post about this same exact thing, wondering if it was a facet of her ADHD, and now I’m wondering if it’s a facet of mine, too. It’s like I lack “emotional object permanence”, like if I can’t see the relationship it’s not right in front of me. I’ve only just been noticing this because I’m in college, but back in high school I rarely hung out with my friends outside of school and only sporadically had contact over breaks. I didn’t think that was weird but now I’m thinking it kind of is.

Anyway, I was going to look up attachment styles for you because it sounds like you have both the typical ADHD out of sight out of mind thing like you say, but also it sounds like your attachment style is a bit out of whack. You can read up on it via the link from this post. There are ways to mitigate some of the challenges associated with an off-kilter attachment style, and counselling is a good way to work through that process.

Studying from a Textbook :: How to Get Started

Through trial and error across my academic career, I’ve developed a system of textbook studying that’s been very successful for me even in graduate school. This post outlines my basic procedure. Of course, different techniques work for different people, so be sure to pick and choose which ideas you add to your own strategies. Thanks in advance for reading!

Reading a textbook is a formidable task; after all, they contain a lot of information per page across a lot of pages. Therefore, it’s useful to divide the book into more manageable pieces. Most textbooks do a pretty good job of this by pre-dividing the material into sections (or even subsections). If there’s no pre-existing division (or if each division is fairly lengthy), I recommend focusing on about 10 pages at a time. However you choose to divide, my basic strategy amounts to this:

Tackle the textbook section-by-section, only moving onto a new section once you’re comfortable with the previous section.

If you’re under a time constraint, then I’d say make yourself as comfortable as you can within that constraint.

This begs the question: how do you become comfortable with a section? Well, you’ll need to read it more than once. Today I’m primarily discussing how to make your first reading as useful as possible, especially for future readings.

First off, I suggest reading through the section in its entirety on your first pass. There will be material you don’t understand, but that’s okay: spend a couple of minutes trying to understand it and then move on. During your first reading, you’re getting the lay of the land; you don’t have to understand everything perfectly (or even at all).

Along the way, I keep track of my understanding via sticky notes, flags, and index cards.

My Index Cards Strategy

I keep three types of index cards as I read, each with its own theme:

  1. Questions: This index card lists questions I think of while reading, usually organized by the page number on which I have the question. Questions include things like “What’s [specific terminology] mean?”,  or “Is this related to [some other topic]?”, or even as generic as “What is [this subsection] talking about?”
  2. Definitions: When a new word is introduced, I write it down on my definitions card. Beside each word I draw a bubble in one of three colors, with each color representing my current understanding of the word and related concepts: green means “fine as is”, orange means “could use attention”, and red means “absolutely needs attention.”
  3. Notations: Some textbooks use abbreviations or symbols that I don’t recognize, so I keep an index card of these notations for quick reference.

You can easily replace this system’s index cards with notebook pages or similar media. Whatever works best for you!

My Sticky Notes and Flags Strategy

Using sticky notes placed within the textbook, I summarize challenging paragraphs and recap important ideas. This process forces me to grapple with the text, ultimately resulting in nice one-sentence summaries. These summaries help concepts stick in my brain and are extremely useful on subsequent reads of the text. I also use sticky notes to write questions that I couldn’t fit on my questions card. For the most difficult passages, I use flags: a quick, wordless way of saying “What in the world is this author talking about???”

Post-Reading Analysis and Subsequent Reading

I love this system because it not only lets me know how I feel about the material, but also generates specific concrete tasks to better my understanding. The vague task that is “learn this subject” becomes the more manageable tasks of “answer these questions”, “learn these words”, and “summarize these topics.”

I try to do the first reading in a single study session (although it’s not imperative to do so). Then, in a separate study session, I look up topics and words that I struggled with. The internet is particularly useful for this! Once I’ve improved my understanding some, I begin reading through the section again, this time with a fine-toothed comb. I use the notes I made the first time as guidelines for where I should spend my time and energy.

It’s very likely that during my second (and subsequent) reads I’ll think of new questions or come up with new ways of recapping material; in that case, I record them just as I did during the first reading.

In this way, I keep revisiting material I don’t understand until I feel like I understand it; again, external resources can be very useful for this! I only consider the section completed once I have a solid understanding of the section’s terminology and big ideas. Chances are I’ll still have questions at that point, but that’s okay:

I aim to be comfortable with the material, which is not the same as understanding 100% of what’s written in the textbook.

So, yeah! That’s my method in a nutshell. I hope you find parts of it useful in your own studies!

To All the Students in School

I think this really needs to be said to all the high schoolers freaking out about AP exams, SAT scores, and ACT scores. Hell, even to those who are applying/applied to colleges or other things. The number that you end up reading off the collegeboard site does not determine your worth. The number that you end up reading off the collegeboard site does not determine how smart you are. The number that you end up reading off the collegeboard site does not determine your future. Only you, as a person, can determine that. I know it’s hard, I’m still in high school too. But I think you guys need to, have to, know that even if you get all A’s and a 1450+ (or 2200+) on the SAT that it doesn’t automatically guarantee you a job. You could end up going to Stanford, MIT, or Harvard but end up in a bad place. The school you end up going to doesn’t necessarily grant you a job either. Okay, yes, it makes it a little bit easier but either way, you’re going to have to work hard for everything to get where you want. All of you are so much more important than some score or letter grade. Y’all are gonna do great, as long as you have the passion and drive to work for it. Having straight A’s and perfect scores does not mean you will survive in the real world. Now, this isn’t a way to make you feel better or myself (since I’m not a straight A student either) about all of this because honestly it’s all so true.

Good luck on your AP exams and everything else though. :) You guys got this.

Why Medical School Is Important

This week, I learned a lesson about why medical school is so important. For 4 years, we cram everything into our heads, a little about every specialty. In the end, we all just can’t wait to specialize in our own fields and not have to remember the majority of other stuff we memorized. We can always just consult someone else if we need help right? Well… What if you didn’t recognize the underlying problem in the first place?

This week on neurology, we had a 27 year old woman who was admitted overnight for severe headache. They ended up doing a brain MRI, which showed several small diffusion weighted defects in the posterior brain consistent with strokes. We were asked to see her in the morning for evaluation of “strokes”. I was asked to read her chart and go see her. I thought it was a little odd that a healthy 27 year old had strokes, but you never know. I start reading up and see that her systolic blood pressure has been above 160 all night. They were allowing some degree of permissive hypertension for her strokes. Her creatinine was 1.4. They also assumed this was because of her elevated blood pressures. Finally, there was protein in her urine. I keep reading and notice she is 4 days postpartum. I haven’t even seen the patient yet and put the pieces together in my head. Elevated blood pressure, severe headache with visual scotomas, elevated creatinine, protein in the urine, postpartum… Holy shit, this person has preeclampsia with severe features and needs to be started on a magnesium drip immediately!

I want to go into Ob/Gyn, so naturally I was a little excited that I recognized this. I immediately went to my 70 year old attending and told him this. He looked surprised, and I could tell he probably hadn’t thought about this disease in decades since usually they are admitted to ob/gyn and not neurology. He asked me to call the ob/gyn that was on. Within a few hours, she was seen and started on a magnesium drip for preeclampsia with severe features. My attending and I went to radiology and had them re-read the scan. She had PRES not strokes. This woman could have gone home on aspirin, an anti-hypertensive, and a statin with neurology follow-up and had a seizure a day later from full blown eclampsia.

In the end, I learned about how one person going down the rabbit hole of one diagnosis can lead to a series of several providers going down it as well. It was a shining moment for me as a medical student, not going to lie. But it also showed me the importance of being well read and not shutting out my mind to other specialties. We all need to know a little about everything and when to realize our limits and consult someone else. And a lot of the time, medical school is the only immersive experience we will get in many of these specialties. It matters more than just learning for the sake of the shelves.

Marawi was attacked by the Maute group. They raised the ISIS flag, supporting the infamous terrorist group. Theyve burned down homes, schools and hospitals, took people from their homes and killed those in their way. I also heard that if a person cannot prove theyre muslim, they are ‘taken care’’ of.

I am saddened when incidents like this happen to other countries. Now that it is happening to a city in my country, I cannot help but feel helpless and sad and terrified. We live in the same country but I cannot do anything. I can only tweet, post or share information about what’s happening.

I am Christian, and I believe that Muslims are not responsible for this. Murderers are murderers. Religion is not the problem!!! The moral compass is dictated by the conscience of an individual.

Studying any language is difficult. But here are a few of my top tips:

1. Find a good online dictionary that you can trust. My favourite is Spanishdict.

2. Listen to music in the target language. I listen to loads of Spanish music and I love it. If any one wants me to do a post on Spanish music then let me know. I’d be happy to!

3. Buy your favourite books/ books you want to read in the target language. Read it as if you would a normal book but each time you have to look up a word write it down in the margin of the book. Always reread a chapter.

4. Think in the language. Its often really hard to find someone to practise with you but by just trying to think in the language you are revising. So next time you are washing the dishes start thinking about your future goals but in the language.

5. Work abroad. I’ve done this twice now. I went to work in Spain as an Au Pair (I can also do a post on this if you want.) I learnt loads of colloquial Spanish. I also volunteered as a teaching assistant in the younger years when I was at school.

6. When you buy something new, check the label or the side of the box, bag etc to see if it has instructions or information in your target language. Read that first then only if you have to read it in your mother tongue.

7. Turn a notebook into your own personal dictionary. Every new word you learn right it in here then each week test yourself on a new page.

8. Watch films and tv shows in the language. Let me know if anyone wants any Spanish recommendation.

9. Don’t just learn the language, learn the culture and the history. Grab a book on the history of the country that speaks your target language and learn. The more you know and that!

10. Never give up. Put the grammar book down for a day or two and sulk about how hard it is and that you will never be fluent, but just never give up. If you do, you waste all the effort you’ve already put in!

Latin time

Guys, since I have an idea in my mind, I’m searching for a certain picture (I’ll find it XD), and in the meanwhile, I found this page from ch. 73:

I have noticed only now that Sebastian is reading a Latin poem here. So, I curiously searched for it (also because I studied Latin at high school. Yes, in Italy we still study Latin XD). Well, this excerpt: “ Sunt aliquid Manes: letum non omnia finit, luridaque euictos effugit umbra rogos. Cynthia namque meo uisa est incumbere fulcro, murmur ad extremae nuper humata uiae” is the part that Sebastian read (sorry but I can’t help myself imagining Ono-san reading this XDD)… anyway, this is from Propertius’ “Elegiae”, a collections of love poems, mostly dedicated to Cynthia. This is the seventh elegia from the fourth book, in which the woman is dead, she appears in a dream and re-assures her beloved that their love is everlasting, even in the Underworld. Now, apart from the love side, the part that is interesting is the first one of the sentence: “Sunt aliquid Manes: letum non omnia finit, luridaque euictos effugit umbra rogos”. I don’t know how many of you know Latin, so I hope you would like to help me, but translation is like: “There is something in the spirits of dead people: not everything ends with death: a livid shadow won, escaped the fire”. Now, “rogos” is technically the pyre, and it can be intended like the ritual of burning the corpses, but considering that Yana-san always puts hints and foreshadowings in un, this sentence looked so interesting from the 2CT point of view. The first part seems a reference to the Bizarre Dolls (not everything ends with death), but the second part (a livid shadow won, escaped the fire)… well, what if this is a hint of real!Ciel’s fate? :3 @abybweisse, @midnight-in-town (sweetheart, do you want to know a thing?  One of the first things I learned in my freshman year is the absolute need to study every single day. Even if there is no big test or assignment around the corner, reviewing your classes daily is the only way to make sure you are strengthening your knowledge on whatever you are learning, as well as filling in any gaps on unknown material that was lectured before. For weeks (and months) I was certain that people who told me I needed to study every day were just very unorganized people or were frightening me on purpose. However, if you are taking a course heavy in information like Law, you will quickly understand that it will be very difficult to remember every single detail that was lectured in multiple subjects, on the long run – and, in the end, you are also tested on the small details and not only on the big overall scheme of each class. If I could go back to my first semester, I would really push myself harder and organize my days to be able to review my previous classes.

Being a coffee hater throughout high school, I was always sure that I would never like the taste of it in my life. However, as soon as I got into my second year of college, I found out that the only way to survive a few of my classes was to drink an expresso beforehand. My addiction to coffee began as a need to survive. Now that I look back, my first year in college probably would have turned out better if I had more energy in class and while doing my assignments. However, I still try my hardest to never drink more than one cup a day – that really keeps my energy levels up, without creating addiction.

One of the things no one told me before going to Law School was the ridiculous amount of money I would spend on textbooks every single semester. Each one of my classes requires one or two mandatory textbooks, plus statute law and a bunch of optional readings that most of the time you end up buying because they are nowhere to be found in the library. Also, since Law is constantly being developed and changed, buying second hand books is not the best idea - most of the legal references in those books are probably outdated.
I remember that in my first year of Law School I refused to buy most of the textbooks the professors required me to, and I tried my hardest to study only with my class notes. Well, guess what? That ended up, as expected, in poor grades. The problem with Law is that 50% of our grade is the result of how hard we work at home. In class the professor doesn’t lecture ALL of the material we need to learn; they just summarize it as best as they can and highlight a few important things that they find relevant. However, in the final exam, all those details and footnotes in the textbooks will prove really useful to solve the cases and if you didn’t invest in your textbooks in the beginning of your term, you will not be able to use that information in your answers, which really harms your grade.

That takes me to the next point. For me, the best learning method is preparing all classes beforehand, be it lectures or discussion based classes. I only realized this in the end of my second year in college - and I think it makes a huge difference in your overall performance in class; if your professor uses the Socratic method to teach, preparing your classes thoroughly beforehand is absolutely essential! 

Basically, if you anticipate most of what is going to be taught in your class, you will have most of the work done for that specific group of topics or information. By taking your own notes to class and completing them with what the information that the professor adds during the lecture, you will be able to reinforce your knowledge on the subject, finishing any incomplete arguments that you have written down and also letting you participate in class, asking questions on the thematic you’ve studied and discussing it with your professor and classmates. Also, preparing classes beforehand will let you organize your time better, scheduling a certain time to prepare a certain topic and/or chapter.

Unfortunately, I found it almost impossible to prepare classes and do all of this homework while I was handwriting my notes. If I could turn back in time and change something during my time in college, I would certainly stop spending so much time making everything pretty and would start typing it all. I am a big fan of handwriting notes - I love pens, stationery and also the handwriting part in itself. However, when I started getting an excessive workload, insisting on handwriting all of my preparatory notes, completing them in class and also solve and summarize case law by hand was hurting my grades, my social life and my stress levels (and my hand, lol). I then had to make the hard decision to give up on all of my pretty stationery and start bringing my laptop to class.

I still handwrite a few notes, especially when I use the column method (which you can find more about here), but I am actually happy now that I have made the change – I can be much more productive and organized while saving a huge amount of time for all the other things I enjoy doing.

Finally, and I think this is the most important piece of advice I can give you: some people enter college with a very specific mind-set on what they want to do with their lives. While you are reading this, there is a huge possibility that you have already thought about a certain career; maybe you are picking only the classes that you think will help down that career path, as well.

However, never ignore all the other options that will be laid out for you. I can personally speak about my own experience: when I entered Law School back when I was 18 (I am now 21), I had a very specific idea of what I wanted to accomplish after I graduated - I was sure I wanted to be a judge. As soon as I got into my second year and started studying the most basic principles of contract law, I was 100% sure that I had actually changed my mind, and that it was imperative to purse contract law. Then, in my 5th semester, I started studying Tax Law - I still remember thinking that Tax Law was it and I was then decided to pursue it for my master’s degree; but then, I was able to get an internship in a law firm, in the Intellectual Property Law department; and you know what? I changed my mind again

So it’s perfectly normal to change your mind along the way; you are not less worthy of college just because you are still not sure of what you want to do career wise. Also, changing majors is fine - it’s just a sign that you are progressing as a human being and as a student, that you were willing to embrace new opportunities and give up on something that would not make you happy. Just make sure that you do your research beforehand on different career paths and use all the opportunities that college gives you in order to learn new things and meet new people. Internships, and other short-termed opportunities like job-shadowing programs are great ways to understand if you fit in the specific area you are thinking of pursuing or if, in real life, it has nothing to do with you.

It only occurs to him that he has a new neighbour when he wakes to the sound of a distinctly feminine voice cursing out someone.

And it’s not like Murphy was ever quiet or a remotely considerate neighbour or anything, but Bellamy’s pretty sure that he’s never woken him up at six in the morning with his yelling. Huffing, he shrugs on a shirt, shuffles over to the kitchen to make himself a cup of coffee. He has to be up in an hour for work anyway, so there’s no point in trying to go back to sleep.

He does, however, start feeling a little concerned when the muffled swearing grows progressively louder instead of abating. Maybe his new neighbour is actually hurt or something, and the increasingly profane swear words are her way of expressing her distress. It’s plausible, right? The nice, neighbourly thing to do would be to check up on her. Or at the very least, maybe pound on the wall and tell her, in no certain terms, to shut the fuck up.

As tempting as the latter option is, he finds himself edging out of the door anyway, crossing the hallway to knock at her door cautiously.

The door jerks open at the second knock, and he he has to hide his surprise at the figure standing by the doorway. She’s a lot tinier than he expected her to be, dressed in stained scrubs with her hair piled up into a messy bun, stray strands drifting over her collarbone distractingly.

She arches a brow over at him, the tilt of her chin challenging. “Yes?”

“Uh, hi. I live over at 5C? Just next to you?” He gestures over at his ajar apartment door, resisting the urge to make a snide remark about how thin the walls are in the complex. “And you just— I don’t know what’s happening, but you’ve been yelling for the past hour or so? I just wanted to make sure you’re not being murdered, like, five feet away from me.”

The first time Andrew sees Neil, Andrew is eight and Neil is a strange man handing him a bag of Skittles at the bus stop before school.

“I’m not supposed to take candy from strangers,” Andrew says.

“Yeah, but strangers aren’t the problem, are they?” the man says.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The man stares at him, and then, abruptly, he looks away. Andrew knows about that kind of looking away. It’s the kind adults do when they see Paul dragging him by the wrist, or when Andrew shows up at school with a black eye and an attitude problem.

But then the man looks back.
