but here it better get a million notes

Also, while talking about the situation with Pence and Hamilton right now, please keep in mind that it was a recipe for disaster from the start…..and that was more than likely intentional.

The danger of Trump’s camp from the start has lain in people equating ‘over the top’ with ‘stupid’. They are anything but stupid. Every move they’ve made has been calculated, and I don’t doubt this was any different. There is no way, in the face of all the protests and sentiments expressed towards Trump and Pence since the election, that it didn’t occur to anyone that Pence going and seeing Hamilton of all things, would likely cause an uproar.

And what else happened yesterday of significance? Trump settled the lawsuit for fraud against Trump University….for over double what it was expected to settle for. Our president elect essentially admitted to defrauding people via Trump U, and paid $25 million dollars to settle it. This is utterly unprecedented. Also of note in the last couple of days was that the Trump hotel in DC held an event for foreign diplomats, in which it was made plain to them what benefits might come from diplomats making use of the Trump hotel when visiting DC. After all, what better way to ingratiate yourself with the US President you’re here to see, than to be able to say ‘oh I stayed at your lovely hotel?’ And what worse way to get off on the wrong foot than by admitting you stayed at one of his competitors? This is but one more of the MANY conflicts of interest at work with Trump’s presidency.

But Pence goes to see Hamilton, and predictably enough, he gets heckled and booed and that’s the story of the day, and Trump’s tweeting about it, and everyone’s focused on Trump tweeting about it and Pence getting booed…..and suddenly nobody’s talking about the MASSIVE story that is a president elect settling a fraud lawsuit for 25 million dollars and enticing foreign diplomats to use his hotel to get in his good graces.

See how that works?

Heyyyy I need help... my grades are too low and the only condition of my scholarship is that my grades improve... any tips on how to get my sh*t together in school?

hi anon! honestly, not sure if i’m the best person to ask because i’m falling apart during finals season, but i’ll do my best.

1. i think one of the most important things when trying to do/improve anything is to really want it. you need to give yourself a reason to change things (like keeping your scholarship) so that there’s motivation for you to do so. i often do things by sheer power of will, so having that kind of goal and mindset is helpful.

2. break things up and set small, realistic goals. don’t be too hard on yourself, but you can’t be too easy either, or nothing will get done (see previous point about motivation) i think breaking things down is really important not only because it makes things seem easier, but also getting overwhelmed and shutting down is not what you want to happen. take it slow, but still push yourself a little.

3. make school a priority. it’s great to have fun with friends and let loose, but don’t do it so often that you can’t get things done. there’s only so much time in a day, so make trade offs. work hard today so you can go out tomorrow. also (just my two cents) have fun in a way that won’t put you out of commission to do things the next day/later on. don’t stay up until 3 every saturday so you can barely function the next day and can’t get anything done. maybe once in a while but not every weekend. (also applicable to getting super wasted and being very hungover the next day)

4. don’t give up. ok this is really cliche, but also really important. this connects to what i said about making small goals, but getting super overwhelmed and just giving up is not the way to go. believe me i’ve been there. take a little time off, calm down, cry if you need to, but get back up and tell yourself you can do it.

also, here are some smaller, less philosophical tips (also i’m sorry i ramble so much)

1. don’t study/do work in a depressing location. personally, i have to have windows near me - artificial lighting just doesn’t cut it.

2. use color/your favorite pen. not saying your notes have to be pretty, but sometimes just writing in a fun pen you like makes things better.

3. have everything you need at arms reach. books, headphones, snacks, drinks, whatever. getting up just gives you an excuse to get distracted.

i really hope this helps and i’m sorry for throwing a million words at you… maybe somewhere in there there’s helpful advice…

Special mentions to phancywork for convincing me to write an hp fic ^__^

Ngl, it did take me awhile to write this fic purely because I had no idea what I was going to write for it but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out so I really hope that you all enjoy reading it. Let me know what you think of it!

Helloo, have you ever thought about Lord of the Rings characters? Like the 9 in the Fellowship / whether races like elves, dwarves etc tend towards a particular Primary/Secondary / The Hobbit characters. Thanks! :)

Firstly, you should check out thetolkienhat, where some awesome people have created and collected a bunch of Tolkien sortings using this system. It’s really neat! And they all know this canon eight million times better than I do. Go say hi, sing their praises, contribute, etc.

I’ve read LotR a good few dozen times, but not in a few years. I’ll be working somewhat off movie canon here, though with that certainly shaded by a familiarity with and fondness for the text. Here’s our Hobbits, though! If I get inspired later, I’ll see if I can stick up the rest of the Fellowship, too.

Note: in the way we play this game, we use “primary” to mean WHY people do things and “secondary” to mean HOW.

Pippin - Hufflepuff primary/Gryffindor secondary - Heart of gold, a strong sense of duty and service, and a tendency to charge (or trip) into things.

Merry - Slytherin primary/Ravenclaw secondary - He’s possessive and loyal, and handles his problems with deliberate logic and intelligence. He has narrow focus on his allegiances where Hufflepuff Primary Pippin has a broad, non-exclusive affection for all; where Pippin charges, Merry can back him up (or yank him out of trouble) with a thought-out plan; and he’ll probably bring supplies, too.

Samwise - Slytherin primary/Hufflepuff secondary - We thought for a moment he was a Gryffindor, but we’re pretty sure all that is is that Frodo is his Most Important Person (and Morality Pet). Sam does some Big Loud Gryffindor Things but every one of them is for the sake of his Mr. Frodo, not the world, even if it does save it. He doesn’t talk about the cause, or evil, or duty— Sam crosses the world, fights orcs, and carries (and gives up) the Ring for, not the world, but for his Shire, his Gaffer, and his Mr. Frodo.

(No, let’s look at this again. Little hobbit Samwise Gamgee willing gives up the One Ring to Frodo, because in the end Frodo Baggins is more important to him than it could ever be. My Slytherin darling).

The Hufflepuff Secondary comes from the fact that Sam does not terribly engage with Ravenclaw’s planning and system building, Slytherin’s adaptability, or even Gryffindor’s charge (though he can resemble that last one fairly well) — one of his most stunning attributes will always be steadiness, sturdiness, and a willingness to buckle down and do hard work, whether it’s weeding or learning songs from Mr. Bilbo or carrying Frodo up Mt. Doom.

Frodo - Ravenclaw primary/Slytherin secondary - Frodo is very good at switching his path when things becomes irritating or difficult. He’s flexible and unattached to method— an adaptable Slytherin Secondary aimed towards quietly saving the world.

He’s certainly not a loyalty house— dropping Sam near Minas Morgul is easy; his leaving the Fellowship near the fords sounds most like an Idealist move, making decisions for the greater good. He’s not as linked to group as Hufflepuff Pippin, who mourns their disbanding. Of course his Slytherin Sam won’t let him abandon/save them entirely, but what else would you expect form the poor garden snake.

Author Notes: Um, so this is Chapter 4 of Retrievable but it honestly works better as a one shot. I hope no one is particularly bothered by me posting it on here.
Summary: A million times James Rhodes failed Tony Stark/A million times Rhodey saved Tones.

James is nearly seventeen and too young for college, but his scores are phenomenal and his mother is beyond proud. Getting away from the neighborhood kids, the ones who grew up scared of seeming too smart and expressed that with their fists, is a bonus. He likes MIT, likes being around people as smart or smarter than him, likes it enough to put up with the prissy pretentious white boys here on their daddy’s bank account.

Plus, he’s pretty sure he’s adjusting to MIT far better than the baby-faced pretty boy about to throw himself off the diving board into Phi Beta Epsilon’s empty pool. He’s been watching this kid all night, watched him drink twenty year olds twice his size under the table, watched him disappear into the house and come back out with a sheen of white dust on his upper lip. Just watched. Just like everybody else.

The kid dances slowly closer to the edge, egged on by the frat boys’ hooting and hollering, and James looks around to see if anybody else is going to step forward and stop him. The pool isn’t very deep, but this kid could seriously hurt himself. “Hey, man,” he calls, but its drowned out by the cheers.

Stark, Stark, Stark,” someone starts chanting, and the others pick up the call. James has heard of a Stark attending MIT, Howard Stark’s only son, some terrifying wunderkind of a party kid who drinks shots mixed with caffeine powder before all his tests and still manages to ruin the curve for everyone else.

Stark raises his shaking hands above his head in imitation of the world’s worst ballerina and tip toes to the edge of the board and James feels his throat close up even as he takes a step forward. “Hey, wait!” he yells, and Stark seems to, just for a moment, hear his yell, jerking towards the side of the pool James is on and losing his balance in the process, tipping off and over the edge.

I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend

Hey guys! This is the conclusion to Hey Little Girl that I’ve been sweating over for a long time.

This is very much thanks to the efforts of madfatty, who very rationally talks me through feeling weird about things until her conclusions are the only ones that make sense, and slitherouter, who would read a million words of this gleefully and is always trying to get me to write them. Honest to goodness, I would write half as much and a third as successfully if I didn’t have them. Thank you so much you two.

Previous parts are here: one, two, three.

She doesn’t go to his gig, but he tells himself it’s fine. It’s fine. It’s probably better anyway, gives him more time to stuff down his confusing feelings and tuck his crush away. The weekend without her hadn’t helped much. The store seems so full of her; her handwriting on a note at the counter, her favorite band playing overhead, her purple pen stuck in the clipboard he picked up. She’s worse than a ghost, because  ghosts don’t leave their sweaters on their chairs. And he hasn’t recently decided he fancies any ghosts, anyway.

But it’s fine. It’s fine. Even if it does hurt a little that she didn’t come. They’re friends right? It doesn’t matter that you shouldn’t spend your Friday evenings fantasizing about your friends. They are friends, and he happens to know that she’s a damn fine friend. She’s a friend who does things for the people she cares about, she shows up. So why won’t she show up for him? He’s her friend too, dammit.

Hi! I'm writing a story set in a fictional city and I want to make a map so I don't get to confused with the city's layout, but I don't know how. I've tried a couple times, but there is so much things to place that I never know where to start and everything gets very confusing, very fast. Any advice?

Here’s a few things I’d consider when building a city.

  • Terrain - mountains, lakes, rivers, ocean, desert, forest?
  • Climate - arid, temperate, arctic?
  • History - is this a new settlement or one that has been around for thousands of years?
  • Population - is it a small city of a few thousand or a world capital of a few million?

Once you get a general idea of those features, I’d suggest looking at real world cities to give you a better idea of how people have adapted to those constraints. Save pictures and take notes of what you see as you go along. Once you feel you have enough, grab a pen and paper and draw! There are no right or wrong answers here, so don’t be afraid to use your imagination. If you want something more interactive, there’s always Sim City ;)

Now if you want to read a book from a legendary (and controversial) architect and urban planner, read Le Corbusier’s City of Tomorrow and its Planning. He’ll certainly give you plenty to think about.

Good luck!

Do you have any pirate au ?

Yes, yes I do, but not as many as I had hoped. I mean I’ve read a lot of pirate AU fics (I’ve read all the AU fics!) but unfortunately most of those are not worth reccing at all, so I’m just going to make a list of my favorite ones. - Admin A

Ps. Here’s a link to our Merman Cas rec.

Title: Drop Anchor

Author: almaasi

Rating: Explicit

Words: 42,124 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: This is my all time favorite Destiel pirate au fic. I swear it was so well written that I could almost picture it as a movie in my head. I really wish there was a machine that would just transform fanfics into movies, I’d never leave my home!

Summary: AU. A sailor and an enemy pirate are marooned on an island together, and while awaiting rescue they accidentally achieve domestic bliss.

Or:

Dean Winchester is lieutenant of the Royal Trading Ship Echelon. On a pleasantly sunny but particularly catastrophic day, he is marooned on an island somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with only one man for company. That man is Castiel, captain of the black-sailed Leviathan: a pirate, no less. Given the circumstances under which they are stranded, rescue seems unlikely, and it could be aeons before a ship even comes by. The two of them may as well make the most of their own private island, personal differences be damned.

Title: The Pirate Who Loved Me

Author: darkphoenix2345

Rating: Mature

Words: 54,460 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: I really wanted to love this story but I have a huge problem with the drama. Sometimes I feel like (some) authors who don’t know how to write angst in a realistic and emotional way just slap on dramatic events to their story instead. Not saying that this author is bad or anything, I just got a very HS type of a vibe from this story with all that drama.

Summary: AU-Historical High Seas Adventure French mercenary Castiel Ulliel is blood thirsty to avenge his family’s death. That is why he kidnaps the infamous pirate, the Phoenix aka Dean Winchester as part of his plan for revenge. What he never imagined was falling for his captive.

Title: The Greatest Treasure

Author: anoradh

Rating: Mature

Words: 35,122 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: I loved Treasure Planet when I was younger, unfortunately the drama in this fic was a bit too much for me. I’d imagine that anyone who loves HS fics will love this because the angst is very similar :’D

Summary: An AU based on the Disney movie Treasure Planet, which in turn is based on R.L. Stevenson’s Treasure Island.

Ever since he was a little boy, Castiel has known that he is destined for adventure. When a dying man gives him a map to the fabled Treasure Planet, it seems that destiny is about to be fulfilled.

Title: A Pirate Head and a Pirate Heart

Author: thedropoutandthejunkie (elenajames)

Rating: Explicit

Words: 6,011 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: Not my favorite fic on this list but still worth reading since it’s only 6k words. (aka, I read this a million years ago and can’t remember shit about it :’D)

Summary: Treachery leaves Dean stranded on a desolate island, but those who would betray him will soon learn you never cross a Winchester.

Title: High Seas and Low Gods

Author: thecouchcarrot

Rating: Explicit

Words: 95,915 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: If you love adventure fics then this is a must-read for you! I’ve read this fic twice and it just gets better the more I read it, which is odd since the writing style and the plot are so not my usual style.

Summary:  Lucky Dean and Doc Samuel are infamous Caribbean pirates on the run from Poseidon - and oh yeah, Poseidon’s real and Castiel is working for him. Dean’s on to him, though… in more ways than one. Plagued by Greek curses, hidden agendas, mythical monsters and repressed sexuality, will the Winchesters ever make it back to England alive?

Title: Ocean Blues

Author: lentezon

Rating: Explicit

Words: 38,275 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: I’m not sure if I recced this before in the merman Cas list but who cares, it’s here again!

Summary: The crew is supposed to be merciless, and the ship’s captains on friendly terms with mermaids, some of the most dangerous creatures to dwell in the deep waters of the sea. They attack ships at will and leave no survivors, entire crews falling victim to their swords and the mermaids’ songs. But these are merely the stories, and Alfie Jones is about to find out the true background of The Impala—one that might well be even more unbelievable than the rumours.

Title: Escaping Neverland

Words: 28,542 – 3 Parts so far!

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: Peter Pan AU with Castiel as captain Hook. I loved the idea here but the fic kind of left me hoping for more. Still, a pretty good pirate AU (and there’s not that many of those)!

Summary: During the day, Dean and his lost boys (and gals) fight with captain Castiel and his pirates. But during the nights, on the days that Dean get caught, he warms the captains bed..

Admin A’s notes: Because this rec needs more oneshots incase you guys don’t have the patience to read the long-ass fics I have recced!

Summary: Castiel, the youngest son of Admiral Milton, dreams of adventure, but he knows he’s going to spend the rest of his days in utter boredom. Why do you believe that abortion should be illegal? I live in a country where it is and trust me, it only makes the problem worse. Girls here get back street abortions. My friend had her ribs broken in one. How is that better than a small number of women getting it done safely and legally by a medical professional? I'm pro choice because outlawing abortion brings worse consequences than legalising it. Note - pro choice, NOT pro abortion.

1. “Small number”: In America, 1.21 million children die from abortion every year. This makes abortion the leading cause of death in America, with more than double the death toll of heart disease at 597,689.

2. America never had the back-alley abortion problem that abortion activists claim we did. The ridiculous numbers of women dying each year from unsafe abortion – often put in the 10,000 range – were completely made up. Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a former abortionist and co-founder of NARAL who later became Pro-Life, says in his book Aborting America that he knew the numbers were completely fabricated the entire time. According to the CDC, in 1972 39 women died from illegal abortions, not thousands. 24 women died from legal abortions that same year. The biggest impact on abortion-related deaths in recent history has been the invention of antibiotics, not the legalization of abortion.

3. One death from abortion is too many, whether it’s the woman or the child. Over 42 million deaths of children alone per year worldwide is unspeakable.

What we need is support for pregnancy centers, OB/GYNs, and adoption agencies who help women facing difficult pregnancies and their children. We need education for women on all of the resources that are already available to them, as well as on contraception – not just that it’s out there, but what failure rates each method has and the health risks of hormonal methods (especially hormonal methods that can have abortifacient effects). For instance, how many women know about the Creighton model of natural family planning? Inexpensive, natural, no side effects, and has a 94.6% rate of effectiveness, compared to the 91% effectiveness rate of the pill, which has a whole host of side effects and risks.

We do not need abortion, legal or illegal.

Check out the Students for Life “What Has Roe Done for Us?” project, exposing the dangers of legal abortion and the myths about illegal abortion.
