but he's sacrificing himself so the girl he loves can get away

he’s the beauty; she’s the beast

so i’m sure the remake of a timeless classic that disney is about to roll out is going to be great and all

but here’s another way we could do things:

he’s the beauty

she’s the beast

for a movie who’s central theme is inner beauty, it doesn’t really do anything to support that, you know? so how about this: adam, our prince turned beast, isn’t an inhospitable monster. because this back story doesn’t make any sense – why is the young prince of this land alone, in a castle, only to be caught unaware by a witch?

so how about this – this is pseudo france, right, so these royals do what their real life counterparts did. they flee. the cruel, greedy king and queen flee and leave their young son behind with their staff. their son who is kind and soft hearted and totally unfit to rule any kingdom (never mind that they’re literally running away from their own people). not only that – they trade their son for their freedom, trade their kingdom for their freedom. to the witch.

so the witch comes, and she doesn’t disguise herself as a crone, goes to him looking as lovely and young as her magic keeps her. but our prince adam has a talent, one many cast-aside, neglected children have developed – the ability to see people for who they really are, and he knows this is no kind young woman in need of his help. he refuses to let her in – and there’s this little twist to the magic, that she can only enter the palace grounds and claim her prize if she’s welcomed in a as a guest, and he, the young master of this castle, won’t let her in.

Internal Conflict:  Five Conflicting Traits of a Likable Hero.

1.  Flaws and Virtues

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but characters without flaws are boring.  This does not, as many unfortunate souls take it to mean, imply that good, kind, or benevolent characters are boring:  it just means that without any weaknesses for you to poke at, they tend to be bland-faced wish fulfillment on the part of the author, with a tendency to just sit there without contributing much to the plot.

For any character to be successful, they need to have a proportionate amount of flaws and virtues.

Let’s take a look at Stranger Things, for example, which is practically a smorgasbord of flawed, lovable sweethearts.

We have Joyce Byers, who is strung out and unstable, yet tirelessly works to save her son, even when all conventional logic says he’s dead;  We have Officer Hopper, who is drunken and occasionally callous, yet ultimately is responsible for saving the boy’s life;  We have Jonathan, who is introspective and loving, but occasionally a bit of a creeper, and Nancy, who is outwardly shallow but proves herself to be a strong and determined character.  Even Steve, who would conventionally be the popular jerk who gets his comeuppance, isn’t beyond redemption.

And of course, we have my beloved Eleven, who’s possibly the closest thing Stranger Things has to a “quintessential” heroine.  She’s the show’s most powerful character, as well as one of the most courageous.  However, she is also the show’s largest source of conflict, as it was her powers that released the Demogorgon to begin with.

Would Eleven be a better character if this had never happened?  Would Stranger Things be a better show?  No, because if this had never happened, Stranger Things wouldn’t even be a show.  Or if it was, it would just be about a bunch of cute kids sitting around and playing Dungeons and Dragons in a relatively peaceful town.

A character’s flaws and mistakes are intended to drive the plotline, and if they didn’t have them, there probably wouldn’t even be a plot.

So don’t be a mouth-breather:  give your good, kind characters some difficult qualities, and give your villains a few sympathetic ones.  Your work will thank you for it.

2.  Charisma and Vulnerability

Supernatural has its flaws, but likable leads are not one of them.  Fans will go to the grave defending their favorite character, consuming and producing more character-driven, fan-created content than most other TV shows’ followings put together.

So how do we inspire this kind of devotion with our own characters?  Well, for starters, let’s take a look at one of Supernatural’s most quintessentially well-liked characters:  Dean Winchester.

From the get-go, we see that Dean has charisma:  he’s confident, cocky, attractive, and skilled at what he does.  But these qualities could just as easily make him annoying and obnoxious if they weren’t counterbalanced with an equal dose of emotional vulnerability.

As the show progresses, we see that Dean cares deeply about the people around him, particularly his younger brother, to the point of sacrificing himself so that he can live.  He goes through long periods of physical and psychological anguish for his benefit (though by all means, don’t feel obligated to send your main character to Hell for forty years), and the aftermath is depicted in painful detail.

Moreover, in spite of his outward bravado, we learn he doesn’t particularly like himself, doesn’t consider himself worthy of happiness or a fulfilling life, and of course, we have the Single Man Tear™.

So yeah, make your characters beautiful, cocky, sex gods.  Give them swagger.  Just, y’know.  Hurt them in equal measure.  Torture them.  Give them insecurities.  Make them cry.

Just whatever you do, let them be openly bisexual.  Subtext is so last season.

3.  Goals For the Future and Regrets From the Past

Let’s take a look at Shadow Moon from American Gods.  (For now, I’ll have to be relegate myself to examples from the book, because I haven’t had the chance to watch the amazing looking TV show.)

Right off the bat, we learn that Shadow has done three years in prison for a crime he may or may not have actually committed.  (We learn later that he actually did commit the crime, but that it was only in response to being wronged by the true perpetrators.)

He’s still suffering the consequences of his actions when we meet him, and arguably, for the most of the book:  because he’s in prison, his wife has an affair (I still maintain that Laura could have resisted the temptation to be adulterous if she felt like it, but that’s not the issue here) and is killed while mid-coital with his best friend.

Shadow is haunted by this for the rest of the book, to the point at which it bothers him more than the supernatural happenings surrounding him.

Even before that, the more we learn about Shadow’s past, the more we learn about the challenges he faced:  he was bullied as a child, considered to be “just a big, dumb guy” as an adult, and is still wrongfully pursued for crimes he was only circumstantially involved in.

But these difficulties make the reader empathize with Shadow, and care about what happens to him.  We root for Shadow as he tags along with the mysterious and alternatively peckish and charismatic Wednesday, and as he continuously pursues a means to permanently bring Laura back to life.

He has past traumas, present challenges, and at least one goal that propels him towards the future.  It also helps that he’s three-dimensional, well-written, and as of now, portrayed by an incredibly attractive actor.

Of course (SPOILER ALERT), Shadow never does succeed in fully resurrecting Laura, ultimately allowing her to rest instead, but that doesn’t make the resolution any less satisfying.

Which leads to my next example…

4.  Failure and Success

You remember in Zootopia, when Judy Hopps decides she wants to be cop and her family and town immediately and unanimously endorse her efforts?  Or hey, do you remember Harry Potter’s idyllic childhood with his kindhearted, adoptive family?  Oh!  Or in the X-Files, when Agent Mulder presents overwhelming evidence of extraterrestrial life in the first episode and is immediately given a promotion?  No?

Yeah, me neither.  And there’s a reason for this:  ff your hero gets what they want the entire time, it will be a boring, two-dimensional fantasy that no one will want to read.

A good story is not about the character getting what they want.  A good story is about the character’s efforts and their journey.  The destination they reach could be something far removed from what they originally thought they wanted, and could be no less (if not more so) satisfying because of it.

Let’s look at Toy Story 3, for example:  throughout the entire movie, Woody’s goal is to get his friends back to their longtime owner, Andy, so that they can accompany him to college.  He fails miserably.  None of his friends believe that Andy was trying to put them in the attic, insisting that his intent was to throw them away.  He is briefly separated from them as he is usurped by a cute little girl and his friends are left at a tyrannical daycare center, but with time and effort, they’re reunited, Woody is proven right, and things seem to be back on track.

Do his efforts pay off?  Yes – just not in the way he expected them to.  At the end of the movie, a college-bound Andy gives the toys away to a new owner who will play with them more than he will, and they say goodbye.  Is the payoff bittersweet?  Undoubtedly.  It made me cry like a little bitch in front of my young siblings.  But it’s also undoubtedly satisfying.

So let your characters struggle.  Let them fail.  And let them not always get what they want, so long as they get what they need.

5.  Loving and Being Loved by Others

Take a look back at this list, and all the characters on it:  a gaggle of small town kids and flawed adults, demon-busting underwear models, an ex-con and his dead wife, and a bunch of sentient toys.  What do they have in common?  Aside from the fact that they’re all well-loved heroes of their own stories, not much.

But one common element they all share is they all have people they care about, and in turn, have people who care about them.

This allows readers and viewers to empathize with them possibly more than any of the other qualities I’ve listed thus far, as none of it means anything without the simple demonstration of human connection.

Let’s take a look at everyone’s favorite caped crusader, for example:  Batman in the cartoons and the comics is an easy to love character, whereas in the most recent movies (excluding the splendid Lego Batman Movie), not so much.

Why is this?  In all adaptions, he’s the same mentally unstable, traumatized genius in a bat suit.  In all adaptions, he demonstrates all the qualities I listed before this:  he has flaws and virtues, charisma and vulnerability, regrets from the past and goals for the future, and usually proportionate amounts of failure and success.

What makes the animated and comic book version so much more attractive than his big screen counterpart is the fact that he does one thing right that all live action adaptions is that he has connections and emotional dependencies on other people.

He’s unabashed in caring for Alfred, Batgirl, and all the Robins, and yes, he extends compassion and sympathy to the villains as well, helping Harley Quinn to ultimately escape a toxic and abusive relationship, consoling Baby Doll, and staying with a child psychic with godlike powers until she died.

Cartoon Batman is not afraid to care about others.  He has a support network of people who care about him, and that’s his greatest strength.  The DC CU’s ever darker, grittier, and more isolated borderline sociopath is failing because he lacks these things.

And it’s also one of the reasons that the Lego Batman Movie remains so awesome.

God willing, I will be publishing fresh writing tips every week, so be sure to follow my blog and stay tuned for future advice and observations!

How to Make Your Villain Domestic but Still Evil

It’s the oxymoron that attracts us. Billowing black cape, terrifying worldviews, a willingness to make the streets run red with blood – and you know what would be hilarious? Them trying and failing to make morning pancakes. You know what would really hit us in the feels? Watching them show tenderness around a special someone.

Having a villain with a domestic side is lassoing a black hole, and it’s a tantalizing thing to watch. However, anyone who’s indulged in these daydreams with their own villains has probably encountered one very specific issue: it makes them less evil. They lose their edge.

For example, look at Crowley from CW’s Supernatural. This was a guy to be feared at one point; arriving out of nowhere at unexpected times, always playing both sides of the conflict, and you could be certain he would skin anyone necessary to get what he wanted – usually without getting a single drop of blood on his impeccable suit.

Flash forward to recent seasons, and we’ve seen Crowley cry and whimper more times than Dean has died –which is saying something. At first, it was fascinating to discover this powerful character actually had a tender side; and now, when Crowley makes a threat, we’re about as afraid as when any low-level demon makes one. This is because his evil was too compromised. He let himself go.

How can we avoid this mistake with our villains? The answer isn’t making them crush puppies and hate butterflies at every turn; it’s in balancing their core scariness with their softer side – giving them complexity, giving us a bit of “aww,” and making their eventual whiplash back into ‘terrifying’ all the more wonderful.

For this, we’re going to use Epic of Lilith by Ivars Ozols as an example. This book centers on arguably the original female villain – Lilith, the first woman of the Garden of Eden, who got on the “good guys’” bad side by refusing to submit to someone who was clearly her equal. There won’t be any spoilers below, but if you give the book a read (it’s an easy page turner), the points will be driven home stronger.

Plus it’s a book with a great female villain who isn’t objectified (don’t let the cover fool you, seriously) and prose that isn’t full of sexual over- or undertones. Talk about a win, eh?

Here we go.

Let Me Show You

Author’s Note: I don’t where this came from but I’ve had this scenario in my head for days and I just had to write it. Sorry if there are any typos. I just wrote this on my phone in fit of passion. Also, I just started watching Hemlock grove so idk if I captured Roman’s character as well as I wanted, but oh well. Forgive me.

Rating: mature

Warnings: smut for smut’s sake

You were frustrated. You weren’t even convinced the word “frustrated” really encompassed the rage you felt towards yourself at this particular moment. It’s been awhile since your hands were able to get you off the way they used to. Recently, every time you were in the mood and you let your fingers slip down to your most sensitive spots, you would end up completely unsatisfied. No amount of flicks, tugs, or circular motions were enough to get you to the peek that you were desperately aching for. So it’s not even a surprise that you find yourself, once again, on your back and on the verge of tears.

It was a warm Saturday afternoon and you had the house completely to yourself. You thought that today would finally be the day you could reach that sweet high you’ve been craving. There was nothing pressing on your mind, no distractions, but after two hours of scrolling through endless porn videos and conjuring up every fantasy you ever had, it was still utterly pointless. So as you lay completely bare on your bed, throwing a tantrum, you were suddenly jolted from your thoughts by the doorbell. So with a huff, you pull yourself together enough to drag yourself to your front door.

And there he was.

The human embodiment of the sexual frustrations that have been pent up inside you in the form of a 6’4 man with the face sculpted by the gods themselves.

“What do you want Roman?” You say completely irritated. He was the absolute last person you wanted to see right now, especially now that the unstoppable throbbing between your legs somehow intensified even more since you left your room.

“Well, someone’s clearly happy to see me.” Roman teased, the corner of his full lips tugged into the infamous smirk that made every female within a ten-mile radius swoon. He pushed past you, and into your living room. The smell of his expensive designer cologne filled your lungs causing your eyes to drop for a second before looking back at him. He was completely unaware of the effect he had on you, but he could tell there was something off about you. Your breathing was heavier than usual and you were wearing a silk robe in the middle of the afternoon.

“So, what were you up to before I got here?” Roman asked as he circled mindlessly around the couch. Any other time you would be completely thrilled that he had come to you to spend his free time. But today was not one of those days. “Look Roman if you just want to shoot the shit, we do that another time. I’m busy,” you said bluntly. Roman spun around on his heels. He wasn’t used to you acting so unwelcoming, usually, you were the first person he could go to if he just needed someone to listen to him. He stepped up to you, so close his chest was almost next to yours. He took one of his long fingers and grazed it gracefully across your cheek. His big green eyes looking down at you, as if he’s never truly looked at you before.

“You know you can tell me anything. I’ve trusted you with more than anyone should. Let me be here for you.” He whispered quietly. You never felt so embarrassed in your whole life. Roman was here for you, willing to be your confidant, and the only reason you kept barking at him was because you couldn’t get yourself off.

“Roman, please. I can’t talk to you about this” you told him, backing away from him. However, he was able to grab onto your arm and bring you back into his space. Once again locking eyes. “I said anything,” he repeated slowly. Not being able to handle the intensity of his gaze, you looked down and whispered something he wasn’t able to catch. He leaned down, his ear now closer to your lips. “Come again?”

“God Damn it, Roman! I can’t get myself off, ok!” You yell at him. He shakes his head and you notice that he’s chuckling. “Are you laughing at me? See this is why I shouldn’t tell you shit. Everything’s a joke to yo-“ you were cut off by a swift movement. Before you were able to follow him, Roman has your back pushed against his chest and he begins kissing your temple. “Let me show you” he whispered. “I can help.” He pushed your hair away from your neck, tracing the length of it with his fingers. “Please?” He begged. Having little self-restraint, and feeling tired of losing the endless battle with your body, you willingly accept his offers.

He takes your hand and leads you to your bedroom. Once there he kisses your hand before promising to return. You start pacing as you wait, wondering if this was a terrible idea and if an orgasm was really worth sacrificing your friendship over. But when he comes back to your room, carrying the full-length mirror from the bathroom, you were intrigued. He gently places it in front of your bed.

“Come here,” he says softly. You did as he asks and drags his hand from your collarbone and up your neck, forcing you to look up at him. He captures your lips in a kiss. His lips were so warm and soft that you could feel yourself melting in his arms. You feel his other hand move down to the tie of your robe, undoing it swiftly, and letting the silky black material fall off your body. He breaks the kiss the look down at you before looking back up at you through his thick lashes.

“A body like yours should never go unsatisfied.” His compliment made your heart race and you were more eager than ever to get his hands on you. You wasted no time pushing off his blazer and untucking his white v neck from his slacks. You loved the way he dressed. He was the perfect combination of sexy, classy and dangerous. But as of right now, all you wanted was to see these designer clothes littered across your hardwood floors. Once he was completely bare, he took the time to take off his newest watch, an investment you couldn’t even imagine making.

“Don’t want to get this wet.” He explained, placing the piece with his ring on the dresser. Then turned back to face her. And you couldn’t help but moan out loud at the sight. He was flawless. Every part of him was better than the fantasies you created in your head. “I want you, Roman. God, I want you.” You confessed. You started kissing down the smooth planes of his chest, lowering yourself with every peck. But before you could reach the place you wanted to go the most, Roman stopped you.

“I’m here for you.” He reminded you. Taking your hand and led you down to the floor. He moved your bodies so that his back was against the end of the bed, and your back was placed against his chest. He shifted beneath you slipping his long legs beneath yours and opened your legs. Looking into the mirror in front of you, you were displayed perfectly for him.

“I want you to watch me. You need to learn how to take care of this pretty little pussy of yours” he whispered into your ears. His fingers traced the outline of your lips and you let the long digits slipped through. “There’s a good girl.” He removed his fingers and brought them down your nipple. Circling around it so lightly, it almost tickled before roughly pulling on it, cause you to let out a gasp. He smiled at you through the reflection before continuing his ministrations. He lazily moved downwards until he got to where you really needed him. You were rolling your hips against him, not being able to sit still with his teasing. His fingers dragged slowly up from your wet opening to your clit. Then he starts circling around it at a slow and rhythmic pace.

“You like that?” He asked. He got his answer in the form of a soft moan. You reached behind you so you can grab his chocolate locks. Roman start nipping at your neck, finding the sensitive spot beneath your ear quite easily. He slid his other hand away from your nipple and down to your opening. Slipping two of his long and skillful fingers inside you. You had heard the rumors of the magical Roman fingers. But when he curved them to hit your spot so perfectly you almost screamed, you realized they were true.

“Look at yourself. You needed this didn’t you? You’re soaked.” You looked at yourself and you got the first glimpse of what he was capable of. Your whole body was on fire and your heaving chest and erect nipples were showing it. “I’m so close Roman. Please don’t stop.” You begged, grinding yourself harder against his length and his fingers. His legs kept you opened for him as both his hands worked tirelessly to get you off.

“Come on baby. Let it go for me, I know you can.” He encouraged. You reached the hand that wasn’t pulling at his hair to squeeze your own nipple. And with a few more seconds of stimulation your back arched away from his chest as your realase finally came. “Roman!” you screamed in ecstasy. Your orgasm hit you so hard that your whole body started convulsing. Roman’s hand slipped out of you and held you to his chest as his fingers kept circling around your clit, helping your release last as long as possible.

When your body finally stopped shaking, you slumped against his chest. You were completely spent. All those weeks of pent frustrations were finally gone and you never felt more relaxed. You turned back to look at Roman, his beautiful green eyes were completely blown.

“Do you want me to…” you trailed off. He shook his head and embarrassingly looked down at himself. “I already did.” You turned around to see he was right. The evidence was coated aross his chest and your back. You giggled a little. “The great sex god, Roman Godfrey, just came from having a girl grind on him?” You said teasingly. He lifted himself off the floor, shaking his head defensively. “You don’t get it. Watching a girl cum for you is just as sexy as getting blown. Especially if the girl is as gorgeous as you are.”

You made your way to your bed and by the time you got comfortable, Roman was back with a warm towel. Once you two were cleaned up, you guys made yourself comfortable on the bed. And with your head on chest and his hands in your hair, you let a “thank you” slip from your lips. You were so tired, you’re sure you imagined him saying “I’d do anything for you”.

I was at a con recently. And while looking at some of the art, I made a comment to a guy who had a collection of cat avengers prints that he was missing the best avenger. So he goes, ‘oh and who is that’ and I just kinda look sideways at him and say 'hawkeye, the only one you don’t have’. To wich he of course smirks and says 'is he really the best or is it just cause of jeremy renner?’

First of all… Jeremy Renner is a gorgeous human being and he is more than enough reason for Hawkeye to be awesome, so why the hell you got that smug look on your face like I’m just some random ass fangirl who don’t know shit about comics. I was fuckin dressed like Captain Marvel, 100% comic accurate costume thank you very much.

So my dad starts laughing cause he can see I got my 'fight me’ face on. And I proceed to list each and every reason why I have loved Hawkeye since waaaaay before the movies and why he gets even better with new movies and comics.

NUMBER ONE, he is the only fully human Avenger in every single story line.

To which of course I get 'well what about Black Widow’ well sir you must not know your comics very well because in the Earth-616 universe she has the Red Room version of the super soldier serum which gives her enhanced physical abilities as well as a very long lifespan.

Then comes the 'well Scott Lang is human’ well yeah but he’s got a mother FuCkiNG SUPER SUIT. What does Hawkeye have? Spandex or leather, not quite the same thing. And you take away that super suit, is Scott still a super hero? No he is in jail for being a thief. You take away Hawkeye ’ super sui… oh wait that’s right HE DON’T GOT ONE.

'But what about Black Panther he is human right?’ Do you know anything about comics dude? The dude eats a magical plant and is gifted his powers by the Wakandan Panther God and has enhanced speed, strength, agility, healing, reflexes, stamina, etc. NOT FULLY HUMAN he also is proclaimed King of the Dead and is granted the power and knowledge of past Black Panthers and gains the ability to control the dead… so awesome but still not human.

Hawkeye is 100% human 100% of the time (except a very brief moment when he borrowed pym particles just to help out on a mission) and still manages to keep up with super humans, gods and guys with fancy super suits.

NUMBER TWO, he is deaf, canononically.

'Well Daredevil is blind’ his accident enhanced his other senses… and not an Avenger… so your argument is not even relevant.

NUMBER THREE, he shoots a bow, usually a recurve, in battle with people that have magic and laser guns and other shit and he can shoot it with out even looking!

'But he has trick arrows’ wich are guaranteed to be weighted terribly and that weight changes depending on which arrow it is. So he not only has to compensate for the strange weight but he has to do it on the fly in the heat of battle for each individual arrow. Not to mention when he shoots multiple at once.

And come on, have you ever tried to shoot a bow and arrow, it’s not easy. It takes a lot of practice patients and skill. Especially to get as good as him.

NUMBER FOUR, I mean have you read the guys backstory? If you looked up tragic backstory in the dictionary, you would see a picture of Clint Barton. He was orphaned after his abusive father got into a car accident that killed his mother as well. Was sent to a children’s home, ran away to the circus, was trained by Swordsman and Trickshot who were not the best mentors, was betrayed and abandoned by Swordsman and his brother and left for dead, ended up severely injuring his brother, had to leave Trickshot, when he tried to do the hero thing he was mistaken for a criminal, was manipulated into trying to kill Iron Man, kept falling in love with women who didn’t love him back, left the Avengers at one point believing he was unwanted, was passed over because he was not super human, watched his brother die, was forced to leave the Avengers, had a bounty put on his right arm, lost former mentor Trickshot to cancer, split with his wife then watched her die saving him, sacrificed himself and came back, was almost assasinated, went to prison so the rest of his team could go free, was shot and conducted a suicide mission that saved the planet but killed him, lost his memory, was vanished into nothingness, doubted he was himself or even alive, faked his death, and that’s just the short list.

NUMBER FIVE, he ran the West Coast branch of the Avengers, as well as other treams.

NUMBER SIX, he took on the mantle of Captain America for a short time.

NUMBER SEVEN, Caw Caw Mother Fucker.

So yeah, suffice to say that I left the guy speechless surounded by his friends who were nodding along and adding in their own bits of info and laughing hysterically at him. I turned to walk away after that mic drop and heard him mumble, 'well I guess I’m making a cat hawkeye’

anonymous asked:

anyway talk to me about Steve Trevor

you don’t have to ask me twice lol pull up a seat yall let’s talk about my son for a minute

this beautiful bastard:

(and i say this as someone who has never thought chris pine was anything more than average-looking)

so first of all, let’s talk about steve’s entrance. he’s on a doomed plane that crashes in the ocean, and then he’s rescued little-mermaid-stylez and dragged onto the themyscira beach by diana. he doesn’t have any time to orient himself or try to figure out where exactly he is and who exactly he’s with, before suddenly the germans are there and the amazons are swinging out like a bunch of super hot lesbian tarzans. so what is steve’s response to all of this tomfoolery?? he immediately joins the badass lesbian army and tries to help, even shielding diana–a complete and total stranger–with his own body. he doesn’t think “hey why are all these women in tasteful body armor fighting?? where are the men??” he thinks “ok these are soldiers fighting the bad guys and i’m gonna do whatever i can to help.”

and honestly that’s steve in a nutshell? he just wants to do whatever he can to help, whether that’s by spying and collecting intel for the allied forces, or by sneaking behind enemy lines to try and stop millions more from dying, or by lifting a giant sheet of metal so his superhero girlfriend can rocket launch herself through a tower. he’s flexible.

also like look at steve’s friends, and the way he treats his friends?? we have etta, who is admittedly more of an employee than a friend but he still treats her like his equal, and she’s clearly not afraid to speak her mind around him which tells us that they have an easy and open relationship. then there’s charlie, the alcoholic suffering from ptsd whom steve respects and supports in his recovery. then there’s sameer, a north african moc whom again, steve respects and admires the talent of. and then there’s my dude chief!!! an actual native american!!! whom steve respects and cares about greatly!! steve cares about people, proven time and time again both by how he treats the individuals around him and how ready he is to literally die if he thinks it might save others.

and then ofc there’s the way he treats diana, the real pickle on the Best Damn Sandwich that is steve trevor. he doesn’t just treat diana like she’s some tourist that he’s grudgingly dragging around the western front (cough whedon cough). he respects and admires diana and then, later, he loves her, and he makes sure that she knows that. he makes sure that she knows how amazing and inspirational she is, how important she is. “i can save today, but you can save the world” is such a good line because steve is literally acknowledging that she can do what no one else can, and that’s a good thing.

so often we see leading males who are intimidated by their female counterparts if they sense they might be stronger than them. they crack a joke about how the woman “got lucky” or are quick to point out something they can do that the woman can’t. “you’re pretty good–for a girl” nonsense.

steve does none of that, and in fact, does the opposite. outside of themyscira, steve is diana’s biggest fan, her number one supporter, the guy holding her flower while she throws down–and then jumping in if he thinks he can help her.

he lets her lead, consistently, once he realizes that she can. ofc at first he’s a little hesitant to let her just march through no man’s land, but the moment he sees her deflect those first bullets, he turns into her cheerleader. ofc he’s a little hesitant to believe that one mythological god could be behind the greatest war that had ever existed, but once again, the moment ares turns up, steve is ready to assist diana in whatever way he can. including sacrificing himself to save the day, while she goes on to save the future.

there were so many opportunities for him to make some crude comment about her costume, or about themyscira only having women, or about her “inexperience with men” etc (cough whedon cough) but steve is nothing but a gentleman throughout, always following diana’s lead in that as well. he’s uncomfortable when she sees him naked, but when he realizes she’s fine, he just goes with it, without making any crude jokes or invitations. on the boat, he’s embarrassed about sleeping next to her lol and then in england, he wants her to change her clothes not because he doesn’t approve of them, but because he knows they would stand out too much when they need to blend in. even when he does ask about the lack of men on the island, it’s clearly just curiosity, and once again he’s awkward about it, not wanting to be too forward or rude. he respects diana’s boundaries from the moment that he meets her.

look at the way he looks at her:

awe-struck. steve always had faith in people, even as he also recognized the bad in others too. he could have given up on stopping the war after his plane crashed, but he didn’t even hesitate before jumping back onto the front lines. even though he genuinely believed he was going to die. he didn’t hesitate before climbing into that bomb-laden plane, even though he knew he was going to die. because at the end of the day, steve always believed that the world could be saved, and that maybe he could help that happen.

and then he met diana, and he knew that she could.

when he had to tell her that humanity wasn’t all good, or all bad, but instead a mix of grays, you could see he didn’t want to admit it. not because he didn’t believe it was true, but because he didn’t want to break diana’s heart. he didn’t want to be the reason she lost faith. but he still told her the truth, because (even though he’s literally a spy and lies a lot lol) to steve, the truth is what matters. truth, and faith, and doing what’s best, even if it’s not the best thing for him.

when diana said she was giving up on mankind, and that they didn’t deserve her, he didn’t try to make her stay. he said “maybe it’s not about what people deserve, maybe it’s about doing what you believe in,” because that was the thought that got him through the war. but when diana still wasn’t willing, he turned and went back to fight on his own, because even though it hurt him, even though he wanted to stay with her, he knew that was the right thing.

his last words were reassuring diana that she could save the world, and that he loved her. and these were his last thoughts:

“He wasn’t afraid. But he was wistful. He wanted to show Diana the beautiful parts of this world. To share it with her.”

to share it with her. because steve loved diana as an equal. he wanted more time to share with her. it would have been easy to just let the plane get away, or let someone else take the fall, but that isn’t who steve is. steve would always do what he could to help. sometimes that meant fighting alongside a bunch of amazons on a beach. sometimes it meant buying wonderwoman ice cream. and sometimes it meant getting in a plane to die, because if he didn’t, other people would die instead.

the reason that wondertrev works so beautifully is because diana and steve are, at their core, the same. they both believe in goodness, and love. they both believe in helping. when diana’s ears are still ringing and she can’t even hear what he’s saying, and she looks ready to pass out, the first thing she says is “i can do it, let me do it.” she’s so ready and willing to do whatever he needs, and steve just smiles because he understands, because he’s like that too. steve’s faith is what reignited diana’s own belief, at the end, and at the end, steve died believing in her.

title: five stages of grief

summary: Six years is a lot of time to grieve the loss of the girl who has your heart.

one) denial

When Bellamy wakes up the day After, he doesn’t cry, even though he feels the sadness resting at the hollow of his throat and stinging at his eyes. In his chest, his heart is breaking, and there’s a deep, near-bottomless emptiness, but there’s also hope. The kind that cuts, makes it hard to breathe. She could be out there, he thinks. She could be alive; he hopes, and it is torture. Because she isn’t. He has to accept that. Besides, he thinks bitterly, he has all the time in the world.

I’m sorry… but I will never understand how Zutara is deemed unhealthy, dark, and abusive. I refuse to believe that relationship would’ve been anything other than wholly understanding and loving - and I’ll show you why… with pictures.

At the end of season two and the beginning of season three, we see Zuko struggling with his view of right and wrong. He’s betrayed his uncle, he’s going home, he’s struggling with a whirlwind of emotion and when given the opportunity to open up, by a girl who’s known him his entire life, he readily takes it.

Mai: Aren’t you cold?
Zuko: I’ve got a lot of my mind. It’s been so long… over three years since I was home. I wonder what’s changed. I wonder how I’ve changed.

In any functioning, healthy relationship, you would expect this flood of feelings and thoughts to met with sympathy or input or at the very least… a hand on the shoulder and a comforting hug. Instead, Zuko is basically told to shut up, to put up, to push the feelings away because they aren’t important enough to be bothered with.

Now, you might come at me and say well, Mai really didn’t ask. She just wanted to know if he was cold and that’s fine. I give you this:

Under Ba Sing Se, Zuko interacts with Katara in a calm environment. This is the first time they are together and not fighting and they have a chance to talk. Katara, obviously, takes the opportunity to rant and rage about how terrible Zuko is and he quietly sits there and takes it. He only protests, peacefully stating that she knows nothing about him, when she’s finished her wild stream of thoughts, to which Katara responds as such:

Katara: I don’t? How dare you! You have no idea what this war has put me through. Me personally! The Fire Nation took my mother away from me.
Zuko, sympathetically: I’m sorry. That’s something we have in common.

Now, Zuko could’ve simply said I’m sorry. He could’ve stopped there. But he slips and lets a bit of information about his past hang in the air. In turn, this angry, hurt waterbender - who is raw and emotional after opening up to the enemy - could’ve easily told him to shut up. She would have every right to. He’s hurt her. He’s scared her and chased her all over the world.

But she doesn’t. She’s known him for five minutes, but she quickly turns around and let’s Zuko open up about his life, his scar, the things that bother him. And then she offers to fix one of the things that weighs him down!!!

And these are quiet, peaceful moments between these pairs. There’s no fighting or drama. If you really want to see how these relationships function, let’s look at periods when both parties are upset with the other.

For example, let’s assess two intense interactions between Mai and Zuko in the Boiling Rock and then, Katara and Zuko in the Southern Raiders.

In the Boiling Rock, Mai is angry with Zuko for leaving the Fire Nation, essentially dumping her in the process, and only explaining his motivations and plans through a letter. Now, I get why she says she deserved a face-to-face conversation, but why does she think she deserves one? She shut him down when he last expressed his conflicting decisions, so why does she think he would even feel comfortable explaining his choice to commit treason?

And look at his body language - they’re together again and there is a chance for her to let him express himself in the way she wants, but she’s belittled him. He’s made to feel small and worthless by someone he thought he could trust (hmmm sound familiar *cough* Ozai *cough*). Then that’s it. She decides whatever he’s said is enough and she’s through and she throws the letter at him, promptly storming out.

Then we have the Southern Raiders… Katara feeling the bitter sting of Zuko’s betrayal in Ba Sing Se is given a chance to get an explanation from him.

First of all, Zuko seeks her out. It’s obvious she’s pissed, but they are facing each other, having an eye-level conversation, and Zuko’s expression holds remorse and an earnest drive to fix the problem. Even in the intense, heated moment, Katara shows him a certain amount of respect. She takes him head on. She doesn’t belittle or negate him. She gives valid reasons why she’s upset and he listens and tries to fix it.

In a way, he does fix it - the best he can. Katara is heartbroken (much more than Mai is) and she let’s him take her on this journey with an unknown ending and trusts him with her decision - whatever it is. He doesn’t pressure her, he doesn’t push his thoughts or feelings on her. He let’s her be… until Katara decides she’s through and she forgives him. SHE FORGIVES HIM. She forgives the face of the enemy, the son of the man that terrorized her home, the countryman of the person who killed her mother. She forgives him and it’s like this fucking weight lifts off both of them.

Sure… you can come at me and say Oh, well Mai saved Zuko at the Boiling Rock… Okay fine, I’ll give you that.  It didn’t change anything between them. She came right back at the end of the series and threatened him again. Is she still so incapable of understanding his motivations? Can she not see what his decision brought about? Look around you, Mai! Zuko sacrificed everything and, in turn, saved the world. He wasn’t purposefully being hurtful and vindictive. He wasn’t trying to disappoint you. He was trying to bring about a better future and he fucking succeeded.

And I just want to post that image side-by-side with the image of Katara kneeling over him post-lightning scene. Katara watches Zuko - the future Fire Lord, the world’s last chance for a decent ruler in the Fire Nation - throw his life by the way side in favor of hers. He literally tossed aside everything they’d worked for and hoped for - he almost gave it all up to save her life.

Mai - who’s relationship was sacrificed for the greater good - threatens Zuko. Katara - who’s last year has been spent training and building up to this final battle - doesn’t. She understands him. She gets him. She’s grateful for him.

From their very first, real interaction, Katara gets Zuko. She takes the time to learn about him and he takes the time to learn about her. It’s healthy. It’s conducive. And even if you don’t think it’s romantic, it’s certainly some next level friend shit.

If anything, it’s the first relationship shown here that’s unhealthy.

Can i request a hc where MC is the sister (younger or older, your choice) of RFA + minor trio?

This… is literally the latest request in the inbox and we basically never do the latest req in consideration of older reqs who have waited weeks/months… but this was really fun to imagine, and very simple to write compared to everything else!

It’s relaxing to do something simple like this once in while ^O^ Thank you for the request!!

RFA as Your Older Sibling

Yoosung Kim

  • While he’s the childish one in the RFA, he’s an entirely different person around his baby sister
  • Although he slacks off on his own studies at college, if you mentioned that you had trouble with any of your own work, he would research the topics, learn it himself and teach you to help you understand
  • Always worried sick when you’re on trips away from home, even when it’s only for a day at a school trip
  • Tries to respect your decisions in relationships, and holds back his concerns, not wanting to overwhelm you
  • Calls when has time, but never too often, so he doesn’t disturb you
  • Basically, a very thoughtful brother
  • The type to spoil you at home, does your share of the chores, gives his servings of your favourite dishes and snacks
  • If you ever got lost, he’d run around frantically to find you—only to get lost as well, but he’d always end up bumping into you by accident. He’d never tell you that it was only an accident though, letting you think your older brother had magical powers that told him where you were
  • You stopped believing that as you grew older, but it still made you smile every time he found you

Zen

  • The overprotective, overbearing brother
  • Because to him, you’re his adorable little sister who is too cute for the world. …Besides, he’s really handsome himself. It’s no surprise those good looking genes run through you, too…
  • Always too busy glaring at other guys who dare to look at you, to the point he doesn’t realize how much attention he attracts from the girls
  • Tells you all the worst things about guys
  • “They’ll play with your heart, you shouldn’t trust them! I promise I’ll beat them up if anyone tries to hurt you, okay?! Seriously, men are wolves, please please please be careful…”
  • When you asked him if he was like that too, he spluttered before exclaiming, “NO! You can definitely trust me, baby sis. I’ll never, ever hurt you.”
  • Always worried about you. After he moved out, he would call you EVERY night
  • And before he moved out, he would be the one who picked you up from school and social gatherings, and he was almost always early, which upset you because you wanted more time with your friends
  • Bragged about you to everyone he met
  • He’d definitely regret talking about you so much to his co-workers though…
  • Very likely that he’ll bring you to his studio where you meet his co-stars… one of which, ends up falling for you completely and listens very attentively every time Zen talks about you… And you felt the sparks, and damn, that guy was pretty hot (he’s an actor, after all)
  • You’d keep going back to the studio under the guise of visiting your brother… when in reality, you went to check out his co-star… who eventually gave you his number…
  • Well, no one was surprised that Zen beat him up after finding out about your relationship
  • Still, Zen wanted his little sister to be happy, so he permitted the two of you to date. He swore that he would murder your boyfriend if he broke your heart but… hey, several years later and you were married.
  • Zen cried a lot at your wedding…

Jumin

  • He’s always been bad with women because a lot, ahem, A LOT of women were after his family’s money… So he wasn’t completely sure how to act around you either, even though you’re his blood sister.
  • He definitely loves you a lot though, having grown up by your side. He’s just awkward expressing it
  • You’re the only girl in his life that he doesn’t mind because you’re his sister, so he babies you and treats you with utmost respect and care
  • Bombards you with gifts
  • Begs father to lend him money so he can buy expensive gifts that you’ve mentioned to really, really want
  • The first person to take you to the concert of your favourite artist—he hates crowds and he hates being in public because the family name follows him, but he’ll go for you
  • Would be against you studying abroad… but if you threw a tantrum with him, he’d give in
  • Panics when you cry
  • Pays the bodyguards to beat up anyone who eyes or touches you inappropriately
  • Whenever you’re out together, he has a protective arm around your shoulder
  • Being the children of the C&R Chairman, the two of you would have to attend a ton of formal business meetings and parties. He held your hand through every one, but as you grew older, it would be seen as ‘inappropriate’ so your arms would be linked instead.
  • A very loving brother, although he never expressed it through words.

Jaehee

  • People already saw Jaehee as a tough, independent woman… but they haven’t seen her around her little sister. Gosh, she was even tougher.
  • In public, she would send nasty looks at the guys who eyed you, snarling at them to turn their head
  • And she was ALWAYS ready to fight for you—you were the reason she learned judo. So she could protect you.
  • After all, your parents had died early on in your lives.
  • Started working early to support your education and living fees
  • She was a big sister that you greatly admired because she was so strong… When you were little, you wanted to be just like her
  • But Jaehee encouraged you to be yourself, of course.
  • Her door is open for you at any time, whether you need advice, a shoulder to cry on, or help with studying
  • Stresses about your exams and assessment results more than you do!
  • Prepares your lunch for school, and wakes up early to make you breakfast even though she sleeps late every night due to work
  • The only reason she takes days off is because of you—when you catch a cold, when you need someone by your side, your graduation, your appointments…
  • Always cared more about your opinions and preferences than her own—she’d make the food you like to eat even if she doesn’t like it much herself, or if you wanted to go somewhere, she’d go with you… And she would even drop her own plans for you!
  • As you grew older, you refused to let her keep sacrificing for you, and tried to depend less on her
  • She’d notice quickly and laugh, telling you that she loves taking care of you. “Haha, you’re so cute for wanting to be independent. Please, let me spoil you~”

Saeyoung and Saeran

  • They come in a pair, of course
  • Saeyoung’s the one who jumps on your bed to wake you up in the morning, which earns himself a scolding from Saeran every day. And a smack on the head. With a pan.
  • When Saeran gets a tattoo, he tries to hide it from you because he didn’t want you to get one as well… but you did, anyway, and he was there to hold your hand to endure the pain throughout the entire time
    • It would be a secret two of you kept from Saeyoung
    • Well, until he spies on Saeran in the shower and whines that he wants a matching one since they were twins…
    • Saeyoung would be very jealous that you’d left him out
  • Saeran was the “cool” brother
    • You’d go to his room whenever you just wanted peace and quiet, and he’d never question it
    • Has his music turned up, blaring through the house honestly, but you liked it that way—especially since it bothered the annoying brother
  • Saeyoung was always silly and overly cheerful, and you’d be embarrassed for your friends to meet him
    • He wasn’t all fun and jokes, though. When he didn’t feel like acting sunshiney, he was the type to lean against your doorframe and ask if you want to head out with him
    • And he’d drive you around the city, aimless. In those times, it was often quiet, but it was a nice silence
  • In public, he’d kiss you on your cheeks or your forehead, making others misunderstand that he was your lover
    • Which honestly he didn’t mind because he didn’t appreciate the thought of other guys hanging around you
    • But he didn’t have to worry about that
  • Because even if his falsely-interpreted affectionate, brotherly touches were ignored, Saeran would be there to scare the crap out of the guys who did try to approach you
  • Needless to say, you never had a boyfriend or girlfriend, all throughout your school years because of them
  • But you didn’t mind too much. They were already a handful to handle
    • Aka they were messy and annoying and you had to clean up after them at home while dealing with their occasional attitudes
  • But you loved them all the same

Jihyun

  • Spoils you so much, honestly
  • He’d look after you all the time
  • And if you ever broke something in the house, he covers up for you, saying it was his fault
  • Your parents would accuse him of being a bad child, but he was always happy about it because he was able to protect you from their anger
  • Even when you grew up and stayed out late with your friends, he’d cover up for you and make excuses to your parents
  • Whenever you could spend time together, he’d always take you somewhere that made you feel better. Often, it’d be a place you want to go to, except you never understood how he figured it out
  • When he finally got his driver’s license and car, he took you for a ride first
  • Never got a girlfriend because he was too busy worrying about you instead
  • You’d have to be the one to urge him to date
  • Teary-eyed at your graduation
  • Tutors you for your classes
  • Always made time for you, even if he was studying for important exams, or if he was a whole city away, or if you awoke him at 4AM in the night
  • Never raised his voice at you. Ever. He’d step in if anyone, your parents or even friends, dared to shout at you. He’d risk getting beat up, as long as you were unharmed
  • In fact, Jihyun got into a lot of fights because of you, even though he had zero fighting skills and didn’t even bother to raise a fist back at his opponents
  • You’d yell at him each time, crying because he got hurt again but he never blames you and it only makes you feel worse…
  • But he loves you, and he’d do anything to protect your smile.

What This Family Does

My own fix-it fic - written before 6x17, but I didn’t publish it before. Slightly canon divergent, but not much… Killian comes back from Neverland, and Snowing are awake already. I felt Killian deserved a little more than just being forgiven.

title: What This Family Does

summary: Killian comes back from Neverland, and some things should not be swept under the rug.

rating: a very tame T - and F for lots and lots of forgiveness… because that’s what this family does, after all.

also on ff.net and ao3

When he’s finally back in their home, weariness settles into his bones as he sinks on the couch.

Staring into the fire that’s crackling against the crispy cold outside, his mind starts to drift, and he thinks back to the moment he was about to burn the dreamcatcher with his awful memories. Without even noticing, Killian runs his hand over his face and sighs.

David didn’t murder him, not even punch him in the face, on the contrary – he showed what looked like genuine relief, maybe even joy when he finally managed to return to Storybrooke, the bloody Crocodile’s offspring’s curse broken. But he knows there will come the moment – sooner than later, probably – when they’ll have to have a serious talk about the disastrous events that took place all those years ago, in that night he ran his vicious blade through a completely innocent man and destroyed yet another family.  In fact, destroying families and orphaning guiltless children seems to be his specialty.

But… he reminds himself that this is in the past, and he has finally made his peace with the fact that his past doesn’t define him. What does define him are his actions and his choices, the man he is now: the man who managed to defy the darkness of Excalibur, the man who stands up for his loved ones, the man who helps justice to be done, curses to be broken and families and lovers to find each other again. The man he is now – he knows and accepts it, that man deserves love, he deserves trust and he deserves a happy ending. And if he has to work a little harder for that, then he’ll do it. He’ll do whatever it takes to set things right with David, his best friend aside from Emma, and he’ll do what he must to prove himself to her, show her that he does have trust in her and their love. He can only hope that it is enough to make her believe in him again and trust in their relationship enough to make her want to be his wife.

In the three years he’d known her, Sasuke had never seen her look as miserable as she did right now; standing on his front porch in the pouring rain at two in the morning, hair and clothes soaking wet, her green eyes red-rimmed with recently shed tears. She was a wild mess—a picture-perfect embodiment of a brokenhearted girl silently crying out for comfort.

Sasuke couldn’t help but to wordlessly invite her inside just for that.

“Stay here,” he said, when she’d stepped into the threshold of his home and stood feebly in the hall, body wracked with shivers. “I’ll get you a towel.”

Frowning, he quickly left the room to carry on the task. And when he returned a few minutes later, he found much to his surprise that Sakura still hadn’t moved at all. His eyes softened, lips mulling into a thin line. Stepping closer to her, Sasuke reached out to wrap her still shaking form in the thick, dry towel, before decidedly rubbing his hands firmly over the length of her arms, trying to coax her body into generating some warmth.

It was only then that she seemed to snap out of her trance, sad, broken eyes flickering up to meet his gaze.

“We had a fight again,” she spoke, finally, her voice frail and thick with grief. He could see new tears staring to well up. “And I think it’s really bad this time, Sasuke-kun… I don’t think we can come back from this one…”

His heart quickened at that, and he almost swallowed. Letting out a slow, quiet breath, Sasuke squeezed a hand around her shoulder, and jerked his head towards the living room. “Come on—go sit down. I’ll make you some tea. Maybe things won’t seem so bad when you tell me about it.”

He watched as Sakura nodded, pulling the towel closer to herself, before she mutely made her way to his living room, shoulders heavily slumped. Once he was sure she well out of earshot, Sasuke ran a hand over his face and made a sort of self-loathing sound, hands clenching into tight fists.

Why was it that when he heard her essentially say she thought her relationship with his best friend was over, the first thing he felt was a rush of excitement?

(falling in love with his best friend’s girlfriend… he was the worst kind of trash in the world.)

GoT Afterthoughts 7x04 The Spoils Of War (Jonsa Edition) SPOILERS

Ugh …so much drama with the leaking of this episode. It was extremely hard to keep myself unspoiled, but I managed (mostly). I know a lot of you have been waiting for this recap, so let’s get down to business …..

Wow. This episode felt so rushed! For the life of me, I will never understand D&D’s logic for cutting this season and the next short, for all the content they need to cram into them.

So, with that being said, we start this weeks episode off in High Garden (or is it Highgarden?). The Lannister and Tarly soldiers have cleaned out High Garden’s riches and food supply and have a caravan headed back to Kings Landing. Jamie gives Bronn his big bag of gold because “a Lannister always pays his debts” but Bronn still wants his castle. lol After poking fun at Jamie’s sour mood despite their victory, Bronn goes with Lord Tarly and Dickon to assist in getting the rest of the harvest. Winter is here, and food is needed.

Side note: I love Bronn. Jamie and Tyrion should totally adopt him when this is all over.

Back in Kings Landing, Cersei is again meeting with the Iron Bank dude, who’s happy to continue supporting her ventures, as long as they get their money. She assures him his gold is on the way.

We head to Winterfell (yay!) where LF is busy being fucking creepy, as usual. He gives Bran the dagger that the cutthroat tried to use to assassinate him in the first season. He proceeds to blow smoke up Bran’s ass about how he will always protect Cat’s children and blah blah blah, sweet Jesus Petyr, we are tired of hearing the same lame shit come out of your mouth! (at least, I am). He tells Bran it’s the dagger that essentially started the war of the 5 Kings and that in a way, it made him what he is today.

Some very interesting things I gleaned from this scene:

  • When Bran asks him if he knows who it belonged to -I believe this was a rhetorical question. I think Bran knows exactly who it belonged to.
  • LF is shook when he says the word chaos and Bran claps back with “chaos is a ladder.” Mmhmm.
  • That is the weapon LF will die by. Without a doubt. (and it’s sweet poetic justice).
  • “I’m not Lord Stark” -another reminder that Sansa is the heir to Winterfell, as Bran will probably slip further into his 3ER role until that’s all he is and Bran no longer exists.

Meera interrupts. She wants to go home and see her family before the Others come. Meera is hurt by how cold and distant Bran is after all she sacrificed for him, and Bran confirms what I said last week -he’s NOT Bran anymore. The more he hones his powers, the more the parts of him that are Bran will disappear -which is why he’s so void of emotions. It’s not trauma (although he’s been through and seen some pretty traumatic shit), it’s just the part of him that was Bran is literally dying as the 3ER takes over.

And Arya is home!!!!! Omg omg omg!!!

What is it with poor Arya and gate guards keeping her out? Okay, just seeing Arya’s face as she glances around Winterfell and looks at the banner -it made me so emotional, my husband laughed at me. He’s a dick, what can I say?

The guards let Sansa know about the girl at the gate, and how she’s gone now, and once Sansa hears who the girl asked for, she knows it’s really Arya and exactly where to find her. She heads to the crypts and there’s Arya in front of Ned’s statue.

This was a beautiful reunion! I know it wasn’t nearly as emotional as Sansa and Jon’s -and frankly, I don’t think any of them are going to be, and I believe that’s intentional, but for the Stark sisters -it suited them, and who they are, and who they’ve become. There’s no hate or animosity here …they even tease each other a bit, and it’s just so lovely and ashgdhjxugyfkcufyskfjcjcaa I AM SO EMOTIONAL!!!!! And we got not just one hug, but two!!! TWO!!!! I said before that D&D had better make this reunion worth while, and for me, they delivered. I love how Arya said that their stories aren’t over yet.

A few things that stood out to me in this scene:

  • Arya telling Sansa that being Lady Stark suited her. I’m not sure this is foreshadowing or just Arya giving her sister some kudos. Either way, it warmed my heart.
  • Sansa bringing up Jon, and not only how excited he was about her reunion, but how thrilled he’ll be to see Arya too -this served two purposes: Sansa again, bringing up Jon at a time she feels vulnerable/safe, and at the same time validating Arya and how important she is to Jon.
  • Arya mentions her kill list, and Sansa thinks she’s joking.

Sansa tells Arya that Bran is home too, and we head out into the Godswood. No matter how unemotional Bran is, it’s beautiful to see my Starklings all together in one place again! ❤️ My heart literally grew three times its size!

After a brief hug, Bran tells Arya that he saw her at the crossroads and that he thought she’d go to Kings Landing. Sansa offers that Bran has visions now, and Bran says that Cersei is on her list of names. The look on Sansa’s face puzzled me for a minute -because she looks a bit worried, but then she kind of smirks a bit when she asks Arya who else is on her list. Now, I think that the writers want us to think that Sansa suspects she *might* be on that list, but I’m telling you now that’s utter bullshit. Lady Stark has taken over her new role in every aspect and that includes mothering her two younger siblings. I believe her look comes more from a parental place of worrying, and I bet the next few episodes will prove me right -ahem, did I not call the whole Bran is no longer Bran thing last week? Thank you.

As Bran pulls out the dagger and gives it to Arya, this only further confirms my feelings. Immediately, Sansa is suspicious. Why? Because she knows LF better than anyone, and she knows he doesn’t do anything that won’t benefit himself. I suspect she is both worried for her siblings, and thinks LF is trying to sway Bran into taking the Lordship so that he can ask for Sansa’s hand in marriage while Jon’s away. It’s the only thing that makes sense to me in regards to LF visiting Bran earlier in the episode. I also think this is all more fodder for fake ass Starkbowl too -to confuse the viewers.

Some things that stood out in this scene:

  • Bran gives the dagger to Arya. Arya is going to be the one who kills LF -Bran knows, he’s seen it, and that’s why he gives the dagger to her.
  • My heart -when he says it’s wasted on a cripple and Sansa looks down sadly.

Okay, our Starklings are headed back within Winterfell, and OMG my heart is exploding! And Brienne’s heart, too! Podrick tells her she kept her vow to Catelyn and she should be proud, and you can tell that she’s not used to being complimented. As usual, LF is creeping in the shadows like the human embodiment of a bloodsucking tick.

Another side note: Podrick is also a precious dewdrop! Put him in the same category with Davos.

Now we’re at Dragonstone ..dun dun dunnn. Sigh, well come on, let’s get it over with. We start this scene with Missandei insinuating that GW kissed the kitty and Jon interrupts them from below to bring Dany into a cave. Well, how clever. *eyeroll* I mean, you seriously have to laugh at that.

Jon wants to show Dany the dragon glass before they begin mining it, and it is quite lovely. Jon tells her he wants to show her something else, and the two of them head farther into the cave alone. Cramped quarters, and Dany seems winded from the walk up, because she’s literally panting. Wtf??

Maybe the airs really thin?

Jon explains that the hieroglyphics on the walls are from the Children of the forest, and Dany seems awed to be standing in the same place. She passes the torch by some stick figures resembling the Children and the first men, and Jon narrates how they fought together against the common enemy, as her torch falls on the drawings of the WW’s.

Ummm …….. no?

I mean, I’m pretty sure the Children made them to kill the first men originally, right? But Jon doesn’t know that, and he needs Dany on his side, so go ahead and improvise Jonny baby. 😉

Now, I’m assuming that this scene was meant to be romantic because of the sudden romantic music playing in the background and the open stares between them in the soft torchlight. Kit’s doing that soft half puppy/half fuck me stare, as Dany sashays slowly towards him.

“I will fight for you. I will fight for the north. When you bend the knee.”

Annnnnnd there goes Jon’s erection. If he had one … hahahahah! He tells her again that he can’t, and then Dany drops the BIGGEST hypocrite bomb EVER - “aren’t his people more important than his pride?” Really? No seriously, REALLY? Who’s prideful here? Someone get that girl a mirror because she has some serious soul searching to do!

But here’s the thing -I went into this scene expecting to be beat over the head with romance tropes and vibes (according to what I’ve seen you all post over the last few days) and I truly didn’t see/feel it. It’s not that I didn’t want to … I was really actually trying to, but I felt more like they were once again trying to show us a juxtaposition on who these two people really are.

They emerge from the cave and Tyrion and Varys have good and bad news -they’ve got Casterly Rock …but not really. Naturally, Dany is pissed. She demands that Jon and Davos remain while she has her tantrum. She implies that Tyrion is working against her, then gazing ominously out to sea at her Dragons says she’s going to fly them to the Red Keep. When Tyrion advises her against it, she asks Jon’s opinion. He doesn’t want to be involved but she insists.

Jon gives her really good advice, actually. He tells her to BE DIFFERENT. He tells her to be what her people think she is, and not just more of the same shit they’re used to. He tells her not to use her Dragons.

Now we’re back to Winterfell and Brienne is training Podrick again. Where’s Brienne’s cheerleader, Tormund? I half expected him to pop out from behind a wagon with heart eyes. lol  Arya wants to train with Brienne -she obviously admires her, and I ship them -my new brotp. 😍

They quick shoot up to Sansa and LF on the battlements and the grain is brought up again. Food is a big theme in this episode, as it’s mentioned in the beginning with Jamie, Dany also mentions feeding her army during her tantrum, and now Sansa, too.

She stops in mid sentence to watch what’s unfolding below with Arya and Brienne. She gets a worried look and side eyes LF when Arya mentions Brienne swore to serve both of Cat’s daughters (again, more writers bait to instill fake mistrust between the sisters -it’s more likely that Sansa mistrusts LF and what’s currently motivating him).

This fight scene is AMAZING! Two strong, beautiful women -individually talented in their own ways …this is the shit I live for!!! Arya looks and moves strikingly like Jon (before he took on Ned’s persona) -(wo)man bun and all!

Again, Sansa with her odd looks, and her side-eyeing of LF …they are laying it on thick.

Also, Gendry better watch out -Podrick’s got some serious heart eyes for Arya.

We head back to Dragonstone, and Davos and Jon are strolling the grounds (aren’t you supposed to be mining, mofo???). Again, I’m going to break away from everyone on the romance vibes here -I think that Davos is being facetious. When he asks Jon what he thinks of Dany, he never tells us what he feels, and when Jon says “she has a good heart”, Davis replies with “yeah, I’ve noticed you’ve been staring at her good heart”, implying that Jon’s been looking at her tits. Where’s the romance in that? That’s not love -that’s physical attraction. Let’s not mix the two just yet.

Jon immediately rebuffs Davos with -“There’s no time for that” the convo switches gears to the NK and how many men they’ve got up north. And then Davos jumps back to “good hearts” deliberately and LOUDLY, as they approach Missandei. This seems odd to me … I’ve already speculated that Jon may go undercover lover on Dany as he did to Ygritte, and many have disagreed with me -but I kind of feel like that might be what they are setting up here …

Missandei greets them “Ser Davos, Lord Snow” -and immediately Davos puts the brakes on that shit, “it’s King Snow, or is it King Jon?” (I love Davos).  We go over the concept of bastard, which leads to how Missandei got to be an advisor to Dany. And here again, I feel is another play on words to show how distrustful of Dany both Jon and Davos are (yet managed to fool everyone into thinking it’s ringing romance bells and trying to convince Jon how precious the D is) -Davos reminds her that she’s still “serving” Dany (reminiscent of what the Masters in Meereen said to GW) as to which Missandei replies that she does it freely. Jon is skeptical (and really, so am I) and asks if she wanted to leave and sail home to Narth tomorrow …? Missandei is insistent that Dany would drop her on a boat and wish her good fortune.

Jon (still skeptical): “you believe that?”

Ohhh, he struck a nerve. Missandei very passionately declares “she knows it” and says that all who followed her (Dany) from Essos followed her because they believe in Dany and chose her as queen (ya know, except for those who didn’t). Davos says “would you forgive me if I switch sides?” And again, I can’t help thinking  how deliberate that line is -Davos is smart and he’s a good talker (as shown throughout the entire series), and I really feel like he’s playing them. I could be wrong, but my gut is really just telling me that something is off here.

Ahhh, and the scene I’ve been waiting for that conveniently comes after all this fake Dany romance BS -a Greyjoy ship is spotted just off the coast! Props to both my boys here, because they played up the tension and emotional angst nicely. Jon moves forward slowly, and then Theon too.

T: Sansa ….she alright?

The minute her name is on Theon’s lips, Jon’s chest begins to heave and he lunges forward and grabs Theon by the front of his shirt, vehemently stating that “what you did for her is the only reason I’m not killing you.”

WOOT WOOT the murder kitten strikes again! Kit is sooooo good with these emotional facial scenes, my God! Do any of you really doubt this ship????

Jon is fucking in love with Sansa -it is so clearly evident that when he realizes his Starkcest is showing, he abruptly releases Theon, and shoves him away -just in time to zoom in on Davos, and guys -HE KNOWS! DAVOS KNOWS!!!

He (Davos) cleverly shifts the subject to Theon’s fleet and Yara. Euron’s got her. Theon asks where Dany is and they inform him she’s not there.

We jump back over to Jamie and his troops. They are finishing gathering up the harvest (food again) and Lord Tarly suggests flogging any slackers. Jamie is against this -the writers emphasizing yet again that he’s a good man/leader -which is emphasized FURTHER when he chats with Dickon about his feelings on his first battle. Dickon admits it was hard killing people he literally grew up with, and Jamie shows empathy -“they didn’t deserve to die, but Lady Olenna decided to support the Targaryen girl, so here we are”. Jamie may have been a great warrior, but he despises killing innocents, and in essence, that’s what a lot of these soldiers are -men forced to fight for the ones who rule them, with really no say in the matter. The scene with Arya and the Lannister soldier boys makes so much more sense now.

A side note: Bronn literally laughed out loud at Dickon’s name! lmao

Bronn and Jamie hear hoofbeats, the Dothraki army is coming, and sure enough, Dany’s leading them on Drogon. Now, I’ve seen people’s thoughts on this scene floating around Tumblr for days (TAG YOUR SPOILERS lol), but I was NOT prepared for how visually horrifying it truly was.

Another very important side note: the Khaleesi theme song that’s usually played for most of Dany’s inspiring scenes, has been given a VERY ominous twist. Go back and listen. It’s an important detail that many of you might have missed. 😉

The Lannister army scrambles to make a barrier of shields and Dany literally blows them away, ordering Drogon to dracarys the shit out of them. The Dothraki break through, and while they’re keeping the soldiers busy, Dany rides Drogon up the wagon line, literally torching all the wagons filled with food! WTF??

They have the giant crossbow with them, and Jamie tells Bronn he has to wield it, because you need two hands. Probably thinking that he doesn’t get paid well enough for this bullshit, Bronn races for the weapon, but a Dothraki develops a hard-on for him and gives chase through the burning camp. Bronn loses his horse and his gold, but makes it to the weapon.  Finally riding himself of his Dothraki admirer, he searches the smoke filled sky for Drogon, as Tyrion looks down at the carnage from an overlooking cliff. He has what I perceive to be a regretfully sad/shocked face, as equally sad music plays in the background. The Dothraki warrior beside him comments that “his people can’t fight”.

They zoom in on Jamie watching the soldiers around him burning to death, and then Drogon reappears and is headed straight for him. He yells for his men to take cover, as Bronn releases an arrow and just barely misses the dragon. He reloads, as Dany zeroes in on him, ordering dracarys as Bronn lets the next arrow fly and it hits Drogon under the wing, I think? Drogon is injured, but recovers just in time to stop in front of the weapon and bathe him in fire, as Bronn dives out of harms way.

Drogon lands and smashes the weapon with his tail, and Dany dismounts to pull the spear from him. Jamie sees an opportunity to take Dany out, and like a gallant knight, races towards her, while Tyrion watches from the cliff, pleading for him not to do it. NOT because he cares about Dany -no, his fear is all for his brother here, I’m sure of it.

Unfortunately, Dani and Drogon see him before he gets close enough, and dracarys again -but Bronn leaps out and knocks Jamie off his horse and they both fall into the water and sink below the surface.

The episode ends with Jamie in heavy armor, sinking like a rock to the bottom of the lake.

No guys, Jamie is not dead. Bronn isn’t wearing heavy armor and Bronn will save him. I promise. Jamie’s story isn’t over yet -he’s got a very important role to play in the coming battle ….

A few things to point out that should have been glaringly obvious:

  • Dany didn’t take Jon’s advice. If any of you have any doubts on dark!dany, you can toss them out the window -this episode was in NO WAY intent upon bathing her in a good light.
  • Tyrion is going to jump sides really soon -and probably Varys, too.
  • Dany just burned most -if not ALL of the harvest, and now we understand the emphasis on food this episode, and the parallel of Sansa who, ya know -actually gives a fuck about feeding her people.

I have more thoughts on this episode that I’ll share tomorrow, but I know you’ve all been waiting for this a long time. What can I say? I’m thorough, I’m sorry! Thanks for tuning in, and I’ll see you next week with more GoT Afterthoughts.

Reunited (Ahkmenrah x Reader)

A/N: This is the last chapter to my Ahkmenrah serie. (A maid for Ahkmenrah, Unexpected, Gone) Make sure to check the other writings if you haven’t read them yet. Enjoy!

Three years. It had been three years since Ahkmenrah had last seen, kissed and held his lover. Those three years without you were the most painful and agonizing years that he had experienced. There had been no second that he was not thinking about you. His mind was constantly consumed with thoughts about where you had been and if you where okay. And the baby? Was it doing fine as well? Ahkmenrah wished he would know the answers to his questions. Since your leaving, there had developed a big questioning mark in Ahkmenrah’s head. Why did you go? Why did you leave him behind?

Once the young prince found out about your absence on that day three years ago, he sent a troop of his guardians in order to search for you in the entire city. But unfortunately, they had no luck. Ahkmenrah himself went to your parents’ house, kneeling down in front of them in desperation, a prince on his knees asking them about your whereabouts. But neither your parents had an idea. They were as clueless as Ahkmenrah was. But to be honest, they had been very surprised as they found out that their daughter was secretly dating the royal man in front of them. They didn’t even expect that Ahkmenrah developed some interest in you. Your mother was crying the whole time, worry consumed the poor woman because you left without saying goodbye and without telling them where you were heading.

Ahkmenrah promised them to find you and bring you back home where you belonged. You belonged to him, staying by his side. That was what you were supposed to do. Not leaving him in deep oblivion and a broken heart.

The guardians were looking for you for weeks. There was no corner, no alley and no street they were missing. They even interrogated the people in the city, asking them if they had seen or heard anything. Ahkmenrah was so determined to find you, cost it what it wants. He wanted you back. He was pressured to do things that he was no fan of. He threatened his men not to come back to the palace if they had not found you. He had no power to see his guardians coming back with empty hands. However, the more time it took for the search, the more hopeless Ahkmenrah became. Sending letters to other cities were his last hope but even those had not brought any luck.

The young prince always locked himself in his chamber, refusing to come out. It had been his only safe heaven because in there he still felt your presence. So many memories had been made between those for walls. Secret meetings at midnight, sweet and passionate love making sessions and pillow talking afterwards until the sun would rise and you were obligated to go were something you two were doing on regular basis. Ahkmenrah showed you both sides of emotional and physical love. He loved and he cared. He never failed to show these. And he was wondering how you could just throw all of this away. The worse thing was also that you tore him away from his child. He had no chance to hold his child in his arms and admire the creature that you two have created with love. He would probably never get the opportunity because his child was now a grown three year old. Three years. He missed three years of its life.

He was not sure how he should react. One the one side he was mad, beyond mad. He could have set up the entire city in flames. His body was filled with so much rage. But on the other side he understood. You were probably too afraid and saw this as the only way to escape a punishment.

But Ahkmenrah would have done everything to protect you. Hell, he would have sacrificed himself for your well-being. He just needed this chance and you didn’t give it to him. You gave him no possibility of talking things through.

***

Ahkmenrah stood on his balcony, his eyes observing the life full city in front of him. Again he was thinking about you and wondered if you had come back without his knowing. Something in him told him that you were there, somewhere on the streets of Thebes. He just was not sure if he should listen to this voice. He had given up hoping a long time ago.

A knock on the glass door threw him out of his thoughtful state. As Ahkmenrah turned around, his eyes meet the gentle ones of his mother, Queen Shepseheret. The queen you had worked for. The beautiful woman joined her young son, taking a place beside him. Laying her head gently on his shoulders, she wrapped one arm around his waist. A gesture of comfort that the young prince needed. She always knew when Ahkmenrah was distracted with you again and she had provided him so much comfort in the last three years.

“How are you, my son?” She asked even though she knew the answer. She could feel the immense pain that he went through. A mother’s instinct, that was what it was.

Ahkmenrah only shrugged his shoulders. His mother sighed.

“My dear son, Ahkmenrah, it pains my heart to see you in sorrow. You’ve been hurt enough for three years, don’t you think? I miss seeing your precious smile.”

“There is nothing to smile for anymore, mother.” He mumbled.

“Of course there is! There are so many things that are worth to smile about, my son. But you don’t see them. I know you loved her dearly Ahkmenrah, but it’s been three years now. If she had loved you so much, she would have come back long time ago, don’t you think?”

“What are talking about?” Ahkmenrah growled. He was shocked and surprised that his mother would accuse you of not loving him.

“I know (Y/N) is a good girl, my dear. I liked her so much. She was always a hard worker, kind and polite. And under other conditions I would have wanted you to marry her someday. But Ahkmenrah, there are things that are probably not meant to be. Have you ever thought about that? Maybe this is a new chance for you to become happy? Maybe you and (Y/N) are not perfect together.”

“Stop it! Please stop saying those horrible words!” Ahkmenrah demanded with a croaked voice. “No matter what you’re saying mother, deep down I know we are meant to be. We have to be together. We have a child, isn’t that enough proof for you? I cannot imagine a life without her anymore. I just want her.” He stopped to take a deep breath. His chest ached terribly.

“One day she will come back to me and I’m going to marry her. I may be able to forgive what she did to me because my love for her is much stronger than anything else. Yes, I feel betrayed, she left away but… but people make mistakes. I’m sure she’s aware of what she had done. I know we’re connected to each other. Our souls are connected mother. I can feel it. She’s my soul mate and I’m not going to stop loving her until she tells me so…”

By know, the tears that were brimming his eyes ran down his soft cheeks. His mother raised her hands to put his face between them.

“Ahkmenrah…” She sniffled, overwhelmed by her own tears. “Don’t cry, my beautiful child.”

“It hurts, mother, it just hurts terribly. I’m so empty without her.” Only his lover could mend his broken heart.

And Ahkmenrah prayed to Ra, that she would appear soon.

***

“mwt (mother), mwt!” A little girl tugged at her mother’s arm, pointing at a certain direction. “Doll!” The girl tried to lead her mother to the stand were self made dolls were sold however the young woman stopped her.

“Not yet, my love.”She spoke gently.”Another time, is that alright for you?”

The little girl pouted with her arms crossed in front of her chest but still nodded defeated. Another child’s cry took her attention, and as she turned around she was greeted by her tiny boy who had his arms opened for her so she could take him into her arms. Right behind him the best friend of the young woman came running, her expression stressed and exhausted.

“Femi!” The best friend grumbled. “I told you not to run away like that. What if you went missing in this whole mess?”

The little boy just buried his face in the crook of his mother’s neck, indicating that he was tired.

“Monifa, could you just take care of Feme, please?” The young mother of two children, twins to be precisely, asked her best friend, gesturing to the little girl beside her. They walked through the market of Thebes, visiting different stands and looking what they could buy. They had already bought lots of food, especially for the little children. From the long journey they had back to Thebes, the children became hungry and the food they had packed before the trip began for them, had been eaten mostly by the little ones.

“It’s weird to be back.” Monifa said to the young woman.

“It is.” The other woman responded.

“It feels like an eternity since we’ve been last here and to be honest I have not missed it as much as I expected.”

The young woman laughed at her best friend’s remark. Admittedly, there had been two reasons why she returned at all. The first reason was her parents. She had missed them so dearly while she was away and at the same time she felt guilty of not telling them anything. She couldn’t wait to have them in her arms again, to hug them and to be embraced by their warmth. She needed to introduce her children to them. The second reason was the young man she still loved with her whole heart. She knew she broke him when she went away and she had no idea yet how to make it up to him. How would she react when she saw him again? What would she say? She had not thought about it to be honest.

“mwt…” The little boy in her arms whined. “Tired, mwt!”

“I know, my dear. Just hold on a little bit, alright? We’ll go home to aunt Monifa soon and then you can sleep as long as you want, okay?”

“Do you have anything you need?” Monifa inquired. “We can head back to mine if you’re finished. Seeing these delicious things you bought made me hungry and I’ll die if I don’t get something in my stomach.”

“Don’t exaggerate it.” The young mother smirked. “I’ll just go and get some grapes for the children.” She placed the little boy in Monifa’s arms, entrusting her children to her.

At the same time at the same place, prince Ahkmenrah trudged along the market, being surrounded by two guardians. It was his mother’s birthday and he went to the market to buy her a nice gift. He knew she didn’t want anything expensive, just a simple cheap thing would also please her. He was at many stands but still had not found a perfect present. He became slightly frustrated because in a few hours, a celebration would take place and Ahkmenrah couldn’t appear without anything.

He saw a stand with lots of jewelries and went straight towards it. The seller bowed down politely once he saw the young prince and after an exchange of few words, Ahkmenrah bought a beautiful necklace and bracelet for his mother.

“I hope she will like it.” Ahkmenrah sighed. All he wanted to do was turning to the palace and to get ready. It would be a long night since many other royal families would attend the celebration.

He turned around and suddenly the air got stuck in his lungs. The jewelry he held in his hands slipped between his fingers right to the ground. He must have been hallucinating, it was the only explanation for it. He opened and closed his eyes, just to make sure that he was not dreaming. And he didn’t.

She was beautiful than ever. A few meters away from him, there she stood, his lover, his life, his heart. You. You wore a pretty gown that highlighted your beauty even more. His heart pumped hard against his chest and Ahkmenrah threw his hand on his mouth to cover the sobs that escaped his throat.

“Your highness?” A guardian asked. “Are you alright?”

Ahkmenrah nodded and made his way towards you, ignoring the calls behind him. He would die if he couldn’t hold you in his arms again. A few more steps and he were right next to you. Just a few more steps.

You just gave the vendor in front of you a few coins and took the grapes from his hand as you felt another warm hand on your shoulder. Wondering who could it might be you turned around to face the person and you were shocked to see a familiar face that you had not seen in three years. His face was tearstained from crying and his eyes were red but still he looked handsome as ever.

“(Y/N),” He asked, his voice clearly trembling, “is that you? Is that really you?”

You were out of words. Totally lost of words. Not in a million years had you expected to meet him, right here, at the center of Thebes.

“Ahkmenrah?” You whispered questioningly.

“It is you!” He exclaimed, wrapping his arms around your body and pressing you hard against his chest. He clung onto you as if his life was dependent on this simple hug. “It’s you…It’s you…” He whispered all over again. Finally he could breathe again. Finally he had his love back.

He pulled slightly away, cupping you cheeks with his fingers and stroking them gently. He observed your features and all he could think about was how beautiful you were. You hadn’t changed much, you were still the young woman he had deep feelings for. His captured his lips with yours, kissing you hungrily in front all of these people.

“I missed you so much, lotus.” He breathed, resting his forehead against yours.

“I missed you, too, your highness.” You responded, laying your hands on top of his.

“Why have you left me, (Y/N)? Why did you go away?”

You were about to answer as Monifa joined you with a shocked expression on her face. She carried Femi in her arms while Feme held her hand tightly.

Once Ahkmenrah saw the little children, he fell down on his knees with more sobs escaping his mouth. You felt terrible for the state that he was in because you were too selfish. You examined your surroundings and caught people staring at the scene with bewilderment.

“Ahkmenrah…” You bent down to comfort him. “Please calm down.”

“Y-you g-gave me t-two children?” He sobbed. He eyed the two little creatures precisely. One boy and a little girl. Both made of love. Ahkmenrah couldn’t be happier in this moment.  “They a-are so b-beautiful.”

“mwt? Why is this man crying?” Femi asked his mother innocently, out of explanation why Ahkmenrah was clinging onto his mother. You gestured Monifa to come closer with the children and took each of them on the hand. Ahkmenrah was still crying but fascination was evident on his face.

“Do you remember the stories I’ve told you about a prince?”

“Yes, he was brave and strong and you said you love him.” Feme said.

“That’s right.” You smiled at them. “This is him. This is the prince I’ve been talking about. Your father. He’s your father, my loves. Do you want to say hello to him?”

They nodded their hands instantly, their face copied the same fascination from their father’s face. Ahkmenrah examined them exactly. Feme, the little girl, looked so much like you while his son Femi was the exact copy of himself. Both of them had mixture of your eye colors and their skin was tanned like their fathers.

Ahkmenrah engulfed his arms around his two children, tightly holding them. He wouldn’t give them away anymore. He wouldn’t leave them alone. He took in their sweet scent, kissing their heads all over again.

“My children…” He whispered.” We will never be parted from this day on. I promise.”

He stared up at you. “We have lots of things to talk about.” He said.

You nodded with your head. “I know.”

But right now he didn’t want to think about it. All he wanted to do was to enjoy the moment of reuniting with his family.

TFP and the drink code, a.k.a. John truly hates himself - Mycroft Edition

[This post is my first addendum to the drink code after being written, in light of new canon content. (I wrote the drink code in July 2015. And yes, I didn’t write about TAB because the “CONFIRMED” was pretty obvious).]

One thing that has become clear about S4 is that is false af, and whatever you believe it’s happening there, you also know there’s meaning behind all that fuckiness.  I like the “TFP is John’s Bisexual Bunker Nightmare while dying” theory (and this meta is largely based on that assumption), but even if you believe in something else going on, the symbolism remains.

We’ve seen John drinking through S4. As a matter of fact, he  is the only one seen drinking in the two episodes before TFP. Or one of his mirrors. Molly has a champagne flute when Baby Rosie is born, he drinks red wine while looking at the camera (fucky…), Vivian Norbury is said to be sort of an alcoholic… It seems alcoholic beverages were used in S4 as an indicator of John’s inner emotions.

So I expected to see him drinking in TFP.  But no. I noticed there’s only one sight of alcohol in TFP. At the first two minutes of TFP, we have Mycroft like this:

Drink code says when a character drinks whisky, they’re scared and are looking for some “liquid courage” (As TAB later confirmed).

If you consider TFP being John’s bisexual Bunker nightmare, everyone in it represents a part of him. The fact Mycroft is the only person drinking in TFP is a sign to indicate something not common in the show’s narrative: Mycroft will serve as a mirror for John. A mirror for that part of his personality that has been in charge of repressing his bisexuality. A mirror working during most of the episode and that could certainly explain why Mycroft is so out of character in TFP.

The drink code just makes it clear that the part represented by Mycroft is scared and looking for some sort of control.

So, what is he scared of? And what does that fear mean?

Chaol Westfall Discussion Post

Here we go - I’ve seen a lot of posts and people discussing why or why not Queen of Shadows was a correct/ incorrect depiction of Chaol Westfall, of whether or not SJM manipulates characters for her ships, of why Aelin should be with Chaol or Rowan or even Dorian or what not… So I suggest looking at the evidence. Let’s take a look, shall we?

Throne of Glass: From Book 1, Chaol is adamant on keeping Celaena within tight definitions. He is a man of rules and regulations, law and order. He serves his king loyally and truthfully and so long as that is true, all is right in his world. He has given up his family and his title for the honor of serving his king. A criminal, an assassin, a slave from Endovier shouldn’t change that.

“You’re a criminal. I’m Captain of the Royal Guard. I’m not obligated to bestow any kindness or conversation upon you. Be grateful we don’t keep you locked up in the wagon.” p. 26

“You like to read? …. I didn’t know assassins liked to read,” p. 55

“It isn’t your place to write to the Crown Prince.”
She gave him a simpering smile and took a bite of ham. “He could have ignored the letter. And besides, I’m his Champion. Not everyone feels obligated to be as nasty to me as you do.”
“You’re an assassin.” p. 78

“Enthralled by the Princess Nehemia?” The words were barely distinguishable from her chewing.
“That headstrong girl?” ….
“And what’s wrong with headstrong girls?” she pressed. “Other than the fact that they’re not wooden-headed ninnies who can only open their mouths to give orders and gossip?”
“I just prefer a certain type of woman.”
“And what type of woman is that?”
“Not an arrogant assassin.”
She pouted. “Suppose I wasn’t an assassin. Would you fancy me then?”
“No.” p. 101-102.

“Are you enjoying looking at my scars?”
He sucked on his lower lip for a moment. “When did you get those?” She knew he meant the three enormous lines that ran down her back.
“When do you think?” she said. He didn’t reply, …. “Those three, I received my first day in Endovier.”
What did you do to deserve it?” p. 121

“Are you honestly so blind that you can’t see why we can’t allow this?”
“’Can’t allow’ - you’re just afraid of me!”
“Don’t flatter yourself.”
“You think I want to go back to Endovier?” she hissed. “You think I’m not aware of the fact that if I flee, I’ll be hunted down for the rest of my life? You think I don’t know why I vomit when I run in the morning? My body is a wreck. I need to spend these extra hours here, and you shouldn’t punish me for it!”
“I’m not going to pretend to know how a criminal mind works.” p. 136

“By the Wyrd, Dorian! She’s an assassin. Please, please tell me you haven’t been here before.” Dorian couldn’t help his smirk. “I don’t even want an explanation. Just get out, you reckless idiot. Get out.” p. 179

“She was a criminal - a prodigy at killing, a Queen of the Underworld - and yet… yet she was just a girl, sent at seventeen to Endovier.

While it terrified him to see her down there, a hand’s breadth from Dorian’s unprotected throat, what terrified him even more was that he trusted her. And he didn’t know what that meant about himself.” p. 264

“Well? Do I need to lecture you about how stupid it was to sneak into the ball, or can I just ask you to dance with me instead?”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Chaol said.
“Why?” they asked in unison.
“Because it attracts too much attention, that’s why.” Celaena rolled her eyes and Chaol glared at her. “Do I have to remind you who you are?”
“No. You remind me every day,” she retorted.” p.294

He really does love to label her, but you can see where he slowly starts to evolve in his opinion of her. He starts to admire her, to like her, to trust her. Of course, that trust is what scares him most. Because of his duty. Because of his loyalty. He must put that before all else, and if that were in question, he would lost the very foundation of himself. And yet, he begins to trust her enough around Dorian that he isn’t petrified that she’ll kill him. He begins to see her. By the end of the book, they’re friends. Quickly becoming more.

“Are you still acting like the King’s Champion, or are you back to being Celaena?” p. 11

“He’d been realizing it more and more recently - how much he hated it when she left him behind. How he hated her setting off on those cured missions and not contacting him for days or weeks. …. He’d killed Cain at the duel. Killed him to save her. Part of him didn’t regret it; part of him would do it again in a heartbeat. But the other part still woke him up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat that felt too much like Cain’s blood.” p. 23

“There was a line between them. The king might not think twice about their friendship, but crossing that final line could be deadly for both of them; it could make the king question his loyalty, his position, everything
And if it ever came down to having to choose between his king and Celaena… He prayed to the Wyrd that he’d never be faced with that decision.” p. 25

“You’re the greatest assassin in Eriliea, and yet you can’t stand watch for a few hours?” p. 132

Dorian and the king were where his loyalty lay. Without his loyalty, he was no one. Without it, he’d given up his family, his title, for nothing.” p. 150

“And he wouldn’t tell the princess - or Celaena. Just because he was friendly with Nehemia, just because she was Celaena’s friend, it didn’t change anything. While he knew that Celaena would be furious that he didn’t tell her, he was the Captain of the Guard. He had fought and sacrificed nearly as much as Celaena had to get his position. He’d let her get too close by asking her to dance - he’d let himself get too close.” p. 151

“Chaol didn’t tell Celaena what the king had said, though part of him twisted until it hurt. The king wouldn’t hurt Nehemia - not when she was such a public and well-liked figure. Not when he’d warned Chaol about the anonymous threat to Nehemia’s life. ….. Celaena knowing or not knowing made now difference, he told himself as he lay curled around her in his bed. Even if Celaena knew, even if she told Nehemia, it wouldn’t stop the conversation from taking place, and it wouldn’t make the nameless threat go away. No, it would just make things worse if they knew - worse for all of them.” p. 211

“He’d kill any man who hurt Celaena; and if the king ever gave him the order to dispatch her, then he’d plunge his sword into his own heart before he would obey.” p. 211

“His soul was bound to hers by some unbreakable chain. He snorted, imagining what his father would think when he learned that Chaol had taken Adarlan’s Assassin for his wife.” p. 211

“If she’s part of your group,” Celaena ground out, “then where is she?”
Archer drew his sword and pointed it at Chaol. “Ask him.”
A sharp pain twisted in her gut. “What is he talking about?” she asked Chaol.
But Chaol was staring at Archer. “I don’t know.”
….
“I knew about the anonymous threat to Nehemia’s life, yes. But I was told that she would be questioned by the king, not me.” p. 225-226

“Let me give her my cloak,” Dorian said, reaching to unfasten it.
“Don’t,” Chaol said quietly. His face was still bleeding. She’d gouged four lines across his cheek with her nails. Her nails. Gods above. “I don’t trust her with anything in there except hay.” p. 236

“Regardless of what territory her parents had lorded over, if Celaena ever took up the mantle she’d lost, and if Terrasen ever got to its feet…
Then Celaena could become a powerhouse - potentially capable of standing against Adarlan. And that made Celaena more than just his enemy.
It made her the greatest threat he’d ever encountered.
” p. 294

“If you feel the way you do, they why let her stay shackled to your father? Why not find a way to get her out of her contract? Or are you just afraid that if you set her free, she’ll never come back to you?”
“I’d be careful what you say,” Dorian said softly.
But it was true. Even though he couldn’t imagine a world without Celaena, Chaol knew he had to get her out of this castle. Yet he couldn’t tell if it was for Adarlan’s sake or her own.” p. 314

“And the only way she’d die a traitor would be for her to do what he feared; ally with this secret organization, find Aelin Galathynius, and return to Terrasen. This was a hint that she had no intention of doing that. She had no plans to reclaim her lost title, and posed no threat to Adarlan or Dorian. He’d been wrong. Yet again, he’d been wrong.” p. 323

“Because she wasn’t human, Chaol realized, gaping up at her from where he still crouched over Fleetfoot.
No - she wasn’t human at all.
Celaena was Fae.” p. 379

“She was conscious, but was a dead weight in the captain’s arms as he dragged her across the ground. Once they were over the border, he dropped her as though she were made of flame, and Celaena lay panting on the stones.” p. 382

“Chaol shifted his boot against the step to warn her that he was there. How much of her Fae senses did she retain when she looked like a human?” p. 390

“For a heartbeat, he wondered if she would kill him, too - just for being there, for seeing the dark truth of her.” p. 390

His fingers grazed her cheeks, warming her chilled skin. “Fae, assassin - no matter what you are, I - “
“Don’t.” She stepped back. “Don’t say it.” p. 394

“Celaena was Fae, and heir to a power she couldn’t control. Even if she couldn’t shift, if anyone ever discovered what she was…
It explained why she was so terrified of the king, why she never said anything about where she’d come from, or what she’d been through. And living here… this was the most dangerous place for her - or any Fae - to be.” p. 395

“Celaena Sardothien wasn’t in league with Aelin Ashryver Galthynuis.
Celaena Sardothien was Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, heir to the throne and rightful Queen of Terrasen.
Celaena was Aelin Galathynius, the greatest living threat to Adarlan, the one person who could raise an army capable of standing against the king. Now, she was also the one person who knew the secret source of the king’s power - and who sought a way to destroy it.
And he had just sent her into the arms of her strongest potential allies: to the homeland of her mother, the kingdom of her cousin, and the domain of her aunt, Queen Maeve of the Fae.
Celaena was the lost queen of Terrasen.
Chaol sank to his knees.” p. 418

This book might be the most interesting to look at in terms of Chaol’s development between the Throne of Glass and Queen of Shadows.

  • Chaol still fits her into categories - Celaena, Assassin, King’s Champion
  • Chaol is really struggling with having killed Cain, understandably, because he’s never killed someone before. It’s hard for him to come to terms with the fact that he was willing to take a life even if it meant saving Celaena’s.
  • He’s still grappling with his loyalty to the king and to Dorian - he wants that to be his first priority always, but as we see here, he’d rather kill himself than kill Celaena at the king’s command. Although, technically, he wouldn’t be doing anything to save her life from the king, he just knows he couldn’t be the one to do it.
  • Chaol loves her, that much is clear. But he doesn’t tell her about Nehemia. Because he doesn’t see the value in it, because his king told him not to and that’s the most important thing.
  • But then… when confronted with the rebels, he lies. He says he doesn’t know where she is when he knows she was meant to be “questioned.” Given his knowledge of the king’s brutality, let’s say he knows its more of an interrogation.
  • And after Nehemia’s death, after Celaena’s reaction, he loses any trust he had in her. He trusts her only with the hay in her cell. He drugs her to keep her calm.

Now most importantly are the changes we see in him when he discovers bits and pieces of Celaena’s history.

  • She’s Noble, so he fears she might rise up with Terrasen if rebel forces gained power. It makes her “the greatest threat he’d ever encountered.”
  • She’s Fae and has great power, he needs to get her out of Adarlan for her sake, but also for Adarlan’s.
  • More than this though, is how he reacts to her other form. He doesn’t want to touch her, he sees her as less than human, sees it as a “dark truth.”
  • And he’s still labeling her, he says he loves her DESPITE being Fae, DESPITE being an assassin.

But the most unforgivable thing she is, is Queen. That is what throws him completely he could still have loved her if she were Fae, if she were an Assassin. But as Queen of the “enemy,” he falls to his knees. Because his first priority is always and has always been Adarlan. Adarlan and Dorian

Next, is Heir of Fire.

“For a month now, it had been the same dream. Every night, over and over, until Chaol could see it in his waking hours.
Archer Finn groaning as Celaena shoved her dagger up through his ribs and into his heart. …. The dream shifted, and Chaol could say nothing, do nothing as the golden-brown hair darkened to black and the agonized face wasn’t Archer’s but Dorian’s. ….
Enemy. Lover.
Queen.” p. 20

“Because Celaena was Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, heir to the throne and rightful Queen of Terrasen.
It made her his mortal enemy. It made her Dorian’s enemy. Chaol still didn’t know what to do about it, or what it meant for them, for the life he’d imagined for them. The future he’d once dreamed of was irrevocably gone.” p. 22

“So that’s why you were so desperate to trade secrets - you wanted the information for his sake.” ….
“Dorian, please,” Chaol said. “I’m doing this for you, I swear it.” p. 195

Chaol is terrified of the Queen of Terrasen because of what it means for Dorian and Adarlan. He sees her as a threat to them both because of where she comes from. He seems to forget that she and Dorian were friends even when she couldn’t speak to him. He assumes that as the Queen of a conquered kingdom her first act will be bloodshed.

Now, if I can’t convince you all of his character where it comes to Aelin, let Dorian

“Do you still love her?”
Chaol closed his eyes for a moment. “A part of me will always love her. But I had to get her out of this castle. Because it was too dangerous, and she was… what she was becoming…”
“She was not becoming anything different from what she always was and always had the capacity to be. You just finally saw everything. And once you saw that other part of her…” Dorian said quietly. it had taken him until now, until Sorscha, to understand what that meant. “You cannot pick and choose what parts of her to love. … Just as you cannot pick which parts of me you accept.”
“I don’t - “
“You do. But what’s done is done, Chaol. And there is no going back, no matter how hard you try to change things. Like it or not, you played a role in getting us all to this point, too. You set her down that path, to revealing what and who she is, to whatever she decides to do now.”
“You think I wanted any of this to happen?” Chaol splayed his arms. “If I could, I would put it all back to the way it was. If I could, she wouldn’t be queen, and you wouldn’t have magic.”
“Of course - of course you still see the magic as a problem. And of course you wish she wasn’t who she is. Because you’re not really scared of those things, are you? No - its what they represent. The change. But let me tell you,” Dorian breathed, his magic flickering and then subsiding in a flash of pain, “things have changed. And changed because of you. I have magic - there is no undoing that, no getting rid of it. And as for Celaena…” he clamped down on the power that surged as he imagined - for the first time, he realized - what it was to be her. “As for Celaena,” he said again, “you do not have the right to wish she were not what she is. The only thing you have a right to do is decide whether you are her enemy or her friend.” p. 233-234

Chaol fears the change. He wants simplicity. He wants rules, law, loyalty to the crown. But Celaena is forcing him to look at the world for what it really is. It is not simple. There are hard choices to make. And in a world where things are constantly shifting, slipping beyond his control, of course Chaol - stable, constant Chaol - becomes more and more frustrated for the catalyst of that change.

“Aedion’s chest tightened to the point of hurting. The captain was just staring at the old man. It was a message to the world. Aelin was a warrior, able to fight with blade or magic. And she was done with hiding.” p. 493

This is the only glimpse we get of Chaol’s reaction to Aelin’s emergence in Heir of Fire, but its important to understand the reaction in QoS completely. He is contained. He only stares at Murtaugh. He does not let his fear show despite this being the very news he feared from the moment he found out Celaena could have ties to an uprising in Terrasen.

But of course, once he sees Aelin, after everything… Dorian… Sorscha… the Valg invasion…

“If you hadn’t been so dramatic about it, hadn’t flaunted your defeat of Narrok and practically shouted at the king that you were back, he would never have called us to that room -”
“You do not get to blame me for that. For his actions.” p. 48

“Tell me.”
He shook his head, a gap in the streetlights shadowing his face. “No. Not a chance. Not with you so unpredictable.”  p. 49

“Right now we need to help Aedion and Dorian.”
“There is no we. … There hasn’t been a we for a while, Celaena -”
“It’s Aelin now,” she snapped as loudly as she dared. “Celaena Sardothien doesn’t exist anymore.”
“You’re still the same assassin who walked away. You only came back when it was useful for you.” p. 50

Rage monster Chaol appears. His control is slipping because his entire wORLD is slipping. He blames her for things that are out of her control entirely and mistrusts, despite Dorian’s warning to him.

“And what then?” Chaol asked. “Will you hold all of Rifthold hostage the way you did Doranelle? Burn anyone who doesn’t agree with you? Or will you just incinerate our kingdom from spite? And what of others like you, who feel that they have a score to settle with Adarlan?” He huffed a bitter laugh. “Perhaps we’re better off without magic. Perhaps magic doesn’t exactly make things fair amongst us mere mortals.”
“Fair? You think any part of this is fair?”
“Magic makes people dangerous.”
“Magic has saved your life a few times now, if I recall correctly.”
“Yes,” he breathed, “you and Dorian both - and I’m grateful, I am. But where are the checks against your kind? Iron? Not much of a deterrent, is it? Once magic is free, who is to stop the monsters from coming out again? Who is to stop you?” p. 53

*moment of silence for Chaolaena, cuz that was the very last straw*

“So Dorian is allowed to have magic. You can come to terms with his power, and yet my power is an abomination to you?”
Dorian has never killed anyone. Dorian didn’t gut Archer Finn in the tunnels or torture and kill Grave and then chop him up into pieces. Dorian didn’t go on a killing spree at Endovier that left dozens dead.” p. 53

“It hadn’t even been a fair fight. Aelin had let it go on because Arobynn had wanted it to go on. And once she took out that clock tower and her magic was back… What checks would there be against her? Against Aedion, and that Fae Prince of hers, and all the warriors like them? A new world, yes. But a world in which the ordinary human voice would be nothing more than a whisper.” p. 197

Chaol’s mention of fair and of Aelin’s past killings really is just an echo of how he behaved right from the start. “What did you do to deserve it,” he said of her scars. Because he is still unable to see Adarlan for what it is. He sees it as Dorian’s kingdom, not as the force that conquered Terrasen and dozens of others of kingdoms and enslaved them, burned them, broke them. He doesn’t see Adarlan for its slaves or for its massacres. He ignores this because he is clinging to the truth he clung to his whole life - that his purpose is to serve his king and country, and without that he is no one. So he ignores the fact that Aelin killed to survive, was literally forced into it. That she killed Archer and Grave for the Princess he let die.

It should also be noted that Chaol is somewhat of a bigot. He doesn’t understand Fae and their power and so he fears them, and seeks to restrict them. He wants checks against them. He was the same in CoM, when he suggested it was her “dark” secret, when he didn’t want to touch her.

He is suggesting that Aelin, as he has done since he discovered her noble birth, will rise up and seek to punish all of Adarlan. He suggests that she is wicked, and cruel, and will do terrible things against the innocent simply for revenge. He spits upon her entire character. But, like we’ve pointed out, this has been his fear since BOOK 2. Fear of Aelin’s power and desire to protect Dorian are his two core motivators.

To conclude, No. Chaol in Queen of Shadows was NOT ooc and was not some massive plot for SJM’s ships to set sail. It was completely in character, and also rather understandable given the pressure he was under and the fear he lived with every day. His mistake was in blaming Aelin and her court - for Dorian, for the world around him. He made a mistake. As all humans do.
