Epic Movie (Re)Watch #94 - The Book of Life

Spoilers below.

Have I seen it before: Yes.

Did I like it then: Yes.

Do I remember it: Yes.

Did I see it in theaters: Yes.

Was it a movie I saw since August 22nd, 2009: Yes. #325.

Format: Blu-ray.

1) I watched this about a week ago - on the actual Day of the Dead - but didn’t have time to write it because I live in Chicago and the Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years. So my priorities were a little different than usual.

2) Anyone here a fan of “El Tigre”?

Well the creator of that show - Jorge R. Gutierrez - was the writer/director of this film! Some El Tigre characters even cameo in the film’s opening, but you have to REALLY look for them.

3) The framing device of this film (a bunch of kids at a museum being told a story) is a classic fairytale/magical realism device that can be found in films such as Big Fish. It also gives the film a plot driven reason for it’s unique animation style (the characters looking like wooden figures).

4) This film has some really great humor.

Vendor Boy: “Churros! Churros! (A bird poops on the churros.) Frosted churros!”

5) I will talk about La Muerte and Xibalba as individual characters in just a second, but for now I want to focus on their relationship.

I’m not overly familiar with Day of the Dead lore outside of this film, but I think the idea of having the ruler of The Land of the Remembered (La Muerte, everything good and wonderful in the world) and the ruler of the Land of the Forgotten (Xibalba, everything that is negative in the world) be lovers is a great idea. Their relationship is tense, volatile, and can be filled with conflict, but never is it abusive. Never is it hateful. You always get a great sense of love between these two and that’s what makes it work.

6) Ron Perlman as Xibalba.

These two wouldn’t work so well together if they couldn’t stand on their own as characters. And the work so well in that field because of equal parts writing, character design, and voice over work. Ron Perlman is a regular collaborator of Guillermo Del Toro’s, the executive producer on this film, and has worked in a number of animated project before (including VP Lancer in “Danny Phantom” and Clayface in “Batman: The Animated Series”). Perlman brings a roguish charm to all his characters, even when it’s just his voice. He’s interesting, rough, and just likable! And he makes Xibalba all those things. You’re never particularly rooting against him, even though he’s technically the villain. You’re just entranced whenever he’s on screen.

7) Kate del Castillo as La Muerte.

American audiences are not as familiar with Kate del Castillo as they are with Ron Perlman, although she is one of Mexico’s most acclaimed popular actresses. As Perlman does with Xibalba, Castillo brings genuine charm, likability, and charisma to La Muerte. As well as an added fierceness that lets you know this undead ruler can keep her own when head-to-head with her darker lover. You definitely get the vibe that La Muerte is the more dangerous of these two but also the kinder, and so much of that relies on Castillo’s performance.

8) Manolo, Maria, and Joaquin.

We first meet these characters and get a sense of their relationship as children, and it’s great. Yes Manolo and Joaquin both love Maria, but they’re friends first. ALL of them are friends! Later in the film Joaquin and Manolo remain friends even when vying for Maria’s affections, and they are friends with Maria before they are lovers. And I think it’s driven home by this statement from Maria as a child:

Maria [after Manolo and Joaquin fight over who’s she is]: “I belong to no one!”

They don’t belong to each other, they chose to be friends. They chose to be with together because they genuinely like each other. I love that.

9) A huge theme of this film is also seen in Maria’s, “I belong to no one!” line and that is the theme of being true to yourself.

Both Joaquin and Manolo have huge shadows they live in (a line which is actually uttered by Joaquin later): Joaquin’s dead father was a great war hero and Manolo’s father pushes him to be a bullfighter like all the men in their family have been. It makes for a unique conflict and a great message to kids of all ages: be yourself.

10) Maria as a character.

You get a real sense of Maria as a character when we first meet her. Not only does she have the wonderful line, “I belong to no one!” but she also shows her placement of morality over societal values by freeing animals slated for slaughter. Her father sends her off to a convent to become, “a proper lady,” but…it doesn’t really work. At least, she doesn’t become his definition of proper. She is loving, kind, sweet, but fiercely independent and someone who follows her heart above all else. Zoe Saldana voices Maria, and breathes such wonderful life into the character you forget she’s acting. Everything about Maria just feel so real it’s amazing.

11) The decision to compose the film’s soundtrack from popular music recorded specifically for the movie (the mariachi version of “I Will Wait For You” being the earliest example) as well as original songs composed by Paul Williams is a great one. The copyrighted songs never feel out of place and don’t distract from the plot, instead playing perfectly into the emotion of the scene. And the original songs are made for the moments which are purely story and pure character, so they could not possibly be represented by something which was already written because this story hasn’t existed before.

12) Manolo!

All the characters in this film are written with such life and depth that lead character Manolo couldn’t POSSIBLY be an exception. He has skills as a bullfighter, but is deeply conflicted by his duty to his family and his duty to his heart. But it’s all guided by love, something with is illustrated by the inscription on his guitar (a gift from Maria, nonetheless): “Always play from the heart.” It is Manolo’s defining characteristic and defining struggle: that he wants to be himself, not his father or anyone else.

Diego Luna just…ugh! So I’ve seen Luna in small roles before (The Terminal, Elysium) but this film makes me a HUGE fan of his! I’m really looking forward to his role in Rogue One BECAUSE I loved his performance in this film so much. Manolo sings more than any other character in the film, and Luna infuses each song with such sincerity and warmth it is nearly impossible not to fall in love with his performance as Manolo. And he treats each line of dialogue the same. Like Saldana as Maria, you don’t feel like you’re listening to an actor. You’re listening to Manolo.

13) Grandma is hysterical.

Grandma Sanchez [after Manolo refuses to kill a bull]: “Kids today, with their long hair and no killing stuff.”

Grandma Sanchez [after Manolo’s father says everyone in their family was a great bullfighter]:

She doesn’t have many lines but very nicely embodies the film’s wonderful characters and humor.

14) Manolo’s Father, Carlos.

I have seriously MIXED feelings about Carlos, and I think you’re supposed to. He shows a genuine desire to do the best for his son, he just doesn’t actually KNOW what’s best for his son. He pressures him into being a bull fighter because it’s the Sanchez way, and when Manolo expresses dissatisfaction with this his father shames him into doing it.

Carlos [to convince Manolo to be a bullfighter]: “Don’t you LOVE your family?”

(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF please let me know].)

(PS, I find this line to be the sign of an abusive relationship but maybe that’s just me.)

BUT Carlos has genuine moments of love with his son. He encourages him to tell Maria how he feels, he comforts him when he’s missing his dead mother, he actually LOVES Manolo. Hector Elizondo’s performance and the writing gets this across in a great way, and I think the film is better for it.

15) Channing Tatum as Joaquin.

I do have to say of the trio of friends, Channing Tatum’s Joaquin is probably the weakest link. BUT that’s like calling one of The Lord of the Rings movies the worst in the trilogy: it was still nominated for best picture! I think it’s definitely because you know Joaquin is the third wheel, you know that Maria loves Manolo, and so it’s hard to get behind it. And you just can see that although they’re great as friends they wouldn’t make a good couple (despite Joaquin’s hopes to the contrary).

It would’ve been easy to write Joaquin as a jerk. And although he can be a bit pig headed here and there, you understand that he’s a genuinely good friend who truly cares for Maria (even though they’re not a great fit). Tatum brings a lot of this to the role, and even though I believe he’s the only non-Hispanic actor playing a decidedly Hispanic character (Ron Perlman gets a pass because Xibalba is an otherworldly creature) he has the same warmth and sincerity as Luna and Saldana have. It’s a nice way to round out the trio of friends.

16) I can’t tell if this joke is stupid or hysterical.

Pepe [when he and his brothers are in danger]: “I’m allergic to dying!”

Pancho: “Especially in the face!”

17) Joaquin’s biggest failing is probably that he buys too much into societal values, and his society’s values are…sexist. He is surprised that Maria reads, expects her to be a doting housewife (as all the high up men do), and that’s not what his heart wants it’s what he thinks should be.

18) “I Love You Too Much”.

This is the song Manolo sings to express his feelings for Maria, and it’s beautiful. Paul Williams has crafted a quiet, loving melody which pulls at your heartstrings and is sung beautifully by Diego Luna. I think it’s my favorite song in the film and one of the best love songs I’ve ever heard.

19) Maria is awesome, if that hasn’t been made clear already.

Maria [stopping a kiss after Manolo’s song]: “Did you think it was going to be that easy?”

She’s not the girl who falls head over heels for someone just because they sang to hear. It’s appreciated, but there needs to be more than that. I love it!

20) This film never subscribes to storied cliches. It’s not like Manolo can’t be an idiot too, as noted when he and Joaquin start to fight over Maria (which she has shown to never truly appreciate).

Maria: “You two are acting like fools.”

Manolo: “Wait, me too?”

You mean me, the nice guy romantic lead, is actually making a mistake? What kind of movie is this? (Hint: a great one.)

21) How long must it have taken to put out all those candles?

It shows devotion on Manolo’s part. As will the rest of the film, honestly.

22) One of the conflicts in this movie that gets me going the most is how unfair everyone is to Manolo. When they were children he stopped a wild boar from hurting people, but Joaquin got credit because he saved the mayor. As adults he’s ready to fight off bandits without a magic medal, but Joaquin gets credit because he does fight them off WITH a magic medal which protects him from harm. And when Maria dies from a snake bite everyone blames him. He’s not the snake! He didn’t bite her! So bug off!

23) My brother and I laughed so hard after we heard this line:

Student [after Manolo dies]: “What is it with Mexicans and death!?”

The only reason that line isn’t racist is because it was written by a Mexican in a film directed by a Mexican which is produced by a Mexican. So it’s okay to laugh.

24) The Land of the Remembered!

The Land of the Remembered is when this film’s visual style really takes off. Gutierrez’s imagination and the animation department’s skill bleeds through every scene in this wonderful place and it really pulls you into it’s world magnificently.

25) I mentioned in my Nightmare Before Christmas recap that Burton and company did a good job of establishing minor character with small introductions, and The Book of Life (although not Burton) follows in that tradition when we meet Manolo’s family.

Each family member - from the brutish Carmelo (voiced by the film’s director) to grandpa Luis (voiced by Danny Trejo) - is given a unique character with just a few seconds of screen time and dialogue which carries through until the end of the film. It works wonderfully.

27) Manolo’s Mother.

(GIF originally posted by @lamuertes)

Immediately there is a difference in what is expected from Carmen Sanchez (his mom) and what there is.

Manolo: “And I became a bullfighter, just like you wanted.”

Carmen: “Me? Are you crazy?”

It turns out Manolo’s father saying his mother wanted that was…uh…wrong, to put it mildly. It’s a nice juxtaposition which establishes her as a character and not just a plot device.

28) Dude, I love this dialogue.

Xibalba [after Luis says La Muerte would never hand over her kingdom]: “She lost a bet.”

Luis: “Oh. She would do that.”

29) You get a lot of Manolo’s tender side and playing from the heart, but it’s easy to forget that he’s still a headstrong Sanchez boy. He still has the fierceness of a bull fighter, even if that’s not what he wants to do. And we see this particularly when Manolo threatens to expose Xibalba. That may not be the smartest move, but it is fierce.

30) Did I mention this dialogue and humor is awesome?

Luis [after his body is knocked away from his head]: “Hey, my arthritis is gone!”

31) The Candlemaker

The Candlemaker rounds out the trio of immortals here, and falls in the middle. He is not about the Land of the Remembered or the Land of the Forgotten, he creates the candles (each candle representing a life). He is this big ball of happy childlike energy which is just fun to watch. And who’d they get to place this super upbeat and positive guy with hope and optimism dripping from him?

It’s a nice change of pace from Ice Cube’s more hardboiled characters to see him play such a wonder filled creature, and to do it so well too! His voice work stands up there with the rest of the cast in that you never think you’re listening to Ice Cube, you’re just watching the Candlemaker. It’s great.

  • Maria’s fierceness has been established above.
  • La Muerte getting pissed when she finds out Xibalba cheated on the beat is fierce!

It’s a lot of fun to watch.

33) The final fight before Manolo can return to the land of the living is born from a wager he makes with Xibalba (he’ll face whatever challenge is thrown his way and win).

Xibalba: “What, do tell, is your worst fear?”

And then we get this:

But it turns out his greatest fear isn’t killing the bull, it’s being true to himself. This ties into what I mentioned earlier: Manolo’s defining characteristic and his struggle are the same in that he wants to be himself. And we get a wonderful song to tie it up, of the same quality as “I Love You Too Much” and it is simply called “The Apology Song”. (Manolo’s father, who’s dead at this point, said that a Sanchez never apologies but after the fight is incredibly proud of his son.) It’s a nice character climax for Manolo before we get the final fight of the film.

34) When you have no idea this is coming, it’s the funniest line in the film.

35) I give massive credit to the filmmakers for the way they handled Joaquin. He and Maria are set to be married now that Manolo is dead, and he knows Maria doesn’t want it so he’s about to talk to her about it before the town is attacked by bandits. Joaquin could have easily been some Gaston type but instead we got a sincere, honest character who deepens the conflict of the film.

36) This freaking movie…

37) The entire final fight of the film is wildly fun to watch.

It’s well paced, well choreographed, brings in all the characters we’ve met so far (living and dead), gives us a nice “dance” with Manolo and Maria, is filled with nice character moments, good humor, and has Joaquin decide he’s going to be his own man and try to sacrifice himself for his friends (it doesn’t work, he survives). It’s a great climax to the film.

38) “No Matter Where You Are”, the final song in the film, is a great ball of energy and love. But more than that, it let me know something I didn’t before…

Zoe Saldana can REALLY sing!

Just thought I’d share.

39) The final reveal, that Christina Applegate’s tour guide and the security guard are really La Muerte and Xibalba, is in classic tradition of magical realism and fairytale stories. It’s a nice ending to the film.

The Book of Life is great, and truly under appreciated. It’s representation of Mexican culture is unique in the animated film landscape, and gives the film a unique visual and musical style. The acting is topnotch, and you can feel through the writing/directing/character animation that it is truly a labor of love for all those involved. A great film which everyone should see.

Prison is Hell

By reddit user SamMarduk

I hate it here.

Granted, I deserve it.

I’m currently locked down behind massive, concrete walls and solid steel doors in a maximum-security penitentiary. I was locked up what feels like a lifetime ago now. I earned it, I did. Every second I rot here is justice, but that doesn’t change the fact that I hate it.

Better Late Than Never? Pt. 2 {TVD 8x14 Review}

Sorry this took so long guys! You know the drill, I write everything in real time so if I make a mistake at the beginning it probably will be rectified by the end but I already know what happens this epi, so, lol. This will contain anti-Damon, anti-Delena, anti-Bamon, anti-Steroline, anti-Bonenzo sentiments. There will most likely be mentions of other shows and of the misogynoir and anti-blackness and racism in this narrative. If you do not like it, do not read. OK, ready? Let’s go!

1. “If you want my forgiveness, you’re going to bring Elena Gilbert back to life” that line still makes me laugh because who the fuck cares about your hand-me-down forgiveness, Damon. Also Elena isn’t dead. So back to life my ass, it’s just waking her up.

2. I think it’s funny that Cade is talking about how Damon is in limbo, “the space between spaces” because my guy, that is JUST the Other Side.

3. No, see, the entire plot line with Cade and the Salvatores irritates me because it’s so conveniently linked to Damon and Stefan. He is the devil or the devil’s right hand man (since Katherine is the Queen of Hell for some reason, right?) I don’t understand why he can’t just find the weapon himself or get someone else to do it for him, there’s no reason that it has to be Damon and it’s the problem when a villain keeps making threats “Or I’ll drag you back to hell”, so then do it. At least with Supernatural when Zachariah wanted Dean to do something and Dean was like nah, Zachariah was like OK so what if I give Sam stage 4 stomach cancer? Or hey, how about if I take away his lungs? And we see him inflict these tortures on Sam while Dean watches. Or Dean starts off the season coming out of hell and we get flashbacks to what hell was like for him and we find out how much it fucked him up so when Uriel and Castiel threaten to throw him back into hell, it’s an actual real threat because we’ve seen the effects and why he would be scared. This whole thing with Damon is like … every time Cade says he’ll send Damon to hell I’m like motherfucker, no you’re not or you would’ve DONE did it by now, stop.

4. Kat and Paul look gorgeous together, like I just … seriously, they’re really beautiful people.

5. Bonnie being able to see Enzo is like Jeremy being able to see Bonnie and Elena hallucinating Damon. I’m bored.

6. Lol I’m sorry, that picture of Caroline and Stefan, their smiles are so tight.

7. I find it interesting that nearly every time Stefan is going to leave town or stays in town it’s because of Elena. He comes back to MF to meet Elena. In 1x09 he says he’s going to leave town to protect her but he stays because in 1x10 she says she loves him and because Logan Fell had just become a vampire. In 3x21 he tells Damon that if Elena chooses Damon he’ll leave town, he stays because Elena became a vampire and because she chose him. In 4x23 he’s going to leave town because Elena chose Damon. And now in 8x14 he’s going to leave town but Elena is in trouble so he stays. In 5x09 Katherine even made it a point to tell Stefan that he stays in MF for Elena.

8. Caroline, isn’t it a bit premature to tell your toddler children that you might not marry Stefan?

9. LOL I do find it a bit weird that Kai would be singing at karaoke but it’s made up for the fact that I could listen to Chris’ voice for hours and Paul’s facial expression as Stefan watches Kai sing is HILARIOUS. OMG.

10. I like seeing Paul and Chris interact, they work really well and really easily together although I don’t feel like I’m watching Stefan and Kai, I feel like I’m watching a visual representation of a Chris/Paul tweet conversation but it’s entertaining.

11. Hmm, the show is doing some pretty tight close ups on Kai and Stefan, they almost shoot them the way they shoot Klefan, I wonder if Klaus would be jealous.

12. I was literally like “why the fuck isn’t Damon coming to save his human brother from being stabbed” and then Stefan says, “What took you so long? and Damon says he went to put in a song. I get that’s supposed to be funny but seriously it just once again shows how fucking thoughtless Damon is, like you went to put in a song when your human brother was going to head to head with a psychopath heretic from hell? Fuck you, Damon.

13. Stefan didn’t actually say that he wants to figure out if he wants to be with Caroline, though, he legit said I need to figure out who I am and I need to do it alone. Like whatever, Caroline.

14. Also where are the twins if neither she nor Alaric are watching them in this scene? Like if they’re setting shit on fire because of temper tantrums and are literally prone to blowing each other up now, I would be around them all the time.

15. I do like how Kai is like hey, hey! Maybe you should stop talking about your love life and wonder wtf is happening with your kids? I mean I could help.

16. BE is basically DE.

17. I like how Stefan has, like, an actual plan to kill Cade but if you’re going to kill him, will you not slash his arm and punch him and make witty remarks, can you just stab him?

18. Because you see what happens, Alaric’s cell phone rings and he stops ringing the all important bell.

19. Really? Did they really make Stefan go, “DIE” as he’s trying to kill Cade? I wonder if Paul was like, do I really have to say this though? Can’t you give a line like that to Ian?

20. Oh so Damon killed himself to save Stefan and Elena. I mean I guess. He comes back to life anyway.

21. They’re making Kai really petty, like really, he’s this obsessed with killing two toddlers?

22. What does being psychic have to do with knowing Damon can hear him.

23. I can’t believe there’s a literal fight for Damon’s soul. OMG.

24. *SPOILERS FOR OUTLANDER* So there’s this show/book called Outlander about many things but at the centre of it, there’s a love story between Jamie and Claire and throughout the series, Jamie makes these declarations of love to Claire and says he’ll do anything for her, that he’ll be her shield, he’ll die for her etc. and there’s this villain called Jack Randall who is a sexual sadist and he has a particular interest in Jamie who he nearly flogged to death years earlier, basically Randall gets a hold of Claire and is going to kill her in front of Jamie so Jamie offers up his body to Randall in exchange for Claire’s safety and in that scene Randall nails Jamie’s hand to a table and kisses him while Claire has to watch and then Claire is forced to leave Randall and Jamie alone and in the next part we basically see the rape and torture that Randall inflicts on Jamie over and over. A lot of people had issues with that and asked the author why she felt the need to show the brutal rape of Jamie and her response was this:

“So, OK.  Throughout the book, we’ve seen that love has a real cost.  Jamie and Claire have built a relationship through honest struggle, a relationship that’s _worth_ what it’s cost them.  This is the final challenge, and Jamie’s willing to pay what will apparently be the ultimate cost.

Why would I throw that away?  To have him escape rape and torture (he–and we–_know_ what’s coming) by the skin of his teeth would be to undercut his sacrifice, to make it of little moment.  (It would be like someone turning up in Gethsemane and telling Christ, “Hey, buddy, you don’t _really_ have to do this.  Come with me, I got a secret way outta here…”)”

And this is what TVD fails to do with DE. It’s one thing for Damon to be willing to go to hell for both Stefan and Elena but Bonnie shows up and actually saves him from having to undergo that threat and it undercuts his sacrifice because he didn’t actually have to sacrifice anything, he just had to be willing and it’s not impactful. So I’m not even a little moved by what Damon did because he didn’t do anything first of all, second of all after everything he’s done throughout 8 seasons why wouldn’t he choose himself, I mean, it’s the least he can do.

25. “Bonnie, wake up”, Stefan can you check her pulse?

26. “That little psychic blast must’ve blew me into my body” that literally makes no sense.

27. Damon and Stefan sitting on Damon’s car, drinking is basically just Sam and Dean. Stop it.

28. So Alaric wants to open a poor man’s Hogwarts/Charmed “Magic School” omg that is so lame and unoriginal. I also realize how lazy it was for Charmed to call that academy “Magic School”.

29. “Someone who can create a safe, supportive and loving space for kids … someone like you” is that Caroline, though? I’m sorry but she doesn’t seem like any of those  things to Josie and Lizzie, she’s shrill and just tells them to stop doing things, like I don’t know why she didn’t actually ask Josie and Lizzie how they felt when their magic was going haywire, like we don’t actually see her BE with them, she just scolds.

30. So I actually like the proposal scene with Steroline, I think what Stefan says to Caroline is sweet … I just don’t believe it. I just don’t believe that everything he wants is there with her, I just don’t believe that he loves her that deeply and Stefan doesn’t get here on his own and he never gets to the romantic speeches with Caroline on his own and it’s like … how do I explain this … when Stefan and Elena were going through their separations, even if they were both doing something else, I always got the impression that they were on each other’s minds, that there was a struggle to stay away from each other but they were doing so because they thought it was the right thing to do at the time. I never get that with Steroline when they’re apart, it just feels like their lives break off and there isn’t a residual connection there, it feels like they’re perfectly fine being separated and their lives are easily untethered so when Stefan comes back like MARRY ME, it doesn’t feel like he’s stopped fighting what he wants and it doesn’t feel like he’s wanted to do this all along and he’s finally just acting on it, it feels like Damon said, “life isn’t going to get any better than you marrying Caroline so marry her” and Stefan went “true.”

31. Also, every time Candice and Paul kiss it really feels like they’re trying to use as little lip as possible, like this was supposed to be a passionate, deep kiss, like it was supposed to be this:

also people underestimate how sweet Mattoline could be, like I frankly never see Caroline look at Stefan like this:

but anyway, their kisses always look like they want to do the least possible and not open their mouths:

32. The Bonkai reunion was meh but someone told me the Grahamwood chemistry is gone and like, where? When Kai said “This is kinda hot” I believe he meant it.

and the personal satisfaction Bonnie gets from this:

she looks cheeky not like she has this vicious vengeance, like nah, the Grahamwood energy stays on point.

33. Finally, what anons kept asking me about, Katherine Pierce being the Queen of hell. I am going to admit something, I think the show and the characters gas Katherine way too much, she isn’t the baddest bitch of all, I don’t think the characters are toast because she’s running hell, I don’t even think she deserves to run Hell, she’s petty, it’s not like she has master plans that completely destroy lives, she just makes things inconvenient for the core group like *ugh* I mean I guess I gotta go fix Elena because she has venom in her system, like what were the major consequences of what she did in 5x15 to Elena? Elena didn’t see Damon for an entire episode and couldn’t sleep with him immediately. Getting Jenna to stab herself was rude but the major consequence of that is Stefan and Elena breaking up. She outted the Klaroline sex and it just fractured an already fractured relationship with Tyler. The worst thing she did was cause Jeremy’s death and that wasn’t even intentional, it was just like oh well … yeah, my bad, bye. Like she’s a mean girl on steroids, that’s kind of it, she isn’t like this Badass Villain that no one can top and OMG SHE RUNS HELL. I mean Rebekah caused just as much damage as Katherine did because they’re both petty.

Overall this episode was … one of the least offensive episodes of the season, I guess. No real strong feelings about it. Sorry it took so long to review, I hope it was worth the wait :)

Final (Tangled Before Ever After)

It had very good parts and really eh no parts. A lot of it is funny. Rapunzel’s introspective scenes have heart. Some of it feels like Tangled. A lot doesn’t.

I blogged about the latter half posts ago, but I’ll reiterate:

1) Eugene tells Rapunzel that no one expects her to get into her princess role overnight even though it has been six months. Why does Rapunzel not know basic etiquette after six months? Isn’t being a fast learner one of her strengths in Tangled?

2) The show loses sense of Eugene in crucial areas:

*At the campfire in Tangled, he unveiled a fleeting moment of regret over choosing his thief career. While he makes an excuse for why he chose it, you can hear the shame in his voice, the tone that says, “I realize it’s wrong.” So, after shedding his alias, you would think someone who is returning to their genuine self would have moments of sitting in that regret and taking some responsibility for their own inner peace. Instead, he calls himself “a misunderstood good guy” and proceeds to make excuses for his crimes in a manner “Flynn” would do; unlike the Eugene under those stars, he doesn’t see anything wrong with his old ways.

If not, then what is the point of him adopting new ones?

*Rapunzel is depressed because royal life has been her prison for what has technically been six months. She doesn’t tell Eugene this, who miraculously doesn’t understand why her new life, an existence which compromises her individuality and social freedom, is not everything she dreamed it would be. From his POV, she has a family, him, and luxury, so “what the heck?” While she never verbally says she longs to see the world despite that adventure-hungry expression he saw her wearing in the opening, he clearly knows she does. He tells her in this exact same convo that he’s been all over the world and nothing compares to what she has now, pretty much undermining the importance of her seeing that world with her own two eyes. No matter how tender he sounds, he is essentially saying her desire is unjustified because he’s already had 20+ years to travel and that gaining new experiences beyond her gilded cage isn’t relevant to her life.

This plot device doesn’t sell because:

A) Eugene has been living with her for six flipping months. He just helped her escape a grittier version of a sheltered lifestyle in Tangled. TBEA is telling us Rap had less than 48 hours to be her own individual with no rules for all 18 years and six months of her life, and you’re telling me Eugene is “oblivious” to her needs? And for six months? He claims that his 9-5 job is keeping an eye on Rapunzel, which should mean he has witnessed what she has been going through at some point in all of those six months. He can not be clueless to why she feels trapped (it’s in broad daylight). He would not tell her she doesn’t need to see the world after already being trapped.

B) Eugene understood that Rapunzel needed to get away from her first sheltered home environment, see the world for herself, and exercise her own agency in Tangled’s campfire scene. That’s why he softens up on showing her around Corona in the first place. They also have a clip of him showing her the world map to further drive this point home. He even makes a speech about Flynnigan Rider “going anywhere he wanted to go and doing anything he wanted to do” to tell us why he sought the global tourist life, too. Personal freedom and agency not only defines Eugene’s role, it defines his appeal.

Tangled’s directors basically said they are “well matched” because he’s seen everything and she’s seen nothing, which suggests that Eugene built up an innate drive to show her the world. One of the first things he ever tells her is that “a little freedom/rebellion/adventure” to get some distance between herself and her overprotective parent are all a healthy part of growing up.

TBEA omits this very foundation for no other reason than to feed Rapunzel’s drive to get away from the castle. The omission gives us an Eugene who is not in tune with Rapunzel, which is the same thing as him not being in tune with himself. While it makes sense for him to glorify his end of the new lifestyle, it doesn’t make sense for him to be this disconnected from her.

In my head, I picture him wanting to talk to her father no matter how scary he is, because Rapunzel is suffering from a watered down readaptation of Gothel’s rules. Eugene not only knows what that looks like, he saw what that created: a naive girl who was 18 years behind in life.

Additionally, his ability to read her and other people like an open book was terrifyingly uncanny in Tangled, which also makes oblivious Eugene unconvincing. His reading skills are shown once but not in the department that really matters (Rapunzel’s heart). They pretty much deleted the whole point of their connection in favor of plot drivers. It’s an interesting relationship blockade, but it’s not Eupunzel relationship canon, and in the midst of it, TBEA fails to incorporate the benefits of Eugene’s con artist psychology.

*There’s a touch of flanderization in the comical relief department. Eugene’s immaturity is almost laid on thicker than I recall. The weird lack of togetherness (I thought he should’ve mentioned how “the story of how he died” was really the beginning of his and Rapunzel’s new lives together instead of bellowing, “heaven,” and the songs don’t give me a sense of taking on the journey together) makes him come off self-centered. To overcompensate for it, the show attempts to drop fluff to please some fans in the ship’s fanbase. The worst part is Cassandra goes out of her way to tell Eugene he’s being self-centered, as if to remind us that Eugene’s current perspective of Rapunzel’s feelings is more of a plot driver than a take on an in-character post-canon portrayal.

*Why is he so comfortable with proposing to Rapunzel if the king and some of the guests are sending “we don’t fully accept you yet, sonny” airs? 🤔 If canon Eugene sensed even the slightest ambivalence from her father, I don’t think he’d be confident about surprising Frederic.

*I also think it’s weird that he’s 26 and so romantically adolescent here. He is pushing an 18 year old girl who hasn’t even lived her life or grown up yet to marry him and settle down with him in a castle forever. I know Tangled implied that he was the jumper in the marriage field, but I don’t think he wouldn’t let her have a chance to live and grow first. If he was a Disney Princess this rushed attitude would get a lot of criticism and less, “aw, that’s cute.” I honestly thought canon Eugene would act like more of an adult about it by recognizing how much maturing Rapunzel needs to do because she’s 8 years younger than him and lived in a tower for 18 years, rational stuff that’s in your face. Rational stuff practical Eugene would say.

In conclusion, Eugene can have all of the feelings he has in TBEA while not being oblivious to Rapunzel’s. Like this: “This is what I want, but I totally get what she needs without her saying a word….yet that doesn’t change the fact that I feel this limbo inside because I want something different right now.”

2) Rapunzel’s King Triton daddy doesn’t match the man I saw tiny yet telling glimpses of in the movie or the short film; it’s easier to headcanon her mother as the matriarch. Again, withholding physical affection, pressuring her, suppressing her personality because she’s a princess without even doing it in a loving way (he makes her feel incompetent), letting his guests belittle her for being ignorant, and exuding this outright restrained exterior doesn’t make him seem like that sensitive, teary-eyed, bear-hugging king who had his daughter hidden from him for 18 years. It doesn’t make him seem like ANY father who just had their abducted daughter returned to them, actually. It reads like Rapunzel never went missing at all.

He’s somewhat cold towards her and it’s uncomfortable. It’s a little silly that the reason why the king wouldn’t let her interact with villagers was because she was royalty, not because she had been kidnapped. That reason didn’t really become a reason until the end.

The ending of Tangled takes place after Rapunzel was returned as far as I am aware. The king lets her touch and mingle with everyone without chaperones or that strict “you are royalty” rule, so this REALLY doesn’t fit.

I was never keen on Rapunzel getting her hair back, but these eh’s are way too iffy for me to look past, especially because these flaws are what a gooood chunk of the plot revolves around to actually make a storyline. I’d be pretty surprised if a Tangled fan (especially a Eugunzel fan) called this flawless or something Tangled’s team would’ve written line for line. The general plot about Rapunzel wanting more seems like something the Tangled crew would write, but not most of the execution or a lot of the characterizations (or the hair coming back, for that matter). This definitely feels like isolated TV canon to the point where I can kind of see why this series didn’t land an actual movie for the theaters.

The TBEA plot could work just fine with Frederic being a hugger. A dad who is very affectionately attentive towards a daughter he hasn’t seen for 18 years while still being dramatically overprotective (if not for the ending of Tangled showing how free Rapunzel was to interact with everyone, which I’m still led to believe was present tense footage with present-to-future narration from Eugene. Fred could still lock her in after the hair comes back, though). Eugene can still want to get married, romanticize his new security blanket, and feel impatient inside because Rapunzel isn’t on that level with him without being-out-of-touch with her need for agency or surprising Daddy Dearest with a proposal. He can, you know, have some forethought and caution. Thus far, the project’s direction has a “because the plot demands it” syndrome, making me question what the point currently is if it’s going to rewrite some of the characters just to make the plot function.

For @butterflydrming in case she wanted to know what I thought afterwards. 😉 I can understand why you’d leave TV canon alone. 😅

BTVS 6x08 Tabula Rasa

obligatory soundtrack to accompany your reading

Stray thoughts

1) Writing the follow-up act for OMWF couldn’t have been an easy feat, and yet the writers came up with one of the most memorable and quintessential Buffy episodes. OMWF was damn perfect, but we can hardly say it’s an episode that betokens the classic feel of the show. It was a Very Special Episode, and while at its core it had all the ingredients that make the show what it is (witty dialogue and one-liners, funny moments, character development, emotional resonance) I would hardly recommend it as the episode a new viewer should watch to get hooked on the show, you know? Tabula Rasa, on the other hand, is an A+ prototypical Buffy episode. There’s conflict between the characters, a memorable monster of the week (although he is only a plot device more than a key player in the narrative), an original gimmick, comic relief,  meta-jokes, plot advancement, good music, and a lot of tears. Like, A LOT. I love this episode!

2) The episode starts with Spike following Buffy around, as per usual, and asking her to have The Talk about The Kiss. It’s not every day that you make out with your former-number-one-enemy-turned-ally-turned-kind-of-friend-turned-confidant. Buffy chooses a very non-Buffy way to deal with the Spike-kissage: she dismisses the whole thing and downplays it.

SPIKE: We kissed, Buffy.

SPIKE: We… we kissed, you and me. All Gone With The Wind, with the rising music, and the rising … music, and what was that, Buffy?

BUFFY: A spell?

SPIKE: Oh, don’t get all prim and proper with me.I know what kind of girl you really are. Don’t I.

BUFFY: What we did is done. But I will never kiss you, Spike. Never touch you ever, *ever* again.

I get that Buffy wasn’t really Buffy yet, but this is a really mild reaction compared to the last time she had kissed Spike…

If Buffy hadn’t enjoyed their kiss or if she hadn’t been considering giving it another shot, she would’ve had a much more visceral reaction to his questioning. (I can totally imagine her saying something like: “what we did is disgusting” or “I’m disgusted at myself”) Yet she chooses to not make a big deal of it, and only when Spike insists on pushing the issue she states that she will never kiss or touch him again. Which is what she thinks she has to say more than what she actually feels since at this point she’s still fighting her attraction towards Spike.

I will never kiss you, Spike. Never touch you ever, ever again.

*literally one second later*

For whatever reason, she just can’t let him die, can she?

4) BTVS is probably one of the few shows which can get away with having an actual shark play a loan shark. And how awesome is that?

And I absolutely love the fact that Teeth (that’s the shark’s name according to the script, btw) keeps calling Spike “Mr. Spike.” So very gentlemanly of him!

5) One of favorite lines in the whole show, tbh:

SPIKE: I just need a little more time.
SHARK DEMON: Time, time, time! Is what turns kittens into cats!

6) While Buffy is patrolling, the rest of the Scoobies are gathered at Xander’s discussing Buffy’s revelation that they had torn her out of heaven. This is an odd writing choice. Considering the weight of the revelation, as a viewer I was expecting to witness the actual moment in which the Scoobies and Buffy hash this out. It seemed like a pivotal moment in Buffy’s arc this season, yet it never came? My question is: did the writers purposefully chose not to write that key scene to continue driving a wedge between Buffy and her Scoobies and furthering the season’s plot of isolation, desolation, and self-destruction? or did they choose not to write it because it was too difficult a scene to write purely from a writing perspective? (did they chicken out?)

7) Anywho, what they did write is the Scoobies trying to come to terms with what they’d done to their friend. And before I dissect the scene in point, let me take you back a few episodes to “Flooded”…

WILLOW: I brought her back! (…)  I did what I had to do. I did what nobody else could do. (…) I brought Buffy back into this world, and maybe the word you should be looking for is “congratulations.” (…) I wasn’t lucky. I was amazing. (…) The magicks I used are very powerful. Im very powerful.

You see it, right? Willow is taking full responsibility for bringing Buffy back. There’s no doubt in her mind that she alone carried this out.

Now let’s analyse Willow’s discourse after realizing she had actually done something wrong, she had unexpectedly failed.

TARA: All we know is that… it was a good place and she was happy there.
WILLOW: And we took her away from that. We wrecked it for her.
XANDER: We didn’t wreck. We didn’t know.
WILLOW: We didn’t wanna know. We were so selfish. I was so selfish.

It’s very clear that she does not feel comfortable taking full responsibility for bringing Buffy back now that she knows it made her miserable. When she thought having brought Buffy back made her a hero, she really didn’t feel like sharing the accolades…

My Boys: Beneath the Surface – Chapter 9

“I also know that I’m still crazy about you.

Amelia barely had any time to react when William tightened his grasp on her shoulder and leaned forward, taking her by surprise the moment he crushed her lips with his own, failing to part them with the tip of his tongue. She immediately pulled away, pushing his chest with her splayed hands.

“Will, what the hell are you doing?”

Amelia saw the embarrassment and confusion on William’s face as she roughly pushed him aside but the intensity of another stare caught her attention. Turning her head sideways, her eyes grew wide with shock when she noticed Owen by the door, staring at the scene in front of him with an expression she couldn’t quite identify.

“Owen,” Amelia quickly got up, eager to explain what had just happened, but he silenced her with a hand gesture.

Her husband looked at her with a mix of disbelief, pain and shock and Amelia suddenly felt the worse she’d felt all day. As if the fight with her family wasn’t enough, being stared at like that made her feel at her lowest. But Amelia had no idea it could get even worse.

Norman Jayden always draws the shortest straw in Heavy Rain

Aka Heavy Rain is a dick to Norman Jayden

I know that I’m about five years too late to the party and that the Heavy Rain fandom seems pretty much dead by now, but I just need to get off my chest how badly Norman Jayden is treated in this game, more so than the other three playable characters imo and why.

Sure enough, you got a phone call from his mother one day saying that John had been in a fatal car crash, and that’s the reason Sam hadn’t been returning your many calls, you headed over to the closest department store and then to his house.

You hugged a crying and red-eyed Mary before asking to go upstairs, and weren’t surprised when your friend didn’t react to you opening the door.

Instead of saying anything, you walked over to the side of his bed, set the bouquet of flowers you had purchased on the space in front of him, before laying down beside him and pressed against his back in a backwards hug.

“You should have left those downstairs,” Sam’s voice was thick with tears and emotions alike, but didn’t pull away from your arms lacing on his sides.

“They’re for you,” Where the only words needed, kissing the base of his neck and staying there for as long as he needed.

It was back in December 2014 when I first unexpectedly came upon Running Man—a South Korean variety/reality show. Back then, I didn’t really had a clue as to what the show is about, who the members are or how they progress in  one and a half hour broadcast.

But little did I know, my journey as a Runner would start right then and there.

I once given a background post about the show which you can read here. This time, to commemorate my first anniversary of being a Runner, I’ll share to you my very own RUNNING MAN STARTER PACK it’s not totally a package, rather a list  of 10 episodes/specials I recommend you to watch in all of their 320 episodes (as of writing) if you are a new runner or just starting to watch the show.

This list highlights  the best episodess of the individual members and as well as  their team work that despite the betrayals, is still formidable.

To be honest, it was hard to choose what goes to this list as there are a lot of notable episodes in RM. I can really give you a ton of them in just one sitting. But we aim to narrow them down to the notable ones for starters. No need to worry about the other eps though, as I know you’ll watch every single one once you’re hooked. Believe me. *wink*

“What do you mean you think we should break up?” “There’s this girl…her name is Tara. We were together in high school but she left me when she graduated. She wanted to go to med school in Chicago and we broke up. But she’s back now. In Charming.” You kept looking at him, not understanding why any of that meant you had to break up. “I still love her. I always have. I never stopped. I love you too but I just…im still in love with her. I want to try and make things right with her. I’m sorry.” You starred at him in disbelief.

“So you used me.” “Baby no, I-” “Don’t call me that. You used me for 9 months to fill a void and now you’re throwing me away but you think you can still call me baby?” “I love you y/n.” “You don’t know what love is.“ You stood up from your couch and crossed your arms over your chest. You wouldn’t let him see you cry. "Get out.” “I’m s-” “GET OUT!” Reaching out, you grabbed the vase of roses he had bought you a couple days ago and threw it against the wall behind him, the glass shattering and covering the floor in glittering shards. Jax breathed out a sigh and turned around, walking out the door.

Fifteen minutes later, your living room and kitchen looked like a tornado had ran through it. Dishes, glasses, picture frames, and furniture were scattered around the floor broken as you sat on the floor leaning against the wall, broken too. After your rage filled redecoration, you collapsed on the floor in a fit of tears. How could he do this to you? After everything you had done for him, this is how he chose to repay you. By letting you know that you had been a replacement.

Not knowing what to do with yourself, you slowly stood up being carful not to step on any glass.  As you straightened out, your whole body felt sore and tense. You didn’t really have very many girlfriends, none that you could talk to about this. Deciding on taking a nice hot bath, you made your way to your bathroom and ran the water as hot as you could stand it before you stripped your clothing, looking forward to the comfort.

Apparently the bath was too comforting, as you ended up bursting into tears twice. On the third time, you couldn’t stop. It wasn’t so much the fact of losing Jax as it was his blatant use of you. You were sure he probably never expected her to come back but for him to throw you away so readily like that? He’d never loved you in the first place, and that’s what hurt. Suddenly, you had the urge to talk to Tig. Yeah, he wasn’t the classiest or the most sane but he was a good friend and right now that was exactly what you needed.

You picked up your cell and typed in his number waiting for him to answer. To be honest, you hadn’t really expected him to answer on you first call, much less the first ring. “Hello?" "Tiggy?” “What’s wrong?” Obviously, you hadn’t masked you voice very well. “I…I need you. I’m not hurt or anything I just need someone right now. Can I come over?” “Um…sure.” “It’s ok if you’re busy.” “No no, come over baby.”

“How could he just abandon me like that? I loved him as much as I could. Guess it wasn’t enough. What’s she look like? She’s probably beautiful.” Hey,“ Tig squeezed your shoulder as you leaned against his chest. "Don’t you say that. You’re beautiful. He fucked up. He hit the lotto with you. That shit with Tara was toxic, still is. It didn’t last then and it wont last now and when it fails again, he’ll come crawling back to you.” “I don’t want him back. I don’t trust him.” Tig nodded and moved his hand from your shoulder to your hair gently running his fingers through it and tucking it behind you ear, trying to comfort you as much as he could. He was never really one for words.

You relaxed into his chest and closed your eyes, taking a deep breath and taking in the scent of his cologne. Tig was giving you more affection now than Jax had in days. You felt so safe in his arms. So relaxed. So…loved. You lifted you head off his chest and looked at him. His ice blue eyes, looked down at you and before you realized what you were doing, you leaned up and pressed your lips against his. He kissed you back for a moment then pulled away from you.

“Baby, no. I know you’re hurt but-” You silenced him as you kissed him, this time sitting up and placing your hands on his chest but he pulled away again. “Y/N, no. You’re fragile right now. I know you want comfort but this ain’t it."  Embarrassed, you nodded and stood up, getting ready to leave. "Sorry.” You had made it a few steps before he grabbed your wrist and turned you back around.

“I like you. Like, I’ve got…look I’m not good with this type of shit but I got feelings for you. I’m not saying I’m in love with you but…I got a thing for you baby. I’m not gonna kiss you and be with you if you’re never going to talk to me again after. I’d rather just keep you as a friend than lose it all.” You stayed staring at him for a couple seconds trying to make sure you were grasping what he was saying. “Aw shit see? I knew I shouldn’t have said anything. Look just go home and forget about this, we-”

He wasn’t expecting the forceful kiss from you and it had him stumble a bit before he wrapped his arms around you, holding your body to his and walking you back until you felt your back hit the wall. You moaned softly into his mouth and he groaned in response, his hands sliding down to your ass and gripping it firmly. You put your hands around his neck and grabbed fistfuls of his dark curls as he bit your lip. Suddenly he pulled away. “Wait wait wait…what about Jax?”

“Fuck Jax.”

You collapsed on his chest, the both of you struggling to catch your breath.  He gingerly brought one hand down to trace the outline of your face, causing you to sigh in contentment.  Bucky wrapped both arms around you, a peaceful expression on his face as he fell asleep once again.  You were tempted to stay, content in his arms, but the guilt drove you away again. Slipping from under his arms, you quietly retreated to your own room.

The next few days on the island followed the same pattern.  You spent your nights in Bucky’s bed, never speaking a word, reveling in the various pleasures that the two of you discovered.  You always skulked away to your own bed before morning, the guilt eating you alive, but never stopping you from returning night after night.  The days were spent laughing and talking, learning more about one another as you lazed away the afternoons.

The spell was finally broken when the team returned from their mission, dirty and disheveled.  You and Bucky heard the jet landing behind the house and rushed to meet them.  None of them were too injured, just a little banged up and ready for a shower.  They headed off to their rooms to get cleaned up while you and Bucky returned to the pool.

people are saying clarke deserved to be treated the way she was, that she deserved to be yelled at, that she deserved bellamy’s behavior.

for that reason, let’s go through clarke griffin’s actions (this is gonna be long)

psa: this is about clarke. not clexa, not bellarke, not any ship. CLARKE.

1. even before going to the ground, clarke griffin wanted to tell everyone that their lives were in danger. her father got floated and clarke was sent to a solitary because they knew she would try to warn the arkers.

2. the moment they got to the ground, clarke did not think about herself for a minute. she didn’t even let herself enjoy it. why? because she needed to get all of them to mount weather to make sure they were safe. she started making a plan right away.

3. clarke tried to stop them from taking off their bracelets. she knew they would keep the kids and the arkers alive, since they would come down eventually.

4. fast forward to mount weather, clarke immediately felt like they shouldn’t be there and she did everything in her power to get out. if she hadn’t left mount weather, no one would ever really know what was happening and they would eventually give up.

5. clarke met anya, she knew the grounders could be flexible and that they needed to form an alliance to be able to beat mount weather. no one would have ever taken the initiative besides clarke, she made sure she was being heard and she did get what she wanted.

6. clarke knew she couldn’t save finn so she killed him herself, even if she knew it would always haunt her, just so he wouldn’t suffer.

7. when gustus made lexa think raven had tried to poison her, clarke spent every second trying to figure out what had actually happened. she didn’t give up, she knew she needed to save her friend and the alliance. she didn’t think twice before proving them wrong herself.

8. clarke stopped lexa when a man was being beaten to death even though he tried to interfere with the alliance. she knew the grounders were having a hard time accepting it and that his death would only make everything more unstable. lexa stopped it.

9. when clarke heard about the missiles, she immediately went to lexa. her decision still upsets many but it was the most reasonable thing to do. when clarke left with lexa, she didn’t do it because she was willing to let all of them burn. she did it because if she hadn’t, mount weather would figure out their plan and kill bellamy, all their people inside AND the rest of them eventually.

10. clarke didn’t know lexa was gonna betray her. hell, lexa didn’t know she was gonna betray clarke. so essentially, it was supposed to work. clarke shouldn’t feel guilty about that deal because it was the best option they had then.

11. before doing what she did in mount weather, clarke tried a reasonable approach. she tried to talk to cage, he wouldn’t listen. that lever was the only thing that would keep her people alive. it wasn’t easy for her. she just couldn’t see past that day, remember?

12. clarke left. after putting everyone else first and trying to fix everything for so long, she finally did something for herself. even then, she made sure she would carry the weight of everything they had done so the others wouldn’t have to.

13. clarke is the only reason why they had peace for 3 whole months.

14. clarke lived in the wilderness, having to survive on her own. even that was easier than facing her demons.

15. when clarke sees lexa again, she allows herself to feel for a moment. the anger, guilt and incredible sadness she had tried so hard to repress finally come out. do you realize she hadn’t let herself feel until then? 3. fucking. months.

16. clarke couldn’t kill lexa. not only because she still cares about her but also because she’s clarke. clarke who couldn’t kill quint when he tried to kill her. clarke who couldn’t let anyone die. (…) clarke with a still kind and loving heart.

17. clarke put aside her own personal struggle to assure her people would be safe, joining the coalition even when she didn’t trust lexa.

18. clarke chose to stay with lexa instead of going with her people. she couldn’t let her guard down again, this had to work. she was going to redeem herself.

19. clarke made sure she wouldn’t be betrayed again. lexa bowed to her and that’s when clarke’s healing process really started, that’s when she realized she had to start letting go.

20. clarke tried to kill nia even though she knew that could get her killed. lexa couldn’t die. the coalition couldn’t fail. she had ontari’s blood all over her face and couldn’t care less. she tried to stop lexa again, that’s what was important. not her own life.

21. clarke went to see the fight even if she thought that it would end with lexa’s death. she had to be there, even if it ended up killing her (even more) emotionally.

22. after seeing the massacre, clarke still wanted to fix the situation. a situation she could just walk away from. well, she could walk away from it if she wasn’t clarke griffin, “driven to fix everything for everyone”.

23. when her people, specifically bellamy, showed no regret, clarke took the matter back to lexa. clarke made lexa see that this would only end with all of them dead. clarke got lexa to change hundreds of years of tradition for this. clarke helped lexa combine both her head and her heart while making a decision. love is strength, we’ll see.

so NO. bellamy blake doesn’t get to blame clarke griffin

bellamy doesn’t get to guilt trip clarke, especially when he just killed 300 people.

bellamy doesn’t get to say clarke was willing to let his sister burn when they would all be dead if they had evacuated tondc.

bellamy doesn’t get to say they had to kill everyone in mount weather because clarke made a deal with lexa. she didn’t fucking know she’d be betrayed.

bellamy doesn’t get to say people get killed when clarke is in charge when she has been trying to save all of them since they landed.

bellamy doesn’t get to point a finger at clarke because she left. there was peace. clarke knew she would only harm that peace if she stayed because she was carrying too much guilt, anger and disappointment.

not to mention clarke wasn’t exactly in paradise while she was away. she was in pain and fighting for survival. but most of all, she was running away from herself.

no, clarke didn’t deserve to be yelled at. not when she didn’t stop trying for a single second until she broke down and even after that.

clarke didn’t have to apologize for anything, but she still did. to bellamy, a guy who had just ruined everything she had been building. she tried to see past that in order to fix the mess the arkers started.

bellamy can be hurt, he can and he should. but he can’t treat her like he did and I won’t forgive him for that.

bellamy murdered an army that was there to protect them in their sleep. he made it sound like that was a consequence of clarke’s actions. it WASN’T. he doesn’t get to do that.

clarke doesn’t need to be told that she fucked up a lot. she knows she did. she still has nightmares about it. she doesn’t need someone to remind her of her actions because they never leave her brain.

however, clarke was starting to heal. in that scene, bellamy threw that progress out the window.

so don’t fucking come at clarke griffin. you can’t.

Therapeutic Confessions Part III

The third and final part of the drabble that I was forced to make into a fic, and I loved every minute of it. You can find parts I and II here, enjoy you beautiful people.

Ring. The phone.

Buzz. The shower? Her head? Nope, also the phone.

Scully opened her eyes, squinting at the rays of sunlight invading her vision. She picked up the phone and held it to her cheek tightly.

“..llo? she said into the object that dragged her out of her dead sleep

“Agent Scully?” Skinner’s deep voice said

“Sir?” she answered, trying to sit up in her bed

Her leg was pinned down by something and before she realized it, that something was awake.

“Who the fuck, its 7 am” came another deep, irritated voice

Scully stared at Mulder with a surprised jaw before she started sputtering into the phone by her ear.

“Save it, agent. The less I know the better and safer it is for all of us. Tell Mulder to get his ass up, I need you both in DC by noon.” Skinner grunted before shutting the phone

Scully sat up with her back to the headboard and stared at Mulder’s now asleep again, and naked, very naked, body beside her.

“Oh my god” she said to no one in particular

7:30 pm, the night before

Mulder had his back to the elevator when she came in. Still, he knew she arrived the moment she stepped off it and into the lobby. He saw the other heads turn, but it wasn’t until he turned and saw her for himself that he realized he was the luckiest son of a bitch alive.

She walked up to him and he had to keep his jaw from dropping and his pants from tightening. He failed at both.

“Mulder” Scully said, walking up to him confidently in her tight, spaghetti strap dress. It was red, darker than her hair, and it hugged her in all the right places.

“Scully” he choked out

She blushed at his reaction and he blushed at her reaction to his reaction.

“Mulder, you look very dapper.” She said, running her eyes down his clearly expensive, and tight suit. He looked better than usual and she was close enough to know that he smelled even better than usual. It was going to be a good night.

He composed himself quickly, trying not to embarrass himself in front of all their spectators. It’s a good thing they chose a hotel none of the other agents were staying at.

“You look…amazing” he said slowly. She shifted as his eyes ran over her body, suddenly becoming self-conscious.

“Thank you.” She ducked her head to hide her blush and he reached out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

“Come on, we have an 8pm reservation at Jean-Georges.” he said, taking her hand and leading her outside

She wrapped her fingers around his and let the butterflies in her stomach fly away. Tonight was their night

“Jean-Georges? Mulder, how did you get a reservation at Jean-Georges in less than 9 hours?” she asked as they walked into the warm Manhattan street.

“I know a guy.” he said with a smirk

“Mhmm. Or 3?” she said, bumping his shoulder. She was glad she brought these heels with her.

Mulder chuckled as he moved tugged her closer, away from the speed-walking men in suits ready to trample them.

They hailed a cab and Mulder put a hand on her back as they climbed inside.

“1 Central Park West, please” Mulder told the cabbie, leaning back in his seat as close to Scully as possible.

After a couple of minutes of silence, Scully spoke up.

“This is weird.” she said

“Do you not wan-, we don’t have to you know, we could” he stopped talking when she put a hand on his thigh

“No, I mean. No, absolutely not.”she said, easing his anxiety

“What I mean is, this is weird, we don’t do this.”

Mulder relaxed his shoulders and shifted his legs to meet her eye, “Scully, say the word and I will find the cheapest motel and the greasiest pizza you could think of and we’ll go there.”

Scully smiled at his offer. He took a deep breath and spoke again, “I know this isn’t us, but it could be. We deserve a fucking night off. And you’re kinda pushing off my efforts to woo you.”

“Woo?” she said with her skeptic voice and raised eyebrow.

“Yes, woo. I can woo people. I used to be a master woo-er you know.”

The cabbie chuckled up front and Scully found herself catching his eye and chuckling with him.

Mulder blushed and Scully looked back at him, “I think you’ve done a pretty good job so far.” she said in a lower than normal voice that shook Mulder’s insides.

She leaned over and kissed him softly on the lips, lighter than the kisses they shared in Dr. Leons office, but equally as loving.

She pulled away as Mulder tried to pull her back in. She was not about to make out in a small car with a cabbie up front who already knew too much.

Mulder pouted and she took his hand, holding it until they arrived at the restaurant and took their seats.

9:15 pm

“I don’t think I’ve had a meal that good since Christmas at my mom’s house.” Scully said, pushing her plate forward

Mulder was about to reply, but a figure behind Scully stopped him. Scully turned to see who it was and groaned as she turned back to face Mulder.

“Fox, Agent Scully, what a surprise.” came Diana Fowley’s voice

Mulder pushed his plate away and nodded, “Diana.”

“Agent Fowley.” Scully said, nodding to her as well

“You guys seem like you’re having a rather nice evening.” Diana said

She was standing in heels and towered over both of them, her presence immediately intimidating. She took advantage of the dark room and didn’t let the smirk leave her face.

“We were.” Scully responded, colder than intended, but not regretting it.

“Well, a group of us are having dinner here as well, you’re both welcome to join us.” Diana said, facing Mulder with her back to Scully

“Thank Diana, I think we’re good right here.” he replied, sneaking an eye towards Scully

“Suit yourself, I’ll leave you guys to your dinner.” she started to walk away but turned back to them, “Oh Fox, I hope you made sure to order the chocolate pudding with candied violets. You know how good that is”, and resumed her walk towards the back of the restaurant

When she was out of sight, Mulder immediately reached over to grab Scully’s hand, but she tensed and put them in her lap.

“I think we better go. It’s getting late and we have another seminar tomorrow.” Scully said, unable to meet his eye

“Ya, sure” he whispered as he called their waiter over

9:30 pm

Scully was freezing and a cab had yet to pass by. What were the odds that a city with thousands of cabs didn’t seem to have one available when she needed it most.

“Scully, just take my jacket.” Mulder said beside her, his hands in his pocket.

“I’m fine. Here’s one now.”

She put her arm up and the cab stopped in front of them, nearly running Mulder over.

“I told you not to stand too close to the curb.” Scully said before climbing into the taxi.

“Maybe I wanted it to hit me.” he mumbled

10 pm

“Can’t you go any faster?” Scully said, leaning her head into the front of the car

“Sorry ma'am, there’s construction everywhere this time of year.”

Scully sighed and leaned back into her seat.

Mulder looked over at her from his side of the seat, “Scully, I swear I didn’t know she was gonna be there.”

Scully turned her towards him slowly, “Mulder, I’m not mad. Not about that.”

He shifted closer towards her, putting his open hand on top of the one she had laying on the middle seat, “Then about what?”

Scully looked back towards the window, watching the lights pass by and the people fading away, all with normal lives, all unaware of the alien threat or the shadow government; for one night, that’s all she wanted, a normal life.

“It’s stupid.”

“Not to me. No matter what it is, tell me.”

Scully looked back at his pleading eyes and gave into them, “You’ve been there before.”

Mulder sighed, for a profiler, he hadn’t even caught on to what Diana was telling him. “Diana” he said, realizing his mistake

“Like I said, it’s stupid.”

He squeezed her hand when she turned back away from him, “No, it’s not, you’re right, I’m sorry. I just know how much you love French food and this is the best place I could think of. I’m sorry.”

Scully shook her head, feeling silly, “Don’t be. We’re fine. We had a wonderful evening anyways, up until, you know. Thank you, I had a great time and it was definitely the best French food I’ve ever had.”

She gave him a small smile to keep him from worrying.

“Agent Scully, are you saying you were woo-ed?” Mulder whispered, leaning in closer

Scully looked back up at him and decided less talking would be a better answer, she leaned in further, nearly touching his lips. His warm breath felt like fireworks down her neck and the fingers he slyly had creeping up her waist were about to send her hips into a cartwheel. She took her time making her way towards his lips, running her fingers down his dress shirt, touching him, but not really. It was driving him crazy.

“Scullee” he moaned, right before she captured his mouth with her own

7:30 am, the next morning

Scully leaned her head back against the headboard, her skin flushed at the thought of last night. She doesn’t really remember what happened after their kiss in the cab. She doesn’t remember much but she remembers every important detail. His lips between her breasts. His tongue at the curve between her thigh and her hip. His tongue on her mouth. His tongue on her neck. His tongue and mouth and lips everywhere. Her sensitive skin was probably full of red blotches and the thought alone excited her.

“Whatcha thinking about?” Mulder said, awake and wrapping his arm around both her knees.

She twitched at the sound of his voice and his warm hand.

She looked down at him and smiled, “Skinner called. He called your phone. I picked up, sorry. He knows but he’s pretending he doesn’t. We have to be in DC by noon.”

Mulder absorbed that all, “Well, that’s plenty of time to do what we do best.”

Scully raised an eyebrow but her lips twitched in a small smile, “And that is?”

Mulder’s fingers started tracing the back of her knees as he spoke, “Ignore direct orders from the bald man back home.” he whispered

Morning-after Mulder might be her favorite Mulder, she thought to herself. Messy hair, warm skin, a deep hunger in his green eyes. She could get used to this.

“We wouldn’t want to ruin our reputation.” she replied, tilting her head to look at him

The tilt of the head and hair falling over her face was all it took for Mulder to drag her back down to his level and climb on top of her.

She yelped and he put a finger up to his mouth, “Wouldn’t wanna wake up the neighbors.” he said before kissing her lips hard.

She couldn’t wait to send Dr. Leons a fruit basket.

Can I get an angst scenario where Chanyeol loves you but you’re 6 years younger than him and you’re raising your nephew because you took that responsibility with a happy ending. Please? *hugs* thank you
currently working on.

I met her when I was in high school. I was a sophomore and going through that… what do you call it? A rebellious phase. I don’t know what came over me that day… Maybe it was fate. Maybe destiny. Or some other cheesy shit like that but somehow, that one fateful day,

I managed to get suspended.

Looking back on it now, I don’t even know what the fight was about. all I know is that that some douchebag had started shit with my teammate and even fucking clocked him. my friend didn’t…no he wouldn’t, fight him back and to “avenge” him I went after that punk. next thing I know, some teacher is pulling me off of him and the skin over my knuckles are bleeding from fresh open wounds. the only thing I could feel is the adrenaline rushing through my veins and my heart pounding as I watch him lay motionless on the pavement. I couldn’t even hear the teacher as she berated me. It really was a wonder that I didn’t leave on the spot. The typical procedure of being called down to the principal’s office, calling my parents from work, and my ultimate suspension was all done in the heavy haze that had settled over my senses, dulling them completely.

Fortunately, my parents were pretty close with the principal and while the school had still suspended me,it would be…, ah, kept  “off the record”. in exchange for that ‘privilege’, I also had ats (alternative to suspension) on Saturdays for like every single weekend till I graduated or something like that.

At that time, though, I couldn’t really understand the true value of this cause I was beyond pissed. I got in trouble for helping out my friend. I was being punished for..what, exactly? but I guess I can count my lucky stars because..that’s how I was able to meet her.

remedial lessons. there are such things as remedial lessons in elementary schools now. I was assigned a classroom and I tried to prolong getting there, considering that I turned a usually four-minute walk to a ten minute one. as soon as I entered the classroom, the teacher swooped down on me and eyed me in discontent and I SWEAR I heard her whisper “hooligan” before embarking on a long speech about what I was to do as a T.A. I shoved my fists into my pockets and stared at the floor as she rambled endlessly about what I was to do or not to do. I wasn’t to bother the teacher while she was talking but to sit in the back and behave like a ‘civilized child’ was the conclusion of it all. so that’s what I did for the next forty minutes. I crossed my arms over my chest and pulled my hood over my eyes as I drifted off to sleep until I left a small hand tug my jacket. I opened my eyes to be greeted with the most biggest pair of innocent eyes I had ever seen.

“mr, the teachers too busy working with the other students and I still need help. can you-” she nudged the paper into my hands” help me with problem seven?” she asked.

“please don’t call me mister,” I said with a shudder. just how old did she think I was??

“then what the heck do I call you,” she asked pointedly and her tone of voice caught me off, guard.

“umm, chanyeol. or obba I guess-”

“I’ll stick with chanyeol. but since you look like yoda, that’s what I’ll call you”

I could feel the tips of my ears starting to burn from embarrassment and I resisted the urge to hide them within my hoodie once more.

who the hell was this girl?

“shouldn’t u tell me your name-”

“it’s yeri. yeri lee”

I stared at her for a good minute while she stared at me back. so my first impression of her? strong. like in a no-nonsense kind of way. obviously very straight forward and for someone so young I felt really frikin intimidated.

“are you gonna help or not,” she asked prodding the side of my stomach.

I stared at question Seven and slowly started explaining the process in how the problem would be solved. she caught on pretty quickly and was able to solve similar equations like that soon after. the bell rung for some sort of break and I leaned back into my chair as I watched the kids stream out of the classroom. everyone was excitedly talking to a friend and soon enough, the classroom was empty.

all empty except her.

she just sat on her desk and pulled out a book and started to just..read.

I slowly stood up and sat next to her.

“it’s break time. shouldn’t u be out playing with the other kids?” I inquired.

“there’s no one to play with”

“now I know that’s not true. there’re tons of kids out there. don’t u have a friend-”

“a friend by definition is a person who is attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard. and by that definition, I don’t have a friend” she stated.

my mind blanched. how old was this girl?

“I’m 9”

crap did I ask that out loud.

“all of the other girls think I’m weird…just because I’d rather talk about books rather than dolls or about anime rather than boys,” she said quietly and a light pink tinged her cheeks.

a slight smile tugged at my lips as I stooped down to come face to face with her and I looked at her straight in the eyes.

“so what? I loved reading books when I was younger too and I made friends eventually. don’t let what others say bring you down and just..you do you, man”

she gave me a weird look and I can literally see the gears inside of her head turning.

“then will you be my first friend?” she asked innocently.

“sure yeri,” I said with a chuckle and was about to stand up when I felt that same pair of small hands grip my jacket once more.

“promise?” she asked cautiously, insecurity lacing her voice.

I gripped her pinky in mine and intertwined them.

“I promise”

let me just start off by saying that I kept that promise. the next two years went by in a flash and we had grown inseparable throughout the years. she’s super annoying and bratty but she’s never failed to make me laugh. shed bother me by calling me yoda whenever she possibly could and honestly, I could tease her back without her being too defensive or seriously angry like most girls my age. maybe it’s because she was so young.. all in all, she was like the younger sister that I never had. I have an older sister who had always coddled and taken care of me but I had never had to chance to do the ‘coddling’ and the ‘taking care of’ part and the mature side of me had never really been exposed like this before. it was a nice change of pace and I can safely say that I had grown to love this girl. A pure, untainted kind of love. Other relations had come and gone throughout the last two years of school but they were all…so needy.

why aren’t u spending more time with me?

why are you talking to her??

you had the choice to sit next to me in biology today but you chose not to! are you cheating on me or something?

Jesus I’m getting a migraine thinking about them. when I was with them, I always felt like they had ulterior motives. whether it be the title of being called my boyfriend or a nice box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day, I always felt like they needed something from me. but not with her.

with her, everything’s so simple.

we can talk about anything and everything. from character analysis from a great book we read to about how pissed we were about a cliffhanger from the most recent anime episode. as bratty as that kid was, I had never failed to notice that she was mature. or pretty mature for someone her age. I knew she’d never make fun of me if I ever admit having read a romance novel or that I cried during the last episode

of Clannad. she was just..there. not to just be in the moment but to live and relish in it.

or with me anyways.

we’d text every day and like I mentioned before, we became inseparable. I met her parents about four months after we started talking because apparently she kept on raving on and on about her very tall, weird, yoda looking friend. she blatantly denied ever talking about me to which her parents and I laughed about whole heartedly. she crossed her arms over her chest and whined, something that was quite rare, and turned to me, a pout on her lips. “you’re not..your not allowed to laugh!! it’s just not fair channie-”

I would’ve laughed again if I wasn’t so taken back that she addressed me as ‘channie’.

then the inevitable came.

as smart as she was, she couldn’t comprehend why I was leaving for four years and wasn’t going to visit which I disagreed with immediately, promising to come back at least once a year.

those beautiful eyes I had come to love and cherish started watering and I felt a panic attack creeping upon me because I honestly can’t stand to see her cry. it happened once In a blue moon and when it did..it felt like the world would be coming to an end. I know I seem dramatic and I’m over exaggerating but for ME it felt like that. this is the girl that didn’t cry when she accidentally broke her arm when she fell off the monkey bars a year back. the only person who hadn’t cried when their class pet had died, so yes. it was a pretty big deal to see her shed tears about anything, none the less for someone like..well someone like me.

“oh yeri..please don’t cry. come here” I embraced her tightly and I felt the small tears wet the collar of my shirt but I honestly could care less. even her parents, who had come to have taken me in as a son, were standing teary-eyed besides us. this really did feel like I was getting separated from my family.. and I already went through that drama hours beforehand but somehow this was harder than that.

I pulled her away from me and swiped away another tear.

“I promise to text as much as I can yeah?just cause I physically can’t be here doesn’t mean I’m leaving you, do you understand” I chided? she nodded.

“you promise to not forget me?” she asked in a broken voice, interrupted by quiet sniffles.

“of course not.”

I also kept that promise. I visited every summer and we texted whenever we could. she started telling me about her boy troubles by the time she became a sophomore in high school and that’s when I started feeling an uncomfortable sort of turmoil in the pit of my stomach. I vowed to beat up any guy that ever hurt her and she, in return, made me swear that whoever I dated in the future had to get an ok from her first. it was ridiculous but I intended to keep that promise.

yeri had grown to become a beautiful young woman and every time we hung out, I couldn’t help but notice how many disgusting men would check her out. I started getting more protective but it wasn’t in such a brotherly way anymore. I started getting so confused. what was happening to me?

I graduated that same year as a senior from UCLA and got my diploma. she came to my graduation and while I was technically supposed to be looking at the audience and waving to the camera that was pointed at me, my eyes were only focused on her. her face had blossomed into the purest of smiles and she was standing up along with my parents and clapping vigorously. My chest swelled with pride as I accepted the diploma with grace.

“you’re going..where?” she asked with a deflated expression, her eyes swelling with emotions.

I avoided eye contact and rubbed the nape of my neck, a nervous tick I had developed over the years. “this was a bad idea-”

“so what. were you ever going to tell me?” she asked in an incredulous tone. She shifted her position so that her body was faced towards me more. We had been sitting on top of the stone stairways railings, watching the soft sunset. I hoped the scenery could be distracting from the reality of the news I was about to deliver.

“no it’s just…now is such a bad time to have told you…”

and I was right. after my graduation, I had immediately gotten job offers ,due to family connections no less, but the most prestigious one was way out in Korea. It had an immense salary and for someone with little to no experience, this was truly a golden opportunity. I had already accepted the job offer and while telling my parents had been easy, telling yeri would be the hardest. since she was busy with school and I, with job hunting, we hadn’t hung out as much as we did in the past but had been able to talk on a daily basis. I know she was proud of me, but still. Her inner turmoil would put a tremendous stress on her since we wouldn’t be able to see each other for such a long period of time.

We hadn’t been able to meet up face to face and it sucked that the only opportunity I had to meet up with her in person was on her birthday…

“…this is such a great opportunity-”

“I am fully aware Channie”
“..you’re not upset?”
“why would I be? I don’t have any right to tell you to stay..I mean it’s not like I’m your girlfriend or anything”
that phrase lingered in the air and my heart ached suddenly and I couldn’t understand why.

“and who am I to deprive you of your dream job?” it was so soft, I had to strain to hear anything.

she’s playing with the hem of her dress and while her tone was very nonchalant, I can judge from the way she griped the dress a bit too tight, that she was just about as okay with this situation as me. which is to say, not.

“I’d do it if you asked you know”

“if you asked to stay.” I turned to her with a serious expression.

“honestly, I would”

we held eye contact for a solid minute and I’m not completely sure what we were doing. I felt like she was looking through me rather than at me and this moment felt so…raw. so real. Disappointment washed over me when she tore her gaze away and broke that moment.

“I could never ask you to do that,i” she said with a small chuckle before glancing back at me.

I can’t imagine being stuck with someone as annoying as you anyways” I reassured her.

she stuck her tongue out at me and vise versa.

we both stared at the setting sun in comfortable silence but as I thought about how far away we’d truly be, I felt my heart grow heavy.

“what now”

“you promise we won’t grow apart right..?” she asked in an unconcerned matter but her actions once again gave away her facade.

“of course. you promise too right?”

“of course”

she didn’t keep her promise.

it had been about three years since I’ve moved to Korea and for the last 7 months, it had been radio silence from her side.

the first two years didn’t change. she had graduated from high school and got accepted into USC, an extremely prestigious school in the U.S., to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. I understood that she’d be busy, trust me, I am too. but we always made time for each other. I still tried to keep in touch but she didn’t answer…

or hasn’t been answering anyways. I called her parents to make sure that she hadn’t changed her phone number or anything but they say she had.

as a surprise, I had planned on meeting her for her 21st birthday but…I’m not quite sure if she would want to see me.

did I do something wrong?

I felt so conflicted and confused…

regardless, I got on the plane and arrived in Los Angeles.

walking through the streets of my early childhood was truly a trip down memory lane. the autumn leaves crunched under my feet and the air was brisk. I contemplated on whether I should go on the quickest route to meet yeri or just to take my time. I chose the latter.

I needed to figure out what I was gonna say anyways.

I’ve kept every single promise I made to you but u don’t even have the courtesy to keep in touch-

probably wouldn’t have worked.

I stayed deep in thought and walked through a park that was in between my destination.

a smile crept upon my face because this was the same park that she’d broken her arm on.

I don’t need you to hold me anymore! she grumbled and wiggled away from my gasp.

you sure? I asked uncertainly as I slowly let go of her waist and let her dangle on the monkey bars by herself.

of course, I am! I’m not a baby or anything she said and swung-

the next thing you know, she’s on the ground and holding her wrist as I was torn in between flipping the fuck out or giggling at how disappointed she looked, rather than actually hurt.

well, she’s definitely not what you’d call normal I thought. I passed underneath the canopy of trees, the Reds yellows and oranges all mingling together in an erratic display. I spotted the neighborhood playground and strolled over. I took a seat at the swings and lightly pushed off the ground, completely lost in my own thoughts.

she’s defiantly grown a lot…and I’ve been noticing her more…but not as the sweet little girl I met when we were younger but as a young mature woman I might even consider marrying.

I stopped dead in my tracks.

holy shit. marriage?? we haven’t even gone out but I’m thinking about marriage?? it’s official, I’ve gone insane.

but…wow marriage. a family. a life…with her. but…we’re six years apart. an age gap is usually looked down upon and is definitely not going to be easy…but despite all that, I know it’s worth it.

then again,

she could only look at me as an oppa.

or be weirded out and call me something along the lines of pedo and punch me.

worst case scenario she thinks I’m joking and laughs it off while I stand there looking like a complete buffoon.

but what if?

just what if she felt the same way.

wouldn’t all of this be worth it?

I sighed and mindlessly glanced at the children running around until one particular child caught my eye.

the child himself wasn’t my focus but rather the coat he was wearing.

it’s exactly like the one yeri had as a kid. nah it can’t be there’re thousands of coats that look exactly like-

“mommy I’m bored. can we go home now?”

and there she was. as bright as day.

“alright baby just give me a minute”

yeri stood up and Rummaged around her purse, pulling out a small handkerchief and tried to wipe something off of the unknown boys mouth while the boy squirmed around.

baby…mommy..? she has a kid??

and just like that, all hell broke loose. I felt my mind go blank and all of the noises of the rowdy children dimmed down to a low rumble.

as she was turning around to leave with this child, I grabbed onto her wrist and turned her around.

before she could even utter a ‘Chanyeol’, I ranted “how the hell could u keep this from me?! you have a CHILD. when the hell did u even get MARRIED?! WE PROMISED TO TELL EACH OTHER EVERYTHING AND YOU-YOU DIDN'T” I said childishly but I could care less as of now “KEPT MY END OF THE DEAL FOR MORE THAN EIGHT YEARS. BUT YOU CAN’T EVEN TELL ME-”

“I’m not married” she murmured.

“wait what?”

“I didn’t tell you because he’s not mine. is that what u wanted to hear?” she

“I…after I went to USC…I..I just…”

she looked so broken. this wasn’t the confident yeri I’d been seeing throughout the recent years but the small timid child I’d first encountered. she looked so small and vulnerable and all I wanted to do was hold her…but I refrained.

she owed me this much.

“I..after you left for that job…there was an accident. do you remember Jungkook?”

sure I remembered him. Jungkook was yeri’s older brother that was seemingly never around. I only saw him once or twice the entire time I’ve known yeri.

“I..yeah. he’s your older brother right?”

“yeah. turns out he’s not a blood relative” she said with a bitter laugh. “or half anyways. he was..um a product of my moms affair and my father found out that Jungkook wasn’t actually…well his until four years ago. no one really knew how to react..I mean my whole life was a life” she said quietly.

“my perfect little family was falling apart and oppa’s wife was pregnant and everything was so confusing.”

She sat down on the bench and pulled the little boy into her lap as she absentmindedly fiddled with his hair.

“this dragged on for a year” she sighed “my fathers a good man. trust me he is. but he was…well obviously..upset. that’s a light way of putting it but in his..well his fit of rage, he told oppa to leave. and to not come back” she sat up straight, her back suddenly rigid “he didn’t mean it. trust me he just-”

“I know yeri calm down,” I said and finally slipped my hand into hers, squeezing it lightly to reassure her.

“I..oppa was upset too. and he left the house..and then..then we got a call that there was an accident. and..and oppa was in an accident..and he..he didn’t make it..his wife didn’t either..and there was an emergency C-section and the baby survived but were in the ICU for..for a long time..and my dad was-he was depressed because he thought that it was his fault so mom had to take care of him. and no one could take care of the baby-” she started crying and all I could do was whisper sweet nothings and try to reassure her that everything would be alright.

“I..I was 18. and legally I could take him in so I did! there was no one else and all I could do was try to raise him to the best of my abilities. I dropped out of college and just..I don’t know, to be honest” the little boy turned around and slowly wiped away her years as his lower lip trembled.

I lightly chuckled and reached out to touch him when he pulled back abruptly, growled, and clung onto her neck as he wrapped himself around her body as a baby koala would to it’s mother.

yeri laughed at that and it truly was a beautiful sound.

“he’s a mamas boy huh,” I said exasperated.

“he sure is aren’t you taehyun,” she asked cooing at the little tyke.

I looked at the two, and that unexplainable feeling came back again.

It was…overwhelming. The way she carefully adjusted his coat and kissed the top of his small head, the way she meticulously checked his scrawny arms to make sure that he wasn’t injured…

It felt…familiar.

It felt like home.

That image of our future together came rushing back. A marriage with her. The rest of our lives together.

This could be our future.

“hey yeri..would u like to go out on a date with me?” I blurted out. no time like ht e present right?

and there it was. the most beautiful of all smiles/

“took you long enough to ask yoda”

Pairing: Dean x Pregnant!Reader

Warnings: None

Words: 1937

A/N: This is my first official request (not including the requests for more parts on already written stories). Hopefully I lived up to your potential, kikiamr. Tell me what you think. :)

You had always enjoyed the rare moments where you finally manage to get Dean alone. Especially after hours trying to convince Sam to take Cas on a witch hunting trip somewhere in one of the Dakotas. You had plenty of time to hog Dean.

Dean chose the movie this time - a horror film, you hadn’t really paid attention to the details, you were too busy marvelling at his excitement - and you watched as he closed the DVD player, grabbed the remote, and joined you on the couch.

Instantly, he wrapped his arm around you, and you took in the smell of leather, gun powder, and Old Spice as you nuzzled up against him carefully. He placed one of his hands on your bulging tummy, smiling as he felt the baby kick underneath his palm.

Sitting in the breakfast area with your bags in hand, you and Spencer gulp down glasses of water, neither of you having a particularly present appetite at the moment.

“Well, there’s the happy couple!” a jolly man with a pot belly bellows over the breakfast room.  “How was the, uh…wedding night?” he asks, jostling Spencer with his elbow as he wiggles his eyebrows.  “I bet she’s a bucker, huh?” he muses, winking at Spencer as his face flushes different shades of red.

Giggling at his uncomfortable state, you take the man by the hand and smooth out your voice.  “Sir, I believe last night was, erm…was more conducted by our…altered state…than our hearts.”

“Ah…I see,” he says, sighing drastically, “We get a lot of those around here.  Repressed people who want to let loose and open up, and before you know it, they’re married and asking for annulments.”

“T-then you can help us?” Spencer stutters, his face slowly returning back to its original color.

“Yes, I can…but it’s Saturday, kiddos,” he says, slapping Spencer’s shoulder.  “No one can help you until Monday.”

Closing your eyes and sighing, you lean back into your chair as Spencer takes the reigns.  “Sir?  There was something about…uh…about a honeymoon written on a piece of paper in our suite?”

“Ah, yes.  I wanted to write a little reminder for you guys!  Sometimes couples get so caught up in the romance of things that they forget about it.  I set up a wake-up call and everything!”

“Well.” Spencer says, adjusting himself in the chair, “That’s very kind of you…but, since we didn’t actually mean to get married…”

“Oh, I know what you’re saying,” the pot-bellied man holds up his hands.   “And say no more, I can get you a refund for the honeymoon.  Just give me one second.”

Hearing him sigh in relief, you gulp down the last of your water.

“Coffee.  I need coffee,” you say, pushing your chair back as you grab your still-throbbing head, hustling over to the percolating coffee machine.

Swallowing hard, the emotion welling in your throat again, you bang your forehead against the machine, knowing that Spencer is watching but not caring about what he sees.  You cannot believe you had been so reckless.  How could you have been so careless!?   You have been careful all of your life: careful not to get too drunk, careful not to fail any classes, careful to correctly defend your decisions in life, careful to choose the right college, careful not to make your parents upset, careful not to lose your virginity to any man willy-nilly…

Well, that one was easy…it’s not like you were brimming with possibilities.

Finally fixing your coffee, you venture back to your seat to a disappointed-looking Spencer.

“Don’t tell me…the honeymoon isn’t refundable.”

“Not the one we chose, no,” he says, putting his head in his hands and rubbing his eyes with his palms.

Furrowing your brow, you couldn’t remember that part.  “Did he happen to say which one it was?”

Nodding slowly, he says, “Yeah…something about a trip to a vineyard in California, a bed and breakfast on site, and-”

“-horse-drawn carriage rides every night until the sun sets?”

Furrowing his brow, he looks up at you for the first time since that morning.   “You remember?” he says, sounding a little surprised, “That’s incredible, I can’t even remember that.”

“No…not exactly,” you say, casting your eyes down at your coffee cup, feeling your stomach start to retch again.

“It’s alright, Y/N,” Spencer reaches out his hand and puts it on top of yours. “We’ll get ourselves out of this.  We can go…since we are on vacation…have a good time, drink some wine, pamper ourselves a bit, and when we get back to work, we can remove our rings and wait patiently for the paperwork to push thru.  The man says we can fill out all the stuff needed before we leave and stick it in the paralegal’s box to be processed on Monday.”

Nodding slowly to yourself, you felt your entire body wanting to shake.

A California vineyard and a horse-drawn carriage.

Even at your drunkest, you still couldn’t let go of it.

Filling out your side of the paperwork, you seal it in a manila envelope, along with Spencer’s, and push it thru the slot into the paralegal’s office.

“Someone will call you Monday morning to let you know that the paperwork has been sent thru the right channels, and once you receive email confirmation that the process has been started, it should take 6-8 weeks for the paperwork to finalize and annul the marriage.”

Nodding your head, the man helps you into the carriage, Spencer closely behind, as he continues to rattle off information.

“At some point in time during the process, someone will contact you both to make sure that you are still on track for the annulment.  We aren’t expecting you to change your minds, but it helps us to double-check in case some romance has taken place,” he says as he leads you both out front.

“This carriage,” he continues, “…while not horse-drawn on account of one of the horses giving birth…will take you to the airport, which will then fly you in to California, where a driver will be waiting with a sign that says “The Reids” to take you to the BnB that you will be residing in for the next week.”

Nodding slowly, you sink back into your carriage chair.  You couldn’t believe this was happening.  You were actually taking a honeymoon.

After getting married.

To the place where your heart had been broken.

How full-circle, you thought.

Hearing the door shut, the carriage jumps to life as the engine sputters, slowly carrying you off down the road.

“It won’t be that bad,” Spencer tries to reassure you.  “Even if we only have one room, I can sleep on the floor, or the couch, and we can go off and do our own little things, and hey.  Maybe they will have another room open, and we won’t even have to share!” he says hopefully, trying to lift your spirits.

“Yeah, sounds nice,” you robotically reply, gazing out the window at the slow-going scenery change as you approach the airport.

Getting out of the carriage, you shew Spencer’s hand away as he tries to help you out.

“I’m fine, Reid, I can get it myself,” you snip.

“Just trying to help,” he mutters, bending down and grabbing both of your bags.

“I’m sorry,” you say, turning towards him, tugging your bag away from him.   “This is just…an absolutely insane scenario!” you yelp, throwing your free hand above your head as the emotion pools in your chest.  “I never expected to ever lose my virginity, much less get married, and here I am…married to a man that can’t stand my presence, who was forced to try and bond with me under his boss’s orders…and we wind up married.”

As Spencer licks his bottom lip slowly, gazing down at his feet, you chuckle lightly as you shake your head, “And I’m still a virgin!”

As you turn to walk towards the airport kiosk, ready to obtain your plane tickets, Spencer catches your arm, urging you to turn around and look at him.

“Y-you…you think I can’t stand your presence?” he asks, furrowing his brow as you sense the hurt in his voice.

Cocking your head, you take another deep swallow as the emotion threatens to overcome you again. “Spencer…now is not the time to get all sentimental.   With all of the diva crap you threw back in the hotel room, I’m surprised I’m not in tears by how disgusted you are at the prospect of even waking up in the same room with me, much less waking up in the same bed and finding out that we are married,” you state matter-of-factly.

“I wasn’t…I didn’t…yo-”

You hold up your hand, closing your eyes as you feel the tears start to prickle, willing him to stop before this situation becomes even worse.

Taking a deep breath, you slowly let your hand drop, sighing deeply as Spencer is rendered speechless.  You two obtain your tickets and check your suitcases, silently meandering thru the airport until you wind up at the huge illuminated flight board, both of your eyes darting around for your flight gate.

“Gate E4…” you mumble, looking down at your ticket, making sure that it matches before you start off.

“Yeah…E4,” Spencer says, looking back over at you, your eyes glazed over as you continue to stare up at the hypnotizing board.

“Y/N?” he says.

“Yeah?” you say, looking over at him, your eyes red but your tears never falling.

“I never meant to make you feel that way,” he says, reaching for your shoulder.  “I just…I was just as scared and taken aback as you were.  I mean, you weren’t too enthused with my…well, you know…touching you and everything.”

Looking down at your feet, you slowly step away from Spencer’s body, feeling his heat radiate towards you.

“I’m sorry if I made you feel bad or…or not…desirable…in any way,” you say, stumbling over what words to use.  “I mean, it would have been kind of weird if I would’ve said, ‘Oh, how nice. That feels nice newly-wedded brewery-husband of mine.’“

And as he lightly chuckles at your joke, the first smile since that morning slowly spread across your face as Spencer turns his body towards the hallway you two needed to navigate.

“Come on,” he says, his face slowly fading back to it’s original color, “The gate’s this way.”
