Everyone tells you it’s all right to cry, but not enough people say it’s all right if you don’t want people to know.

TV Review: A Series of Unfortunate Events

I recommend that you do not proceed with this review. More than likely it will leave you with a few minutes or so of, if not tedious boredom, then severe melancholy that will haunt you for several days. You are more than welcome to stop reading and move on to happier texts, something about brightly coloured tattoos or smiling kittens for example. I implore that whatever you do, do not go and watch the new series of Unfortunate Events available on Netflix, for it will surely not lift but worsen your despair.
OK there’s only so long I can keep that up. It’s actually a great show. I remember at school the Series of Unfortunate Events books coming out and I’m now regretting not reading them. I have however seen the 2004 film adaptation starring Jim Carrey, which I did enjoy.
The first question I had before seeing the show was how it would compare with the film. To be honest, I’m not sure which I like best. Both are very similar in style and quality, and both tell their darkly funny narratives in most entertaining and enthusiastic fashions. The only obvious difference between them is the TV show has more to offer.

For fans of the books, the first season of the show covers the first four books in eight episodes. For those who haven’t read the books or seen the film and so have no idea what I’ve been talking about for the last few paragraphs, A Series of Unfortunate Events centres on the gifted Baudelaire children: Violent the inventor (Malina Weissman), Klaus the reader (Louis Hynes) and baby Sunny the biter (Presley Smith).
They lose their home and their parents in a terrible fire and throughout the show are placed in the care of a succession of unsuitable guardians. The first is Count Olaf, played by an unrecognisable Neil Patrick Harris, a villainous actor who seems far too interested in the children’s enormous fortune left by their parents.

If you can stand the overly Gothic, Tim Burton-esque style and the fact that every character is unpleasant to some degree (even the children, who are just too smart for their own good), this is an imaginative, dazzling show. This is in spite of the narrator’s constant assurances of how depressed you’ll be, which just add to the show’s streak of black humour.
Fans of Roald Dahl will appreciate this saga of clever children outwitting idiotic, dastardly adults, run throughout with genuinely dark undertones. The cast is great and the songs will be stuck in your head for days. Neil Patrick Harris is surely the star. He’s quite tame next to Jim Carrey’s original performance of the villain, but his own brand of aloof comic menace is still engrossing.

RIO EVENTING DRESSAGE - Lets straighten a few things out

There have been a few posts asking the same question pop up since the commencement of the dressage phase of eventing:

“These horses are skinny”
“They’ll malnourished”
“Bad dressage”
“This horse doesn’t look like a dressage horse” and so on..

First of all, these horses aren’t specific bred for a sole discipline. They’re multi-disciplinary horses. They’ve been bred to be a finer build, to allow for a lighter weight frame thus making galloping and jumping easier, and in some cases, making the individual horse more athletic. Big, thick, heavily built horses can’t maintain up to 10 minutes of galloping and 30-something jump efforts, then back it up with show jumping the following day. Sure, there are exceptions, but not at this level. Another thing to consider is some horses have undesirable conformation which perhaps makes the horse look worse. There are some seriously tall riders out there too.

Secondly, the requirement of these horses is to be incredibly fit. Have you ever seen a human tri-athlete with a spare ounce of fat on their bodies? It’s just not possible. With the amount of exercise and fitness training they do, it’s pretty much physically impossible.

Thirdly, in regards to people saying that these horses and riders aren’t doing good enough dressage tests… sorry we eventers have TWO other phases to perfect, as well as maintain an extremely high level of fitness in our horses (and one would do well to remember that you’re at home on the couch, not representing your country ;) ). Because we still have two phases left to complete, our dressage requirement aren’t as demanding as a pure dressage test will be.

But most importantly… The FEI ensures the wellbeing of horses. They have the worlds best veterinarians, specialists and professionals on hand. IF THE HORSE WAS NOT FIT FOR COMPETITION, THEY WOULDN’T ALLOW THE HORSE TO CONTINUE. Remember, Equestrian sports are under a close eye from the public who are LOOKING for excuses to ban our sport. So how about we all join forces and enjoy this sport.
