🔥Witchy Mistakes to Avoid💥

We’ve all been there. These seem obvious until you do them.

💥 Burned hair and fingers. Practice fire safety! If you have long hair, TIE YOUR HAIR BACK if you’re doing spells with an open flame and do NOT touch incense burners without oven mitts. It really hurts.
💥 Clogged sinks. Be smart with how you dispose spells! Do NOT put a bunch of herbs or other spell ingredients down a sink that has no garbage disposal. It’s gonna get clogged and you’re not going to want that bill from the plumber because of a clump of bay leaves.
💥 Coughing fits. Ventilate your area before you burn stuff! Inhaling a bunch of smoke from a bundle of cleansing herbs is not going to be fun.
💥 Faded and destroyed crystals. Don’t set your crystals in the sunlight unless you are 100% sure it won’t fade the colors, and make sure how to safely cleanse and use crystals so you don’t damage them. You don’t want to put your crystal in some water for a cleansing and see it get damaged.
💥 Bent, torn, and damaged tarot cards. Don’t shuffle them like a playing deck all the time and don’t cleanse them in water. Also, don’t go outside with your cards if it’s a windy day. Seems obvious until one of your cards gets carried away by the wind and lands in some mud.
💥 Spells that take 5000000 years to manifest. Try grounding and centering before doing spells! It helps so, so much with speeding up the spells’ manifestations.
💥 You do a spell for money and the spell decides to manifest by having your car damaged so you get money from the insurance money. Close or make loopholes in your spells! Adding little tidbits to a spell can make a better outcome of the spell’s manifestation, such as casting a wealth spell and adding, “This money shall be given to me without a negative cause.”
💥 The house smells like weed. Research what a herb smells like before you burn a bunch of it. Sometimes burned sage smells like weed. Plus, sometimes if you a burn a herb or plant, the smoke from it can kill or hurt you, like yew.
💥 You just drank some aloe vera juice and now your stomach is hurting and you’re sick. Research the possible side effects of herbs and plants before ingesting them. Some herbs can endanger your health, so research them before you decide to chomp on them.

Beginner Witch Tips

WARNING: I am a sarcastic butthole and it shows through out this hot mess of a post. This is some random craft junk I have learned in my days of practicing witchcraft

Witch craft is not magic.

I don’t care what you have heard. Witchcraft is not magic. It can not turn your eyes different colors. It can not make you into a animal. You will not be able to control the weather or summon wind with your fingers. Ghosts will not do as you say. This is not Harry Potter. Case closed

Intent over tools

Do you think it’s gonna matter if you use a butter knife as an athame? Or you have to sub a white candle for another color because you don’t have the funds to buy that color? Or you had to leave out an ingredient because you don’t have it or you’re allergic? No, it’s not. Witchcraft (to me) is about mind over matter. If you are making an effort for your God/god/goddess/deity/elf/fae/etc it isn’t gonna matter what or how you got there, but the intent you had getting there

Cursing and hexing is up to you and your beliefs

Totally up to you if you believe that this is okay or not. However, if you don’t like this, do not go and tell someone else it’s wrong. If they ask you how you feel you can tell them it’s not your thing. If you do like this, do not go and tell someone else it’s fine and try to get them to accept it. If they ask you about it, you can tell them that you are into it

You do not have to have an alter

It’s up to you and your practice. And if you can where you are etc. If you want one and can not have one, draw one or, my favorite, Set up a pinterest board for your god/goddess/fae/elf/deity etc. and save things that you thing relate to them.

It’s not about fancy stuff

This goes back to intent over tools, as long as you are comfortable with what you are doing and using, do it and use it. I use salsa and yogurt containers, coffee filters taped together, M&M tubes, and envelopes to keep crap in. I use a 99¢ Wal-Mart bandanna to do spells on that I got from Girl Scout camp and it has rainbow peace signs all over it. Do I care? Nope. Does anyone else care or will they judge you? Nope. we are all in the same boat here.

Hand making things is way too underrated

I LOVE hand making things. Whether you are good or bad at it, it is a good way to save money, and personalize it just for you. Example: I made tarot cards out of printer paper that I cut out and wrote the card name, and definition of what it means (to me) and I love them. Pencil wand? Yas queen. DIY cauldron out of play-dough? Frick me u p daddy.

DONT EAT/SMOKE/DRINK SOMETHING YOU HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT

You’d think I would have to include this bUT
Some things are okay to consume. Sometimes if taking a certain medicine you can’t consume that. Sometimes you are allergic to one thing, and in turn you will be allergic to that thing too. Sometimes you are pregnant and it’S HIGHLY DANGEROUS TO CONSUME THINGS WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT IT DOES

Never ignore professional medical advice and help in favor of witchcraft methods.

Spirit workers

Not nice spirits can attach to people who have depression and anxiety more so than people who don’t

There are good and bad spirits. if one makes you feel comfomy, do not feel bad for asking it to leave/getting rid of it

Don’t ask your tarot cards every time you have a question

This happens a lot. Especially when you get a new deck and it’s so new and shiny and you can’t w a i t to get your grubby little hands on it and do crap >:D but you don’t want to get into the habbit of “ohgoshgollybatman I have to go to the store, okay let’s see if I’ll get hit by a car… oh and do I really need the applejuice..”  or “do I REALLY need this plant..” bc the answer to that is always yes duh

Divination is not for predicting the future

Now stay with me, it is for guiding you in the future. It can not tell you what day you are going to die, who you are going to marry, etc

The future is not written in stone

Let’s sayyyyy you do a simple past, present, and future reading with tarot, and you get a bad reading for the future, it doesn’t matter. That is how it is going right now, now you can see what you need to change etc

You dont need a fancy journal for a grimore or book of shawdows

Heckadoodle I use a binder and notebook paper so I can move stuff around. I just write with a pencil and pen, and color with dollar store crayons or collered pencils.
Now, you may be thinking, “Oh but, it’s a nice binder right?” Lemme stop you right there. It is falling apart, needs to be ducktaped, has a picture of my doggo inside and I’ve used it for school for abouutt.. 7 years?
Summin’ it up: It don’t gotta be fancy

If you forget to blow out candles set a timer on your phone

I do this all the freaking time and I’ll leave a candle out, and then here comes mother. Closet underage witches know the struggle. Trying to explain why you have a burning candle left in your room. Or if you are adult and have to adult after a spell or whatever and leave the house and come back to the candle just sittin’ there. Burning away. (my mom did this once and it caught her table on fire)
Timer. Yep.

You don’t have to know a certain language

This is more focused to me bc i am nerd but okie dokie
I know Latin from school, therefore I mix it into my spells (like some on @witchy-recipes-and-things) and provide a translation. I don’t want anyone to think you have to have a certain language for your craft.

How to Ouija

Tbh this is too long already so if you want another post on it tell me and I’ll make one and link it

Sigils can be drawn everywhere

In your phone case, in your wallet, in a shoe, under fingernail polish, under seats, wherever whatever-I can also elaborate more on this

TAROT IS PRONOUNCED “TARO”

CONSENT IS KEY

When doing love spells, consent from the other person is a must.

You can be a christian, athiest, pagan, whatever, and still do witchcraft

It is about the craft, not religion

Witchcraft is not a religion, Wicca is

And you do not have to be Wiccan to partake in Witchcraft

Sage doesn’t have to be in cone shape to burn it

I put rubbed sage meant for cooking on a metal plate and torch the sucker Shane Dawson style but with one of the long lighters, then run around my house in my underware screaming “MAY THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPEL YOU BITCH” in Latin

When cleansing

OPEN.THE.WINDOWS.WHEN.DEALING.WITH.SMOKE
Trust your witch mother who is allergic to everything and is an asthmatic, open the windows and doors.
Also, as the smoke leaves you room through the windows or whatever, the spirits/bad vibes/etc leave with it

You don’t have to believe everything you read

Witchcraft is how YOU feel about things. No matter how other people feel about things

You can have your own corresponces for things

Like I think cinnamon is hot, deals with the sun, direction south, used for healing love etc., but it can be totally different for you

Divination doers do not have to be witches and witches do not have to be divination doers

S T U D Y

Can not stress this enough. This is the best thing to do even if you can not practice your craft where you are atm. knowledge is power.

So here is a list I’ve complied :D (yes I’ve made all of these, I was too bored to ask people’s permission to add things, sue me) (All of the spells are all religion inclusive)

The Problem With Having Small Pets as a Witch

The problem with having small pets (rodents, birds, reptiles, amphibians, etc.) as a witch means you can’t burn anything that puts off smoke because their tiny lungs are so small that the amount of smoke we can breath and still be fine is 10000000000× less fine to them. Wanna burn some sage to get rid of that negativity clog in your room? NOPE. Need to burn some herbs or some shit? WRONG. Wanna burn some incense to help with a spell or just make your room smell nice? WRONG AGAIN. Granted, you could have your incense like 2 inches away from your open window and that should be fine but I mean DIFFICULT. You love your animals but you’ve also gotta get rid of that nasty ass energy and it isn’t going away with salt water so I mean what do you do? WELL HAVE I GOT A SOLUTION FOR YOU FRIEND.

0: lmao don’t burn shit on a regular basis. At most, once every other week..
1: Open all Windows. Open. Them. All.
1.5: If its incense, just put it as close to the window as possible as you can (and I mean fucking close) and disregard the rest.
2: Get a fan ready because boy oh boy you’re gonna need it.
3: Cover all of the tanks/cages/what have you, with towels. Don’t leave an inch open buddy. (No, this isnt going to suffocate them, towels are just acting as a filter to get all that nasty shit out)
4: Burn yo shit AS FAST AS YOU CAN no longer than 7 minutes because the smoke will murder your babies.
5: Put it out and IMMEDIATELY TURN THAT FAN ON, AIMED OUT A FUCKING WINDOW.
6: Run the fan for 10-30 minutes
7: Take off the towels AND ENJOY YOUR ALIVE CHILDREN

You are welcome.

Ways to Cleanse
  1. Smoke Cleanse: (Commonly using sage) Using smoke from a burning sage bundle, pass it over the item or being that you would like to cleanse. Focus on your intent while sending out the negative energy. Use incantations if you like. Make sure the plant you are burning is in no way poisonous and is safe! This cannot be stressed enough!
  2. Incense smoke: Choose a specific scent corresponding to your goal. Pass it over an item or being like smoke cleansing. Focus on you intent and cast out negative energy.
  3. Holy water: You can purchase or create your own. Submerge or sprinkle over an item as needed. Focus on your intent to help cleanse it from negative energy. You can use an incantation, say a chant, or call on any entities you work with.
  4. Running Water: Make sure the item is unable to be harmed by water! Submerge into a running creek or river. Let it wash away all the negative energies and become charged with positive one. Rainwater can be used as well.
  5. Sea salt: Bury the item you want cleansed into sea salt, make sure it will not harm the item. Leave it for a few days in the salt. The salt will absorb any unwanted energies.
  6. Sunlight: Make sure the item will not be harmed, certain crystals will fade in the sunlight! Leave the item in full sunlight and let it absorb the suns positive energies and remove the negative ones.
  7. Moonlight: Place an item outside or on the window sill to soak up the moonlight and dispel negative energies.
  8. High vibration sounds: Using a crystal bowl, a Tibetan Singing bowl, a gong, drumming, tuning fork or even your favorite music turned up loud will cleanse an item of unwanted energies.
  9. Pyramid Energy: Placing an item under or inside a pyramid which has been charged for cleansing will take away any negative energy and return the item to neutral.
  10. Personal Energy: Using your own personal energy to drive the unwanted energy out of the item that needs cleansing. It is the safest way to cleanse because it wont harm any object. Though, it can be intensive depending upon the quantity and quality of the energies needing to be stripped away.
  11. Charged Crystals: Some crystals have a natural ability to strip away energies of items and leave them neutral, amethyst or rock crystal excels at such work.
  12. Sweeping: Sweeps out negative energies.

What  plants can be used for smudging /healing?

‘Sage’ of (all kinds), cedar, juniper, sweet grass and lavender are plants that are used to make ( sticks) (smudging bundles) for removing negative energy, from  spaces, sacred items and also for healing.

With all the energies moving in and around your home its a great time to set the stage with a quick cleansing. Smudge the entryways and corners with sage, sweetgrass, juniper, or cedar. You can also asperge (sprinkle) with salt water moving counterclockwise from one room to the next. As you work repeat the following:
May the winds inspire you
earth protect you
water heal you, and
fire always warm the hearth
As you move through the space, clap your hands to disperse old, stagnant energy, then use a bell or rattle to welcome fresh, sacred energy. If you have one or more sleigh bells, they’re perfect for this Midwinter cleansing.

Since it is believe, in many cultures, that the plants we use to burn and purify ourselves provides us with access to their soul and power, it is essential that people ask  permission before gathering these plants. To take only what you need without damaging the plant and give thanks for what  you take. ‘My advise is to learn how to grow your own ‘healing plants’ and then use them however you wish’. (Recently I was given some  fresh picked ‘Juniper and cedar’ sticks. they smelled so awesome and I like using them in my house for cleansing)…

‘Remember if you do not pick these plants yourself, know that someone else did that for you and that you could still give thanks for the life of those plants and the people who did pick them’.  Smudge is not an incense.   Don’t buy smudge sticks from health food stores or from anywhere that you can’t be sure the sacred plant was not treated respectfully  from seedling to harvest, as these are sacred herbs/plants. Please don’t abuse the plant.

A Crash Course in Warding

Let’s just start a series of crash courses in witchcraft, since sometimes we need to learn things the quick and dirty way. Today, let’s talk about wards.

What are wards?
Wards are protective energy barriers. They keep things out. You can place them around your home, certain rooms, even on certain objects. With practice and clear intentions, you can focus the wards to block out everything or only certain things. We’ll get to that in a bit.

Why should I ward my space and my things?
Wards can keep out all sorts of things you don’t want in your home. They can block out negative entities, wayward spirits, mischievous entities, demons, and (if you’re really good at what you’re doing) even gods. Some people ward their divination tools so they know there are no spirits tampering with the results.

So what do I need to do first?
Cleanse. This is very important. Wards are kind of like walls, or perhaps more accurately, bubbles. If you don’t clean the space first, you might trap things inside your ward bubble. You do not want that. There are lots of methods of cleansing, from burning sage to spritzing oil-infused water. Find a method you’re comfortable with and cleanse everything you’re going to be warding.

I’ve cleansed my home/item. Now what?
Now we ward. I’m going to give you a couple methods. Let’s start with my favorite, incense warding.

Incense warding can also be done with spritzes of water/essential oil blends or herb-infused water if you can’t have smoke in your space. Whichever you’re using, you want to have a blend of protective herbs. Bay leaves, cinnamon, ginger, mustard seed, and salt are some great options that you can find in the grocery store, no fancy witch shop necessary. If you’re using incense, make sure you’re using natural incense and not super cheap stuff that’s artificially scented. The magic is in the herbs, and you won’t get that from fake scents.

How to Incense/Spritz Ward an Item

  • Smoke or spray item.
  • Visualize the smoke or spray clinging to the item and wrapping around it like a tight blanket, protecting it from anything that would cause harm (or interference, etc.).

How to Incense/Spritz Ward Your Space

  • Pick a place to start. I always start at my altar, but it’s up to you. If you’re doing multiple floors, start either at the top or bottom floor.
  • Moving continuously to your right, smoke or spray along the walls and door frames. As you go, imagine a barrier being formed around the walls, ceiling, and floor, pushing outwards to fill the room. Visualize the smoke or spray forming the barrier to keep out anything that will do you harm. [If you have a hard time with visualization, you can simply focus on the intent of the smoke or spray keeping things out.]
  • Keep moving right, following the layout of your home, making sure you get all the closet spaces. You basically want to outline the entire area you’re protecting, whether it’s you’re room or your whole house.
  • For multiple floors, repeat on each level.
  • For big layouts where there are rooms in the middle, go around those rooms as well.
  • I like to reinforce the wards over outside doors, windows, and mirrors. These are all passages of sorts, and when I reach them, I use the incense to draw a pentagram in the air over them. This is entirely up to you.
  • You’re done when you’ve reached the point where you began.

So why do we go to the right? Is that important?
Kind of. Going to the right is like going clockwise. It’s about making things and progression, where going to the left or counter-clockwise is about deconstruction or reversal. [I read this idea in a witchy book a long time ago and will try to find a source when I can. If you honestly don’t feel it makes a difference, do whatever you’re comfortable with.]

Can I place wards that keep out certain things but not others?
Sure. When you’re going around your space/warding your item, your intent is what’s important. I like to ward out entities that mean harm - it’s nice and general and doesn’t keep the fae out. Some people might want certain spirits and not others. Have your intentions clear in your mind as you place your wards.

That’s neat and all, but what are some other ways to ward?
Let’s list a few.

Symbol/Sigil Wards

  • Choose (or make) a symbol or sigil that has protective properties. I’ve done this with Pluto’s astrological symbol because I worship him and it’s my way of being like, “Hey, Pluto. Please protect me, kthanxbai.” Pentagrams are nice and basic witchy/pagan symbols if you like them.
  • Draw the symbol over doors and windows. You do not literally have to draw it. It can be in water, incense smoke, or just your finger against the surface if you want.
  • As you’re drawing, make sure you have your intentions in mind - that nothing harmful can pass through this door, that the windows remain closed against entities, etc.

Energy Bubbles (if you have control over your energy)

  • Pick an item - any item.
  • Get your warding intentions in mind.
  • Channel lots of energy into the item. Visualize it emanating from the item in a bubble to fill your space.
  • If you’ve got mad skillz, you can form the bubble to the walls and be super exact with where its barriers are.

Vocal Wards

  • If you like spoken (or thought) spells, come up with a small chant to protect your space.
  • You can repeat this chant as you focus on your item being protected or as you walk around your home, protecting every room.
  • This is really great to incorporate into basically any other form of warding and gives your magic an extra bit of oomph.

I’ve heard wards can “fade” over time. True or false?
Wards are just energy. Like all energies, they can disperse and weaken over time, or if something particularly nasty puts effort into destroying them. Redo your wards every so often (I do mine every few months, but it’s up to you), and especially before spiritual interactions. I also like to do mine after I’ve had lots of company, to kind of clear out family’s lingering energies and reinforce what I don’t want in my house.

In general, the intent of your wards is the most important part. Know what you want to keep out. This concludes our crash course on warding. Now go forth and protect some stuff!

So I used to actually avoid spending time in my bedroom because the energy was so stagnant and made me go into these super long depression sleeps. Nothing I did would get rid of this negative energy (burning sage incense, ect, nothing). It was awful. And then this morning I went out and bought a bunch of plants, purely for aesthetic reasons and it’s only been a few hours and????? My room feels so nice now??!!!! Like wth? It feels so GOOD to be in there now and so fresh and peaceful and it’s like this huge gross energy that was weighing me down before is just completely gone! Go out and get some plants everyone. Seriously, like research some that are easy to take care of and will do well with the amount of sunlight and humidity (or lack of it) in your room. Make sure they are non-toxic if you have pets. Just get some. Man the energy feels so good now.

The reason National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Day is so important because many indigenous women (obviously including trans/2spirit) have gone missing & murdered in an alarming rate. Our silent sadness was left without awareness, even our own people didn’t know what a national crisis this was. Too many missing & murdered indigenous women are left out of the inquiry and in discussion.

I burn sage and sweetgrass for you, Tina Fontaine. For you, Loretta Sanders. For you, Delaine Copenace. For you, Annie Pootoogook. For you, Marilyn Munroe. There are so many names that should not be forgotten. MMIW awareness is important.
