‘Sage’ of (all kinds), cedar, juniper, sweet grass and lavender are plants that are used to make ( sticks) (smudging bundles) for removing negative energy, from spaces, sacred items and also for healing.
With all the energies moving in and around your home its a great time to set the stage with a quick cleansing. Smudge the entryways and corners with sage, sweetgrass, juniper, or cedar. You can also asperge (sprinkle) with salt water moving counterclockwise from one room to the next. As you work repeat the following: May the winds inspire you earth protect you water heal you, and fire always warm the hearth As you move through the space, clap your hands to disperse old, stagnant energy, then use a bell or rattle to welcome fresh, sacred energy. If you have one or more sleigh bells, they’re perfect for this Midwinter cleansing.
Since it is believe, in many cultures, that the plants we use to burn and purify ourselves provides us with access to their soul and power, it is essential that people ask permission before gathering these plants. To take only what you need without damaging the plant and give thanks for what you take. ‘My advise is to learn how to grow your own ‘healing plants’ and then use them however you wish’. (Recently I was given some fresh picked ‘Juniper and cedar’ sticks. they smelled so awesome and I like using them in my house for cleansing)…
‘Remember if you do not pick these plants yourself, know that someone else did that for you and that you could still give thanks for the life of those plants and the people who did pick them’. Smudge is not an incense. Don’t buy smudge sticks from health food stores or from anywhere that you can’t be sure the sacred plant was not treated respectfully from seedling to harvest, as these are sacred herbs/plants. Please don’t abuse the plant.
The reason National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Day is so important because many indigenous women (obviously including trans/2spirit) have gone missing & murdered in an alarming rate. Our silent sadness was left without awareness, even our own people didn’t know what a national crisis this was. Too many missing & murdered indigenous women are left out of the inquiry and in discussion.
I burn sage and sweetgrass for you, Tina Fontaine. For you, Loretta Sanders. For you, Delaine Copenace. For you, Annie Pootoogook. For you, Marilyn Munroe. There are so many names that should not be forgotten. MMIW awareness is important.
The problem with having small pets (rodents, birds, reptiles, amphibians, etc.) as a witch means you can’t burn anything that puts off smoke because their tiny lungs are so small that the amount of smoke we can breath and still be fine is 10000000000× less fine to them. Wanna burn some sage to get rid of that negativity clog in your room? NOPE. Need to burn some herbs or some shit? WRONG. Wanna burn some incense to help with a spell or just make your room smell nice? WRONG AGAIN. Granted, you could have your incense like 2 inches away from your open window and that should be fine but I mean DIFFICULT. You love your animals but you’ve also gotta get rid of that nasty ass energy and it isn’t going away with salt water so I mean what do you do? WELL HAVE I GOT A SOLUTION FOR YOU FRIEND.
0: lmao don’t burn shit on a regular basis. At most, once every other week..
1: Open all Windows. Open. Them. All.
1.5: If its incense, just put it as close to the window as possible as you can (and I mean fucking close) and disregard the rest.
2: Get a fan ready because boy oh boy you’re gonna need it.
3: Cover all of the tanks/cages/what have you, with towels. Don’t leave an inch open buddy. (No, this isnt going to suffocate them, towels are just acting as a filter to get all that nasty shit out)
4: Burn yo shit AS FAST AS YOU CAN no longer than 7 minutes because the smoke will murder your babies.
5: Put it out and IMMEDIATELY TURN THAT FAN ON, AIMED OUT A FUCKING WINDOW.
6: Run the fan for 10-30 minutes
7: Take off the towels AND ENJOY YOUR ALIVE CHILDREN
So I used to actually avoid spending time in my bedroom because the energy was so stagnant and made me go into these super long depression sleeps. Nothing I did would get rid of this negative energy (burning sage incense, ect, nothing). It was awful. And then this morning I went out and bought a bunch of plants, purely for aesthetic reasons and it’s only been a few hours and????? My room feels so nice now??!!!! Like wth? It feels so GOOD to be in there now and so fresh and peaceful and it’s like this huge gross energy that was weighing me down before is just completely gone! Go out and get some plants everyone. Seriously, like research some that are easy to take care of and will do well with the amount of sunlight and humidity (or lack of it) in your room. Make sure they are non-toxic if you have pets. Just get some. Man the energy feels so good now.
Smoke Cleanse: (Commonly using sage)Using smoke from a burning sage bundle, pass it over the item or being that you would like to cleanse. Focus on your intent while sending out the negative energy. Use incantations if you like. Make sure the plant you are burning is in no way poisonous and is safe! This cannot be stressed enough!
Incense smoke: Choose a specific scent corresponding to your goal. Pass it over an item or being like smoke cleansing. Focus on you intent and cast out negative energy.
Holy water: You can purchase or create your own. Submerge or sprinkle over an item as needed. Focus on your intent to help cleanse it from negative energy. You can use an incantation, say a chant, or call on any entities you work with.
Running Water: Make sure the item is unable to be harmed by water! Submerge into a running creek or river. Let it wash away all the negative energies and become charged with positive one. Rainwater can be used as well.
Sea salt: Bury the item you want cleansed into sea salt, make sure it will not harm the item. Leave it for a few days in the salt. The salt will absorb any unwanted energies.
Sunlight: Make sure the item will not be harmed, certain crystals will fade in the sunlight! Leave the item in full sunlight and let it absorb the suns positive energies and remove the negative ones.
Moonlight: Place an item outside or on the window sill to soak up the moonlight and dispel negative energies.
High vibration sounds: Using a crystal bowl, a Tibetan Singing bowl, a gong, drumming, tuning fork or even your favorite music turned up loud will cleanse an item of unwanted energies.
Pyramid Energy: Placing an item under or inside a pyramid which has been charged for cleansing will take away any negative energy and return the item to neutral.
Personal Energy: Using your own personal energy to drive the unwanted energy out of the item that needs cleansing. It is the safest way to cleanse because it wont harm any object. Though, it can be intensive depending upon the quantity and quality of the energies needing to be stripped away.
Charged Crystals: Some crystals have a natural ability to strip away energies of items and leave them neutral, amethyst or rock crystal excels at such work.
Let’s just start a series of crash courses in witchcraft, since sometimes we need to learn things the quick and dirty way. Today, let’s talk about wards.
What are wards? Wards are protective energy barriers. They keep things out. You can place them around your home, certain rooms, even on certain objects. With practice and clear intentions, you can focus the wards to block out everything or only certain things. We’ll get to that in a bit.
Why should I ward my space and my things? Wards can keep out all sorts of things you don’t want in your home. They can block out negative entities, wayward spirits, mischievous entities, demons, and (if you’re really good at what you’re doing) even gods. Some people ward their divination tools so they know there are no spirits tampering with the results.
So what do I need to do first? Cleanse. This is very important. Wards are kind of like walls, or perhaps more accurately, bubbles. If you don’t clean the space first, you might trap things inside your ward bubble. You do not want that. There are lots of methods of cleansing, from burning sage to spritzing oil-infused water. Find a method you’re comfortable with and cleanse everything you’re going to be warding.
I’ve cleansed my home/item. Now what? Now we ward. I’m going to give you a couple methods. Let’s start with my favorite, incense warding.
Incense warding can also be done with spritzes of water/essential oil blends or herb-infused water if you can’t have smoke in your space. Whichever you’re using, you want to have a blend of protective herbs. Bay leaves, cinnamon, ginger, mustard seed, and salt are some great options that you can find in the grocery store, no fancy witch shop necessary. If you’re using incense, make sure you’re using natural incense and not super cheap stuff that’s artificially scented. The magic is in the herbs, and you won’t get that from fake scents.
How to Incense/Spritz Ward an Item
Smoke or spray item.
Visualize the smoke or spray clinging to the item and wrapping around it like a tight blanket, protecting it from anything that would cause harm (or interference, etc.).
How to Incense/Spritz Ward Your Space
Pick a place to start. I always start at my altar, but it’s up to you. If you’re doing multiple floors, start either at the top or bottom floor.
Moving continuously to your right, smoke or spray along the walls and door frames. As you go, imagine a barrier being formed around the walls, ceiling, and floor, pushing outwards to fill the room. Visualize the smoke or spray forming the barrier to keep out anything that will do you harm. [If you have a hard time with visualization, you can simply focus on the intent of the smoke or spray keeping things out.]
Keep moving right, following the layout of your home, making sure you get all the closet spaces. You basically want to outline the entire area you’re protecting, whether it’s you’re room or your whole house.
For multiple floors, repeat on each level.
For big layouts where there are rooms in the middle, go around those rooms as well.
I like to reinforce the wards over outside doors, windows, and mirrors. These are all passages of sorts, and when I reach them, I use the incense to draw a pentagram in the air over them. This is entirely up to you.
You’re done when you’ve reached the point where you began.
So why do we go to the right? Is that important? Kind of. Going to the right is like going clockwise. It’s about making things and progression, where going to the left or counter-clockwise is about deconstruction or reversal. [I read this idea in a witchy book a long time ago and will try to find a source when I can. If you honestly don’t feel it makes a difference, do whatever you’re comfortable with.]
Can I place wards that keep out certain things but not others? Sure. When you’re going around your space/warding your item, your intent is what’s important. I like to ward out entities that mean harm - it’s nice and general and doesn’t keep the fae out. Some people might want certain spirits and not others. Have your intentions clear in your mind as you place your wards.
That’s neat and all, but what are some other ways to ward? Let’s list a few.
Choose (or make) a symbol or sigil that has protective properties. I’ve done this with Pluto’s astrological symbol because I worship him and it’s my way of being like, “Hey, Pluto. Please protect me, kthanxbai.” Pentagrams are nice and basic witchy/pagan symbols if you like them.
Draw the symbol over doors and windows. You do not literally have to draw it. It can be in water, incense smoke, or just your finger against the surface if you want.
As you’re drawing, make sure you have your intentions in mind - that nothing harmful can pass through this door, that the windows remain closed against entities, etc.
Energy Bubbles (if you have control over your energy)
Pick an item - any item.
Get your warding intentions in mind.
Channel lots of energy into the item. Visualize it emanating from the item in a bubble to fill your space.
If you’ve got mad skillz, you can form the bubble to the walls and be super exact with where its barriers are.
If you like spoken (or thought) spells, come up with a small chant to protect your space.
You can repeat this chant as you focus on your item being protected or as you walk around your home, protecting every room.
This is really great to incorporate into basically any other form of warding and gives your magic an extra bit of oomph.
I’ve heard wards can “fade” over time. True or false? Wards are just energy. Like all energies, they can disperse and weaken over time, or if something particularly nasty puts effort into destroying them. Redo your wards every so often (I do mine every few months, but it’s up to you), and especially before spiritual interactions. I also like to do mine after I’ve had lots of company, to kind of clear out family’s lingering energies and reinforce what I don’t want in my house.
In general, the intent of your wards is the most important part. Know what you want to keep out. This concludes our crash course on warding. Now go forth and protect some stuff!

What do you do when you feel disconnected from those around you or when you're feeling burnt out? What advice would you give to combat loneliness?
I write. I play music loudly. I put extra lotion on my face and hands, and I sing softly under my breath. I make myself dinner, usually something I haven’t had in a while. I try not to look at the news. I wear a sheer or lacy bra under a soft soft sweatshirt that has a hole in the right cuff. I take a long hot shower. I clean my stove. I call my mother. I put on make up and dance with my cat in my arms across the room.
I grab a book and I go out and sit at the end of the bar and I order a double rye whiskey with almost no ice. I read and sip. I casually glance about.
I play the music even louder and I take off my socks and I flex my feet. I revel in how many different places my feet have taken me. I might feel sad about the people who’s feel may have brushed mine. Whether it was my college best friend and I on the couch in my apartment sipping hot tea and laughing uproariously as our feet rested next to each other. Or maybe the first time my ex and I made love in the morning on the couch in his apartment and our feet kept brushing. Or the times my feet brushed against a friends as we stood close, or under a table in a crowded bar.
I go through the packed and disorganized drawers in my house and find a matchbook from my favorite bar in Manhattan and I try and remember how I used the only two matches that are missing. I think about sharing drinks with friends at that bar and how nice it was to be familiar with Nolita and it’s streets and gems.
I burn sage and incense. I don’t say a word for hours. I practice my signature and lament at the fact that Katharine never looks good compared to my rushed and crazed last name in pen. I water my plants and I rearrange all the furniture in my apartment.
I text everyone who makes my soul sing, and never worry about them getting back to me. Just letting them know that they’re on my mind.
Be kind to yourself. Excessively. Be sweet and gentle. Take time for yourself and do almost nothing. It helps. Then, take the time to be ruthlessly productive. Tackle your closet. Or a project you’ve set aside. Don’t stay still too long, but don’t rush. Just ride it out while staying aware.
**Before anything, you should clean your house physically. A cluttered house means that energy can get stagnant and cluttered itself. It’s important to magickally clean a house you just moved into to get rid of all the left over energy from the last owners!
Try using environmentally friendly (organic possibly) cleaners if you can afford it!
Put some essence oils in your cleaners to add some extra use behind them (and make things smell a bit better)
Use your broom to “sweep” out all of the negative energy. Visualize the energy as if it was dust and sweeping it out leaves a bright clean aura inside.
Burn sage or some other herb throughout the house
Ring a bell or clap through the nooks and crannies of the house to break up trapped stagnant energy
Burn some incense while you’re cleaning
Visualize a light in your house getting brighter and brighter as you clean through out the house.
