Disney Animators Study Their Reflections in Mirrors to Draw Classic Characters’ Facial Expressions

For decades, professional animators have relied on mirrors and their own facial expressions to be able to produce the dynamic, expressive characters that audiences know and love. Using themselves as models, the artists leer, grin, and grimace at their own reflections so that they can recreate the right nuances of each look on paper.

In this charming set of photos, legendary animators from the 1940s to the 1960s can be seen making hilarious faces at themselves as they sketch beloved characters like Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, and Fred Flintstone. Working in famed studios like Walt Disney Production, Warner Bros, and Hanna-Barbera Productions, these artists brought to life many of the creations that defined the golden age of American animation, from Tom and Jerry to Lady and the Tramp.

you know what’s always bugged me? when a character is faced with some magical two headed being or some shit and one always lies while the other tells the truth and to figure out which is which the character’s like “which one of you is the liar” or something like bruh literally all you gotta do is be like “what’s two plus two” one of them’s gonna say four and the other one is gonna say 83 or some shit. there you go. answered. go on with your magical quest to defeat david bowie.

A little idea I’ve had for a while. After the last Animaniacs production wrapped up, the Warner siblings get removed from the lot once the eldest sibling becomes an adult. Yakko meets up with Bugs, a colleague he’d known for years, while waiting for Wakko and Dot to get dropped off from school. Real-life issues and whatnot.

Sorry for some panels looking so much better than others. I never intended to get the whole thing nice and polished.

I wonder if Lance struggles with regretting sneaking out that night Shiro crashed on Earth because if he didn’t he wouldn’t be stuck in space fighting a war for the rest of his life.

I wonder if he gets upset at himself for feeling that way. He /knows/ that it was a good thing that he did what he did, so it’s selfish for him to regret it. But he still can’t help but feel that way sometimes, because he probably will never see Earth or his family again because of his own actions.

the reason i want Lance to be the black paladin is because it would be so good for him, and not JUST Lance, but the rest of the team too. say what you want about Allura being a better candidate, and while it would be logical to have her lead, she already has her leader traits fleshed out. but something she and the rest of the team really need to learn, is supporting each other.

we all know Lance is really insecure about himself, and suddenly being thrusted into the role of a leader would be very overwhelming for him. he will need support from his teammates to help him get through this and have him learn to believe in himself. this means the team will have no choice but to learn to support Lance and accept him as a leader figure. they will have no choice but to start taking him seriously and not brushing him off. they will have to learn to respect him more than the teammate that cracks jokes and flirts around with aliens. they will have to learn to respect his choices and follow his lead. everyone will have character development if Lance becomes the black paladin. he is the best option, he can make a wonderful leader if people would give him a chance and the time to develop.
