MD: Following in Avatar Aang’s footsteps is a hard act to follow, but as soon as we started talking about ideas for Korra’s character, we knew she would be a worthy successor. We wanted her to be headstrong and aggressive, someone who would never back away from a fight. But we gave her a vulnerable side too.
BK: For Korra’s final design recipe, Joaquim provided the majority of the ingredients, Ryu added the spice, and I merely baked it all together.

BK: I like to imagine that Asami lied, she lied about Varrick wanting that suit just to get Tenzin out of there. She’s got this sly little look on her face and I think she’s like, “Yeah, it’ll buy me some time.“

JDS: Right now, Tenzin is going, "What, what, what, where is he?”

BK: So, yeah, Asami has had a pretty rough week or so… I don’t know, how much longer?

MD: It was a couple weeks.

BK: Couple of weeks, yeah. So, this was, you know, Mike and I worked on this scene together and I really wanted to have… I just loved their story, their whole how-they-started, you know, kinda fought over Mako… But what was cool is they never really took it out on each other, and then this beautiful relationship kind of developed out of it. So…

MD: Yeah, and we wanted to have them start as friends and have that friendship develop into maybe something a little more.

BK: Into love.

MD: Yes.

BK: And then there was- I always remembered, ‘cause Asami is not like the benders, so sometimes she wouldn’t be in the crazy action scenes and she never got to go to the spirit world. So, I thought…

MD: Yeah. It’s nice.

BK: It’s a beautiful way for them to go together and live happily ever after…the end.

BK: I love how this always feels really realistic to me when everyone’s standing around and they look really awkward and uncomfortable and they don’t know what to do.

JDS: I’m kind of the default “warrior dude” designer, so I took the initial pass on Tonraq’s design for Book One. By the time we got to Book Two, we knew he was playing a much bigger role and his design needed to be refined. The idea was that he’s built like a barbarian and fights brutish, in-your-face style that contrasts with his brother’s slender frame and elegant technique. Expressions by Ki-Hyun Ryu. BK: These early Eska concepts by Ki-Hyun Ryu all have a great sense of spooky, icy, formal elegance.

JDS: Eska and Desna are two of the more memorable characters from Book 2. Their designs were a bit tough to break. I can remember seeing earlier versions of these characters on Josh Middleton’s computer or nearly a month as he struggled to pin down their look. Everyone was chipping in ideas and I believe we even went so far as to get full character turns made based on those previous takes. But they just did not feel right. It was not until Ryu took a pass and gave them their distinctive hunch and dead-eyed expression that the characters finally came to life. If I remember correctly, Josh came up with the slit in their long sleeves that allowed their arms free range of movement, which I thought was a nice touch. Bryan Konietzko: Mike and I had the idea for Korra’s character, but we really wanted Joaquim to be in on the ground floor when it came to her design. We had a phone call with him where we described her as being a Water Tribe version of a snowboarder or an MMA fighterJoaquim went right to work and about an hour later, he e-mailed us the drawing on the upper left which is very close to how Korra ended up looking.

BK: So yeah, I mean honestly, I was a little worried about adding Kai just because we had so many characters. Nothing against him. And then I was a little worried-I just didn’t know because he was kind of Aang’s age and he was a little Aang-like, a little bit of a trickster. I was like, “Man, I don’t know if people are gonna like them or feel like he’s stepping on Aang’s toes or something,” but talking to the fans at comic con - man, they love Kai.

JdS: Do they like him?

BK: Yeah. I like his hair.

MDD: Yeah, he’s a cool little kid.

BK: Angie and I-we had a tough time with his design. Maybe because I was worried about him being too similiar to Aang or something and Ryu took the one Angie I had done and I don’t think we had done a good job. Ryu gave him these cool suspenders and made his hair really fun to draw.

JDS: As we initially started to kick around concepts of the Airbender wing suits, I imagined a much more traditional approach to the costume, with a stretchy fabric that wrapped around the belt and tied off at the legs. 

BK: Joaquim’s concept was a cool design, but I wanted to bring the new generation of Airbenders into the modern era. So I continued to develop the wing suit idea into more of a contemporary flight suit. It was tricky figuring out how the wings were going to fold up when not in use. I was getting closer with these sketches, but Mike wasn’t crazy about the baggy wings, and I agreed. Once I applied Mike’s note about not making the wings baggy, the suit finally came together nicely. We never managed to weave the following bit of backstory into the show, but the idea is Asami designed these modern wing suits for the new Airbenders. 

MD: Because three years have passed since Book Three, all the Airbenders needed to be updated. The kids went through the most obvious growth spurts, but I love the little details, like how Bumi lost his paunch and bulked up, no doubt due to all the training. MD: I always enjoy it when TV shows jump ahead between seasons. It makes me feel like the characters and the world have a life of their own while I’m not watching. So with Book Two, we jumped ahead six months. Mako is now a cop, Asami runs Future Industries, Bolin’s trying to keep the Pro-bending dream alive, and Korra’s growing more frustrated with Tenzin’s airbending training. And with a new season come new outfits!

BK: Once the looks of the main characters are well established, I like to vary them with costume and hair changes where it makes sense. These variations often end up being production headaches, as we try to keep track of which outfit is supposed to be worn in each sequence. I am quite pleased with how Korra’s long-sleeved outfit turned out; it was meant to be a colder-weather outfit for her time back in the Southern Water Tribe. Oddly enough, all the concepts had him wearing his red scarf neatly tucked into his jacket. For the record, I was all for it, but Bryan made a last-minute decision to remove it from his final design. Everyone needed to be winterized, so Bolin got a nice, comfy parka variation on his normal, outfit. As for Asami, I based her snazzy new coat on a real one I found on some Japanese fashion website.

MDD: We really wanted to make it feel like what Korra did to save the Air Nation took a-as Tenzin says, “a great toll.” And it’s not gonna be a quick bounce back for her.

BK: At the time of this recording (this has not been released and fans haven’t seen this yet). I’m sure people are going to be very upset. I think they think we delight in having Korra go through bad stuff, but it’s not like we’re ‘heheheh’ here. Y'know, evil cackles. You need to have high stakes for these stories to resonate and to be dramatic. And like Mike said, we didn’t just want “Oh and then…” You see these action movies where people get all beat up and the next scene, they’re fine. We didn’t want that. Not only physically is she quite compromised, but emotionally especially.

JdS: That’s a really important point. You never see that. You never see the emotional toll of violence.

MDD: She’s trying to put on a brave face, but you can tell she’s in rough condition.

MD: Korra’s story in Book Two was about humans moving beyond their ordinary abilities, and becoming something extraordinary. When she loves her connection to the past Avatars and her Avatar spirit, Korra looks deep within and forms a new connection with the cosmic version of herself. In Hindu philosophy, there is a concept called atman, which is defined as the “innermost essence of each individual” or the supreme universal self.“ This is my interpretation of what Korra sees and becomes when she meditates. The giant blue cosmic Korra is a visual representation of her inner essence.

JDS: There were a couple of big animation obstacles we had to hurdle with this giant kaiju-style battle. First, the majority of the fight takes place in Yue Bay, so that means a ton of water animation, which translates to a ton more drawings for the effects animators overseas. To counter this, we tried to stage a good portion of the shots lookking up with the water offscreen (this also helped convey scale). Second was the concept that in order to truly convey the massive weight of the combatants, Korra and Unalaq would have to move more slowly than if they were normal sized. This also equates to more drawings being required of the animators, as now more in-betweens need to be drawn to ensure the slow motion looks smooth.
