Brooklyn ‘Brooke’ Taylor is 19 years old. She is a witch, and has the ability to control and manipulate the elements. She is portrayed by Sasha Pieterse.
“There’s no such thing as magic.”
Brooklyn, unsurprisingly, was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, in a kind and loving family. She had three older brothers who would have done anything and given anything up to keep her safe and happy. She was around six the first time her magic manifested itself, when she accidentally set her parents curtains on fire. The young girl was confused and didn’t understand what had happened. She told her parents that she made fire and it happened by accident. A little understandably, her parents were scared, but informed her that she couldn’t have made fire. They assumed that their daughter must have been playing with a lighter, and she was chastised for it and warned that it shouldn’t happen again. A few years later, something else happened, and she somehow managed to remove all of the water from the family’s fish tank. When she tried to replace it, it didn’t work, and she realised her parents must have been right, that she couldn’t cause things to happen. Incidents like this became increasingly regular and Brooklyn began to lock herself away in order to stop it from happening. It became more and more difficult to keep the little outbursts of magic to herself, and she ended up destroying parts of her bedroom on many occasions. Her parents didn’t understand what their daughter was doing, and what was causing this to happen. They carted her to multiple psychologists, and she was eventually diagnosed with a mild form of schizophrenia. But somehow, Brooklyn knew that wasn’t right. The medication that was given to her didn’t help, it didn’t stop the destructive outbursts that she was having, and they were getting harder and harder to control. She grew defensive of herself, gaining an attitude as a means to keep people away from her. She acted like she was tough and like she didn’t need anyone around her, although that was really the only thing she did need.
During the Uprising, Brooklyn learned that there were supposedly others like her, and that there were other species, too. She learned of the vampires and the wolves, but she couldn’t comprehend that they existed. She blamed it all on herself, all on the apparent condition that she had been diagnosed with, and thought that the whole Uprising was her fault, that she had created all of these things and that they were all a figment of her imagination. It all came to an explosive end one night, when she tried to explain to her parents that she didn’t think her medication that was working and that she thought there was something else wrong with her. There was an argument, and she completely lost control of her power. It caused her to black out, and when she woke up her house was in ruins, her family murdered. She realised, very quickly, that she had caused this to happen – even if she couldn’t quite remember how.
Brooklyn absolutely refuses to use her power. She still doesn’t believe that it’s real, she doesn’t understand why she is a witch and she still doesn’t believe that there are others like her. However, she does understand that she didn’t cause the Uprising, and that it wasn’t part of her imagination – she just doesn’t want to believe it. She lives alone, keeping to herself to try and keep everyone who may come into contact with her safe. She doesn’t ever want to hurt anyone, but she doesn’t understand how to control her power. Brooklyn is terrified that she’ll hurt or kill someone else, and still hasn’t quite come to terms with the fact that she murdered her parents. She can’t keep telling herself it was an accident, but she blames herself and her magic.
+ kind-hearted, alert, compassionate
- distrustful, defensive, alone
The Ashworth witches have heard of her, but none have actually met her. There were whispers of a witch who held the same power as Candice, and the four witches have been looking for the young girl ever since. They think that she will be able to bring back the power of their coven, and that she will be able to help them find what they are looking for – Candice’s killer.
