Leah Smith is our latest BGKI, see what she has to say about her style…
How would you define your personal style?
My person style is very much all over the place. It contains lots of vintage pieces and inspired by yester-years.
Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?
Sometimes I do use runway trends for inspiration and put my twist on a trend, but usually whatever I like is what I wear, no matter if its in or not.
Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?
Never. I really love bold vibrant colors the more the better. I like to keep my style fun.
When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?
I think of a woman any shape/size who is not only rocking something fab,but also showing confidence with whatever she is wearing, she is fierce, a head turner!
Do you accept anyone’s critique or are you confident in your style choices?
The only person’s critiques I will listen to are my little sister. I know that she will never come from a negative place, we have similar styles and we do that for each other, big sis 2 lil sis, sometimes I need a second opinion on stuff when the mirror can’t make my mind up. Other than that I don’t allow the thoughts of what others may say deter me from wearing what I want.
As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?
I have always had a love for vintage, but during that time I really lacked the confidence to wear what I truly wanted to. It took a while but I finally became fashionably freed, and it is amazing.
Do you participate in your local fashion scene?
Not as much as I like, the fashion scene here in Nashville is small. I would love to be more involved.
How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?
It doesn’t really matter what is going on, my style and clothes are how I’m feeling that day.
What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?
I really cannot stand ugg boots, in my opinion they are never a way to start or finish an outfit.
What is your favorite trend right now?
Color blocking , androgynous fashion and everything lace, leather, and leopard print. Oh and I can’t forget sheer blouses & arm parties, but these are things I always love.
Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?
No. I have had a goal of learning to sew for years. I come up with cool stuff in my head, but that is as far as it goes. I do love D.I.Y fashion though.
Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?
Versace and Betsey Johnson, I have a long time love affair with their designs. I also love Monif C, her designs are gorgeous she knows what a curvy girl likes.
