Malia working in the snow. She’s really been coming into her own this past month and is becoming a truly valuable member of the team! She’s still figuring out the whole pointing thing, but her ability to track and flush rabbits is getting impressive. Even Kai is starting to view her as a teammate and learning to follow her through the trees in anticipation of a flush. It’s a great feeling watching it come together
Sometimes you have to wonder what’s going through a dog’s mind. I was folding laundry and found a sock with a hole in it, so I threw it to Bingley thinking he would catch it and play with it. Instead he just sat there and let it land on his nose. And he left it there until I took it off. What the what?
They did it!! Kai and Malia finally worked as a team today and it was amazing! What a fun flight! Kai was chasing the rabbit around a bush when Malia came in from the side and cut it off. With a goshawk at its back and a dog at its front, the rabbit decided to leap straight up in the air, where Kai collided with it and brought it to the ground! Malia was great and knew well enough to give Kai space once he had it so everything went smoothly from there.
I’m on cloud 9! Nine months of fieldwork with the pup and a rough first week trying to get Kai to cooperate with her, but I think it’s finally paying off!
