Happy Spirit Day from Tumblr

Spirit Day was created in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a way to support bullied LGBT youth. This year, Spirit Day is October 19, and Tumblr’s staff joins with communities worldwide – inside and outside of Tumblr – to wear purple in support of anti-bullying efforts and LGBT rights generally.

In October 2010, Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan created Spirit Day to remember and support LGBTQ youth who have been victims of bullying. Spirit Day is celebrated on October 20th by wearing purple clothing, inspired by the purple stripe on the rainbow flag which represents “spirit.” In the past three years, Brittany has appeared throughout the media to spread awareness of bullying victimization, successfully won celebrity endorsement of the day, and seen 1.6 million Facebook users sign up to celebrate. We talked with her about how she was inspired to create Spirit Day and why it’s more important than ever.
