There was one ceiling tile that wasn’t completely aligned with the others. It had been driving Nico crazy since he woke up. But he found himself staring at it anytime he was alone. Which was often. Aside from the nurses and doctors that checked on him, no one else came in.

Ever since Will’s outburst, Nico had asked to keep visitors away. He couldn’t bring himself to tell his friends what had happened. Surely they’d heard it too. Surely they’d heard all the things Will said, all the things he’d called him.

The moment kept replaying in his head as he stared at the tile. Over and over. Even when he slept, he didn’t get a break from it. In the back of his mind, the shouts were still echoing.

“Ready to go home today?” Dr. Ass- something asked him. Nico shrugged. “I suggest you stay away from alcohol. You’re too young to give yourself liver damage.”

Nico rolled his eyes and pulled at the ends of his hair. “Yeah, well. Easy for you to say. You have your life made. Nothing to run away from. I’m trying to run away from everything.”

“Everything?” the doctor asked.

“I’m not suicidal,” he snapped, knowing that if he said the wrong thing, he’d have to stay longer and get checked into a psych ward. “I’m just saying… drinking stops the thinking. It always has. So I drink enough to forget.”

“Well what were you trying to forget this time? Because obviously it didn’t work until you reached unconsciousness.” Nico averted his gaze and stared at the IV in his arm. “Alright then. I hope I don’t have to see you back here with the same problem, Nico.” He nodded and watched as the doctor removed the IV and gave him some regular clothes that Percy and Annabeth had brought in for him.

Breakeven Pt. 2 | Rucas AU

Prompt: Lucas Friar returns to the city for the holidays after spending the last 9 years in Texas. While he’s there he gets to catch up with some old friends, including the girl who broke his heart all those years ago.
A/N: (Loosely inspired by the song “Breakeven” by The Script) This is a filler chapter. I wanted to right them reconnecting before all the shit goes down in the next chapter.
Word Count: 1,758

The baby shower went off without a hitch. Riley had to keep her greetings with the boy’s short due to Maya’s arrival. This was her friend’s day and she wasn’t going to spend it revisiting the past.

Maya makes her rounds, thanking everyone for coming. When she gets to Zay and Lucas’ table she’s a bit surprised to see them. “Hey, I didn’t know you were back in town.” She says giving Lucas an awkward side hug.

“I didn’t know you were pregnant until last night.” He jokes. Zay shakes his head before standing up to embrace her.

The two of them remained extremely close since high school. A lot of people assumed they’d get together eventually but funny enough they actually became best friends. Zay was Maya’s right hand man while Riley was traveling the world for work. He hadn’t seen her in over a year so the pregnancy was just as much of a surprise to him as it was to Lucas. Although Lucas didn’t seem to care all that much.

As they’re exchanging pleasantries, a tall dark haired guy walks over and wraps an arm around the mom to be, while simultaneously kissing her on the cheek.

Hey I remember you two.” The guy says extending his arm to shake their hands. It wasn’t until they got a good look at him that they realized it was Josh Matthews. Riley’s uncle and Maya’s long time love.

“Josh! Hey man, congratulations.” Lucas says shaking his hand firmly. “Yeah, congrats.” Zay says giving him a friendly hug.

“You guys know Riley’s here, right?” Josh asks, confused by why they were sitting all the way in the back by themselves. “She’s right over there.” He points her out. As if Lucas needed him to do that. He hasn’t let her out of his sight since she walked in.

“Yeah she said hi already.” Zay answers, shooting Maya a knowing look.

After a few shared awkward glances the soon to be parents excuse themselves and return to the rest of the party.

Every now and then Riley would look over to where they were sitting and she’d smile but she never came back over.
