Saturday night, February 23rd, I went to the hospital with contractions. They were 5-7 minutes apart and pretty consistent. My mom wanted me to go just as a precaution because she labored really quickly and was scared I would too. So, we went to the hospital and they hooked me up to all the monitors and checked me out. I was dilated to 3cm (I was 1cm at my doctor appointment the day before), and 80% effaced. To see if I would keep dilating and contract faster and stronger, the nurses had me walk the halls for a while. Zach walked with me and held my hand and kept me laughing. The contractions got worse, but I hadn’t made any progress in dilation or effacement. So, the nurses decided to send me home. They told me to come back when my contractions were 2-3 minutes apart, consistent through walking/sitting/laying/showering/etc, and strong enough to take my breath away or make me double over.
Monday morning, February 25th, I woke up at around 4 with pretty bad contractions. I tried sleeping through them but couldn’t do it. So, I gave up and got out of bed. I started timing them and kept track of them all day long. They were never consistent enough to justify going to the hospital. I’d have 5 or 6 contractions that were 2 or 3 minutes apart, and then I’d have 5 or 6 that were 7-10 minutes apart. Overall, not consistent enough to go to the hospital. I kept timing them all day and kept hoping the’d be consistent enough to go to the hospital. It didn’t happen for a while, but at around 9:15 that night I was having contractions that were 3 minutes apart, really strong, and consistent through showers/walking/hands and knees/breathing/etc. So, we loaded everything up and headed to the hospital.
When we got to the hospital, me and my mom went to the triage room and they hooked me up to the monitors. I was still contracting really bad and when they checked my cervix, I was dilated to 5cm! They made the decision to send me to a delivery room cause I WAS IN ACTIVE LABOR!!!! :D
So, we get into the delivery room about 30 minutes after we arrived to the hospital. They get me set up in bed and everything and start checking and monitoring me. When they checked my cervix, I was dilated to 8cm! After experiencing the contractions and everything, they asked me if I wanted any IV drugs or an epidural. I accepted fentanyl, an IV drug to take the edge off of the contractions, but that was it. It only lasted about 15 minutes before it wore off and was completely useless. I got 2 doses of that the entire time we were there but nothing else. They offered me morphine, but I declined. And I declined an epidural. But anyway! I was at 8cm and riding out the contractions. I labored in bed because I couldn’t walk with the contractions I was having. I only got up like twice and that was to use the bathroom. All of a sudden, while I was in the bathroom, I got a contraction and got THE strongest urge EVER to push. So my dad walked me back to my bed and the nurse ran out and got the midwife who was delivering my baby.
After the pushing contractions started, I had my whole crew in there to help me :) My mom and dad were on the left side of my bed. Dad was standing behind the bed and mom was standing at my hip. Zach, Casey, Becca, and Zach’s mom were standing on my right. Casey and Becca were standing towards my head, Zach was at my hip, and his mom was standing back behind him. Whenever I had to push, my dad would push my back forward, mom and Casey would hold my head, Zach held one leg, and I held my other one. Becca took pictures the entire time and Zach’s mom encouraged me from afar! lol. Pushing was THE weirdest feeling ever. It was such a strong urge. It’s so hard to explain. The best way I know how is to say that it’s like when you just KNOW you’re going to throw up..but you really don’t want to..so you try and hold it back but your body heaves anyway. It’s like that. It was so intense. While pushing, I never screamed or anything like that. But, I did do quite a bit of loud grunting and exasperated yelling.
Anyway, after 24 minutes of pushing, Brayden Elijah was born :)
I watched him come out after his head was out and they put him right on my belly. I just sat there and looked at him and rubbed his belly. I couldn’t stop saying, “you’re real! oh my God you’re real. you’re here.” I looked up at Zach and just started bawling. He was so beautiful. And so perfect and small. And he was real. He was really here. Zach cried when I looked up at him. He was so sweet.
At 3:07 in the morning on Tuesday February 26th, Brayden Elijah was born :) He weighed 7 pounds and 13 ounces, and was 20.5 inches long! He’s the love of my life. And I absolutely can’t imagine my life without him.
