February 25, 2016 - Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis)
These geese breed in Russia, migrating through Bulgaria and Romania to winter in Ukraine, the Black Sea coast, and sometimes Greece. They eat grains, including wheat, barley, and maize, in the winter and mostly grass leaves and shoots in the summer. They often nest near Peregrine Falcon and Snowy Owl nests, which provide some protection from predators. They are classified as Endangered by the IUCN due to hunting and rodenticides and are also potentially threatened by the effects of climate change on their tundra habitats.
