brand specific

Honestly, my big takeaway from the “LGBT Babadook” thing is how incredibly quickly it started generating comics and memes depicting the Babadook going around committing random acts of emotional cruelty against women, like this very specific brand of in-your-face misogyny is the defining gay male experience. Can we just… not?

anonymous asked:

yo the comments on that feminist man critique post are kinda disgusting and, like, how does viewing [it] as always a moffatesque sweaty desperate psychosexual thing differ from the (sort of) fundie or Victorian -all men are rapists- reasoning you objected to when arguing with that Maoist, or broad categories like dudebros, neck beards, etc. like, ya'll followers gonna start talking in ABO terms now? get Elliot Rogers up in here?

I’m not sure which comments (or actually which post) you’re referring to!

There are a couple of intertwined issues here where ‘Male Feminist’ typically refers to men who specifically brand themselves as feminist activists and in some cases pursue this as a career path. A depressing number of these men are later involved in controversies of the Hugo Schwyzer variety, where you would hope they weren’t left unsupervised with other people, let alone given authority to teach them gender studies.

(”You just call yourself a feminist to get laid!” takes on more weight when that is in fact a viable tactic that some men adopt, and when Everyday Feminism insists that you should never sleep with a man who isn’t a feminist it’s kind of obvious).

So you end up with a situation where ‘Male Feminist’ starts taking flack from feminists for being a ‘Nice Guy’ and from anti-feminists for being a ‘white knight cuck’ or whatever, and any actual male feminists who are just into ideology and not getting into your pants have to carefully differentiate themselves with alternative terminology and keep an anxious eye on the euphemism treadmill.

I hate that specific brand of male that thinks they’re special because they’re cynical of everything. Example: the other day i met this guy for like two seconds and when i left i was like “have a nice day!” And he goes “don’t say that. I hate cliches.” Like we get it you just watched fight club calm down Tyler Durden

tips for studyblrs on a budget

While there are a lot of good things about the studyblr community, a lot of people (myself included) have noticed that the goal of many within the community is often having the most perfect, beautiful notes and supplies. For a lot of people, this is just far too expensive to be justified. There’s obviously nothing wrong with if you have the money for the “studyblr best” supplies, or if you just want to treat yo’ self, but here’s some tips to help you get nice study supplies without breaking the bank!:

1. Dollar stores! They generally have a decent selection of office supplies (as well as a lot of other basics), and some stores stick to an “everything is $1″ policy. I tend to buy pens, sharpies, and notecards from dollar stores. Though a tip is to go for the sets of pens/sharpies, because those are likely to be cheaper than buying them somewhere else (individual pens aren’t necessarily cheaper at a dollar store). I also have a nice set of highlighters, and my mom got a set of gel pens that seem to be similar to the Pilot Juice pens.

2. Speaking of pens… if you want to keep a good variety of pens, my general rule of thumb is this: ~4 black pens in two different sizes (My most-used are my Pilot G-2 in the 1.0 size and the Muji 0.38) - this way you have a thicker pen when you want/need that, and a thinner pen when that’s preferred. If you only use one size, more power to ya. I like to use a thicker black pen for headings and use the thinner for details when taking notes.
As for colors, I recommend just having one of each color that you use. If you’re not going to use 5 shades of yellow pen regularly, you don’t need that new set with a cool shade you don’t have yet. Find a brand/type of pen you like, and stick with one or two colored sets at most (I learned this from experience).

3. Highlighters: Don’t get them if you know you don’t use them. Don’t get different varieties if you don’t use them. If you love the look of neon highlighters, you don’t need to splurge for something like the Zebra Mildliners. If you don’t like the neon ones, but think you’d use the Mildliners, go for it. Most of the time, I don’t use highlighters when taking notes, I just write the words I would have highlighted in a different color from the rest of the notes (this works best when you’re taking notes from a textbook or copying notes over).

4. Just get a decent backpack. One that’ll hold up and hold all you need, but don’t feel like you need a specific brand or style of backpack. It’s literally on your back half the time, it doesn’t need to be cute.

5. Cheap notebooks work just as well as expensive notebooks. Get the off-brand notebook on the bottom shelf at target. Don’t feel like you can’t use the remaining pages at the end after your class ends. You can start a new subject in an old notebook. You can practice handwriting in an old notebook. You can use an old notebook as scratch paper or to jot down random things you need to remember. Hell, make a hundred paper cranes with the extra paper if you like to. You don’t need to let the extra paper go to waste.

If you know you’ll only use about half a notebook for one of your classes, get one with less paper or get a 3- or 5- subject notebook for your classes. Each subject generally has less paper than a regular 1-subject notebook, and it helps keep everything together.

If you want to keep a bullet journal, that doesn’t mean you need a fancy notebook for it. You can make the inside look just as good or be just as useful as any Moleskine.

6. Study with a whiteboard. I’m one of those people who has to write something down ten times in order to remember it. Now I could use paper to write it all down, but that’s a lot of paper that I’m wasting over the course of a school year. I decided to get a couple whiteboards instead. I have one small one, about the size of a piece of paper (I don’t exactly remember the cost but I think it was somewhere around $5 maybe? Could have been another dollar store find), and I have a bigger one that I keep on my wall (this one was from Sams Club and cost around $12 and included markers, a tiny eraser, magnets, and a cork board section with push pins - I use this for reminders and holding up my wall calendar, but before exams I take it down and use it to review)

7. Don’t buy the pretty planner if you know you’re not going to use it. If you already have a bullet journal, you probably don’t also need a planner, and vice versa. You can generally use both in the same way, it’s just a matter of finding what works best for you.

9. Don’t fall into the studyblr aesthetic trap. If you know you won’t use something enough to make the purchase worth it, don’t feel like you have to get it.

If you really want to get something, go for it. But don’t feel like you have to have certain supplies to succeed or to be studyblr famous. I’ve been a stationery lover for much longer than studyblrs have been around, and these are just a few things I’ve learned. Now, go tackle that homework!

i do love that vm fits nicely into a family structure because they all fill the classic friend group roles

  • pike: mom friend (very protective, will kick your ass if you pull some dumb shit)
  • scanlan: dad friend (wants to help you out but has trouble Emotionally Expressing Himself Outside Of Jokes)
  • vex: big sister friend (you want advice??? wanna talk abt love and sex???? vex is ur girl. she’s also very good at giving advice and not following it herself.)
  • vax: big brother friend (either gives the Best advice or the Worst advice there’s no in between)
  • grog: big brother friend (constantly trying to fuck with you but if somebody else tries to he’ll kick their ass)
  • keyleth: younger sister friend (a lil naive and relies on others to help her understand things but also gets underestimated and treated like a child even though she’s competent in the things she cares about)
  • percy: younger brother friend (PETTY AF, SPECIFICALLY THAT BRAND OF PETTY THAT ONLY YOUNGER SIBLINGS HAVE, AND TOO CLEVER FOR HIS OWN GOOD)

Help a little autistic girl keep access to the only food she’ll eat!

I don’t normally do this but they’re so close to the needed amount of signatures and it’s such a simple thing.

Basically Ruby, 5, has autism and as a result she has a highly specific diet. She absolutely refuses to eat any other foods for her meals and it’s been going on for years – any attempts to get her to try new foods just stresses her out and makes her stop eating. Ruby’s favourite food is letter-shaped potatoes, but only a specific brand: the ones from the British superstore Tesco.

Tesco have stopped manufacturing these potato letters and Ruby’s family are running out of them. They occasionally run out now, until friends can locate some still in stock for them. When they run out, Ruby doesn’t eat at all. She becomes distressed, has traumatic meltdowns, and now has so much anxiety related to meal times that she has started to refuse to eat her other meals, too. She’s only 5 years old, and the petition only needs 900 more signatures at time of posting this.

Should enough attention be brought to the case, it’s possible that Tesco might be able to make arrangements for the family, and work something out for them. If you have a minute to sign, I’m sure Ruby and her family would greatly appreciate it!

juST A REMINDER THAT MEN ARE SO WORRIED ABOUT BEING EMASCULATED THAT THEY NEED THEIR OWN BRAND OF LEGGINGS SPECIFICALLY MADE FOR MEN IN ORDER FOR THEM TO FEEL OKAY AND IF THAT’S NOT SAD I DONT KNOW WHAT IS.

Hello! I didn’t actually expect that many people to request this and I was going to make this anyways soooo… Let’s get to it!

Before we get started to actually making the spread, you first need to answer the following:

  • Do I want to follow a theme?
  • If so, what theme do I want?
  • What are the things that motivate me?
  • Are there certain people that motivate me?
  • Do I want to plan my weekends?

My weekly spread isn’t the same every week and I change some things very often because I feel like it’s necessary to do so but I’m not one to change my over all color scheme very often although there are some studygrams who change theirs every week. It’s hard to keep on changing your theme if you are a studyblr so I suggest to stick to one for a long time. It’s not necessary to have one but it makes it more neat and pleasing in the eyes and makes it look more organized. I don’t know what they’re originally called, but I call them ‘space-fillers’ mainly because they fill up space (duh). To sum it up, these are basically little things you can add to your bujo to make it more handy and useful. (* - my favorites) Some examples are:

  • Weekly Playlist*
  • Sleep Tracker
  • Water Count
  • Thought of The Day (TOTD)*
  • Quote of The Day (QOTD)
  • Daily Mood
  • Weekly Expenses
  • What I Eat in a Day*

I want to make this clear, because I live in the Philippines, I don’t really have access to expensive stationeries that you could always see on tumblr and instagram such as Tombows, Muji pens, Artline Stix, and Mildliners. I know that there are some MUJI branches in Manila but it would mean climbing Mt. Everest, crossing the Han River, and spending your life savings. Not worth it (in my opinion because I’m like 14 who basically depends on her parents). So, learn to use what you have and supplies are just supplies. Expensive stationery don’t equal to immediately having beautiful lettering. I just use the Faber Castel ones but depending on where you live, these might not be available for you. I use it because it’s cheaper and does the job. Although the tips do fray overtime, you’re still getting more than what you paid for. So definitely a must-try.

Before we start. Checklist (* - optional)

  • Bujo
  • Markers
  • Glue
  • Ballpen
  • Ruler
  • Highlighter*
  • Washi Tape*
  • Colored Paper*
  • Photos*
  • Music

(I didn’t list any specific brands because you can always substitute supplies)

Okay and now we can finally start!

Okay, guess I’ll make a serious post about this:

There’s a problem in audio drama/serial fiction podcasts with representation. (I don’t listen to nonfiction podcasts, so I cannot comment on those.) Obviously, a lot of kinds of media have representation problems, but popular audio dramas often get lauded for diversity, so.

There’s a real disconnect between the kinds of people these stories are about and who gets to tell these stories. Podcasts like Welcome to Night Vale, The Adventure Zone, or The Strange Case of Starship Iris are highly praised for their well-written LGBT characters or characters of color. And yeah, they’re good! Their representation is sometimes even very meaningful and profound. I don’t want to dismiss that, especially all the great work that LGBT+ actors and actors of color have put into those kinds of shows. But they also tend to all have moments that bring me up short, make me go, “Oof, a straight white person definitely wrote this, didn’t they?”

Even good and radical sentiments in these podcasts ring hollow when I remember that straight white writers are the ones gaining reputation and profit from the stories that aren’t theirs.

Creative control matters. There needs to be more diversity among podcast writers and directors. Representation in characters is great, but that isn’t a substitute for a genuinely critical point of view. Take Friends at the Table. It’s not perfect, but it really shines in a lot of ways. LGBT characters and relationships are consistently centered, which makes sense for a show where at least four of the contributors are gay or trans. The story is actively anti-colonialist–yeah, the GM is black. There have been lines that I’ve cried at because a person of color wrote them. Something very real and beautiful lives in the beats of stories made by and for people like me.

So support creators of color. Support LGBT+ creators. For that matter, support disabled, non-Christian, poor, or any other kinds of marginalized creators, and especially support creators that are more than one of these things. Demand more from this medium that so many great things are made in.
