Firestone Walker brews the 2017 Vintage of Bravo, an Imperial #BrownAle aged in retired American oak bourbon barrels. A single-hopped strong brown ale brewed using the hop variety Bravo. This beer is then aged for up to a year in circa 1990’s used Heaven Hill bourbon barrels.

Deep cherry brown which has a very thin creamy head with a good carbonation. Aroma of coconut and bourbon. Tastes similar to the nose. Mouthfeel is smooth with a lot of alcohol warmth. Overall it’s a good bourbon barrel aged beer.

Frootwood / Founders (Michigan, USA)

バーボン樽とメープルシロップで熟成させたチェリーエール。というとすごく複雑な感じがするが、その通り非常に複雑なアロマとフレーバー。特に強いのはメープルの香り。焼きたてのトーストにラズベリージャムをたっぷり塗ったような香ばしい香りもある。飲むと一瞬酸味があるが、即座にそれは消えて甘味が感じられる。苦味は全く感じない。後口に感じる甘味と酸味のバランスがすごく良い。なんて美味しいんだ!さすが、Ratebeerで全てのフルーツビールの中で50位以内にランクインするだけある。

BrewDog, Paradox Heaven Hill 15.0% abv

BrewDog’s ongoing Paradox series of barrel aged imperial stouts has delivered more than it’s fair share of delights (and one that made me shudder in bleugh-ness), but the delightfully bonkers Scottish craft beer legends claim this one aged in Heaven Hill bourbon casks may be the best Paradox yet. ‘Kay. S'pose I better try it out then.

So I did, and sweet lord of fuck this stuff is chuffing amazing! 'Tis sweet as my smile and smooth as my cocoa butter moisturised derriere, It’s loaded with heady bourbon, there’s a dash of prune wine, a splash of tawny port, an Eccles cake dunked in there, a squirt of vanilla paste, a shard of charred salted caramel, an entire slice of black forest gateaux, three hundred weight of wadjamacallits and a brace of oojamaflips.

So yeah. It’s awesome. A beer to make you smile in pure delight, if you like hella sweet whiskey sozzled booze monsters that is. And if you don’t you’re not trying hard enough. Sort it out yeah? Cheers!

Firestone “Double DBA”

Double DBA is a limited-release English Barleywine aged in spent bourbon oak barrels. Firestone have deemed this to be an “imperial special bitter,” a non-existent style. The base of beer consists of a doubled up batch of Double Barrel Ale. This was actually just recently retired to make way for a new, as yet undisclosed beer. This review will be based on a 2013 vintage.


Aromas are driven by thick malts that carry sweet impressions of caramel nougat, maple syrup, and brown sugar. Fruity notes resemble fig preserves and cherry. The barrel gives a huge presence of bourbon, vanilla, and a touch of coconut. Alcohol notes come across like amaretto and port wine. Hops add a weak imprint of earth and herb.


The palate is very much like the nose, beginning with caramel and molasses. Fruits fill in the middle-register with notes of figs, dates, and raisins. Bourbon soon becomes the focal point, exposing flavors of vanilla and coconut. English hops add a subtle earthy quality that blends very nicely with woody tannins, followed by a complementary hint of spice. Finishing flavors are reminiscent of root beer (or whiskey and coke). The malt roast develops into subtle suggestions of chocolate. Some fusel notes envelop the aftertaste, but the bourbon flavor is incredibly effective at disguising the alcohol. Mouthfeel remains smooth over a medium-full body that grows sticky just before drying slightly at the end. Carbonation is weak, which when combined with the solvent properties of the alcohol, create an almost thin viscosity. Considering the high ABV, this is dangerously drinkable.


This is a beer for malt lovers, because sweetness dominates the palate. Bourbon has loads of influence, but not enough to dominate by any means. The English hops are quite complementary to the flavor of the malts, so everything ends up tasting very agreeable and whole. Complexity is nice and subtle. Considering Firestone still have their famous bourbon-aged English Barleywine, Sucaba, I’m sure they saw the obvious overlap. July 2014 marked the final release date, so I suggest you hoard any remaining bottles you’re lucky enough to find sitting around. I highly recommend it!

New Beer Review: The Bruery Fruet (Bottle)

Celebrating only their 4th Anniversary, the Bruery released this special limited old ale aged in bourbon barrels. Somewhat deceptively named, the beer doesn’t seem to actually have any fruit in it, but it certainly makes up for it with alcohol: 15.5% ABV. Upon first waft of aroma I can tell that this beer is something special: huge bourbon sweetness and caramel. On to the first sip: OH MY GOD this is fucking unbelievable. This is one of the richest, smoothest, and tastiest bourbon aged beers I’ve ever had. Very little heat, all creamy buttery decadent bourbon sweetness: perfect. The rest of the beer is sweet but balanced: dark fruits like raspberry, fig, pomegranate, with some brown sugar/caramel, vanilla, and custard rounding it all out. This beer is so drinkable its alcohol content is almost as astonishing as its flavor profile. This is right up there near KBS in terms of great bourbon barrel aged beers, and provides a phenomenal alternative to the stout if you want a rich dessert beer. It’s very pricey, but worth every penny. If you can find it, and you enjoy bourbon barrel aged beers, buy it no matter the cost.
