both of which

People hold hands a lot in LOTR and it’s really nice? It’s not just Frodo and Sam, but I never noticed before this reread. Pippin just now took Gandalf’s hand, and earlier he’d taken I think Bergil’s, a kid (ten, so old enough to walk around without help) he just met, as they walked around the city. So it’s apparently not weird, it’s just a Normal Thing.

Vaguely of relevance as well is the fact that Frodo says “he is very dear to me” of Aragorn after, what, about a fortnight of knowing him. I’m not saying he doesn’t have cause; it was a very crowded and busy fortnight. I too would probably call someone very dear to me if they had saved me from dying from stabbery and guided my friends safely through the wilderness.

It’s just all those ‘my dear Sam’ and ‘I love him’ that he and Sam do, even though they’re a product of extreme circumstances, aren’t even out of line with the culture they live in. They’re still just as meaningful, and I don’t think their power is decreased by that. I just think it’s notable that this isn’t even beyond the bounds of “propriety” for really close friends in high stress situations.

This isn’t where I meant this post to go, but I think this is why this story resonated with me so hard specifically as an aro and why I still don’t ship anything romantically in the Tolkienverse, because the world of Middle Earth is one where loving your close platonic friends and companions to the point of being physically and verbally affectionate is a normal occurrence. It’s just how things are. There’s a lot to be said about the cultural implications of that vs here and now, but I’m not really in a position to say it. But I think even before I knew How I Was, I knew that friends were much more important to me than romance seemed to be. And I feel, with the preponderance of love interests in most adult fiction, like Lord of the Rings was the first Grown Up Story where I saw that aspect of myself reflected.

What is your favorite/least favorite romantic trope?

My all-time favorite is enemies to friends to lovers. If you look closely at most of my favorite ships, they all fall into that category: Elizabeth/Darcy, Belle/Beast (Disney’s version, anyway), Ben/Leslie, Beatrice/Benedick (altho they sort of skip the friends bit), the entire relationship in You’ve Got Mail (and its predecessors). For me, it’s all about the witty banter. I’m in love with super annoyed quips that eventually turn fond. My parents are always teasing each other and so it’s probably some formative thing deep inside me that sees comfortable teasing as the ultimate act of love. I don’t always like this ship, but usually!

My second favorite is friends to lovers, done most excellently by Jim/Pam in the Office. My other favorites include Emma/Mr. Knightley, Ron/Hermione, the romance in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and a bunch of non-canon ships like Dean/Seamus. This one I really love because of the partnership aspect of it. I’m really into functional, partner romances.

A trope I don’t like is probably the geek guy gets the girl, that unpopular geek guy who obsesses over the popular girl for the entire movie/series and they eventually end up together. I don’t know why I dislike it. It’s probably a combination of personal preference and my feminism ruining everything. I don’t always dislike it (I can’t think of an example but I’m sure I don’t always dislike it), and I don’t hate it when it’s inverted with the geek girl longing over the popular guy. It’s just not for me.

I also dislike when fandom influences the writers of a show. I don’t like it when there is a enemy presented as truly Evil or somehow abusive to the main character (let’s say, Spike, or Logan) and then when the fandom pushes hard enough, it’s written as a great romance. I know this seems opposed to my all time favorite, but they usually skip the friends bit and the bantery bit and just go straight to making out. I usually don’t hate the ships that come out of it (I don’t mind or dislike Spike/Buffy, Logan/Veronica, or Emma/Hook), but it just annoys me. It annoys me because fandom also usually has a huge homosexual pairing they’re pushing that is largely ignored because the writers claim to have a plan or a vision when it’s clear they just don’t “see the character that way”. I don’t even usually like the big fandom gay pairings (not a huge Emma/Regina or Xander/Spike fan), I just don’t like that it’s so blatant. I don’t like that it’s clear writers will bend over backwards to write a relationship that fans want, as long as it’s not gay. It feels unfair to me. I don’t mind that writers take fans into account. I don’t mind popular fandom pairings. I just mind that it’s so clear what the writers think listening to is important.

Okay this turned into a big rant against television writers. What I really wanted to know is YOUR preferences. Send me your favorite and least favorite romantic tropes, with examples!

As observant as her brainy consulting detective is, there is a significant part of her that Irene has successfully kept from Sherlock.

She dances between the two worlds as she pleases, sending glows of energy with a slight flick of her wand, or weaving power networks via a few taps of keyboard on an intricate muggle device. She misbehaves with grace, taking joy in the best of both sides. Skilfully she keeps her worlds separate, a task proved increasingly difficult by the minute ever since the arrival of their son.

Nero has demonstrated signs of exceptional magical abilities from a very early age. Throw in the unquenchable curiosity, endless ideas for various forms of experimentation, plus a generous sprinkle of irrepressible mischief, and it’s the perfect recipe for mishaps to occur on a regular basis in their two-member household.

Despite what Sherlock has been led to believe, and aside from Irene’s own inclination to steer away from sentiment and domesticity, herein lies the principal reason why she’d declined his subtle and carefully worded suggestions for her and Nero to return to England, to London, with him.

Little did she know that a critical premise, one upon which she’d based her interactions with and decisions regarding the consulting detective, was on the verge of shattering. Or rather, it had been an erroneous assumption to begin with, and she was just about to uncover certain.. enlightening facts.

It didn’t exactly come as a surprise when her beaming 11-year-old boy showed her his second acceptance letter that summer, from the prestigious wizarding school across the Atlantic, a few centuries older than her own alma mater. (She was very pleased of course, even as Nero ended up choosing Hogwarts over Ilvermorny.)

Their shopping trip through Diagon Alley, however, did give her an inkling, when several strangers (around Sherlock’s age or a few years older) strode over to greet them with delight and enthusiasm. (“The youngest Holmes! Off to learn to become a brilliant wizard, now aren’t you? Excellent, excellent.” They said.)

What confirmed her suspicion with absolute certainty was the sight of a familiar impeccably cloaked and umbrella-wielding figure (the Minister, apparently, according to the whispers around her) on Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross.

Which meant a long talk with Sherlock was in order, Irene noted as she watched Nero hop on the train. Her expression spoke unmistakably of pride.

isn't your relationship really new? how are you handling being away from each other so soon? is it long term?

yah its pretty new. Not super long term but about 3 more months?

You just like.. deal with it? idk. We talk a lot and we’ll be doing a weekend soon. We’re both on the same page and because it’s really new neither of us are like.. really really intense about stuff. But we are both at a place where we want it to work so if it’s meant to it will kinda thing.

Like I figure if at the end of the 4 months we’re still good and wanna be together then we’ll be at a pretty good place. But if distance were to be a problem I would rather know now because it will for sure be a thing to deal with in my life.

I’ve actually had this rolling around in my head for weeks and it was funny when I first thought of it. Sometimes I am self-conscious of my dumb ideas.

To save money while attending college in NYC, Stiles and Derek decide to rent one tiny apartment together. With one bed.

*whispers* I have no idea if any of this is realistic. Don’t judge me.

You guys know by now that practically everything I write is so so fluffy, but this is just like, a whole other level. A little over 4k words of enemies-to-lovers, bed-sharing, & cuddling. ;)

The thing is, Stiles is pretty sure he can’t afford to breathe the air in New York City, let alone rent an apartment there. But it’s also been his lifelong dream to go to NYU, same as his mom, and he’s just gotten his acceptance letter in the mail along with a hefty scholarship offer. So he has a bit of a conundrum on his hands.

Enter Derek, who has a (relatively) dirt cheap apartment in Queens.

Okay, so Derek calls it an “apartment.” Stiles calls it an “attic closet.”

It’s nothing but a narrow bed, a foot or so of walking space between that and the wall, and a lone shelf by the door to hold the microwave and all of Derek’s possessions that can’t fit under the bed. There’s not even enough room to open the door all the way; the edge of the door hits the edge of the bed, and then you have to shimmy into the room.

The sad thing is that Stiles can’t even afford that.

He can, however, afford half of it.

“So you’re going to share a bed,” Scott says, looking concerned.

“Yes,” Stiles says.

“No,” Derek says at the same time.

Scott looks more concerned.

Stiles sighs. “Okay, so it’s like this. Derek’s going to be doing the whole normal person schedule, up at the buttcrack of dawn” (Derek rolls his eyes) “and out working and studying and stuff all day and back in bed asleep by 11 pm, and I’m going to be taking all evening classes and working the night shift!”

“We won’t actually ever be in the same place at the same time,” Derek clarifies. “He gets it during the day; I get it at night.”

“Because we can’t stand each other,” Stiles adds, in case Scott is thinking of getting his hopes up that this whole roommates thing is going to be some kind of bromance.

Decided to make one more before going to bed. That was actually not as easy as it might look? Idk.
