Just wanted to share this watercolor illustration that will be used as a book cover for the paperback version of 「江の島ねこもり食堂」(Enoshima Nekomori Syokudo). This is a novel published in Japan.

You can see how I painted this in a video I made:

Technical stuff:

  • Paper: HOLBEIN Waterford White 300g/m cold press cotton paper
  • Sketch: Procreate / iPad PRO
  • Line: Mitsu-bishi Hi-Uni Pencils
  • Colors: my main 48 colour Schmincke set

And this is how the image works as the part of the actual cover (I received the sample book today):

Sarah j Maas at the office creating the KOA cover: “yes, and then we put the main character in the middle. She has blond hair and a sword.”

Random guy creating the covers for bloomsbury: “Like on the other covers?”

Sjm: “yes please”

Cover guy: “say no more”

Fandom, seeing long hair:

ANNND another middle grade novel:
Front Desk by Kelly Yang! It was released at the end of May 2018.

Front Desk tells the story of 10-year-old Mia Tang. Every day, Mia manages the front desk of the Calivista Motel while her parents clean the rooms. She’s proud of her job. She loves the guests and treats them like family. When one of the guests gets into trouble with the police, it shakes Mia to her core. Her parents, meanwhile, hide immigrants in the empty rooms at night. If the mean motel owner Mr. Yao finds out, they’ll be doomed!

It was a very interesting collaborative process with my AD Maeve Norton and I love the cover we ended up with. Here shown are the first and second round of sketching, as well as the backcover.

Kelly’s debut novel received a lot of fantastic reviews everywhere, definitely a must-read for kids!
