The skinny: Booze, bombs, and infidelity, oh my!
The fat: This book was my first purchase from Persephone Books, and I don’t regret a thing. It’s a fun, fast, refreshing read. Laski’s tale of a soldier’s wife getting caught up in the whirlwind of glamour and extramarital romance in wartime London reads like Fitzgerald, but with the added bonus of having been written by a woman and therefore approaching everything from the grossly under- and misrepresented female perspective. Laski’s writing is perceptive, uncompromising, and caustically funny. You may not like anyone in this book, but you will find its anti-heroine and all her friends and boyfriends utterly convincing.
