I’m really happy with how these turned out. My 5-petal flower as a reproduction of a traditional Mesoamerican “foot flare” style, based on an Aztec shell plug from my personal collection. See the antique piece here.
I believe this would have been worn with the foot flipped upward, resting against the rear of the ear, and that would have made it quite stable. I think it could easily accommodate hanging beads or any number of additional embellishments without risk of falling out. I have to admit that I quite like the way it looks with the foot peeking out from behind the flower, also. The customer requested a matte finish and I think it adds a feeling of age that would not exist with a glossy wet look.
These were pretty challenging in shape, and there was a lot of hand carving and sanding that falls outside of what it takes to make a simple pair of standard plugs. I do enjoy a challenge, and I think the result was worth the extra planning and effort. They will be on their way to a new home soon, and it’s time for me to start working on the next beautiful custom project!
