I saw your ghost tonight. Or maybe it was the fog; some mad man’s meteorological invention to play with the mind and make children of us all. We become believers again of the frightening stories told in the velvet drape of near-midnight. We become believers again of memories we wished were dead.

That fog, it wound around me slow as I stood on the shore, choking on secondhand salt air, brine in my lungs. It embraced me at first and then it boa-constricted around me until I thought I couldn’t breathe, with those pinpricks of water in something not quite touch but almost breath, and it made the hairs on my arms stand straight up.

It’s these nights when I come stumbling to the water, half-full of rum but drunk only on remembering the way you would whisper to me at night—I always hated that—It’s these nights when I wonder if anyone but me has ever known what it means to be haunted.

You are trying, as always, to pull me to the water, like a siren who has lost her whore voice, but the fog twists around my unmoving feet and ankles still; the feline ghost of a dead girl. My face is wet but it is because of the salt spray. It must be, because I don’t cry for you, do I?

I yell my fuck you into the waves but they don’t care and you’re not listening because you’re in the ground some seven hundred miles away and you will never whisper in my ear again. So I turn my back on the pitching dark water and I drag my feet slow and clumsy over the sand, creating an uneven trail back toward the misted over haze of life, or at least a facsimile of it.

Not tonight, I tell the waves which are constantly hushing me, cutting through the ringing in my ears and cutting through the wall of suffocating fog. Not tonight, not tonight, not tonight.

Would you make me a Playlist? You had beautiful mess and great heights but my heart needs a Playlist of sweet, sad toned songs to listen to in bed in the dark. Stuff like I and love and you. You have some of the best music taste I know of

Ok, anon! I have a playlist called ‘Whoa’ and this is most of it. These are songs that kind of boa-constricted themselves around my heart in one way or another at some point. Incidentally, they’re also really good go-to-sleep songs. They’re not all sad, but some definitely are. And a lot of them are very sweet. Sleep tight, friend. :)
