Austin Seven/Morris Mini, 1959. Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, the BMC Mini was the first car to really take full advantage of the packaging opportunity offered by transverse engine placement. It was a sales hit though in fact BMC struggled to make any money out of it. Their use of transverse engines was quickly expanded up their range with the ADO16 (1100/1300) in 1962 and ADO17 (1800) in 1964
