ROCKSTARS Vol. 1: Nativity in Blacklight is out now, and collects the first story arc of the acclaimed Image Comics series by Joe Harris and Megan Hutchison and designed by me. Set in the world of 70s rock, the occult, and backwards messages I designed the whole series with a heavy nod to psychedelia, LSD, whilst referencing the design sensibilities of that era.
The book is available from all good comic shops, books stores, and Amazon.
Volume 2 kicks off in August when we shift the story to the 80s, and I got my Iron Maiden on for that one.
It had been the first thing I noticed when I first saw him. Sure his voice and his looks were contributing factors, but they weren’t the main reason for my unexpected fall to my knees. No, it was his smile.
His smile worked wonders on anyone it encountered. I remember the first time he flashed me that smile. It was in a grocery store. It was like any other day. I was minding my own business when all of a sudden, I heard the shrill cry of a bunch of screaming women.
You see, at first, my thought was that the store was getting robbed and everyone inside was being held hostage. But when I slowly approached the corner, I realized it was not the case.
A solid body ran straight into me, knocking me to the ground with a breathless “oof!”
“Jesus, I’m so sorry.”
I didn’t say anything as I tried rising to my feet. When I saw a hand outstretched to help me up, I finally looked up at the culprit.
And my heart stopped.
I didn’t know whether to scream or to pass out cold right then and there. Now, these things didn’t happen to me very often. Actually, then didn’t happen to me at all.
Who in the hell was lucky enough to see Jon Bon Jovi strolling through the grocery store on a Saturday night?
“You’re-” I began, but was suddenly cut short when the blue eyed rockstar flashed me a knee-weakening smile. It was a shy one, but it was still a smile.
“D'you want help or would you rather get trampled on in a couple of seconds?” His smile grew at my wide eyes and he bent over, taking my hand and pulling me up without waiting for my reply.
“Thank you,” I managed to say, my hand gripping his tighter without meaning to.
Jon smiled again, showing off his perfect teeth, making no intention of letting go of my hand. “No problem. Sorry for bumping into you, babe.”
Fuck. He called me babe.
The screaming got louder and I saw Jon’s smile waver slightly. And that’s when it clicked. How could I be so stupid?
I gripped his hand tighter and began walking back down the aisle. “C’mon. You can hide in the break room. At least until those girls leave.”
Jon eyed me confusedly. “Break room?”
I snorted. “Yeah. Totally forgot I worked here. Come on. It’s this way.”
I felt him grip tighter on my hand as he let me lead him toward the back of the store. When I looked back at him, I nearly bumped into the wall.
There was definitely something about that smile, man. And for some strange reason, I knew it wasn’t going to be the last time I saw it up close.
@slipperywhenwet95 here we go! *hides face* I hope I did that beautiful smile justice, although it friggin got me nervous writing something involving that sexy man LMFAO! Hope you enjoy it, babe! 💜💜
