Most of the things I know about Turalyon are from the books (Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal) and I just loved his friendship with Khadgar. That’s too perfect to see them smile and laugh. They were still so young. And now they’re reunited !! 💛
So I find the early concept Mercy as attractive as most people it seems–he is DREAMY–but we need more women characters period, so I’m glad she’s a woman so that the sex ratio is more balanced.
I wish they hadn’t reverted to something so generic for her design, though. The blonde angelic figure is–not creative (to put it lightly). I wish she had stayed black at the very least–there’s really no acceptable reason for them to change her so, so drastically.
I imagine the main argument for her redesign will be that Overwatch “needed to err on the side of caution when they first started out before they could ‘risk’ more diverse characters” but, one, that is some cowardly and far-too-prevalent bullshit, and two, then what about Fareeha and Symmetra? Why were they allowed to stay but a black woman character wasn’t?
I’m glad we got Lúcio and other POC from the very beginning, and that we got Ana, Efi, and Orisa after, but man, on the other hand it’s hard to ignore how the only white person in Talon is brainwashed (and would never have joined otherwise), while every single other Talon member is brown or black, with a big, muscled black man as the eugenicist and genocidal Big Bad, when we might have had an equally muscled but caring and gentle black man or woman to balance him out, but instead there’s an angel allegory
white blonde woman.
Blizzard does so well in some ways and so poorly in others, it’s like flipping a coin and having it land on its edge.
I decided to pick this up since I have a bunch of Amazon credit. It’s pretty neat! It retails for around $8. I can recommend it at that price point. Though it doesn’t really have anything you haven’t seen before, both in text and art.
