Chicago natives Lionfight are starting to make a name for themselves. They are opening for Breathe Carolina on the “We Are Savages” tour from 2/5 - 2/15. The band recently released their Self-Titled EP and have been getting a great response. I was able to talk to them about the EP, their tour and even some of their favorite scary movies.

1. For those of our readers who do not know you, please state your name and your role in the band.
My name is Nick and I am the vocalist.
Akash - I play guitars.
Bryan - I play bass.
Pete - I play the drumset.

2. What music or artist inspired you to start making your own music?

As a group, I would say we love mixing influences of metal, rock n’ roll, street punk, jazz, hip hop, and alternative rock.

3. How excited are you to be opening for Breathe Carolina and being on a big tour like this?

We are so stoked to be playing this tour not just for the opportunity but for the fun times ahead hanging out with our boys in Breathe Carolina and meeting Mod Sun and Ghost Town.  We love to chill with the bands we tour with and make good friends with talented people.

4. You released your Self-Titled EP just a few days ago, how has the response been?

The response has been great!  We are getting hundreds of downloads and all the responses we’ve received have been positive and uplifting and we couldn’t be happier and more grateful for everyone who has downloaded it.

5. What are some of your favorite scary movies?

We LOVE scary/psychological thriller movies, Hollywood and/or indie films such as Serbian Film, The Poughkeepsie Tapes, 1408, Extracted, American Psycho, Exam, and those are just a FEW of the many movies we watch and get inspired by.

6. Who came up with the name “Lionfight” and is there a story behind the name?

We came up with it on a past tour we did when we were in different bands, but shared the same van.  Our ex drummer thought of it and when he left, Pete came into the mix and we all agreed it fit our sound the best.

7. What are your guilty pleasures?

We all have our own personal guilty pleasures from making beats and freestyling, DJing at parties, to forming jam bands with friends, and watching footbal and hosting a fantasy league.

8. How do you kill time while on tour?

We love to eat, smoke herbs, adventure, and hang out with good friends we meet on the road.

9. It’s almost been a year since you guys formed the band, what are some obstacles you have faced in your career?

Very minor ones. Little disagreements here and there but we are a family and that means nothing stops is to getting to where we want to be. No matter what, we have unconditional love for each other as brothers and fellow musicians. Some obstacles also included towing of out van, mechanical problems and minor technical difficulties on stage

10. What does it mean to you to be in a band?
It means the world to us to be making music that not only changes our lives but others as well.  It’s just a plus that we get to also make money doing it, but we only need enough to get by comfortably.

Since 2009 he has been making music under the name T. Mills but he really started back when he was only 5 years old. Now on February 20th he will be going on a full national headlining tour with Blackbear & Mod Sun. I was able to sit down with the 24 year old artist and talk about when he started making music, how excited he is about getting back on the road, and what fans can expect from the show.

1. For those who do not know you, can you describe the sound of your music?
T. Mills: I feel like it is a very collective mix of everything I’ve grown-up listening to and what I am currently listening. I feel like I just come out of the studio and I’m inspired by everything and anything around me and I’m a product of the playlist generation.
Me: I’ve seen that your music has just grown and changed over the years since you started.
T. Mills: Yeah, like every year has just been a huge year for me, not only as an artist but also a person.

2. How was doing your first year on Warped Tour in 2012?
T. Mills: Yeah that shit was incredible! I didn’t really know what to expect you know? Like how we would be perceived or how the fans would be, but it was really, really fun. I call it like ‘The Rockstart Summer Camp’. Everyone was really nice and I made a lot of amazing friends. It was a great experience for all of us, and it was really fucking hot!

3. What inspired you to start making music?
T. Mills: My grandpa gave me a acoustic guitar when I was like 5 years old, so I was banging around on that, I’ve just always loved it. My family really isn’t that musical, but I was just addicted to it from a very young age. I actually played a song for my grandmas wedding with the guitar. In like 7th grade I started a garage band, we would play a local show, and that’s just where it started.

4. I did read somewhere that your debut album is coming out this year, is that true?
T. Mills: Yes it is. I am putting out my EP first though. I’m just going put out the single called “All I Wanna Do” and go on tour and I’m really excited for all the fans to come out and hear the new music!

5. I wasn’t sure if this was your first headlining tour?
T. Mills: It is my first headlining tour in like a while, I haven’t done one in a long time. I haven’t done a full national one though so this will be there first one that, I’m going to a lot of places I haven’t been before.

6. What can fans expect from the show?
T. Mills: Were just trying to make it fun and kinda a party. The VIP stuff were doing too is cool, they get to come in early, watch the soundcheck, see the merch we have lined up for them,  and I really like spending time with my fans before the show. There they get to see the quitter, calm, not so sweaty side Travis.

7. I want to take this away from music for a bit, but last year you had sewn up your ears, what made you want to do that?
T. Mills: Well, I’ve had my ears like that for almost 10 years. I just felt like everything I could have wanted with having those, I did. People like think “Oh You closed your ears so you don’t like body modifications anymore” but when really what I did was the most extreme part because I cut my ear lobes off. I didn’t go to a plastic surgeon to get them sewn up, I went to a piercer (Adam Dabs). It was just me closing another chapter in my life. I don’t have heavy things hanging on my ears anymore, and I always had to be more careful with them and I just am way happier now to be honest. I put a lot of time into this because I wanted it to be right, I found the right person to do it.

8. What would you want to be doing right now if you weren’t making music?
T. Mills: Nothing.
Me: Nothing?
T. Mills: Sitting on the couch. I just don’t really have an answer for that, but when I do, I will start doing that and stop making music.
Me: There wasn’t like a childhood job you wanted?
T. Mills: I wanted to be a marine biologist like when I was really little. I mainly wanted to work at SeaWorld and swim with the dolphins but after seeing Blackfish, I’m super happy that I didn’t do that.

9. How does it feel when fans have tattoos dedicated to you or even your face & lyrics tattooed on them?
T. Mills: It feels amazing and overwhelming. Someone dedicated a piece of time real-estate on their body forever. I’m very grateful and I want to make sure to spend as much time with them as I can to hear their story for why they want the tattoo and what they were going through when they got it. That’s a big deal to get someone or even lyrics tattooed, that’s meaningful.
Me: Yeah that’s crazy, especially even your face!

T. Mills: Yeah! My mom wouldn’t even get my face tattooed on her! I love the dedication and I admirer it.

10. What do you like to do on your off days?
T. Mills: I watch a lot of Netflix and Hulu Plus, I’ve just burning through them. I also have a puppy, I go on a 5 mile hike everyday with him. I’ve been getting really healthy this year so I do a lot of hikes.
Me: Anything else?

T. Mills: I like throwing massive ragers! Nahh but there’s a lot of marijuana every single night.
Me: That reminds me, a lot of people have wondered what do you do with weed from fans or will you smoke with them?

T. Mills: I smoke it!
Me: Well like are you ever nervous if something up with it or not?

T. Mills: I did have this one dude try to give me spice. He was like “Yo, you wanna smoke a blunt” And he gave it to me and it was spice. That was the only sketchy thing.
