Bad Take - NYT: Opinion | Democrats and the Losing Politics of Contempt
The party expresses itself chiefly in the language of self-affirmation and moral censure.
“Whatever happened to the party of the president who was centrist, cheerful, liked Americans just as they are — and left the party in far better shape than Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama?”
The status quo is untenable. People are waking up.
They’re waking up to the violence and the death that is inflicted upon black people by police. They’re waking up to widening income inequality that is bleeding the vast majority of Americans while the rich line their pockets. They’re waking up to the rampant sexism that keeps women from fulfilling their lives as they choice to live them. They’re waking up to the brutality of gun violence and the insanity of watching children massacred while Washington does nothing to stop it.
Where did the “party of the president who was centrist” go? It’s gone, and good riddance. It’s time to fight for a better future, not close our eyes and pretend what we have is enough.
