The entire coven is watching, waiting for him. Castiel is Naomi’s only son, and Michael’s eldest, there are expectations about this examination. Both sides of his family have held high priest and priestess positions in this coven for centuries. A few have even led it. To say that the coven is counting on him to make a good show is in no way an exaggeration.

Last year his sister Hannah chose an easier art for her debut, transfiguration. Not that it’s actually easy in any way, especially considering the complexity of the creature she made, but it’s not quite on par with necromancy.

Castiel chose this because it’s what his father used for his final test more than twenty years ago. John is still standing at his father’s side, strong and loyal. This is a way of impressing the coven, yes, but more than that, this is a chance to make his father proud.
