Black History Month: NCAA Gymnasts

February 2nd- Kennedi Edney (LSU)

Kennedi Edney (born August 14th 1998) is a former level 10 gymnast who is currently a freshman at Louisiana State University, majoring in sociology. She did her club training at Precision Gymnastics under Trent and Jill Spaulding. 

Pre-collegiate achievements:

  • Seven-time JO Level 10 National Champion 
  • 2012 and 2014 Nastia Liukin Cup Qualifier
  • Took home every all-around title in every meet she competed in during the 2015 season

Collegiate Bests: 

  • Vault: 9.950
  • Bars: 9.925
  • Beam: 9.950
  • Floor: 9.925

Collegiate Achievements (to date):

  • SEC Gymnast of the Week (01/31/2017)
  • SEC Freshman of the Week (01/09/2017)
  • Has won four individual titles in the first four meets of the 2017 season

February 1st- Aja Sims (Alabama) 

Aja Sims (born October 4th 1995) is a former level 10 gymnast, who is currently a senior at the University of Alabama, majoring in exercise science. She did her club training at Brandy Johnson’s Global Gymnastics under Kelly Pitzen and Brandy Johnson. 

Pre-collegiate Achievements:

  • 2012 JO All-Around, Balance Beam and Uneven Bars National Champion 
  • 2011-2012 JO National Junior Olympic Team Member
  • Graduated from high school early to join Alabama team in January 2014

Collegiate Bests:

  • Vault: N/A
  • Bars: 9.950
  • Beam: 9.975
  • Floor: 9.975

Collegiate Achievements (to date):

  • Named to the President’s list her sophomore and junior years (4.0 GPA)
  • SEC Freshman of the Week (2/18/2014)

Alica Boren (born February 12th 1997) is a former level 10 gymnast who is currently a sophomore at the University of Florida, majoring in women’s studies. She did her club training at North Stars Gymnastics Academy under Tony Gehman. 

Pre-collegiate Achievements:

  • Four-time JO Level 10 National All-Around Champion 
  • Three-time US JO National Team Member
  • Four-time Nastia Liukin Cup Competitor

Collegiate Bests:

  • Vault: 9.950
  • Bars: 9.900
  • Beam: 9.925
  • Floor: 9.950

Collegiate Achievements (to date):

  • 2016 First-team All-American on the balance beam

February 17th- Khazia Hislop (North Carolina)

Khazia Hislop (born June 30th 1998) is a former senior international gymnast who competed for Trinidad and Tobago while training at Brestyan’s Gymnastics in the United States. She is currently a freshman at the University of North Carolina, majoring in sports administration. 

Pre-collegiate Achievements:

  • Former Trinidad and Tobago National Team Member
  • 2013, 2014 and 2016 JO US National Team Member
  • 2014 Commonwealth Games Qualifier (unfortunately did not compete due to injury)

Collegiate Bests:

  • Vault: N/A
  • Bars: N/A
  • Beam: 9.900
  • Floor: 9.925

Collegiate Achievements (to date):

  • Three-time EAGL Freshman of the Week so far in the 2017 NCAA season
  • Has scored above 9.8 in 8 of 10 collegiate routines
  • Won her first event title of her career against Pittsburgh with a 9.900 on beam
