black breastfeeding

AmamenTHE by Dayne Dantas

When it came to breastfeeding, I was torn. I was never breastfed, my mother was never breastfed, and I had never known another mother who breastfed. I was scared. I thought it’d be weird… But after tons and tons of research I decided that it would be the best thing for myself and my child (mind you 6 weeks postpartum I had already lost the 45lbs I gained…. Shout out to breastfeeding).

After giving birth to my beautify baby boy (which wasn’t that bad and I’d do it again and again if I had to) just 2 hrs later I was up and moving ready to see my baby boy latch. I witnessed this same lactation specialist coach and encourage this Caucasian woman with her baby and I was pumped to feed my baby (I should clarify, that the previously mentioned encounter was during a lactation and breastfeeding class that the hospital organized prior to me giving birth). Well, it didn’t really work out that way. My baby boy was having a little difficulty latching, nothing unusual. But I was a little pissed when the specialist INSISTED I bottle feed my baby because he wasn’t immediately latching. And I’m just like what the hell happened to the encouragement??? 1 hour and 44 minutes after our first attempt my baby boy was a breastfeeding champ and 2 months later of exclusively breastfeeding we are stronger than ever.

I always wondered why black women were so low in numbers when it came to breastfeeding, maybe it has something to do with the lack of support in the hospital and at home but mostly it’s the lack of knowledge. So all my expecting moms, black, white, green, or blue I encourage you to choose your baby when it comes to breastfeeding! It may not be right for you but it’s best for your baby!

There are Facebook groups that have kept me enlightened and encouraged throughout this process.

Blessings from
Caleb and his breastfeeding Mommy

*Woman breast feeds her baby*
Men: that nasty b*tch, you know she a hoe
*woman switches breast feeding her baby to bottles with using formula*
Not realizing breast feeding strengthens the baby’s jaw, strengthen immune system, creates a bond & so much more. Baby lacks those things & has possible complications because of it down the line.
Men: we don’t give a damn. If she ain’t playing with her titties for us then put them up. You b*tches need to understand. Titties are for men & pleasing. I don’t want to hear that bullsh*t.

It looks extremely likely that America has just elected a racist, sexist, homophobic and xenophobic misogynist as President of the United States. Donald Trump is now arguably the most powerful person in the world.

Just let that sink in for a few minutes…

This is a man who has bragged about sexually assaulting women.

This is a man who has openly mocked people with disabilities and repeatedly called a deaf woman “retarded.”

This is a man who has called women dogs, fat pigs, slobs, bimbos, not attractive enough to assault and responded to massive claims of sexual assault in the military with this: “What did [those] geniuses expect when they put men and women together?”

How should you treat a woman, according to Donald Trump? “You have to treat ‘em like shit.” A father who changes his child’s diaper, according to Trump, is “acting the wife.”

This is a man who has claimed he saw “thousands and thousands” of Muslims cheering when planes struck the World Trade Center, a claim that has been resoundingly debunked.

This is a man who has called for Mosques to be shut down, for the creation of a database system to track every single Muslim and for all of them to be banned from entering the United States.

This is a man who has called laziness an inherent “trait” in black people, called a breastfeeding woman “disgusting” and believes that women should be “punished” for having abortions.

This is a man who has called Mexican immigrants “rapists,” consistently retweeted white supremacists and Nazi sympathisers on Twitter and was officially endorsed by the Klu Klux Klan.

This is a man who has repeatedly called into question whether or not Barack Obama, the first black president of the United States, was actually born there and not secretly a Muslim. His claims have been repeatedly debunked. That hasn’t stopped him.

This is a man who chose Mike Pence as his running mate. Pence believed that same-sex couples should be jailed for applying to get married, complained about the passage of a bill designed to protect LGBT people from hate crimes, believed that openly gay people should not be allowed to join the military and harm “unit cohesion” by promoting “their liberal domestic social agenda,” and wanted to divert funding from HIV prevention into gay “conversion therapy.”

Mike Pence is now Vice President of the United States. He and Trump will have full control of the House, the Senate and the Supreme Court to pass whatever laws and policies they see fit.

Trump is a man who responded to the worst massacre of LGBT people in American history by tweeting that he appreciated the thanks for “being right on radical Islamic terrorism.”

49 people were dead and 53 others were injured.

The environment isn’t safe: Donald Trump believes that global warming is a hoax perpetrated by “the Chinese.”

Democracy isn’t, either: Trump repeatedly refused to accept the result of the election and concede if he lost, threatening a democratic process that has existed since 1860.

For minorities in the United States, his election poses a very real and immediate threat to their wellbeing.

For those of us overseas, the attitudes Trump represents and promotes have the potential to be just as damaging.

There are many, many people who don’t feel safe right now. That is not hyperbole. That is fact. Please, please support them.

Remind your LGBT friends that they are loved. Remind your Muslim friends of their right to religious freedom. Remind your friends with learning and developmental disabilities that they deserve to be respected and supported. Remind the women in your life that they are loved, respected and just as valued as men. And if you fall into any of these categories, please know that I - and many others - are on your side, even though it doesn’t seem that way right now.

Donald Trump may have secured the Presidency, but please don’t let him and his backward ideologies win.
