birth control pills for men

I’m a trans man who wants a birth control method that gets rid of my periods and doesn’t contain estrogen. Whatcha got for me?

Someone asked us:

Hi. I’m a trans man, but I can’t afford to go on testosterone yet. My menstrual cycle really bothers me, and I may start having sex with men soon, but the estrogen in birth control pills (and the symptoms that result ‘cuz of that) makes that really, REALLY not an option I want to take. Is there any method of birth control that does not contain estrogen? Preferably one that also gets rid of periods? (Preferably one that’s also likely to be covered by my crappy insurance?)

Believe it or not, you have a lot of options to choose from!

There are quite a few hormonal birth control options that don’t contain estrogen. These “progestin-only” methods include: the implant (Implanon or Nexplanon), hormonal IUDs (Mirena, Skyla, and Liletta), the shot (Depo Provera), and even some kinds of birth control pills.

Many of these methods have been shown to lessen menstrual bleeding – and sometimes even eliminate it (though it’s common to have some spotting, especially for the first few months). Speak with your nurse or doctor to figure out which of these options fits your needs best.

And let’s not forget about the good ol’ condom. Condoms are the only way to protect yourself from STDs as well as pregnancy, so it’s a great idea to use them even if you’re also on another form of birth control.

Under the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare), most types of birth control are now covered by insurance. Learn more

I hope this helps!

Tips to Write Smut (aka sex)

Again, I posted something like this a while ago on my band blog - where I do actively write smut - but this one is new and revised! Please note: this only covers heterosexual smut, I’m sorry.

So for the (non-slash) fanfiction writers out there, here’s some more tips: (actually, some of these will work for slash as well)

What is your ideal trans Peter fic ?

*rubs hands* okay so I’d honestly kill for more happy fics. There’s a lot of trans angst out there and I just wanna read about my boy being loved. I want more fics about Peter hanging out with the people he cares about, but he just *happens* to wear a swim binder to the pool, or he just *happens* to need to do a T shot. More mundane shit, ya know? Smut fics are a’ight too, so long as Peter is an adult and the author knows what they’re doing.

I instantly dislike fics with any of the following:

  • Unsafe binding (with ace bandages, ect.) bc there’s no excuse for that.
  • Peter being #stealth and then getting outed against his will (usually when someone goes help him after he’s been injured)
  • Peter’s anatomy being referred to with female-coded words (ex: “tits” instead of “chest”, or “clitoris” instead of “dick”)
  • Pregnancy prevention via birth control pill (not safe for men on T)
  • The tr*nny slur. oh my god please stop using this in fics

what do u think is the biggest problem males face today?

Selective service: If someone in the United States is born male, from the age of eighteen to twenty-six they are considered government property. If World War III broke out right now, the government can take any born male they want, including (but not limited to): trans women, physically disabled men, mentally disabled men, single fathers, and only sons. Women don’t have to do it. Why? Just because. They even require illegal immigrants to sign up, and say nothing about providing them with citizenship. As a man, if you don’t sign up before the age of twenty-six, you can be fined $250,000, denied a trial, get up to five years in prison, are denied student loans and federal job training, and you are technically not a citizen. It can make it harder to get a driver’s license, financial aid, and to pursue employment.

Circumcision: It’s male genital mutilation, let’s be frank about it. Female genital mutilation is completely illegal in first world countries, while circumcision is still legal. It has little to no health benefits, and it’s primarily done for religious or aesthetic reasons. Basically, some Jewish doctor made up a bunch of fake health benefits back in the ‘50s so he could keep cutting off parts of a baby’s dick. It kills around 117 infants a year and has many adverse affects on the psyche and body. Eleven babies in New York City contracted herpes from a Jewish circumcision ritual. Here’s an article about the myths doctors will tell you about circumcision. Circumcision is harmful, and violates a man’s right to bodily autonomy.

False rape claims: Here’s a post debunking the “it’s only two percent” claim. And a masterpost of sources about false rape claims. If a man is accused of rape, he can lose his job, custody of his kids, and even his home. Not to mention that the family of the alleged victim might go after him. MRAs wanted a law passed that the accused name was not allowed in papers until he was charged, not convicted, but charged, but some feminists fought against this, causing it to fail. Also see here, the London Feminist Network campaigning for it to fail. Here’s an interesting article about false rape claims. Most famously, and most recently, Emma Sulkowitz lied about her supposed rape for attention.

Actual rape: Even by conservative numbers, male rape victims in prisons far outnumber female rape victims. About 7.7 percent of those in juvenile detention reported sexual contact with staff during the preceding year. The number of rape reports in prison is over 140,000 a year. Over 90 percent of these cases involved female staff and teenage boys in custody (this is from the same link). The UK’s biggest male rape center had it’s funding cut to zero, despite a 120% increase in reports. Here’s a petition to get funding for the center. Male sexual assault victims aren’t even accounted for by the CDC.

Domestic violence: Men want equal treatment when victims of domestic violence, and to not be arrested for the crime of “being male” under primary aggressor policies. Some feminists fought against this by trying to suppress evidence showing that half of domestic violence is done by women, by threatening the researchers with bomb threats, death threats, etc. Modern, younger feminists are doing it as well. The feminist definition of domestic violence has skewed arrest and prosecution philosophies, resulting primarily in having only male batterers criminally pursued. Women are actually more likely to be perpetrators, and it’s harder for men to be taken seriouslyMale victims of domestic abuse have a 47% chance to be threatened by police, 35% of being completely ignored, and a 21% chance of being arrested themselves.Of the abused men who called domestic violence hotlines, 64% were told that they “only helped women.” In 32% of the cases, the abused men were referred to batterers’ programs. Another 25% were given a phone number to call that turned out to be a batterers’ program. A little over a quarter of them were given a reference to a local program that helped. Sixteen percent said the people at the hot line “dismissed or made fun of them.”

Parental rights: Currently, in the United States, a man has two options if he gets a woman pregnant: pay child support and just assume it goes to supporting that child or go to prison. In France, a male asking for a paternity test is against the law. So a woman can name a man as the father and even if he isn’t, he still has to pay child support. The male birth control pill that goes around Tumblr every few months was not declined because men couldn’t handle the effects, instead some feminists fought against it because it would give a man too much power in the situation.

This is a link to my favorite article by Paul Elam, who has written some great articles about men’s problems.

TL;DR, men have problems, too. This is not meant to take away from female problems, but to bring attention to the issues men face.

Plan B, y'all

Let’s talk about unplanned and/or unprotected sex and emergency contraception (Listen up, guys, I mean you!) Given the increasing hostility toward abortion, every sexually-active hetero male who relies on condoms or on their partner being on birth control should have emergency contraception on hand (the morning-after pill: Plan B, Preven, Take Action, Etc). Condoms break, and unplanned sex happens, and if you really want to make sure you don’t impregnate someone, emergency contraception (EC) is what you should offer your lady (within in 72 hours).
The morning-after pill works primarily by delaying ovulation. It also supposedly, in many women, irritates the lining of the uterus in such a way as to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. Once an egg has implanted in the uterine wall, a woman is pregnant, and the EC pill won’t do anything, so it is important the pill be taken as soon as possible after sex.
Emergency Contraceptives are available in most pharmacies in most States (as well as Target and Walmart). They are not cheap: They usually run $30 to $50, which is why the guys should step up and accept responsibility for their part. If you’re too squeamish to buy a box of EC at your local pharmacy, or too broke to buy one, you might as well swear off sex–because you can’t afford a baby or an abortion, either.
Until such time as there is a birth control pill for men, you fellas should be packing EC. It is time for men to buy contraceptives, not just condoms, and help shoulder the burden of preventing pregnancy.

Many attempts are being made to bring about the long-awaited birth control pill for men. For example, Dr. John Amory of the University of Washington is revisiting 1950s research trials on male prisoners in the hopes of finding a way to stop the sperm maturation process. Tash and his team are looking to get a drug called Gamendazole into human clinical trials, and Parsemus is researching what it calls the “Clean Sheets Pill,” a drug that allows for male orgasm while inhibiting ejaculation. The result could potentially be an oral contraceptive that also reduces the transmission of HIV.

Birth Control: The New Options Men May Have in the Future

Hella cisnormative language in the link above — dig the title — but some interesting medical research nonetheless.

Why no one likes SJWs

I don’t know if social justice warriors know that people hate them. I’d say even more that these people are even more oblivious to why people can’t stand them. So much so that they’ll toss out every other reason under the sun for why people avoid them. Every reason but the one that holds weight.

I think it really begins with the desire to know why people suffer. Some people are capable of understanding that no one answer covers the vast number of people suffering on this planet. There are a variety of circumstances, as to why people are in a state of peril.

Yet the social justice warrior will not accept that. They need to have an answer, even if it means accepting the most bullshit interpretations of society imaginable. They’ll come to the conclusion that we can’t have peace because of sexism, racism, and a variety of other -isms.

Punching Gloria Steinem: inside the bizarre world of anti-feminist women

Jessica Valenti: How do you make sense of women who think the Hobby Lobby decision is ‘great’, college rape is 'inflated’ and pay gaps don’t exist?

Oh where do I begin? Remember in my last post where I mentioned that feminism was only interested in a certain kind of woman rather than all women, but that they were hesitant to admit that?

Well folks Jessica Valenti, founder of, has gone full retard. But then that would be an insult to the mentally handicapped. Maybe the correct terminology would be that she has gone full cunt. Because really this has to be seen to be believed.

For those that don’t speak bat shit insanese, I will translate. She is essentially saying that feminism gave women the right to choose, (which is horse shit) and then proceeds to shame women for making, what Valenti feels is the wrong choice.

What Jessica Valenti fails to understand is that she and other feminists don’t get to choose for those women. They get to choose what they feel is right for themselves. They can choose to be anti-abortion and anti-birth control if they want.

That is their choice and that is what freedom of choice is about. It is for this reason that feminists have lost so much ground. They have cast women out for not being liberal enough. If women want to dress conservatively, get married, and be a stay at home mom, that is their choice. A woman is not brainwashed for choosing that. I may not personally agree with those traditionalist lifestyles, but as long as it’s a woman’s choice to make, we should let them.

The suffragettes in the US were often heavily religious and heavily conservative women, but second wave feminists cast those kinds of women out of the movement. They are almost non-existent in third wave feminism, because it was hijacked long ago by women who feel that marriage is almost a form of sexual slavery.

While moderate feminists who are the so called “rational” or “nice” feminists sit in the middle, feminists like Jessica Valenti are the ones having their voices heard. Their message is clear.

Which is that feminism is not really about freedom of choice or equality. It’s about giving certain kinds of women that think alike, certain rights and privileges. What they fail to understand is that their lifestyle doesn’t suit every woman.

As an Atheist and someone that often leans left of center, I’ll admit that it was difficult for me to understand people that were more conservative, but despite these differences in opinion I am able to respect their personal choices. Something that Jessica Valienti fails to do.

She goes on to shame people that vote conservative, and to paint anti-feminists with the same brush. Saying that we’re all conservatives that are hurting women as a whole. When in reality feminism is probably the worst thing to happen to women ever.

Women might have pushed for the right to have access to birth control, but a man invented the first birth control pill. A man signed those things into law, and men signed off on Roe vs. Wade. So much for the idea of an evil patriarchy fucking everything up. Feminism is only one part of a larger story, and to only mention that one part is lying by omission.

To portray conservative women as submissive mindless zombies is not only intellectually dishonest, but insulting. I know conservative atheists and skeptics that are fairly smart and well-educated. I also know of liberals that are prone to magical thinking.

Your political alignment has almost nothing to do with your ability to think critically, but that doesn’t keep feminists from portraying conservatives as the fucking devil.

Which is really what this is about. It is fairly easy for people like Jessica Valenti to talk about the privileged anti-feminists while making a living as a professional feminist. Pot meet Kettle.

It’s even easier for her to cherry pick the most ridiculous things like bringing back hope chests and the one crazy chick that thinks women shouldn’t vote to make her arguments, when really they fall on their face. Misinformation comes from both sides of this argument, making her examples pretty much useless.

Things like the mythical pay gap, the 1 in 4 rape statistic, and the bullshit about drunken sex being rape by default. Then there’s Anita Sarkeesian’s spread of hysteria surrounding the portrayal of women in video games, saying that it causes real rape without any actual statistics to back it up. There’s Laci Green who goes around talking about how sexual objectification contributes to rape culture, but only when it happens to women. There’s Suey Park who perpetuates the idea that white people have this kind of inherent power to the point that the very act of them disagreeing with her is racism. We have feminists like Rebecca Watson that will call an invite to coffee sexual harassment, but will speak fondly on the prospect of drunken sex. Then there’s feminist Melody Hensley who claims she got PTSD from people disagreeing with her on twitter.

Yet these feminists can’t seem to understand why the average woman has absolutely no interest in modern feminism. Gee I dunno maybe because the people heading the feminist movement have always been ten kinds of crazy. Maybe it’s that the average woman is smarter than she was 100 years ago.

Whatever the case may be, freedom of choice is not the freedom to choose whatever feminists want you to choose. It’s the freedom to make an educated decision. It’s also the freedom to make stupid decisions. It’s the freedom to make decisions about your body based on religion or a lack of religion.

That is the meaning of choice. Not everyone is best served by the ultra liberal feminist lifestyle, and the sooner feminists understand that, the closer they will be to actually learning something about humanity as a whole. In short Jessica Valenti is an idiot that has her head so far up her own ass that she’s basically speaking to her colon. The result is a series of fart noises resembling human speech.

ANYWAY I’ve switched to a book that’s like, a brief history of the birth control pill in America, and there’s this:

“Meanwhile, it was the men - especially those who considered themselves among the cultural avant-garde - who led the public charge for sexual liberation. They hoped to break down the barriers of prudery and restraint, but with little regard for the reproductive consequences, and even less interest in women’s empowerment. Among the most visible and outspoken proponents of sexual freedom in the 1950′s and early 1960s were the Beats… Although the Beats included some “chicks” in their circle, the culture of male bonding and adventure among them was notoriously sexist… The Beat philosophy of sexual freedom did not necessarily include women’s right to use contraception, which would thwart men’s procreative powers. Beat poet Richard Brautigan expressed this sentiment in his poem “The Pill Versus The Springhill Mine Disaster”:

When you take your pill

it’s like a mine disaster

I think of all the people

lost inside of you

The poem, dedicated to his girlfriend at the time, equated the pill with the 1958 mining disaster in Springhill, Nova Scotia, in which trapped miners died.”

I mean fuck a Beat poet but what a colossal dick move to write a poem about how bad the pill is and dedicate it to your girlfriend so EVERYONE KNOWS she’s on the pill and you’re not cool with it

The Male Birth Control Pill Is Coming!

Besides condoms and vasectomies, there isn’t much men can do to share the responsibility in birth control. But not for long! Now, researchers have developed a pill that can temporarily render a male mouse infertile. Is it too good to be true? Laci Green reports on the details and how soon this contraceptive pill could be available to men.
