I am so enamoured with the shades of the House Finches. Some of them had a steady diet of red berries in the summer and are just so vibrant, while others do not stick out as much, but still look all proud and pretty.
This little guy is one of the most frequent visitors right now. I love Redbreasted Nuthatches because of their calls - they sound like a morse machine - and also for their spirit. They are one of the only birds who does not take off when I come to the feeder. Such a fun bird to have around!
The American Midwest is locked in a deep freeze. The landscape is banal; gray trees and brown fields and crusty snow. Seemed like a perfect time for a reminder: The brilliant colors of Spring are coming. They are coming.
Goldfinches are not uncommon, but somehow I am not having many around this year. It might be because I stopped feeding nyjer seed. It is just so messy. They do love sunflower seed hearts though, so hopefully they will become a bit more frequent.
