I spent my day at the WBEA science integration workshop getting some higher level insights into the work we’re involved in up in the Alberta Oil Sands Region (AOSR). Turns out these lobed, leaf-like (foliose) lichen are pretty handy for air quality monitoring in the boreal. They are ubiquitous in the region, pretty resilient to exposure, and tend to accumulate constituents which can used to trace back to the source. Last year’s collections picked up some particulate matter a chemical signature (Pb isotopes) originating in Asia.
