How To: Curl Short Hair

You may know Birchbox staffer Whitney as one of our dedicated discovery specialists, but what you probably don’t know is that she’s also a creative genius at work behind the scenes of our video program. Since she’s a hairstyling wiz to boot, we recently dragged her out from behind the camera to show off her skills with a curling iron on her newly-chopped hair. Watch the video above to learn how to transform a short bob into a curly style, perfect for a Saturday night out or getting prepped for the holiday party season.

Who says girls with long hair get to have all the fun? Let us know in the comments what your favorite short hair styles are—we may just persuade Whitney to make another tutorial!

Our Favorite 5-Minute Holiday Hair Tutorial

We’re well into holiday party season, and that means you need some new tricks for wowing your friends, family and coworkers—especially when you’re going straight from the office to the party. Our favorite style this season is an upside-down roll, also known as a Gibson roll. It takes less than five minutes but looks like it requires way more effort. Watch as we show you how to create this sophisticated updo.

Madewell is one of our go-to spots for laidback-cool outfits—our office basically lives in their clothes year round. Two words: FANCY. PANTS.

VIDEO: Getting Easy-Breezy Waves is as Simple as Using This 1 Tool

Lately I’ve been a little obsessed with wavy hair. My hair naturally dries stick straight and has a bad habit of flattening out evenafter I’ve spent hours blow-drying, curling, and hairspraying it. Call it a case of the grass is always greener, but I’m loathe to step out of my apartment without at least a little wave in my strands.

So when Birchbox staffer (and former proprietor of an underground salon in her dorm room) Bridgette offered to show us how to curl hair using Sedu’s genius clipless curling iron, I jumped at the chance to get her on set. Watch the video after the jump to learn her technique for natural-looking, never over-done waves.

VIDEO: Smoky Eye 101

A great smoky eye is something every woman should have in her makeup wheelhouse. It’s universally flattering and dresses up any outfit. White t-shirt and jeans? Throw on some heels and a smoky eye and you’re ready for a night out. Since smoky eyes usually involve dark (if not black) eyeshadow, most women we know are a little intimidated to try them at home. But it’s surprisingly easy! Watch as Birchbox staffer Deepica breaks down the steps to the perfect smoky eye.

Sets like stila’s in the light eyeshadow palette are an easy way to get everything you need for a smoky eye in one place.

VIDEO: Liquid Liner Troubleshooting

Liquid liner is classic and chic—but only if you know how to apply it. Our latest favorite from British brand Eyeko is so easy to use you’ll be sporting a daring cat eye pronto. And don’t worry if you’re a little out of practice. Watch our video for troubleshooting tips and quick shortcuts that will help you get the perfect line.

Eyeko’s Skinny Liquid Liner comes in punchy Olive and Turquoise—perfect for adding a flash of color.

LIMITED TIME ONLY! Shop Lancôme on

As you might have seen in the Birchbox February Sneak Peek, we’re working with one of our all-time favorite brands this month: Lancôme! Starting today, Lancôme products will be available on for a limited time only. In celebration, we asked a few staffers why they’re fans of the brand, and we got so many amazing stories—from memories of saving up for those covetable Juicy Tubes to the products they can’t live without to this day—that we decided to share a few of our Lancôme makeup moments with you. Watch what our staffers had to say and then tell us your Lancôme moment in the comments below.

VIDEO: Hunger Games-Inspired Dutch Braid

If you’ve mastered the French braid already, it’s time to move on to something a bit more advanced. Watch this week’s tutorial, where Mollie shows us how to get a Dutch braid. If it looks familiar it’s probably because we’re drawing inspiration from Katniss Everdeen, the awesome heroine of the Hunger Games.

How To: Fake Looking Awake

With Fashion Week Month starting this week (plus school getting back underway), you might be missing more sleep than usual. Birchbox’s Eric Neher has tips for looking awake, even when you’ve been up all night.

VIDEO: How To: Edgy Hair Style

Pretty waves or straight hair are okay for everyday but sometimes we want our hair to look a little bit cooler. Try this edgy half up style on your next night out. All you need is a hair serum, bobby pins, a teasing brush, and hairspray. Would you try this yourself? Let us know in the comments or better yet, send us pictures or videos!

VIDEO: How To: Get "Gossip Girl" Waves

Our office has been buzzing about the “Gossip Girl” season finale, which airs tonight. To get ready for this season’s last episode, we’ve been practicing our favorite hair looks from the show and watching this video tutorial featuring the “Gossip Girl” lead hairstylist, Jennifer Johnson. Here, she demonstrates how to get a modern Brigitte Bardot style, also known as “Serena van der Woodsen waves.” Watch the clip and let us know if you try the look yourself!

And don’t forget to watch"Gossip Girl" with us tonight at 8/7c on the CW—we’ll be live tweeting throughout the show! Also, be sure to enter our trivia contest for a chance to win a $500 shopping spree!

We chatted with the show’s lead makeup artist, too. Check out her pro mascara tip.

VIDEO: How To: Bronze Smoky Eye

We love a good smoky eye but sometimes black and grey eyeshadow can be a little overwhelming. That’s why we enlisted Neil Scibelli, national makeup artist for Jouer, to teach us a metallic smoky eye that anyone can do at home. Watch the video and then let us know in the comments: would you give this look a spin?

Our Favorite July 2011 Birchbox Un-Boxing Videos!

August Birchboxes are on the way—and some have already arrived—but we thought we’d take a few minutes to look back at a few of our favorite July un-boxing videos. Thank you to all of you who sent in your videos. We loved watching them! These are just a few of our favorites!

NicolaFoti is one of a select few male Birchbox members so we were extra interested to hear his take on the Cynthia Rowley box! Our entire office loved this one!

LEIGHANNSAYS made her first Birchbox video last month and she’s already become one of our favorite YouTubers! We’ve spent waaay too much time watching her videos.

Somehow last month was the first time we’ve seen PlainJaneMakeup’s videos but we fell in love with her intro immediately! Plus, we love the idea of un-boxing parties and opening the box with a friend is double the fun.

Those are our favorites for July! Hope you keep making your videos and don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for tutorials and tips. Take a look at all the products featured in these videos on our website

VIDEO: Madewell + Birchbox: 5 Fashion Must-Haves for Fall

If you walked around the Birchbox office on any given day, you’d probably see at least 20 of our staffers sporting outfits from Madewell. It’s not the official dress code, but it might as well be. Not only is our HQ located just a few blocks from one of their stores, but their collections always strike the right balance of cool and casual. That’s why we were thrilled to have a chance to interview Madewell’s Head Designer, Kin Ying Lee, a few weeks ago at our September video shoot. The topic? Fall fashion, of course. Specifically: what five pieces we need to add to our closet this season. Click play and start taking notes: you don’t want to start your fall shopping without this list.

Don’t miss out on more from our interview with Kin, plus her tips in our Fall 2012 Look Book
