bindal

I’ve been obsessively exploring Pinterest lately, looking for pictures of national costumes from around the world. I catalogue the hundreds of pictures I save by region, so that clothes with the same general aesthetic will all be categorized together.

But I’ve been running into some problems. For instance, here’s a costume from Serbia:

Serbia’s in the Balkans with Greece and Albania, so I put costumes from those places into a “Balkans” folder. Then there’s this very similar costume:

Balkans, right? Well, actually, it’s from Sardinia, which is a large island off the east coast of Italy. The outfit looks Greek to me, so even though Sardinia is nowhere near the Balkans, I put these Sardinian costumes in the Balkans folder. And then there’s this one:

Sardinian, right? Nope! Portugal. PORTUGAL. The Iberian peninsula, nowhere NEAR the Balkans!

Just to make it more confusing: An Albanian coat (Balkans)…

…and a late Ottoman bindalli entari from Turkey.

Well, Turkey is sometimes included in the Balkans, so that all makes sense. The bindalli entari goes in the Balkans folder. And this is Armenian, which is in the Caucasus…

But then THIS

is Palestinian, DISTINCTLY in the middle east. Not to mention that the Caucasus also include Georgia…

…and the Circassians…

Which have distinct similarities to Russian/Ukrainian Cossacks…

Oh, and this is an Avar woman from Russia…

Who looks more Berber to me, and the Berbers live in northern Africa…

Not to mention that the Russian clothes look like the Ukrainian clothes, which look like the Norwegian and Icelandic clothes…

I MAY BE GOING MAD.
