After an appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher in which host Bill Maher mostly used kid gloves to handle him, Milo Yiannopoulos got a very different treatment on the aftershow Overtime With Bill Maher.
During his appearance on Overtime, Yiannopoulos and Maher began having a deeply transphobic conversation about transgender people, which Larry Wilmore had to shut down. Read more. (2/18/17, 12:14 PM)
1. Transgender people are not ‘confused’ about their ‘sexual identity’
Being transgender has nothing to do with sexual identity ― it has to do with gender identity. Sexual identity is who you are sexually attracted to: men, women, both, neither, some combination of all of the above. Gender identity is how you identify: male, female, neither, both, some combination of all of the above.
2. Transgender people do not suffer from a psychiatric disorder
While many transgender people are afflicted by gender dysphoria ― feeling emotional distress over the difference between the gender they are thought to be at birth and the gender they know themselves to be ― they are not mentally ill.
3. Transgender people are not “disproportionately involved” in sex crimes
At least not in the way Yiannopoulos claims. In fact, in the past 35 years, only one case of an alleged trans person attacking someone in a restroom has been reported anywhere in the entire world.
4. Transgender people are the ones harassed and discriminated against in restrooms
The Williams Institute found that 70 percent of trans people have been “denied access, verbally harassed, or physically assaulted in public restrooms.”
5. Transgender people face shockingly high levels of sexual abuse and assault
One in two transgender people are sexually assaulted or abused at some point in their lives. What’s more, 2016 was the deadliest year on record for transgender people with at least 24 trans people, most of them transgender people of color, murdered and many more deaths not reported.
6. Trans people using restrooms corresponding with their gender identity doesn’t allow predators to gain access to those venues
As Massachusetts State Rep. Paul Heroux explained in a blog on The Huffington Post, “If a predator or pervert tries to gain access to an opposite sex bathroom or locker room, that is already against the law. Furthermore, over 90% of assaults on children are done by someone the child knows. Only with extreme rareness is it someone who is using a restroom, and that is and will continue to be against the law.”
7. Transgender people just want to use a bathroom and leave ― just like everyone else.
So, in summary: No, Milo ― just no. No to your campaign of willfully misinforming anyone who will listen to the sewage that so joyfully spills out of your mouth. No to your despicable and dangerous lies about transgender people. No to everything you said Friday night on Maher’s show. Actually, no to everything you’ve said anywhere at any point. No. No. No.
I know I just wrote this to you in another post, but I think it deserves it’s own space. Don’t you?
You think you are important. You think that your insight, as a gay conservative, makes you special. You think it makes you unique. I’ll give you credit, as a conservative homosexual you are unique.
However, this does not make you special, important, or even remotely informed.
What you say does not heighten the global dialogue. You are at best, a novelty and a distraction. Your opponents do not think highly of you, if they do at all. Consider the people who support: the demagogues, the alt-right, the fascist wannabes who thrive on prejudice- are these really your people?
The alt-right and the people at Breitbart have taken you into their fold not only because you share their views but because you give them a shred of credit. You diversify them. “A gay man speaks our thoughts,” they say, “how bad can we be?”
Milo, have you ever heard of Ernst Rohm?
Course you haven’t, judging by that interview you know nothing of your history, or reality for that matter. I’ll condense it for you. Rohm was a Nazi and a close friend of Hitler. He led the Storm Battalion, and became a high ranking official after his friend won the election. Hitler called him personally and said, “ I need you.”
Hang on. this story doesn’t end the way you think it does. They didn’t have a cute Reichstag wedding (but feel free to use that idea for your own).
Hitler liked Rohm and turned a blind eye to the fact that he slept with men. The rest of Hitler’s cabinet, however, did not.Not only was he gay, but he was gaining a lot of power. That couldn’t pass.
In what is now called The Night of Long Knives, Hitler gathered Rohm and his associates while they were on vacation and arrested them. An SS officer came to Rohm’s cell and offered Rohm a gun, giving him ten minutes to commit suicide. Rohm refused, demanding Hitler do it (knowing accurately the Furher was too much of a coward to do it himself).
Ten minutes passed. He was then shot by an officer and died in his cell.
How was he honored in death? The footage of him in rallies, any evidence of his being was erased by the Nazis posthumously.
Milo, be careful of the company you keep. Discern between those who would allow you to continue to live in comfort and ignorance as you do, and those who would throw you in the camps with the rest of the people you turned your back on wearing pink triangles, laboring until death.
I’ll give you a hint: It’s not the progressives. Worst we’ll do is kick you off Twitter.
