the feeling of closing the garage door after packing up
A photography exhibition entitled “Hip-Hop Revolution: Photographs by Janette Beckman, Joe Conzo and Martha Cooper” will escort viewers back in time via a nostalgia-inducing series of photographs capturing the zeitgeist of one of culture’s most decisive moments.
And while the music was undoubtedly the standout aspect of this cultural moment, the style wasn’t bad either. Bucket hats, boom boxes, gold chains, flat tops – the spirit of hip-hop wasn’t just pulsing through speaker systems, it was all over the streets.
I was listening to the Payday 2 soundtrack today and thinking that it’s kind of weird that the theme song (Criminal’s Ambition) draws on imagery that’s so at odds with the aesthetic of the actual crew. It’s a rap song, references basketball, “if we succeed we can even take care of our kids”, etc–it’s not generically criminal, it’s clearly very gangster in a way that doesn’t line up with the ¾ middle aged white guy in business suits crew (the album cover with Dallas and the big Flava Flav medallion is kinda embarrassing). Even Chains’s origin doesn’t jive with it.
I wonder a little if the Swedish devs went for that vibe because they had a particular view of crime in America…
