© IWM (Q 8605) Battle of St. Quentin. 6-inch 26cwt howitzers of the 244th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery in action at Biefvillers, 23 March 1918. Biefvillers is north-west of Bapaume in the old Somme battlefields. This piece is a prime example of the way British artillery updated itself as the war progressed. Less useful are those great big 60 pounders, they found that these howitzers could more effectively move infantry forward.
