between light and dark

The game tells the story of the battle between the forces of the “Light” and those of the “Dark” for control of an unnamed mythical land. The Dark are led by Balor and a group of lieutenants (the titular Fallen Lords), whilst the Light are led by “The Nine”; powerful sorcerers known as “Avatara,” chief amongst whom is Alric. The game begins in the seventeenth year of the war in the West, some fifty years since the rise of Balor, with the forces of Light on the brink of defeat; almost the entire land is under the dominion of the Dark, with only one major city and a few smaller towns remaining under the control of the Light. The plot follows the activities of “The Legion”, an elite unit in the army of the Light, as they attempt to turn back the tide and defeat Balor.

“I used to want to save the world. To end war and bring peace to mankind. But then, I glimpsed the darkness that lives within their light. I learned that inside every one of them, there will always be both. The choice each must make for themselves - something no hero will ever defeat. I’ve touched the darkness that lives in between the light. Seen the worst of this world, and the best. Seen the terrible things men do to each other in the name of hatred, and the lengths they’ll go to for love. Now I know. Only love can save this world. So I stay. I fight, and I give… for the world I know can be. This is my mission, now. For ever.”

Mexico revives 3,000-year-old ancient ball game - BBC News
A championship is being played in Mexico to try to revive a 3,000-year-old ball game.

VIDEO AT WEBSITE

The finals of a revived 3,000-year-old ball game have been played in the Mexican city of Teotihuacan

Organisers have been trying to bring back the game, known as Ullamaliztli in Mexico, because of its ancient cultural and religious significance.

The game was played across Central America before being banned by the Spanish conquistadors.

The tournament, only the second since 2006, is being played by ten teams from across Mexico.

According to ancient texts the ball game was seen as a struggle between light and darkness and provided the energy to keep humanity going.

One of the best preserved ball courts can be found - with stone rings to throw the ball through - in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula

Today the game is played by teams of seven players, who knock a heavy solid rubber ball up and down a narrow pitch, using their hips rather than their feet.

Giant ball courts can still be seen in ruins across the region.

In ancient times losers of the game were often sacrificed to the Gods*, but this year organisers opted for a knockout tournament instead.

* There is iconography and mythology related to the ballgame that involve sacrifice, but there is little evidence that people were sacrificed for having played this game.

A Wicked Web: Some Widowmaker Stuff

Widowmaker has something called Cyanosis, which is a condition that makes the skin turn blue due to lack of oxygen. During her reconditioning, Talon changed her body’s internal structure in order to make it consume less oxygen and to numb her to the cold, creating a perfect sniper.

Widowmaker’s base skins are named after French words for various colors:

Nuit- Night \ Ciel- Sky \ Rose- Pink \ Vert- Green

Her preorder-only skin, Noire, is heavily based on the blackwidow spider. The name means “Black”, with the extra ‘e’ on the end denoting a feminine adjective.

Her “Patina” skin is based on a layer of rust-like residue that forms on metal surfaces exposed to the elements. Patina can be green, gold, or silver. The most famous case of Patina is that the Statue of Liberty is only green because of the layer of Patina covering it’s copper surface. This is relevant because the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France in 1885, drawing cultural significant between Widowmaker and Patina.

Widowmaker’s “Tricolore” skin, released for the Summer Games, bears the colors of the French flag (commonly known as a “Tricolore” or “Tricolor Flag”). Flags that contain three colored bands are sometimes referred to as “Tricolor”.

Widowmaker’s “Odette” and “Odile” skins are based on the swans from Swan Lake, Odette being the white swan and Odile being the black swan. Traditionally, the same ballerina plays both Odette and Odile for the production, with parallels between the two often being compared to a “light” and “dark” personality thematic.

Widowmaker’s “Comtesse” skin (A recolor of her “Huntress” skin) means “countess” in English. Typically, a countess is a woman who holds power and land through her own right, partaking in hunts, sports, and other activities typically seen as ‘masculine’. However, since a Comtesse owns her own property and therefore has autonomy, no one can tell her what she can or can’t do.

Widowmaker’s catchphrase, “One Shot. One Kill.” is taken from something known as “The Sniper’s Creed”, meaning you only have one chance to kill your target before your location is revealed. A popular book called “One Shot” was written based on this high-octane creed.

Her other voice line, “Cherchez la Femme” (lit. “Look for the Woman”) is a French saying that implies a woman is always the cause of a mystery or murder. The phrase itself comes from a novel called “The Mohicans of Paris”, in which the main character keeps telling his colleagues to “find the woman”.

Widowmaker’s tattoo on her arm reads “Araignée du soir, Cauchemar” which means “Evening spider, nightmare.” This is based on a French superstition: “Araignée du matin, chagrin, Araignée du soir, espoir”, which means “Morning spider, grief. Evening spider, hope.” This means that if you see a spider in the morning, it’s all downhill from there. But a spider in the evening means good luck for the next day. Widowmaker’s tattoo just means she’s about to kill you.

JK Rowling did something incredible with Harry Potter: she presented grey characters to a young audience. The series has an obvious good x bad dynamic, but some very important people are grey: James, Sirius, Dumbledore, Snape. You can get angry and call me names all you want, but it’s a fact that the four of them did very good and very bad things in canon. Some did more bad, others did more good, but they’re neither angels, nor devils, all of them. And there’s a great lesson in this that, based on some confessions, many clearly don’t understand yet. That life is complex. Everyone is multidimensional. In real life, everyone is grey. The people you love, your favorite people they can also do wrong, commit crimes, they most likely already did hurt someone real badly some day. And this should help you learn not to completely vilify people, because you don’t know what they’re going through and how they got where they are, and because in most cases redemption is possible. Learning and changing is possible. I’m not saying that hurting people shouldn’t be frowned upon, it should, it has to be judged and fought against. But UNDERSTANDING the context, the people involved is so important. This is why we don’t simply kill off everyone that makes a mistake. Yes, we all have light and dark inside us. Going between them is a matter of choice, but note this: some get that choice easily delivered to them, while others struggle. Learn to understand the struggles. We don’t get the same conditions in life.

Azriel + Elain. I ship it. Hear me out (ACOWAR spoilers).

I have a theory that Azriel and Elain are ultimately going to end up together. I hated myself for it at first because I was kind of pulling for Lucien (poor Lucien), but now that I’ve put together the below evidence, I am 100% on board.

We all know that SJM is the queen of foreshadowing. She plants hints books in advance, and we don’t realize it was foreshadowing until after the truth has been revealed and you’re like duh this was SO OBVIOUS BECAUSE SHE BASICALLY TOLD US WITHOUT TELLING US (a few examples: Feyre being Rhys’ mate, Rowan being Aelin’s).

So, Azriel and Elain. Yes, I know Elain has a mate. Yes, I know that at the end of ACOWAR, all signs were pointing towards Elain giving him a chance. But I think that’s all it’s going to be. A chance.

Now let’s dig into the evidence. After finishing ACOWAR, I (obviously) had to re-read the whole series, now that I knew how it all turned out.

In ACOMAF, I came across the following passage on p. 487:

Nesta. I painted flames for her. She was always angry, always burning. I think that she and Amren would be fast friends. I think she would like Velaris, despite herself. And I think Elain - Elain would like it, too. Though she’d probably cling to Azriel, just to have some peace and quiet. I smiled at the thought - at how handsome they would be together. If the warrior ever stopped quietly loving Mor.

After having read ACOWAR, we know that Nesta and Amren became fast friends. We know that despite herself, she definitely likes Velaris. And we know that Elain clings to Azriel - that he was gentle with her, and kind. All of that passage came true. What struck me weirdly about it was that next sentence - I smiled at the thought - at how handsome they would be together. If the warrior ever stopped quietly loving Mor. Knowing what we know now about Mor, I think it’s safe to assume that in the near future, Mor will tell Azriel the truth. And when that happens…he’ll (hopefully) eventually open up his heart to someone else.

Once those sentences had grabbed my attention, when I was re-reading ACOWAR, all of the Azriel/Elain scenes just…made sense. He’s kind to her. Gentle. He sits with her when she’s in the garden. He walks with her arm wrapped around his. He carries her when she’s too weak to walk herself. There’s a fair amount of evidence that I could pull together, but to spare you from this post being absurdly long, I’m just asking you to trust me on the little moments.

Two more scenes that I do want to dissect, however. The first one being when Rhys explains how you can reject a mating bond - it’s a long passage, so I’m only going to include the highlights (p.257):

“You said your mother and father were wrong for each other; Tamlin said his own parents were wrong for each other….so it can’t be a perfect system of matching. What if -” I jerked my chin toward the window, to my sister and the shadowsinger in the garden - “that is what she needs? Is there no free will? What if Lucien wishes the union but she doesn’t?”

….

“Sometimes, the bond is nothing more than some…preordained guesswork at who will provide the strongest offspring. At its basest level, it’s perhaps only that….Only years later will they realize that perhaps the pairing was not ideal in spirit.”

Rhys goes on to explain how you can reject the bond but it can drive the male mad. At this point, my brain was screaming !!!!!!!!! at me. 1) because SJM is the queen of foreshadowing and if she included this discussion, she included it for a reason and 2) Feyre literally is like ummmm hi, I think Azriel could be a better match.

Finally, the last piece of evidence I will include, is the scene where Azriel hands Elain truth-teller. This scene is so important, so pivotal, that is even included in the A Court of Thorns and Roses coloring book. If you own the coloring book, you know that the scenes in there have huge significance to the story. Again this scene is a bit long to include, but highlights below, after he gently presses her hand into the hilt of the legendary blade (p.610):

“Cassian gawked at Azriel, and I wondered how often Azriel had lent out that blade -

Never, Rhys said from where he finished buckling on his own weapons against the side of the wagon. I have never once seen Azriel let another person touch that knife

Elain looked up at Azriel, their eyes meeting, his hand still lingering on the hilt of the blade. I saw the painting in the mind: the lovely fawn, blooming spring vibrant behind her. Standing before Death, shadows and terrors lurking over his shoulder. Light and dark, the space between their bodies a blend of the two. The only bridge of connection…that knife.”

I don’t think there’s much to say other than OH MY GOD THAT PASSAGE I SHIP IT.

IN CONCLUSION (I’m sorry this post was so long but I needed to include evidence to back up this kind of crazy theory), I think that Elain and/or Lucien will end up rejecting the bond. If I had to make a really crazy guess, I’m going to predict that Lucien ends up being Helion’s heir (and therefore moving to his court), and because he is decent, he realizes that Elain will want to stay with her sister’s in the Night Court. Because he recognizes that maybe they aren’t a true match in spirit, he will let her go. And then boom, that leaves the door open for Azriel + Elain. The end.

Let me know your thoughts!!
