honestly my biggest pet peeve in fic AND in canon is everyone forgetting that kara is more than just a musclehead with the emotional range of a puppy and is actually a refugee, with her entire culture and language and religion wiped out, everyone she’s ever met dead, not simply a human with powers but a Kryptonian, always.

Who comes from a family of universe-renowned scientists, and was considered a genius by the standards of the extremely technologically advanced society that aren’t simply american humans in a few thousand years but people who probably have very different brains–along with also being created via the Codex and genetic manipulation (so it’s probably phased out any junk DNA, or vestigial structures–so, Kara probably doesn’t actually have an appendix or wisdom teeth tbh). If Kara had actually lived her life on Krypton, there’s a very high chance she would have went into the Science guild tbh

Really, imagine if you had gone through the equivalent of a rigorous phD program, and then all of a sudden put in a kindergarten science class. In the comics Kara was about to become the youngest person on the Kryptonian science counsel, ever

Yeah, of course Kara’s going to be bored with Earth level science, those science fairs that Alex dragged her along to are, to her, probably rudimentary at best, wildly off the mark at worst (and really–she’s been told to keep hidden. Genius children make news, genius children are noticed. Alex probably had a bit more leeway as the daughter of two world renowned scientists, already noticed by her teachers to be gifted but kara’s already the new adopted kid with the funny accent and mannerisms in a small town. That would be the exact opposite of laying low).

Lena’s probably a better tactician than Kara–a life as a Luthor would be a constant practice in tactics, long term planning. She’s definitely a brilliant scientist, but out of the two of them? Kara’s probably better.

And honestly? Lena realizing just how brilliant Kara really is, a fully fleshed three dimensional character, would be such a better story than just pretending that kara is an idiot with maybe 3 emotions.

Part of what makes Kara such a compelling character is that she’s been through so much, has so much anger and rage and sorrow but still manages to be a light and inspiration for others, intelligent, someone with a gift with words, a genius–someone who thinks of herself–Kara Zor-El, the powerless Kryptonian–as ordinary, someone not yet worthwhile, but she wants to be. She defeated Myriad through her words, through her sincerity and optimism, simply as herself. As Astra said, Kara “has the heart of a hero,” regardless of powers.Her heart is what makes her a hero.

tl;dr: kara is more than just a “puppy” who is incapable of intelligent thought

Let’s talk about Killian Jones...

So, my first reaction to the end of 6x12 was totally, “Was that really necessary?” (Okay, actually it was “The fuck”, but that’s what was implied.) And then Writer Margaret took over and she thought back to some of her favorite redemption arcs and it actually made sense.

Disclaimer: You are well within your rights to disagree with me and I still love you if you do. You are also welcome to skip this if you like, if this frustrates you or makes you angry, ignore it. It’s only my opinion and I won’t be offended if you choose not to be upset further. No judgment. We all bring different life experiences to an episode, so we are all affected differently.

(I’m also not interested in comparing Killian’s arc to Regina, because as much as I love her, I think the writers sometimes forget that she’s still in the middle of hers. He’s gotten a much better, fully fleshed out redemption arc and that’s my final word on that subject.)

To me, as the audience, Killian has been through enough. He’s changed, he’s repented, but the thing is…it’s very clear that he’s not at peace with his past. 

And part of that is because he hasn’t truly made amends. (Bear with me a moment, I know you’re thinking about Belle.)

Think of the best redemption arcs you’ve ever seen. If you’re an ATLA fan, you might think of Zuko. If you’re an FMA fan, you might think of Scar. They both have one thing in common: at some point they face the victims of their crime. Every good redemption arc has that moment. The moment when a murderer stares down a gun held by the girl whose parents he killed and accepts the consequences of his actions.

Since so many of his crimes are centuries old, Killian has never has never been confronted by someone hurt irrevocably by his actions. And yes, he shot Belle, but Rumple wiped that injury away with a wave of his hand–in the end it altered her life very little. In the end, there was very little for her to forgive.

But David… David has a wound that hasn’t fully healed. David has lived under this shadow his whole life. He lost someone he loved. He spent years thinking his father had betrayed him. He and his mother scraped by every year to make up for his father’s loss.

Killian is going to have to confront that.

Now, I know someone out there is going, “What about Liam 2.0?″ And it’s true, Liam fulfills all the same criteria as David. But his story–and by all accounts we’re not fully finished with that story, so it might still tie in–fulfills a different purpose. Liam’s story was about breaking a cycle. 

David, though… When that moment comes, David will represent Killian’s dark, sordid past in it’s entirety.

And David is going to forgive him. It may take him an episode or two, but David is going to look him in the eye and tell him that he isn’t that man anymore. And when David forgives him, it will symbolize every horrible thing Killian has ever done being put truly and finally in the past.

Killian will finally have peace.

Killian will be able to move on.

(And he won’t have to die a fourth fucking time to do it.)

Which means when he finally (finally!) asks Emma to marry him, it will be with his past truly behind him. He’ll be going into his future with his redemption arc fully complete.

The Signs as Magi

Aries: Explosive, always in motion. Magic rooted in their physical forms, powerful sweeping gestures blood pumping movements, and raw pulsing fury. Will more than likely just try and beat you up. Some of their most effective work is completely accidental and unrepeatable, often followed by an ‘I meant to do that.’ Very very prone to their own creations violently blowing up in their faces, they’ve gotten very good at dealing with explosions.

Cancer: Often underestimates their own successes, a jack-of-all-trades of spellcasting. Unsure exactly which phase of the moon to perform that exorcism? Ask a Cancer. Almost organic libraries full of every topic imaginable. Very creative, and frankly amazing problem solvers. For your own sake never EVER corner them.

Leo: Very flashy, and pretty. If you’re looking for masters of illusion and spectacle, look no further. Simply the BEST when it comes to the decor of their havens. Second only to Scorpios in their mastery of deception. Underestimate their deadliness at your peril though, their silver tongues are often forked. ALWAYS bring a blessed mirror when dealing with one.

Virgo: Very, and I mean VERY thorough. Usually has a spectacularly well tended garden of every kind of herb, weed, flower, and elemental flora imaginable. Very potent even if not immediately apparent. Incredibly practised and incredibly precise. Defensively impregnable. And for the love of all the gods and devils in all of the worlds do NOT fight them on their ground.

Libra: Diplomatic to a fault and brilliantly talented truthseers, wordsmiths, and hieromancers. Can and will talk their way out of almost any fight. Experts of defensive magic. A dazzling array of binding spells, seals, and law-sorcery. Give up after the first 3 layers of bureaumancy.

Scorpio: Unrivaled secret keepers and masters of malevolent subtlety. Layers upon webs upon stratagems of contracts, debts, and influences. Masters of puppetry and poison. Never ask a favour from them, just don’t. An incredible ally or fatal enemy. Best faced head on, and vulnerable to unexpectedness. Few things surprise them though.

Sagittarius: At the forefront of experimentation and research. Mind mages, intellectuals, and philosomancers. Absolute experts in finding loopholes and capable of extreme acts of brutality in the name of progress. Knowledgeable about their chosen fields, and often apprehensive about sharing their considerable expertise.

Capricorn: Very good combat mages and healers, very straightforward and efficient sorcery, not one for unnecessary flair or flamboyance. simplicity does not equate a lack of power, however. VERY aware of their own relative strength and chooses battles accordingly. Incredible calculating precision.

Aquarius: Some of the best necromancers, there are none better in manipulation of the flesh. Prone to hordes of minions, but dont worry, they grew the flesh, no animals were harmed in the construction of this shambling horror/sacrifice. Voted #1 most likely to lose soul in demonic contract in high school. Often misunderstood. Often benevolent. 

Pisces: The vaguest, and most terrifying mages. No one quite understands what they do or how they work. Masters of the most esoteric subjects, Time, Death, the Soul. Demonic, angelic, and fae ambassadors. Often very distant, rarely concern themselves with the concerns of this world. They never quite make eye contact with you. Prone to disappearing for long periods of time. Do not anger them.

what is it exactly that all the lawyers at airports are doing? i understand that theyre there for refugees/immigrants/those affected by trumps ban, but how can they help them in that moment at the airport?

Great question! 

What happens is that information has to get to the attorneys on the first level. We do that multiple ways: we have attorneys (like me) and translators who roam the international gates, asking if people have been waiting for 1.5-2+ hours for their family or friends. If they say yes, we know that that’s kind of at the sweet spot for someone who may be stuck in secondary inspections, or detained, and do our intake. Another way attorneys get the information is that their numbers have been circulated enough that people who are traveling or have family traveling call ahead and let the attorneys know when someone’s flight gets in, and other pertinent information. Also, we coordinate with other groups that are involved, such as CAIR and other immigrants’ rights groups, who get us info from people who have contacted them about either traveling or having family/friends travel into that airport, at what time, why they might be at risk, and so on. 

All of this information gets catalogued into a database (we’ve been using GoogleDocs because in the beginning, especially, it was such a loose operation of volunteers that we needed any system in place ASAP.

What happens then is that the attorneys work in different groups. On teh first level, you have to triage it. Some cases get priority: obviously, five children from Jordan on visitors’ visas who have been held for 6+ hours get priority over a single male from, say, Mexico, who has been held for 2 hours. These are judgment calls by the attorneys. It sucks, but not everyone can be first.

Other attorneys reach out to Customs and Border Patrol about certain people being held in secondary inspection or detainment. They get whatever information they can out of them, and keep the pressure on them to let them know attorneys are nearby and watching. 

A lot of it is fact-finding; pregnant women, for example, coming in on a visa may first be required by CBP to get checked out by a doctor. Attorneys have sources in place with nearby clinics and the like to be able to know when people are being taken there, and that way they can advise worried family members and sometimes even speak to the people directly. 

Some peopel are being detained. At a certain point, a right to counsel is triggered. For green card holders, for example, they have a right to due process. Someone traveling on a visa, not so much; they’re treated different as far as what their rights are and what attorneys can do for them. For green card holders, LPRs, US citizens, etc, attorneys get back there and give them advice: for example, don’t sign that I-407, dont’ sign that waiver, etc, etc. (An immigration attorney knows this part of it best; I am not an immigration attorneys so i cannot give advice about this.)

Part of it involves negotiations with CBP and other agencies, to get the person out. A big big part of it, though, is honestly just keeping the pressure up. It’s important, very important, that attorneys are staffed at national airports from 6am to midnight (which is the OHare schedule). Constant attorney presence, or near constant, tends to help law enforcement behave better. Not that they behave perfectly and follow the law 110% adn stop being jerks and racists, but they fear, rightfully so, they won’t be as easily able to get away with it. 

Other attorneys, when they know someone is being detained, write motions (injunctions, declaratory jdugments) or petitions for habeas corpus, which are meant to get a person who is being detained subject to immigration laws out of custody ASAP. These get taken directly to federal judges who then have to make a decision. In Boston it was reported that tonsof attorneys, mostly female, and many dressed in their Saturday night out on the town outfits, entered a federal court house at 10pm with motions and petitions for the duty judges. 

Attorneys also help coordinate the media push, which is very important because reporters on the ground are able to share stories quickly adn update as they go. Shaping the narrative is a huge part of any large scale national fight, and attorneys can be very skilled in that manner. For me, personally, I was trained that way by my boss. I know how to deal with the press, even though I hate it. Think themes, speak in soundbytes, answer hte question YOU want to be asked, not the question you were actually asked. Things like that. 

I have the pleasure of being friends with teh woman heading the operation at Dulles. Fantastic immigration and criminal defense attorney, and an Afghani Muslim woman. CBP at Dulles were the worst in the nation - they ignored the court order my friend was able to obtain (with the work of the attorneys that worked under her) that staed that they had to let attorneys back there to see the people being detained. 

She did get a brief chance to speak to people, though, eventually, and if there’s anything we attorneys are good at, it’s synopsizing complicated advice and rights and options into succinct orders people can follow. “If they try to drag you onto the plane out of this country,” I know she said to those being detained at Dulles, “you sit your ass down on the floor.” 

This is kind of a broad overview; I’m sure an  actual immigration attorney can flesh out the legal advice part better. I was not there as an immigration attorney; I was there as an attorney to insist. Working for a solo practitioner has taught me vertical representation, and how to do intakes adn gather all necessary info from a stressed and upset person. You’d be surprised, but a lot of attorneys that work for really big powerful law firms don’t know how to do this. At their firms, they know one small part of a case really really really well, but may not know much else. They may not even deal with clients directly. I did notice at ORD, for example, that most attorneys sat there and worked on their stuff, but no one was out gathering information. I think they thought people knew to come over to the McDonalds area? So me and my friend just walked back and forth for hours, doing intakes and getting that information over, which got that part of the process cemented so others coudl replace us as the shifts turned over. 

Attorneys fight this ban in many ways, on many fronts, and the ones at the airports are all volunteers. Immigration isn’t in my bag of tricks beyond the basics, but I can take directions, and I’m happy to work under attorneys who knwo more than I do (because when the tables are turned, other attorneys work under me and do what I tell them to do). We have certain skills, and the ones that are at the airports, we feel called to use them in a way that helps people instead of hurts them. (There are more than enough lawyers who hurt people, including the disgraces to the Bar that are part of this administration.) Hope that helps!

Hansol liked to skateboard to work every morning. He took the same route each day, starting from the smooth tile outside his apartment and ending at the glass doors belonging to the town’s diner. He never had an answer as to why his skateboard came with him everywhere. Pictures taken from last year’s Halloween party presented Hansol lousily wrapped in toilet paper, his costume being the ever so original mummy that at least six other people at the party had certainly not been wearing. Hansol liked to claim his costume came out different. He was a skateboarding mummy.

On his best friend’s birthday he had one arm resting thoughtfully around his shoulders, tiny splotches of buttercream frosting across their noses and hardly sticking to their foreheads. Hansol’s skateboard must have also been treated as an equal member to the night for along the black surface were more frosting smears, the board held tightly in Hansol’s other hand. Even when his younger sister fell from the monkey bars and sprained her wrist, pictures taken of her recovery in the hospital room had snippets of Hansol smiling, skateboard sitting in his lap.

Seeing Hansol without his skateboard was like seeing butterflies without wings. A peculiar sight indeed if someone ever managed to glean across it. In fact, something Hansol liked to glean across more than his skateboard, was you.

Killian quietly wrapped his arms around his fiancé as she flipped another pancake onto an already towering stack. He nuzzled her ear, his trimmed facial hair tickling her exposed appendage. “Something smells delicious,”  he whispered.

Emma smiled from ear to ear, the heat from Killian’s body radiating from behind her. “It’s just from a box…”

He practically growled as he responded, “I wasn’t talking about the pancakes..”

Emma turned swiftly in his arms, taking no time to lock his lips with her own. He must have recently brush his teeth, because she could still taste spearmint along his tongue. Her hand travelled from his scruffy chin, to his slightly exposed chest (he was in the middle of dressing himself and didn’t finish before walking down to the kitchen). After exploring each other’s mouth for what seemed like an eternity, she broke the contact, looking into his cobalt blue eyes.

She must have been staring far too long, because Killian broke her concentration, asking, “What?”

“I’m just…happy. Still surprises me sometimes.”

He just smiled. “Aye, love. Me, too.” Killian then leaned down for another kiss, this one more gentle than the previous one. As he lifted his lips from hers, he ask, “So, should I look forward to this every morning? My loving wife, dressed in naught but her black silk robe, making me breakfast?”

He doesn’t know what to make of you. You’d think after months of knowing you, he’d be a little more sure of himself. He is, really. It’s just around you that his heart races and his palms sweat. You make him feel alive, and more than that, you make him feel human.

It’s still dark outside when he wakes in a cold sweat, his hands shaky and blood pounding in his ears. All he can think of is the calm that you bring to him, and the safe warmth of your arms.

Some weapon design sketches as part of my Throw Me A Weapon! commission series. The first one is just a zenn weapon from a doodle dump I cleaned up. I have dozens of zenn weapons sketched out so far. Pretty excited to try and get up to date official references for things out soonish.

The second image is a weapon for a good buddy of mine whose character Cyros can use. Cyros is a nature deity who can summon a suit of burning bark-like armor grown outward from his own body. The canon is a potential extension of the suit. (I might revise it slightly to actually flesh out the hollowed end better. I had ideas for that and forced myself to stop because I’d gotten too lost in the wonderful details and kinda had a meditative tree drawing session before remembering I was going to burn and crack it afterwards. Good stuff. Had a lot of fun. I’m sure Aftertouch is going to mess around and elaborate or create some sort of derivatives. 

Go check out Aftertouch’s stuff, for real it’s really lovely. Very painty and heavily textured in a fine art sort of way. Very fun to look at. Really nice inky sketches and almost abstract way of painting environments. Lot of cool headworld material related to Cyros and other characters in that world. I really don’t have enough praise for this guy. He cool. Be nice to him. :)

That’s something fully intended for the Throw Me A Weapon commission series anyway. Its more or less a flat rate ‘allow me to pull something out of my magic design hat’. There’s no prompting involved, no suggestions, no input. You just give me a character and link me any information you want to offer me. There’s no guarantee that I’ll look at all of it. But I’ll take whatever strikes me as interesting and build something cool off of that.

You’re free to alter the design however you want afterwards or transplant it to a different character. My aim is to make sure the weapon (or tool) is as tied into and a reflection of (my gut interpretation) of that character. I’ll make a journal with official pricing and stuff tomorrow but the quality bar is going to be more or less like the first image with a flat rate somewhere between $15-$35 usd. 

As the next week or so go by I’ll feel it out and consider doing complexity tiers. I don’t want to make this complicated on myself but I also want to be available for people who feel like spending more for a more complex design like the second image which was kinda overkill. I don’t have any intention of making any designs hit that level of detail, I really wanted to do friend art and it ended up working out as a cool example for this series as far as my ability to work with other people’s source material.

Again, I’ll post more info in a later more official journal. This is just a teaser and because the images were so damn popular on DA. Forgot that I’ve basically just returned from a massive one year hiatus because of college. IM BACK MOFOKOS

As I definitely wanna get some red in there ;) but I’m probably gonna change the hue of it later on, right now it’s also probably reading weird just with the blue undersketch too anyways, and with the monotone!

maybe it’s only because it’s sunday night and i’m feeling slightly mushy, but i’m thinking about the sheer amount of creation that goes on in every fandom i have ever been part of, and just???

we have as fangirls created an entire dialect (anyone who’s spent any time on tumblr can speak it/recognize it, and it’s very distinctive and expressive and the way it compensates for being a text-based medium without inflections/facial expressions and the other things that usually go into a language are endlessly fascinating for me). we come up with off the cuff headcanons. we write vast volumes of insightful and sophisticated media critiques/meta pieces/theories and speculations (and sometimes put more thought and care into it than the actual writers, alas). we get so much meaning out of every look/line/scene. it’s astonishing. we liveblog, we flail, we cry, we enjoy (and bewail) the experience without holding back, and spend so much genuine energy on the Very Real Need for Those Idiots to Just Kiss, and i love it.

we spontaneously and easily create full-length stories that are often better than many published books, or just a snippet to support or flesh out a single piece of narrative/spoilers. we interact and encourage and inspire each other in constantly flexible and fun ways in doing it. we eagerly and happily consume these stories and create more from them in turn.

we spend hours on edits, or gifsets, or drawings or sketches or digital paintings, or other beautiful pieces of art, and the talent is just amazing. simply because we love something and want to make something pretty. after all, all this creation is happening for free, in ordinary people’s off-hours. nobody’s an expert, nobody’s getting paid for it. everyone can participate. yes, there’s the whole question of fandom culture and its problems/issues, but that’s beside the point in terms of what fandom itself is.

see, this is why i am suspicious of any author/creator who proclaims to hate and/or dislike/not encourage fanworks. yes, some of it is creepy and strange and that goes with the territory. but honestly i think that ignoring or discounting the sheer amount of passion with which people love stories, and want to be part of their creation in imaginative mediums, is a mistake.

and because of all this creation, we talk to each other. we become friends. i have people i met here who i text all day every day about my life, regular things, non-fandom stuff (although there is certainly lots of that as well). i count on those people to be there and to support me and to turn to when i need someone to talk to (and try in return to be the same for them).

the world is stupid, the world is dumb, the world is scary. we need more creation. we need more connection. we need more of whatever this energy is that drives us to question and explore and care and make shit and enjoy it together and to tell a new and better story as a result. we need to move it beyond tumblr, sure – but i also think it’s a hell of a start.

so yes. this isn’t anything that hasn’t been said before, obviously, but it struck me tonight for some reason, and i wanted to say something.

i love you guys. keep being awesome.

Yamaguchi doesn’t really like to read minds. He always feels as if he’s invading people’s privacy. But, sometimes, he simply has to do it. What happens, when he tunes into some random person’s mind on a crowded train, though?
