Acceptance Speech

Summary: (Modern!AU) In which Bucky uses his time on stage at the Oscars to let the world in on a secret he’s been keeping for more than two years.

Pairing: Bucky x Reader

Word Count: 2,217

A/N: Happiest of happy birthdays to my twin, @imaginingbucky . You are a queen and I adore you with every single ounce of my being. I know how much you love award shows, so I hope you enjoy this too.

Bucky feels like a nervous teenager as he sits in the backseat of a stretch limousine, waiting to arrive at his destination. His hands are clammy, his heart is beating too quickly and he can’t stop tapping his foot on the floor. After six years in the acting business, he shouldn’t feel this way. He’s attended more than his fair share of award shows to know all kinds of techniques to keep any concerns at bay. Yet here he is trying his hardest not to hyperventilate and hold his water bottle without spilling it all over his expensive suit. He’d never hear the end of it from his stylist if he did.

“Looking forward to the show tonight?” Vision asks, momentarily catching Bucky’s gaze in the rear view mirror.

Bucky pulls at the collar of his shirt before shifting slightly. Usually this backseat offers him the comfort he needs, no matter how he’s feeling. Today he might as well be sitting on rocks. “Yeah.”

“You don’t sound it,” Viz observes, as he makes a right turn down a side street. He’s an expert at getting you where you need to go while also avoiding all of the LA traffic. “Is it because you’re up for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’?”

Alison Bechdel – Born: 10 September, 1960:

Famous for her iconic comic-strip series “Dykes to Watch Out For” – Alison Bechdel is a prominent cartoonist, author and creator whose graphic works truly took the publishing scene by storm. First published in 1983, “Dykes to Watch Out For” utilised Bechdel’s individual style and wit, creating a syndicated series that debunked stereotypes of lesbian relationships and showed the complexities behind them, all through Bechdel’s alter ego, Mo.

DTWOF was a truly representative series, showcasing the lives of characters of all ethnicities, gender identities, religions and orientations. The world of her characters was truly diverse and through the twenty five years that the series ran, it showed the women’s development and journeys from getting promotions and their educational paths, relationships with people of different gender identities and the tackling of illnesses such as breast cancer and MS. Interwoven with these heart-warming lesbian stories, Bechdel immersed a socio-political commentary, discussing the battle for LGBT rights and the plight of those involved and how they were represented by a heteronormative media. She was unapologetic in bringing these issues to the forefront for wider society, and it made for a lot of controversy and debating over the characters. DTWOF was extremely multifaceted and personable, and its humour captured the hearts of queer youth within America and thus is truly cemented as a cult classic today.

Award-winning graphic memoir “Fun Home” was Bechdel’s novel that focused upon her relationship with her father and his passing. Ultimately, the story is described as “a masterpiece about two people who live in the same house but different worlds, and their mysterious debts to each other.” – It was hailed as a best book by multiple sources in 20016, and won awards including the Lambda award and an Eisner award. She was embraced by the LGBT community, and was given the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book. Ultimately, Alison Bechdel’s works are inspired by her journeys of sexuality and gender non-conformity, all told through a very unique artistic medium. The personal intricacy and presentation of them are what make them vital when discussing all facets of LGBT history.

“The secret subversive goal of my work is to show that women, not just lesbians, are regular human beings.”

anyway I don’t know where he is or what he is doing but I need Aidan Gillen to know that I wish him the best the world has to offer him, he’s done a great job, he’s a dedicated spectacular amazing actor, he doesn’t care about fame he does that because he loves it and he cares about his roles, I love him so much, he didn’t deserve to see his character so mistreated, he’s the best of the whole cast, I’ll watch whatever he’s gonna work in. Best person in the world.give him awards and flowers and whatever he wants he deserves the world.

Their Art

Warning: None.

Summary: The boys come home after the teen choice awards, and they try to put on a brave face, Grayson can’t take it.

You stared at the screen of the tv in their living room. You had been sitting in their apartment, watching the Teen Choice Awards, enjoying what you could of it, and as they prepared to announce Choice Youtuber you listened with intent, your hands clasped to your chest in a prayer as you squeezed your eyes shut, your heart hammering against your rib age, your stomach fluttering…

“Your choice YouTuber is…. Jake Paul!”

“Wait… what?”

You whispered, the words falling past your lips in a slow tumble, your heart dropping and your jaw following as you stared at the screen, watching a pompous jerk accept their award. Your brows furrowed in anger, and you watched the rest of the show with grit and a sliver of hope, only for it to contain numerous injustices toward your boys. you shut the off the tv at its end after seeing a large white paragraph of voter’s rights that were misplaced. The anger you felt was one of sadness, however, you knew, this was more than a little daunting for Ethan and Grayson.

You sat patiently waiting for them to come home. You took to social media, feeling a swell of pride as a fan, that there were those who supported the boys no matter what, showing their love and making their voice heard.

“Yeah, I know but it’s whatever…”

A familiar voice caught your attention and you immediately rose to your feet, setting your laptop onto the coffee table and greeting them with a large smile and open arms. It was hard to keep your composure, you could see their defeat, and you could see the sadness in their eyes. It replaced the beaming enigmatic looks they had left the apartment with. You felt dejected.

“Congratulations on your win, you guys. I’m so proud of you both!”

You offered, hugging Ethan.

“Thank you.”

He gave his thanks. You turned to Grayson who gave you a quick hug, placing a chaste kiss to your lips and ducked his head, already making his way to his room.

“Thanks, I’m gonna go to bed.”

He muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. You nodded, and watched him leave, his shoulders hunched and his head down. You turned to Ethan, who sat on the couch, looking as if he were in deep thought. You frowned, the sight of such bright lights in many lives were looking so dim, all because a group of producers thought it was okay to hurt them, to take away something they worked for.

You follow Grayson, turning toward his room, and as you give a couple light raps to the door, you push it open and look for him, your eyes catching his figure in the barely illuminated room. He’s hunched over, his shoulders shaking just slightly as he tries to muffle his own quiet tears.

“Grayson? Baby?”

You whisper into the darkness. He doesn’t turn to you right away and as you round the corner to see him, his eyes are wet and his cheeks are red. He sees you and the tears fall faster. You look at him in question, immediately going to his side, wrapping your arms around his large frame holding him close as he cries harder, and harder, until he’s shaking and you’re holding him as tight, and still as possible, trying yourself not to submit to your own disposition.

“I’m so sorry…”

He whispers through nearly silent sobs. You pull away just the smallest space to look him in the eye, wiping his tears and holding his face in your hands. You look at him, giving him a reassuring nod, gently leaning your forehead to his as you close your eyes.

“For what? Grayson, babe, you’ve done nothing wrong.”

You whisper. Grayson shakes his head and he says nothing. You kiss his tear soaked lips, then his cheeks, and even as he’s crying, you kiss his eyes and his forehead. You hold him once more.

“Our fans deserved that win.”

He says through deep breaths, clenching his jaw and breathing through his nose, trying to ease his own anger and sadness. You only listen and as he stares at you with a sullen look, his lip quivering at his words.

“An award doesn’t need to be the staple of your fans. You have your fandom. You don’t need an award show, you guys have your fans, and you guys have me. Grayson, you have me. I hate to see you like this.”

You say sincerely and you wrap him in your arms once more, kissing the top of his head repeatedly as he lay in your arms, letting himself be vulnerable. He cries in your arms, where he feels most safe, and as you gently lull him to sleep, as you care for him and hold him, you tell him what matters the most.

“It’s in the heart.”

As Grayson falls asleep, you fix him in his bed, his eyes puffy, and his chest giving uneven breaths as he relinquishes himself to his own dreams. You get up from the bed, removing his shoes, kissing his head, and tucking him in, before venturing outside of the room. You go into the living room, and when you don’t see Ethan, you go to his room. Like Grayson, he’s fallen asleep on his bed, still fully dressed in their day’s outfit. You remove his shoes as well and put the comforter on his body.

“I’m sorry, you guys. You both deserve so much more…”

You sigh, crossing your arms over your chest as you gaze at Ethan, who has become like a brother to you, and has been a dear and kind friend. You shake your head, a smile making its way to your lips as you think about the boys who lay asleep and have brought so many smiles and given so many laughs. No award and no other person will ever be able to contradict their work. Their art is in the smiles of the people who support them, and the people who care for them. Their award is the happiness they bring to many, and with that, they’ve won the world.

I saw this from @wonderfuldolans based on a post about comforting the twins, lets be real, with all of the stuff that happened tonight, we all wish to give them what they deserve but they’ve got us, which i can say is worth more than an award. Love you all, this fandom is literally the best and i hope I did the storyline justice.

~Kai xx

And The Oscar Goes To by 42hrb (1/1 | 2,241 | PG13)

Being publicly in the closet means Stiles can’t go to the Academy Awards with who he really wants, but it’s not like he’s going to win so he doesn’t have to worry about slipping up and thanking Derek in his speech… right?

Awake by reillyblack (1/1 | 3,441 | R)

Stiles was too goddamn old for a sexual awakening.

And…Action! by defenselesswriter (5/? | 9,632 | NC17)

“Not looking for casual hookups. Sorry, bro. Most codependent independent person you will ever meet. Part-time actor, full-time asshole who coincidentally preaches positivity. Worst bowler in the world after my best friend. Looking for a guy whose first thought isn’t ‘Can I put my dick in one of his orifices?’ Also super hella bi and might be down for a threesome.”

The Payoff Pitch by Leslie_Knope (12/12 | 83,974 | NC17)

Derek is on the cusp of his second season with the LA Dodgers, and as the reigning runner-up Rookie of the Year, the pressure’s on him to become the team’s star pitcher and lead them to the playoffs for the first time in five years. He’s trying to deal with the burden of expectations and really has zero desire to spend any extra time or energy on anything that isn’t baseball.

But then he meets Stiles.

Deal? by fancyachatup (1/1 | 921 | G)

Only Peter is evil and it’s for like 1 sentence.
Basically Sheriff answers a domestic violence call and Stiles hits on Derek while simultaneously coming out.

Outed by smokesforsterek (1/1 | 2,419 | G)

Nancy O’Dell was standing on her chic set but in the background on one of the set pieces was a obviously zoomed in and blurry picture of Derek and Stiles kissing on the beach.

or the one where Derek and Stiles are famous and secretly dating, and are caught. So naturally the only thing to do is pretend they’re making a movie.

Niall Horan is a hopeless romantic. Yes, he believe in love at first sight, even though he gets teased relentlessly about it. He wants everyone to find there true love. He hasn’t found that person yet, but he knows that shes out there. But when he sees two of his closest friends alone, knowing full well that they are perfect for each other, he knows exactly what to do.

You weren’t, exactly, a hopeless romantic. You believed in love, you believed in marriage, you believed in the attraction to someone, but you didn’t think love at first sight existed, you didn’t believe that there was one specific person in the world for you; you believed that you could fall in love with multiple people in your lifetime. Niall, being your best friend, wasn’t having any of that. He knew who your other half was. Coincidentally, Harry felt the same way as you. He never believed in love at first sight. But Niall knew that you two would change your minds as soon as you guys got into that special moment.

whenever I think of reputation’s release so many things are going through my mind in a nanosecond like the number of days that we have left until its release, how I am going to plan my week according to the release date, how I know I am not going to study for a week because I’m going to be listening and analyzing every single bit of it, how I am not realizing the impact that it will have on my life, what my favorite track will be, how I don’t actually comprehend that we have an actual album that is being released by taylor alison swift, how we have an undeniably monumental upcoming tour that’s waiting for us, the fact that I know that I am going to cry a lot during this era, how there is a slight chance that taylor is lurking me, the fact that we will get candids, photos, gifs, poems and 13 more songs including music videos and multiple awards, and I feel all kinds of emotions but the dominant ones are excitement, happiness and anxiety, which in the whole tells us that this is going to be the best and most legendary era so far

He’s practically shaking, and even though he’s already done this once, he feels even more nervous than the first time.

tony review

soooooo here is what I thought about this year’s tonys

Side note : These are all my personal choices so yeah

1. The opening number wasn’t as smooth as the others but it was terrible

2. falsettos should’ve won the best revival of a musical, but I also feel Miss Saigon could’ve won too

3. I’m happy for Gavin Creel but Andrew Rannells should’ve WON HIS FIRST TONY GOSH DANG IT

4. my favorite performance was either Miss Saigon or Falsettos. Idk but great comet was a little too flashy and I don’t really understand of the plot of come from away (like I know its about 9/11 but what about the first female pilot and why is she in Canada?????)

5. Dear Evan Hansen should’ve performed You Will Be Found instead of Waving Through a Window

6. That Hello Dolly performance was weird

7. Like i know it’s because Bette Midler is a huge drama queen (ill go back to that later) but seriously???? it was so weird and it makes an amazing show look boring

8. I felt Bette Midler shouldn’t have won best leading actress??? I mean i know she’s talented but the other nominees like Eva Noblezada and Denee Benton should’ve  had a better change

9. IM TIRED OF PEOPLE SAYING GREAT COMET WAS ROBBED. Listen, both shows are amazing. DEH and Great Comet are both amazing shows and both deserved to win, but i think the reason DEH did so well was that more people relate to it. Sure, Great Comet inspires people to read War and Peace but DEH is complex and shares real-world issues that a lot of musical loving teens can relate to like suicide, depression, and social anxiety (something I have) so Idk i just relate to DEH better. I’m not saying one is better than the other but personally, I think DEH should’ve won best musical

10. tbh I was so annoyed at Bette Midler’s speech. I MEAN THEY PLAYED MUSIC AND THE TELEPROMPTER WAS LIKE GIRL WRAP IT UP and idk i hate divas like so muchhhh and idk why she thought she was soooo special and it just boils my bones

11. I feel like Anastasia should’ve won best costume of a play because THOSE ARE DARN GOOD COSTUMES

12. Mike faist is my baby

14. bandstand deserved best choreography tbh

15. the ending was really bad like idk

Overall i didn’t love these tonys, but some of the jokes were funny and the impressions were great but honestly, it was just meh. The performances were average (except falsettsos and miss saigon) and yeah

My rating : 5.5/10

(Small little add on : I do know come from away is about real life events now but at the moment I didn’t really understand the characters. also I’m not saying great comet didn’t deal with things like depression and anxiety, but deh is just more realistic (I mean more up to date with real world issues) with issues like teen suicide, which is a growing epidemic. great comet is an amazing musical and I would’ve been fine if it had won best musical, but personally I am in favor of deh :) (btw i’m sorry if I sound rude in any of this post, I loved all the musicals and all the musicals deserved each award)

Stiles P.O.V

Four Years Ago…

I rode my bike along side Scott. He grinned back at me, pulling into his garage. I followed him, hoping off my bike as I unbuckled my helmet. “My mom’s making tacos. Wanna have dinner with us?” I grin, scoffing at his stupid question. “Of course.” We hop in the house, slipping off our shoes. Scott turned over his shoulder, smiling. “Oh! My sister’s getting food and should be home later today so that we can hang out.” I try to hide my excitement. Scott’s sister and I were great friends. Here’s the thing, I liked Scott’s sister. She was pretty.. and pretty cool. Scott and I never really had friends. It was always the two of us. We weren’t popular, good at sports, anything really. And the moment we entered High School, we were considered outcasts to everyone. Well, almost everyone.

(Y/n) was never shy when it came to us. She showed us off proudly, like we were some big award, or something. She always made us feel special, included us in meals or helped with classes, and, considering she was beyond brilliant, (Y/n) was the reason I was able to pass my classes. Every time someone tried to put us down in some sort of way, she’d come in and tell them off and make them look like an idiot. Having her around was, quite literally, the best. I couldn’t help but feel excited to see her. She was the smartest, nicest person I had ever met in the whole world. However, she was going to graduate early. I knew I was going to miss her a lot. Without her, things would get rough, real quick.

Your P.O.V

Slipping on my jacket, I eyed my stuffed to the brim car, biting my lip. I hope I didn’t forget anything. Not that I would do that, considering I’m rather efficient. I check my list once more, though I don’t need to, it assures me either way. I nod and grin before hopping into my car. I roll down my windows to see my roommate, Lin, leaning up against my car. “Going back to see the fam?” She asks, smiling. I nod, turning on the radio before looking back at her. “Yeah, first time I’ve seen them since a year and a half ago. Studying takes up a lot more time than I thought.” Lin laughs, throwing her head back. “Oh, shut up. You’ve passed all your honors classes with flying colors. I envy the hell out of your brain. I don’t know how you can take that many honors classes. Oh! And by the way, our argument about quantum mechanics isn’t over yet! Have fun with your family!”

I can’t help but snicker before driving off. Blasting my radio, I can’t help but think about the good old days. The nights I use to spend with my brother and his friend, Stiles. Stiles. I wonder how he’s doing? I wonder how different he looks? I haven’t seen him in four years, which is a pretty long time. Then again, I look rather different as well. But healthy food, a gym, new hair and tattoos does that to you, I guess. I always did think Stiles was a cute kid. His sarcasm and wit always made me smile. I wonder how different Scott looks. I haven’t seen him in a while, either. My family didn’t know I’d be coming home today. I’d been planning this for months now, and now, I could finally see them. It took a few hours to get back, the drive not being terrible. The traffic was shit but the music was quite a beautiful distraction. The moment I pull into Beacon Hills, I almost cry from pure nostalgia.

Peering around the town, I can’t help but giggle at the memories that pound my head. It hurt to see this town again, but it was a good kind of pain, ya know? There was the cafe where I had my first kiss, it being not that great but the ice cream I had after made it all the while better. Around the corner was the park I played in. My brother, Stiles and I use to spend hours playing all sorts of activities. I had a blast with those two. The second I pulled up to my house, I park on the street, my driveway up to the brim with unrecognizable cars. Huh? Must be having a party or something. Perfect. I whip out my phone, scrolling down to hit my mom’s number. Her joyous voice filled the other line. “Hey, sweetheart! Oh! I miss you so much! How’s college? How were finals? Tell me everything!” I giggle at her happiness. I really missed her. Being at college could get really lonely. “College is great! I miss you like hell. Finals were, finals. I did the best I could, considering they were approximately 98% AP classes. How’ve you been, mama?”

She went off immediately. “Oh! Things have been okay here. As usual. Oh! I forgot to tell you that Scott’s captain of the lacrosse team! Stiles is no longer on the bench! He’s doing great, as well. (Y/n), I wish you could see them. They’ve turned into such handsome boys. You wouldn’t even recognize them!” I noticed a slight hesitation in her voice when she said that last sentence. I sighed, making my way up to the front door. “Mama, if you could have one wish, right now, what would it be?” Though we both knew the answer, I wanted her to say it, I wanted her to tell me. “I wish you were here, (Y/n). I miss my daughter, so much. I miss you, sweetheart.” Her voice was sad, broken. I take a deep breath and ring the doorbell. When she opens the door, I grin. “Wish granted.” In that moment, like I had planned, she broke down and burst into tears. Wrapping her arms around my waist while I towered over her, kissing her head. My mom held me close to her, almost desperate, as if I could slip through her fingers at any moment.

We stand at the door for a few minutes. I am perfectly content to just let her cry on my shoulder. Finally, she pulls away, wiping her eyes before wrapping her arms around my hand. “C’mon! Does Scott know you’re here?” I shake my head, smiling as she pointed to the room where he was suppose to be. I round the corner, not enough for him to see me, but enough so that I could hear the conversation that fluttered wildly in the room. “Scott, I’m telling you! Just ask Kira out, she’s right over there! She’s hot, you’re hot, what have you got to lose?!” Before whoever was talking could finish, I came into view, leaning against the wall with a smirk. “I thought I was the attractive sibling.” There was a lot of people in the room, more than I expected. All of their eyes fell on me as I looked at my brother, his back turned away from me. When he turned to face me, he gasped. I took a step forward, smiling. “What? You’re not gonna say hi to your sister?”

Before I could say anything more, he ran toward me, embracing me tightly. I giggled as he picked me up, twirling me around in a circle. “I missed you so much..” He whispered into the crook of my neck. I kiss his cheek, smiling to myself. “I missed you too, Goober.” For a split second, I totally forgot there were other people in the room. When he pulls away, I wipe his tears away, smiling. Like I had predicted, he looked a lot different from when we were little. “Wow, you’ve grown so much! Look at you!! You’re actually taller than me! That’s a first!” He giggled, looking at my face with a smile. “I have grown a lot! But you- you look so different!” I laugh, shaking my shoulders. “Well, a year and a half at Harvard does that to you. Mom told me you’re captain of the lacrosse team! Congratulations!!” He nods, his eyes gazing from my eyes to my cheeks then to my hair. “You look so different, (Y/n). You’ve grown so much..”

I scoff, punching his arm, playfully. “I’m still me. I might look different but I’m still your sister.” I say, lovingly. All of a sudden, a voice broke our family reunion. “I don’t mean to be rude, but would you mind introducing us to your totally attractive sister that we didn’t know about?” I look over at the group of younger teens, most of which were eyeing me up and down. The one who spoke was a shorter boy, the youngest of the group, it seems. Scott looks between me and his friends, blushing. Almost as if he forgot they were even here. But then again, I too, did that. “Guys, this is my sister, (Y/n). She attends Harvard and I haven’t seen her in a year and a half due to her massive studies and traveling.” I grin, waving at them. All of a sudden, I heard a new voice. A voice that sounded familiar, just lower. “(Y/n)?” Turning my body towards the voice, I gasp in shock. Stiles Stilinski stood by the door, gawking at me, as I’m sure I am as well. “Stiles?” He nodded, slowly shaking his head. “(Y/n), is that you?” I nod, still eyeing him with surprise.

All of a sudden, he lurched forward, taking me within his massive arms that use to be so tiny. Stiles use to be half my size, if not smaller, scrawny and cute. But now, now he was grown, towering over me. Tall, toned and burly. Of course, he was lanky before, that part hadn’t changed, however all of his weight was fit in just the right places. Stiles arms and chest were bigger. They looked massive. I would assume it was due to long lacrosse practices. His chocolate brown hair was longer, tousled and wild. I had the strongest urge to run my hands through them. His hands were massive, wrapping around my waist like they were meant to be there. Stiles picked me up like Scott did, twirling me around in a circle. We both giggle, loudly. His voice being a lot lower than before. It was sexy as hell, raspier. It sent shivers down my spine. When he pulled away, he looked at me again. Shocked at my new look. As was I about him. I mean, god damn.

“You’re here- You look- Wow..”
“Likewise. You look- different.”
“Different is-”
“Good. Different’s good.”

Before I noticed the awkwardness in the room, the one girl with strawberry blonde hair took the initiative to strut toward me, smirking. “Lydia Martin. So, Harvard, huh? You must be pretty smart.” Shrugging slightly, saddened by the fact that I could no longer look at Stiles. “Yeah, I suppose so. But, by the looks of it, you are as well.” Lydia eyes me with suspicions, brows furrowed with curiosity. “Why might you say that?” I smirk, examining her up and down, analyzing her. “I presume you’re eighteen years of age but due to your profusely large amount of make-up, you’re going for the older look. Head held up high, back always straight, sophisticated. Due to your daily attire, people assume you to be older, wiser. And they’re right. You dress the way you are. However, because of a past relationship, you’ve hidden yourself from within. You’re a lot brighter than people give you credit for. But that’s brilliant, you see, nobody suspects a dumb-blonde, well in this case, strawberry blonde, to be a riveting genius. As to which, you are. But since you’ve ended that toxic relationship-”

I continue, their eyes on me with awe. “You’ve grown out of your shell and become the brilliant bright person you are now.” As I finish, Scott looks at me with brotherly awe and pride. When I look at Stiles, his jaw is practically to the floor. Lydia shakes my hand, winking at Scott. “I like her.” After that moment, I had become the interest of the party. A taller burly boy, Isaac, I believe, along with Liam and Derek, never left my side. Kira and Malia were a ball to be around. They were both so funny, polar opposites but they made their friendship work. For them, it somehow flowed. Malia was rather snarky, no-filter and completely done with the world. Kira, on the other hand, was quite different. She was bubbly, full of life and energy. When she smiled, it was contagious. Lydia, like I predicted, was beyond brilliant. Halfway through talking, she started talking to me in Latin, not just normal Latin, enchant Latin.

The group was looking at us in complete awe. I noticed after a little while that Scott and Stiles has broken away from everyone else. They seemed to be discussing something important, glancing my way occasionally. I nodded and smiled at them, kindly. After talking with the group for a while, I broke away from them to talk to Scott. “Hey, I’m gonna catch up with Mom for a bit, if that’s okay with you?” He nods, smiling back at me. “What?” I ask. He merely shakes his head, grinning. “I’m just really glad I’ve got you back.” I take him into a tight hug. “Well, I’m here for good. I’ll be back later, alright?” He nods, letting me go catch up with mom. As I left the room, I couldn’t help but glance at Stiles, biting my lip as our eyes meet. He smiled shyly back at me. When I sit across from mom, she smirks back at me, knowingly. “What?” I ask, slightly confused by her new attitude. She nudges her head back at the room. “They’ve grown, haven’t they? Especially Stiles.” She emphasizes.

I nod, finally understanding what she meant. “Yeah, when did Stiles get so hot?” She coughs mid-drink, laughing loudly. Probably surprised by my pure honesty, she had no need to pry if I speaking without a filter. “Yes, he’s grown quite a lot since you last saw him.” I nodded, giggling. “Yes, yes he has.” All of a sudden, a loud crash came from behind us. We both turn around to see the teens on the floor, bodies on top of one another. And at the bottom, was Stiles, beat red. “Awe, c’mon! I thought she would have gone for me!!” Liam yelled, exasperatedly. When I look back at Stiles, I smirk and wink at him. He giggles, fumbling back into the other room. All of a sudden, Stiles yelped. “If you hurt my sister, I’ll kill you.” Scott said, protectively before walking into the our room, winking at me before tossing me a thumbs up. “Go get ‘em, sister.” I laugh, shaking my head. “I missed you guys so much.” She wrapped her hand around mine. “We missed you too.” All of a sudden, a new pair of hands wrapped around my shoulders. I look up to see Stiles, grinning. I put my hands on his waist, pulling him closer to me. The rest of the gang came into the kitchen, laughing and cheering wildly. God, it was great to be back.

(I hope you liked it!!)

MOONLIGHT 5 stars (out of five)

Moonlight is a film full of mesmerizing mystery. As it slowly searches through a young man’s conflicted heart, it creates a moment-to-moment feeling of discovery. It leaves you with a sense of pure wonder.

The film is a sprawling yet intimate urban epic. Based on an unproduced play by Tarell Alvin McCraney, it follows a young African American man named Chiron as he grapples with homosexuality and growing up on the drug-drenched streets of Miami. We see Chiron as a painfully quiet boy (Alex Hibbert), a troubled teenager (Ashton Sanders) and a hardened drug dealer (Trevante Rhodes).

Writer-director Barry Jenkins maintains a masterful slow-burn pace as he digs under the bloodstained surface of Chiron’s world to reveal the desperation and aching beauty beneath. James Laxton’s cinematography captures the majesty amid the crumbling setting. And Nicholas Britell’s score looms over the film like the ghosts of Chiron’s past. Like the otherworldly glow to which the title refers, it’s eerily beautiful.

When we finally see Chiron as an adult, his former self is buried under brawn and bravado. It’s a tragic portrait of toxic masculinity being used as a defense mechanism.

We live in a world that’s largely more open to homosexuality. Yet here is Chiron, hiding behind intimidating muscles and sharp gold teeth. He powerfully embodies the timeless challenge of opening up one’s identity to the world. Rhodes perfectly captures the crippling weight of Chiron’s past. He makes his pain our own as he talks to his estranged mother (Naomie Harris) and reconnects with his high school friend (André Holland) — the first person to ever make him feel comfortable with his sexual identity.

One must stop and briefly speak of Naomie Harris’ nuanced, Oscar-nominated performance as Paula, Chiron’s desperately selfish drug addicted mother. Harris plays the part with a manipulative edge that makes us see her both as a bad parent and a woman in desperate need of help. While we can see that Chiron has deserved a better mother, somehow Harris forces us to also see her character as a woman who is a product of her environment and I wanted to see her prevail as she is portrayed as a broken woman with potential.

The other very noteworthy performance comes from Mahershala Ali who plays Juan, a drug dealer who takes Chiron under his wing after meeting the young boy through dealings with Paula in the film’s first act. I suspect that in Chiron, Juan can see how badly he needs a positive role model. Though Juan deals drugs he is not a villain by any means, and perhaps he can see a glimpse of himself in Chiron pondering if he’d had a decent person to show him the way if his life could have been better. Ali’s performance is one of splendour and it earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Moonlight radiates with you-are-there immediacy, putting us in Chiron’s skin as he struggles to break out of his shell. It’s an intensely relevant film — a shattering reflection of today’s world. It’s harrowing yet hopeful, making us wince and marvel at the spectacle of raw humanity.

One of the film’s most poignant moments comes when a young Chiron asks Juan “What’s a faggot?” Juan responds by saying “A faggot is a word used to make gay people feel bad.”

Chiron continues: “Am I a faggot?” To which Juan eloquently retorts: “NO. You can be gay…but you don’t have to let NOBODY call you faggot!”

In 2017, we have a president who’s endorsed by the KKK, but we also have films like Moonlight — films that aim to make us look past privilege and the haze of hate and intolerance surrounding society. At its best, cinema can take ideology off the table and replace it with a slice of raw reality. As the late great Roger Ebert wrote, a great movie “shakes us and gives us the impression of having touched life itself.” And like life, “the movies are a machine that generates empathy. It lets you understand a little bit more about different hopes, aspirations, dreams and fears. It helps us to identify with the people who are sharing this journey with us.”

Moonlight is a cinematic journey you won’t forget.
