Giuseppe Ceracchi (1751-1801) - Bust of Jean-Baptiste-Jules Bernardotte
a Napoleonic army officer who went on to become elected king of Sweden
(as Karl XIV Johan) and of Norway (as Karl III Johan) from 1818 until
Giuseppe Ceracchi, a sculptor born in Rome,
produced many portrait busts and statues of political figures in
America, Italy and France, making them all look like Roman emperors. An
early Napoleon supporter, Ceracchi came to distance himself from the
Emperor after the coup of 18 Brumaire and ended up being guillotined for
his alleged involvement in an attempt to assassinate Napoleon.
The bust is made of plaster of Paris with bronze patina and is part of the Franco Maria Ricci art collection, Parma.
A well known image of four generations of royals, Grand Duchess Alexandra Iosifovna, with daughter, Queen Olga of the Hellenes, Great Granddaughter Maria Pavlovna, the younger and great great grandson, Prince Lennart of Sweden.
What i didnt noticed before, due the size of the image, was this sweet detail…
Maria holding a portrait of her late mother, Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna of Russia <3
