Is the whole "house inside of another structure" a good idea?

When I first read your question I thought you were being a smart ass asking about an apartment building (aka multiple houses inside another structure) but there are a number of examples of reusing abandoned structures by inserting a new structure inside the stone walls. Some of these structures are very successful not only in using an existing resource but in creating compelling residential spaces that marry an old structure with the contemporary aesthetic and requirements for a house.
