Belle and Beast 1991 vs. Belle and Beast 2017

Belle and Beast 1991: By the time we are introduced to Beast, he is already more animal than human. He has given up on the chance of the curse being broke. Rather than just accepting it, he lets it swallow his heart and soul. Every day that passes he gets worse and worse. Belle serves as the catalyst of change. By showing him kindness, love and respect, Beast is slowly able to gain back his humanity. He starts to act more and more like a human, with his decision of letting Belle go to find Maurice being his more human and compassionate decision yet. Even the decision to not kill Gaston is one that comes from everything Belle has taught him; even when facing his biggest enemy he decides to show compassion and mercy. When he passes away, he has embraced death knowing that the time he spent with Belle was worth more than his entire life. This realization allows Belle to confess her true feelings for him, allowing him to be reborn again not just as the human prince but the man Belle help create through her love. They started off as not being equals but gradually grew into something beyond friendship.

Beauty and the Beast 2017: Both Belle and Beast are almost equals. While Beast still retains a monstrous nature, he is more of a tortured, depressed individual that has kept the memories of his past, his interests and his feelings. Both Belle and Beast are tortured souls that need to seek refuge in each other. They are both cursed in a way; Belle’s curse is that she grew up never knowing how her mother passed away, living with a potentially depressed father that overprotects her from having a similar fate, in a small town that pretty much mocks her for who she is, and would go as far as to destroy an invention of hers just because they thought it was too unorthodox. By meeting Beast and learning more about his world, she was able to find someone who also felt lonely in a cruel world and confide in him her true feelings without being judged about it while also sharing similar interests. By meeting Belle, Beast was able to learn that there is a lot to a man than just what he does or how he looks like; that we are complex beings with sometimes tragic memories. He is able to learn compassion, empathy and patience through Belle. Both by the end are transformed once they learned that they had more in common than their realize, and by not being afraid of opening their hearts to each other, they became better people by the end.

Same story, same characters, different development. This is what I gathered after talking to many people about both films, and it just makes me appreciate Disney’s take on the fairy tale even more; it is more than just a prince begging a woman to marry him, it is about the TWO OF THEM finding compassion and love in each other and towards each other, with love become a healing factor in both adaptations.

Just my two cents.

If she’s the one who’ll break the spell, you must finally learn to love…

I cannot express enough how much this movie means to me.

I remember first watching it when I was 4, and just… completely falling in love with it, watching it so many times till I actually got sick of it for a while, and simply shelved it away.

That is, until depression and a whole flood of other mental disorders I never wanted or asked for hit me while I was in middle school like a frickin’ bullet train. Those were probably some of the darkest years of my life.

And, I remember one day, when I was too unmotivated too work, and when a lot of unhealthy thoughts and memories had just resurfaced in my mind, I had been randomly going through youtube videos, when I stumbled upon a clip of the ‘Be Our Guest’ scene from the 1991 movie as it popped up in my ‘Recommended’ list. I remember clicking it, watching it, and falling in love with the movie all over again. The gorgeous score, the spell-bindingly beautiful animation, and story all combined into one just made me cry.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ has gotten me through the hardest of times; it’s given me hope and happiness when I needed it most. It was a story that made me believe in love and compassion, and taught me valuable lessons that still resonate with me to this day. Particularly: To never judge one’s character by their outward appearance. It just completely changed me. For the better.

And… I just adore this movie to pieces.

Happy 25th ‘Beauty and the Beast’

May you continue to enchant audiences of all ages, for generations to come!

Cast/Characters:

Paige O’ Hara’s Belle or Emma Watson’s Belle

Emma all the way. I tip my hat for Paige’s Belle and pay my respects to her iconic portrayal. But Emma… Truth be told I like her singing voice better, I like her feistiness, I like how headstrong she was without being unkind. She was exactly what I always knew she would be as Belle: absolutely perfect!

Robby Benson’s Beast Adam or Dan Stevens’ Beast Adam

Is there really any question? I love them both, but pitting them against each other is almost unfair. Dan Stevens’ Adam isn’t only miles ahead of Robby Benson’s, he’s in a different league. You almost can’t compare. You all know how I feel about Adam so I’m not going to rant about it, but, to put it simply, I love Robby Benson’s Adam because of all the additions to 2017 Adam’s character, because I count them in for his character as well.

Richard White’s Gaston or Luke Evans’ Gaston

I’d have to say 2017 wins yet again. It’s a close call, but I really like how they made his evil less subtle. 2017 Gaston is scarier because we see men like him every day in our lives. And, of course, Luke was amazing in the part!

Jesse Corti’s LeFou or Josh Gad’s LeFou

1991 LeFou wasn’t even a character, he was just a punching bag for Gaston. Josh Gad is another reason why I prefer 2017 over 1991.

Rex Everhart’s Maurice or Kevin Kline’s Maurice

Kevin Kline’s. Enough said. No, but 2017 Maurice is more well-rounded. He’s an actual person rather than just a character who is there for comedic timing. And, disagree with me all you like, I really liked seeing his past with Belle’s mother and the utter turmoil he must have gone through when he saved his daughter’s life by leaving his wife to die. What a horrible decision to make. Respect.

Jerry Orbach’s Lumiere or Ewan McGregor’s Lumiere

Jerry Orbach? I think? He’s just so iconic in that role. But Ewan did an amazing job, and I prefer him being a devoted boyfriend to Plumette rather than a player.

David Ogden Stiers’ Cogsworth or Ian McKellen’s Cogsworth

David Ogden. Him and Jerry did such an amazing job. They’ve really won me over. The ultimate dream team.

Angela Lansbury’s Mrs. Potts or Emma Thompson’s Mrs. Potts

Angela Lansbury probably. I kind of felt like Emma was mirroring what Angela had already done. But I prefer the look of 2017 Mrs Potts. And the fact that she is the right age to be Chip’s mother. And that she only has one child. So character wise 2017 wins, but going by performance Angela wins.

Bradley Pierce’s Chip or Nathan Mack’s Chip

Nathan Mack. I just like his voice better. There’s nothing else to base it on.

Kimmy Robertson’s Babette or Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Plumette

Is there really any competition?

Jo Anne Worley’s Wardrobe or Audra McDonald’s Madame de Garderobe

Audra, all the way.

Songs & Scenes:

Human Again or Days In The Sun

Ahhhhh. Days In the Sun? Yeah, I’m going to have to say that. As much as I love Human Again, Days In the Sun just has a lot more weight to it, and is a great way of showing the inner turmoils of every character.

1991 Gaston or 2017 Gaston

Obviously 2017.

Lumiere letting Maurice into the castle or Maurice being terrified by Chip

I was a bit confused as to how the doors opened in 2017. Was it Chappeau? Or maybe the doors are also enchanted, and it’s actually one of the staff. But it just makes more sense to not have Lumiére invite him in.

Beast giving Belle the library as a gift or Beast giving Belle the library because Romeo & Juliet sucks

Sassy Adam is the best Adam, so obviously 2017. I love how he is just so nonchalant about the whole thing. Like “yeah have these books or whatever”, and then he realises how much it means to Belle and that’s when he starts to fall in love with her.

1991 Castle vs. Villagers or 2017 Castle vs. Villagers

Tough one. I did miss Garderobe swaying her wardrobe hips as she descends the stairs with the beat of the music, and the “the fat lady is singing”- line did make me cringe. But other than that 2017 wins yet again.

Cast/Characters:

Paige O’ Hara’s Belle or Emma Watson’s Belle

Heck first one in I’m already stuck but I’m gonna say this cause while I enjoyed the new things in the new Belle I have issues with Emma Watson and we’re gonna leave it as that so it’s not a rant

Robby Benson’s Beast or Dan Stevens’ Beast

I’m going with this purely for the line ‘I had an expensive education’ because I live for that do you understand how long I’ve been mad at the idea that the beast can’t read when fuck that nobel children got taught to read like 4 languages including latin I was so pleased I feel like this line is a throwback to that which fixes it also he hates people over romanticing Romeo and Juliet

Richard White’s Gaston or Luke Evans’ Gaston

*Makes iffy hand gestures and a non commited sound

Jesse Corti’s LeFou or Josh Gad’s LeFou

Can I choose neither? I wanna choose neither cause Jesse Corti’s didn’t add much of anthing while I have Huge Issues with Josh Gad’s also but at least he had a bigger role but yeah I have problems

Rex Everhart’s Maurice or Kevin Kline’s Maurice

Both are good? But the man had me at his music box so …

Jerry Orbach’s Lumiere or Ewan McGregor’s Lumiere

While Jerry is a darling I really enjoyed the newer Lumiere purely because he’s less sexual creep and more hopelessly in love with his girlfriend, I dunno I feel like I’ve probably known some men like Jerry’s Lumiere and it’s not fun, he seems women obsessed and Ewan is adorable

David Ogden Stiers’ Cogsworth or Ian McKellen’s Cogsworth

Heck heck heck I wanna say David because he was really funny and I love him but Ian and Ian should win everytime purely for my love for him help HHHHMMMMM

Angela Lansbury’s Mrs. Potts AND Emma Thompson’s Mrs. Potts

Emma was so good but Angela is like such an icon from my childhood she’s wonderful I love her

Bradley Pierce’s Chip or Nathan Mack’s Chip

I like both of them and can’t think of how either differs really? Maybe Nathan’s Chip is a few years older? Ehhhhhh

Babette or Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Plumette

Shut that noise this aint even a competion gimme my lady

Jo Anne Worley’s Wardrobe or Audra McDonald’s Madame de Garderobe

The orignal Wardrobe was so annoying? Is that just me? gimme my beautiful songstress

Songs & Scenes:

Human Again or Days In The Sun

OOhhh right so when I first saw the new film I was really hoping to see Human Again at last offically in but because of how the curse is changed (100% worse, fuck that witch tell her to meet me in the pit I’ll take her down) and how the servants are outright doomed rather than considerably inconvenienced they have a completely different feel, and I think at least very realistic, they want to be free again, they honestly don’t want to die or for their loved ones to die but they have to face reality and they know breaking the curse is unlikely, they will do what they can to stop it and save themselves but the odds are they cannot be saved and at some level they’ve all accepted it, Human Again would never fit into this, and Days in the Sun is mourning what they’ve lost

1991 Gaston or 2017 Gaston

Ya

Lumiere letting Maurice into the castle or Maurice being terrified by Chip

*Shrugs* That stink eye Lumiere gives Cogsworth when he tries to silence him and then how he burns him its great

Beast giving Belle the library as a gift or Beast giving Belle the library because Romeo & Juliet sucks

While the orginal Beast was so cute when he wanted to suprise Belle with the library I deeply feel new Beast’s level of ‘Fuck you and your shite taste in books heres better’ right in my soul

1991 Castle vs. Villagers or 2017 Castle vs. Villagers

Go git em darlin’ Cadenza
