Benefit They’re Real Push-up Liner Demo and Review
Benefit launches They’re Real Push-Up Liner 27th June worldwide, and if you’re curious about this gel liner in a pen, read on!
This retails for $38 in Singapore, and it’s meant for people who want the precision of liquid, the soft matte finish and lasting power of gel, and the convenience of a pencil. It also boasts the Accuflex applicator tip, which is a latex-y slanted dispenser which is flexible enough to hug the lash line and not scrape the delicate eye skin.
Now you might be asking what the difference is with Maybelline’s previous version. I honestly can’t say for sure because I only tried the Maybelline on the back of my hand and didn’t purchase it when it was still available. Now I can’t find any to compare.
From what I can tell, the Benefit formula is a little thicker and denser, the pen grip is designed specifically to to be ergonomic and easy to hold, and Benefit’s design was 5 years in the making, so SOMEHOW, SOMEWHERE, someone got hold of something they were not supposed to, cos 2 companies have the same concept now.
The main thing I’ll say is that this is NOT an eyeliner for novices. It sounds like it would be, but the flexible tip takes some getting used to because it’s so soft that it can bend and flop sideways, and the amount of product you twist out has to be controlled properly.
Press too hard, or dispense too much product (I twist until it clicks once or twice), and you can make a mess.
You need to be patient when you use this. Work in small sections, and you’ll be able to control it and get a neat, clean line. Try too hard to draw it quickly in a single stroke, and you can make a mess unless you’re an absolute pro with it.
The flexible applicator makes it easy to get a moderately thick line and flick. But it’s not that easy if you like very fine lines.
That said, once you get the hang of it, it CAN look incredibly beautiful. Very defined and intense.
I applied it as a liner, and then I actually tightlined with it. In fact I love it as a tightliner. That lasted me the entire day from 8am to 8pm with minimal fading even on the waterline.
If you have oily lids though, this will smudge a bit, like most liners. Use a good primer to improve longevity.
Unlike liquid and gel liners that you apply with a brush, it’s very hard to get this in between the lashes, so even when you line above and below the lashes, there’s a tiny gap that you can’t really reach unless you use mascara.
I found tiny flecks falling off (probably from where the liner coated my lashes), so you have to be careful to avoid them.
There’s a tendency for the liner to gunk up at the top or sides of the applicator if you dispense too much. Be careful to wipe those off on the back of your hand before applying to your eyes.
If you’re in Singapore, Sephora at ION is giving you a chance to pre-purchase the liner ahead of the rest of the world on 13th June!

Today the Benefit rep came into work (I work in the Beauty Boutique at Shoppers Drug Mart in case y'all weren’t aware) and guess what she brought with her? That’s right. The Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner and the matching makeup remover. Ever since they started showing sneak-peaks of these products on Instagram and Youtube, I knew I had to see it for myself immediately.
So to put it in the simpler terms, the Push-Up Liner is not a liquid liner. It is like a gel or cream eyeliner, but instead of the product being in a jar and then having to use a separate angled brush to apply it, both products are in one. You twist the bottom of the tube and the gel squeezes out of the soft plastic (AccuFlex™) tip. Pretty handy right?
So let’s talk pros and cons. I love Benefit. I really do. And I love the They’re Real Mascara. So I really wanted to love this eyeliner, but I’m still a little bit uncertain about it. When I was trying out this product, I found it a bit messy. It squirted out too much product when I twisted it and found myself with quite a bit of excess gel. Plus, I have a feeling that the product could easily dry up in the tip. But I can't verify that assumption until I own this product myself. As for pros, there are many! Although this probably won’t be my favorite eyeliner, I can see why it will be a very popular launch. The actual gel product is a very nice consistency. Although a tad bit thick for my liking, it’s a very matte, opaque black. It’s also very nice and creamy. And for those of you who don’t want your liner smudging anywhere, this liner is completely waterproof!
Because the eyeliner is so waterproof, Benefit came out with a whole new eye makeup remover especially for the They’re Real line! I was very impressed with the makeup remover! It is a cream consistency, not a liquid, which I really like because not only is it less messy, but I find it is easier to massage on my eyes and break down all of the makeup. This works incredibly well. After only a few seconds of gently rubbing this remover on the eyeliner, it disintegrated the product and then easily wiped away with a tissue.
All in all, I think Benefit has another huge hit on their hands and I can’t wait to try these out more in depth when they hit stores. So for all of you who are freaking about these two products, the official launch is June 27. Get your butts down to Shoppers Drug Mart on that day to check these out! See you then!
Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner when I first heard about it I though it was a really unique concept and the only eyeliner I know of its kind (I have since seen that Maybelline released a very similar liner a while ago) II had extreme high hopes for this product and it turned out to be a real let down. The application was uneven and clumpy; the formula itself was just too crumbly and dry and the applicator wasn’t firm enough to work with such crumbly formula. This product did not work well for winged eyeliner/upper liner as the formula was so soft the line ended up clumpy and uneven. Benefit describe this as a “lash hugging gel liner pen” so I hoped this eyeliner would be good for tightlining, but it was just a big goopy mess, the dry formula sort of “balled” up and wouldn’t grip to the area in between the lashes. In terms of staying power it failed on all counts. Benefit call this eyeliner “budge proof” but in under six hours of wear this eyeliner had completely smudged, it was all above my crease and halfway across my temples, the liner also flaked onto my cheeks. I’m so disappointed with this product and can say it is one of the worst eyeliners I have ever tried, I had hoped for so much more. Out 27th of June

MAKE YOUR LASHES LOOK THICKER TIP: Gently lift your lid and wiggle a super-slim precision pencil between fringe to create the illusion of full, lush lashes. “When using gel liner, make sure you remove any dried product at the tip before applying. This liner is perfect for very detailed techniques and is incredible for tightlining your eye for the most natural look,” says Sephora PRO Artist Erik Soto. TRY: Hourglass 1.55 MM Mechanical Gel Eye Liner
ENHANCE YOUR EYE COLOR TIP: Make any eye color sparkle with a swipe of complementary liner: Brown eyes are amped up with navy and hazel tones, green eyes glimmer with purple and deep plum hues, and blue eyes intensify with plush brown shades. “When using these liners, work one eye at a time,” says Soto. “This will ensure you have enough time to blend, plus you can also use in conjunction with an eyeliner brush to create detailed looks.” TRY: MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Liner
SMOKE OUT YOUR LIDS TIP: Glide a creamy pencil on the upper and lower lash lines, then diffuse the color up to the creases for a sultry, smoky-eyed effect. According to Soto, “This liner’s ease of application and lasting formula make it a cult favorite.” TRY: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil
RECREATE RETRO DEFINITION TIP: Dash a gel liner pen along your lash lines to effortlessly craft an even line, then extend the pencil outward into a classic cat eye for a timeless look. “The key with using this new gel liner is making sure you prep the pencil before each use,” says Soto. “Once you have removed any dry product from the tip, one click of product is all you should need for each eye to create the most effortless winged liner.” TRY: Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner
MAKE YOUR SHADOW STICK TIP: Lay down a foundation of long-wearing liner over the lids, and then layer on matching shadow (or a similar shade for a pop of dimensional color) to help shadow stay put from dawn to dusk. “This pencil is ideal for more diffused looks because of its shape,” says Soto. “It’s a nice, soft texture to get close to the eye.” TRY: SEPHORA COLLECTION Jumbo Liner 12HR Wear Waterproof
