Ben’s Chili Bowl has been a DC icon for over half a century and a landmark in the city’s African-American history.

Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Cab Calloway were fans of Ben’s. Another fan of Ben’s since the early days was a then-unknown Bill Cosby. Cosby discovered Ben’s with a military buddy while on leave from boot camp in Maryland. Coming into town just for the half-smokes became a ritual for Cosby, and later, when he would be performing at theaters nearby, he always made a point to eat at Ben’s.

Half-smoke by wfyurasko on Flickr.

As Tumblr, it appears, has gone gaga for hotdogs, I happened to be eating at Ben’s Chili Bowl, which is a DC landmark.

This is a chili half-smoke. It’s a spicy sausage that is specific to DC, and is made of half beef and half pork, and smoked to perfection. It’s served with delicious chili and potato chips.

Come to DC, and we shall get one together, Tumblr friends.

Because I Have To Write Something

I need to write something. It’s been a month since I’ve posted. In that month, I’ve taken a class that has made me cry. I got a new roommate. And my President is now Black. Here are my top five observations of the last month, well really the last week, Inaug Style:

1. Fur coats are not dead! The inauguration proved it. I have never seen so many full-length minks with matching hats in my life. Not even in your worst Blaxploitation film. Who would have known that church ladies were so pimpin…

2. DC is quite possibly the best city ever. Ben’s Chili Bowl, beautiful subway stops with the clock telling you how long you have to wait, and snow that doesn’t stick to the ground. I’m in love.

3. Rick Warren is creepy. Why did he say Malia and Sasha’s name with such gusto???

4. Will.I.Am makes earworms. I can’t get “It’s a New Day” out of my head. Well, that and U2’s “City of Blinding Lights.”

5. Aretha is wrong for that hat. Yes she is. I don’t care about the “legend” status. If the hat was the bow, and she were the present, she’d have to be returned. I’m in need of one Inauguration-vocalist gift receipt…

My new year’s resolution is to write more than one post a week. Stay tuned!

I was out doing yoga with a friend and after an enlightening and relaxing class… we had a mad craving for chili cheese burgers ( #obviously ). Because we were near Ust we thought it would be perfect to hit up Ben’s Chili Bowl seeing how my friend had never been to this historic place before. We each got a chili cheese burger and shared a chocolate milk shake and fries. It totally lived up to the reputation. The chili was SPECTACULAR!!!! And Ben’s Chili Bowl has got all the classics that a chili and burger place should have— also great prices! (Cash only though). The thick chocolate milkshake was super delicious! And really was a sweet highlight to our dinner.

Shit From D.C. People Love That I Personally Can't Stand

By: Eden H

I LOVE me some DC. In the city about 3-4 times a week. It’s one of my favorite places in the U.S………..HOWEVER there are some things that everyone else loves, that I can’t stand. Wanna hear him ‘em? Here they go:

                                            Mambo/Mumbo Sauce

This is apparently a taste I have yet to acquire. This shit is gross. Which may very well have everything to do with the fact that I don’t really like condiments period. No ketchup. No mustard. No relish. No mayo. I don’t like any of that crap. This is sauce makes me gag.

*check out the band though, THEY’RE LOVELY!*
