17 years ago today Jay-Z released the lead single from his 2x Platinum fifth studio album The Dynasty: Roc La Familia. Produced by The Neptunes and featuring a hook performed by Pharrell Williams alongside [uncredited] contributions by
Roc-A-Fella Records’ Omillio Sparks and N*E*R*D’s Shay Haley, “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” was Jigga’s first single to reach #1 on the Billboard “Hip-Hop/R&B” chart, and it peaked at #11 on the “Hot 100.”
In an interview with MTV News, Hov explained how the club-ready track came to be: “My man Sparks had this hook for a while and I was looking for a beat for it. I was looking all over, calling a lot of producers telling them ‘Yo I got a hit! I’m telling you I got a hit, all I need is a track to match it.’ It took me a couple of weeks but I found the track when The Neptunes did it.” The catchy hook interpolates Rick James’ 1981 chart-topping hit “Give It to Me Baby;” while in his first verse Jay interpolates Biggie’s 1997 “The World is Filled” and Carl Thomas’ “I Wish.”
What inspired the track? According to Hov, he “made this track with a particular Kimora Lee party in mind. The Carl Thomas’ song ‘I Wish’ was hot at the time, and Mary J. Blige was on the floor dancing like crazy. I captured that night in the track. ‘When the Remy’s in the system…’ was the perfect way to start the track. Why do I have to think of another line? There’s already a perfect one and it comes from my guy Big.”
“Parking Lot Pimpin’” was originally planned as The Dynasty’s
first single, but the sound he delivered on “I Just Wanna” was undeniably infectious: “I had ‘Parking Lot’ up and running. It’s an incredible, hot song. I was all ready to go shoot a video for it, but the next day I made [‘I Just Wanna’] and it was just the vibe. The vibe of everyone in the studio, the immediate reaction—people were singing it by the time the second hook came on … we played it 30 times at Baseline the night we made it. Two days later, I switched the single from ‘Parking Lot’ and was soon shooting the video for 'I Just Wanna.’”
The David Meyers-directed music video was filmed at a mansion in Bel-Air, Los Angeles in October 2000. It was filmed just four days after the track’s creation; and took four days to complete. The video features cameos from Lil’ Kim, Lil’ Cease, Damon Dash, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, Jermaine Dupri, Chanel Ce'mone and Friday actor John Witherspoon. The well-known Karrine “Superhead” Steffans was also on the video set, spending one-on-one sessions with artists and crew members in one of the trailers.
In an on-set interview with Vibe magazine, Dame Dash revealed he had recently been questioning the “ball-til-you-fall” image that Roc-A-Fella Records had been projecting in their music videos: “I asked Jay the other day, ‘You think people gonna get sick of it? Of us having fun?’ He said, ‘Dog, how long we been having fun? We ain’t sick of it!’ … We don’t have a gimmick. The thing about a lot of videos is that they’re fake scenarios. We just show how we get down when we on a yacht and when we in a house and when we together with friends. The minute we stop having fun we gonna show videos about not having fun.”
In 2001 Britney Spears revealed that she loved “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” so much that it inspired her to work with The Neptunes on her Britney album, saying “for this album I was really inspired by Jay-Z and The Neptunes, those were the two artists that I have been listening to.”
A few weeks ago, I quit a PA job on a short film for various reasons, but mostly because the pay wasn’t worth the safety hazards. Before quitting, the asshole production designer told me not to keep my hopes up because I would have to go through at least ten years of bullshit before I could move up in the industry.
o btw here’s a John Legend music video I production designed.
I was always an unusual girl, my mother told me that I had a chameleon soul. No moral compass pointing me due north, no fixed personality. Just an inner indecisiveness that was as wide and as wavering as the ocean.
